West Ham: Moyes provides full-back update

West Ham manager David Moyes has provided an update on the fitness of Aaron Cresswell, Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks as the east Londoners face a full-back crisis.

What’s the story?

Following the Hammers’ 2-0 defeat to Arsenal and ahead of their subsequently postponed fixture against Norwich City over the weekend, Moyes addressed the media and provided an update on the absent trio.

“I am hoping that maybe Ryan or Ben or Cressie [Cresswell] can get themselves available for us,” the Irons manager said. “It would help us in a period where we have some injuries and it looks like all the full-backs in the main are the ones getting injured or sent off.”

Right-back Vladimir Coufal has been included in the squad for West Ham’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham but will miss the next Premier League match through suspension after being sent off at Arsenal on Wednesday night.

This leaves 28-year-old Arthur Masuaku as the Irons’ only available senior full-back. However, 20-year-old right-back Harrison Ashby came off the bench against Arsenal and impressed on his debut against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, which could form a pathway into the side for the youngster.

West Ham need full-back options

With a hectic festive schedule still set to be played, Moyes will need as many available options as possible, particularly in the full-back areas.

Should the likes of Cresswell, Johnson and Fredericks return in the near future, it will get West Ham fans buzzing again after their team’s recent dip in form.

Fredericks hasn’t featured for David Moyes’ side since their 2-0 win at Rapid Vienna in the Europa League last month and has only managed two minutes in the Premier League all season. However, both Cresswell and Johnson are regular fixtures in the side, with the latter working hard to maintain his place in the starting XI.

The 21-year-old right-back has been impressive this season, managing a run of eight consecutive starts in the Premier League before missing the trips to Burnley and Arsenal, and he will hope that a brief spell on the sidelines won’t halt his progress.

Moyes’ hopeful comments about having some, or possibly all, of his injured full-backs available for upcoming fixtures will at least give West Ham supporters a shot in the arm after a testing couple of weeks.

Postecoglou urged to seal Jota deal

Celtic have been encouraged to secure the permanent signing of Jota in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, Pete O’Rourke stated his belief that all Celtic fans would love for Ange Postecoglou to secure the permanent signing of the 22-year-old Benfica loanee in the upcoming winter window.

Previous reports had revealed that the Bhoys do possess an option to buy the Portugal U21 international, with the figure required in order to seal the forward’s permanent switch to Parkhead believed to be around £6.5m.

Speaking about the club’s potential signing of Jota, O’Rourke said: “Yeah, this is a deal all Celtic fans want to get done as soon as possible. They love Jota up there.”

Celtic fans would love it

Considering just how impressive Jota has been since his arrival in Glasgow this summer, it is easy to see why O’Rourke believes that Celtic’s permanent signing of the 22-year-old would be a deal the Parkhead faithful would love.

Indeed, over his 11 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £3.15m-rated winger has bagged five goals, registered four assists and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of three shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns have seen player who Postecoglou himself dubbed an “unbelievable” talent average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.38, ranking him as the sixth-best player in the entirety of the Scottish top flight.

The £7.1k-per-week winger was also in excellent form over his five Europa League outings, scoring two goals, providing two assists and creating four big chances for his teammates – returns which saw the forward average a SofaScore match rating of 7.40 in the competition.

As such, it is clear for all to see that retaining the services of Jota beyond the end of the current campaign would be something of a major coup for the Bhoys, as the Portuguese youngster very much looks to possess the ability to help take Celtic to the next level both in domestic and European competition.

Manoj Tiwary made a battling century but could not prevent East Zone from being eliminated from the Duleep Trophy after conceding the first-innings lead to Central Zone, who progressed to the semi-finals where they will face South Zone in Indore from Tuesday. As on the first three days, bad light and fog ruled out play for several hours on Friday as well. It was only half an hour after lunch that play began on the final day, and East lost opener Arindham Das in the fifth over of the morning soon after he crossed his half-century. That brought in Manoj, who made his 11th first-class hundred to guide East’s effort.East had virtually no chance of overhauling Central’s mammoth first-innings score of 480, and their best chance lay in not getting bowled out and advancing on the basis of a better run-rate than their opposition in the match. However, those hopes melted away with a couple of triple-strikes from Central. Manoj watched as the middle-order trio of Ishank Jaggi, captain Saurabh Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha fell in the space of eight deliveries – East slipping from 131 for 2 to 133 for 5. There was some resistance from Manoj and Dhiraj Goswami but East again lost three wickets in ten balls to hurtle towards the exit. Manoj remained unbeaten on 102 when last man Abu Nechim holed out to Suresh Raina off RP Singh to confirm Central’s place in the last four.

Flower watching Kieswetter's development

England coach Andy Flower has backed Craig Kieswetter, the 22-year-old wicketkeeper batsman, to push for a place in the senior squad having impressed for England Lions during their tour of UAE.Kieswetter qualifies to play for England on Tuesday having appeared for South Africa Under-19s before moving to England four years ago. He has performed well for Somerset in both first-class and limited-overs cricket and has been in fine form for the England Lions during the tour so far, making 31, 40 not out and an unbeaten 77 in wins over Pakistan A and UAE A and has the chance to face the full side on Wednesday.”Craig Kieswetter has had a really good start,” Flower told reporters in Dubai. “He’s got runs in all three of his Lions games so far, so Wednesday is a chance for him to impress. I think he qualifies tomorrow for England and, of course, he’ll be excited about that challenge.””All of the Lions are under consideration and, quite rightly, they’ll be very hungry to press forward their case for selection. I’ve spoken to David Parsons, who is in charge of that group, and it’s been nice to see them play such powerful cricket. It is a good opportunity for them to impress, a good opportunity for them to challenge us so they’ll all be quite excited.”Kieswetter will find it difficult to dislodge Matt Prior from the Test side, but could find an opening in the shorter format, where Prior’s form has been far less prolific. Prior has moved up and down the batting order without impressing in any position, averaging 24.24 from 52 games. If Prior does keep his spot at No. 6, Kieswetter could conceivably play as a specialist batsman, after making 634 runs at 48.76 for Somerset in 50-over cricket and 248 runs in 12 Twenty20 games in 2009.His selection for England would stir some controversy after the inclusion fellow South-African raised players Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen. Geoff Miller, the national selector, admitted in January that England must be ‘careful’ about picking too many South Africans. The Lions will face the senior side on Wednesday with Pietersen eager to re-establish his position as the linchpin of the batting. Having been forced out mid-way through last summer’s Ashes series with an Achilles injury he struggled on his return to the side against South Africa and has now gone 11 months without a Test hundred. Flower, however, feels it won’t be long until Pietersen is delivering again.”He’s very hungry, he had quite a chunk of time out of international cricket and he’s come back hungry,” said Flower. “Things didn’t go perfectly well for him in South Africa but he did make some contributions, especially at the start of the series.”It was a difficult challenge for him to come back from playing no cricket to facing the South African attack on sporty wickets. It was difficult for him. This is an opportunity for him to get some serious time in the middle and for him to start contributing again in his dominant way in England victories.”

West Ham fans go wild for Lingard news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild for the latest update on their chase to sign Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard this window.

Manager David Moyes is keen to bring the England international to east London on a permanent deal following a hugely successful 2020/2021 loan spell at West Ham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 29-year-old bagged nine goals and four assists in just 16 Premier League starts over the second half of last campaign, but despite West Ham’s efforts, he didn’t join permanently in the summer window.

Instead, he chose to remain at his current club, a decision which has resulted in very little game time and broken down new contract talks as he now eyes a move away from Old Trafford.

The Daily Mirror, sharing an update on the situation, have now shared some very promising news out of West Ham.

According to their information, Lingard is now ‘ready’ to to leave United and ‘seal’ a permanent move to the Hammers – with manager Moyes and the club ‘determined’ to get it done before January 31.

West Ham fans go wild…

Flocking to this claim, given Lingard is now apparently ready to join, it’s little wonder some supporters believe this is a ‘very exciting’ development.

The Three Lions ace shone at West Ham last season and has been described as a would-be ‘massive signing’ for Moyes who could gift the club ‘another dimension’ (Paul Robinson, Football Insider).

There is little denying his coup would be a good move for Rob Newman and co with many Irons supporters certainly giving their thumbs up.

New Zealand took their winning streak over Australia to five with a 17-run success in the second Twenty20 in Christchurch. The visitors had a chance to end their drought when they held the hosts to 115 for 9, but they were unable to break free in their reply and were dismissed on the final ball for 98.Australia were a worrying 35 for 3, with Alex Blackwell and Lisa Sthalekar already gone, before Shelley Nitschke and Jess Cameron (16) combined. After Cameron was unfortunate to be lbw trying to sweep Kate Broadmore, Nitschke lifted the pace with a couple of strong boundaries to fine leg and straight down the ground, but they still needed 39 off four overs. The asking rate was too high and Ellyse Perry (6) holed out at long off, giving Sara McGlashan the first of two good catches. Her running take at long-on took care of Nitschke for 45 off 51, ending Australia’s charge, but McGlashan wasn’t finished and her long throw helped run out Rene Farrell. Suzie Bates got 3 for 24, including the final-ball stumping of Julie Hunter, but all the bowlers had kept the pressure on.Amy Satterthwaite, the Player of the Match, revived New Zealand after Perry crashed through the first three batsmen in the opening three overs. Perry was on a hat-trick after having Aimee Watkins lbw from the fourth ball of the day and picked up Maria Fahey to have the hosts 5 for 3 with Blackwell’s sharp catch in the gully.Satterthwaite arrived to save her side and put on 45 with McGlashan (16), who was dropped a couple of times, and was the eighth to fall after collecting 42 from 47 balls. A late push from Rachel Priest (14 off 9) took the team into three figures and gave them a match-winning total.Sthalekar picked up two wickets, including bowling Sophie Devine with a big off break, to support Perry’s 3 for 14. The teams’ next engagement is an ODI at Queenstown before the series concludes with two games in Invercargill.
