Steve Patterson, the Yorkshire seamer, has signed a new two-year deal with the club after impressing during the 2008 season

Cricinfo staff01-Oct-2008Steve Patterson, the Yorkshire seamer, has signed a new two-year deal with the club after impressing during the 2008 season. In four Championship matches he took 11 wickets at 25.36 as Yorkshire held onto their Division One status. His stand-out one-day performance came against Lancashire, in the Friends Provident Trophy, when he collected 2 for 18 off eight overs.Patterson, who was born in Hull, hopes to build on those figures next season. “I bowled well when I got my first team chances this summer and I am very pleased I have been given the opportunity to stay at the club where I have grown up,” he said. “I am at the stage in my career where it is important for me to play regular first team cricket and I am going to work hard over the winter months to make sure that happens with Yorkshire.”Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s chief executive, added: “I am delighted that Steve has committed his future to the club. Whenever he got a chance this summer he took it with both hands and delivered important wickets when we needed them.”Patterson’s opportunities should increase in 2009 after Darren Gough ended his first-class career.

Everton fans slam Townsend vs Brighton

Some Everton fans have been left slamming the display of Andros Townsend in their away game at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

The new signing missed a good chance in the first half that he really should have tucked away when the score was still 0-0, before his fellow winger Demarai Gray showed him how to finish by slotting nicely under goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after a neat run into the box to give them a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Townsend was also guilty of losing out on a fair few of his individual battles throughout the match, and was unsuccessful with some of his dribbles and crosses, while he also lost possession of the ball on several occasions (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, it was not his greatest performance, and the former Crystal Palace man will certainly want to improve after the international break.

Ramdin leads T&T to big-money glory

A superbly paced 41 off 28 balls by Denesh Ramdin powered Trinidad and Tobago to victory over Middlesex in the battle of the trans-Atlantic Twenty20 champions and with it the prize of US$280,000

A superbly paced 41 off 28 balls by Denesh Ramdin powered Trinidad and Tobago to victory over Middlesex in the battle of the trans-Atlantic Twenty20 champions and with it the prize of US$280,000. Ramdin added a decisive 67 in eight overs with the 19-year-old Darren Bravo as Middlesex dropped crucial catches in the closing stages, and Bravo sealed the victory by launching a mighty six with four balls remaining. It has been the question on everyone’s lips. How would a team react to the pressure of a huge pay-day? While it would be harsh to say that Middlesex choked, they certainly wilted under the strain after putting themselves in a position to walk away with the money. Despite reaching just 117 in their 20 overs, they held T&T’s run chase under control for two-thirds of the innings. Then it all came apart, with the difficulty of catching under the low floodlights a deciding factor. The vital momentum shift began when Ed Joyce dropped Bravo at long-on on 6, despite having time to steady himself under the high catch. At that point T&T needed 54 off 38 balls and swing became decisive in Neil Carter’s comeback over which cost 18 runs.Moments earlier Carter dropped a chance at short third-man with Bravo on 17, then the first ball of his third over – the 17th of the innings – was lofted high towards long-off by Ramdin. Eoin Morgan back-tracked only to palm the ball over the ropes. It would have been a far from simple catch in brilliant sunshine, while playing for drink money, never mind when the fielders have thoughts of thousands of dollars on their minds, but it showed Middlesex were fraying at the edges. To make matters worse for Middlesex – and Carter – two balls later a high no-ball was upper-cut over third man for six. Suddenly, from needing more than nine-an-over, T&T required a run-a-ball with Bravo and Ramdin riding on their adrenalin rush. Shaun Udal recalled one of his trump cards, hoping Tyron Henderson could repeat his match-winning heroics from the domestic Twenty20 final in July, but Bravo and Ramdin knew they had done the hard work.Ramdin couldn’t quite see the chase across the line, falling to Ben Scott’s second outstanding stumping of the innings, but Bravo finished the match in a fitting manner as he drove Henderson into the stands. Bravo, the younger brother of West Indies allrounder Dwayne, showed immense maturity after coming in at 46 for 3 in the 11th over.T&T’s top order had been tied down by fine new-ball bowling from Murtagh and Carter before Dawid Malan showed the other side of his game. Malan’s first ball was slog-swept out to deep midwicket by Sherwin Ganga – where a catch was, for once, comfortably held – and the fifth beat Daren Ganga with a sharp leg-break.Middlesex have built their Twenty20 success around spin, but not the part-time variety of Malan who had one wicket before this innings. For once, though, their key pairing of Udal and Murali Kartik didn’t have a major bearing on the chase which proved crucial in the final outcome. T&T managed to play out Kartik’s four overs, while Udal was hampered by a hamstring injury he picked up in the pre-match warm-ups. Nothing was going to stop him playing in this match, but while he was pulling up lame his team was pulling up agonisingly short of their jackpot. The match-winning partnership between Bravo and Ramdin was one of the most free-scoring periods of action over the first three matches. Middlesex’s innings had been another struggle containing just six fours and three sixes, which all came from Neil Dexter during his late burst of 39 from 25 balls. He was one of only two Middlesex batsmen, along with Scott, to score at better than a run-a-ball against an impressive T&T attack. Ravi Rampaul began and ended the innings in style to claim four wickets, while the 12 overs of spin – ranging from Samuel Badree’s brisk leg-spin with the new ball, to Sherwin Ganga’s floaty offerings against the club-wielding Henderson – went for 62 runs.Middlesex’s half-way scoring rate of four-an-over can often be seen in the Test arena, but it probably wasn’t what Allen Stanford had in mind, shortly before this match, when he said Test cricket could co-exist with Twenty20. Mid-way through their chase T&T were only marginally in front and it was anyone’s game. It was a battle of nerves and two young West Indians held theirs.

The battle between the bottom two teams in the tournament ended with Mumbai Champs completing a 58-run victory against the Delhi Giants in Gurgaon. It was Mumbai’s first victory in the league, after five defeats, and it came soon after their coach Sandeep Patil had stepped down.Mumbai’s batting clicked after they were put into bat and substantial contributions from Dheeraj Jadhav, Hasan Raza and Ranjit Khirid helped them to a competitive 174. Their bowlers put up a strong defence and Avinash Yadav’s terrific spell of 4 for 18 crippled Delhi’s chase. The home team was dismissed for 116 in the 17.3 overs.Jadhav laid the platform for Mumbai’s total, after they had lost two wickets for 44 runs, with a solid half-century. He found the boundary in each of the first five overs – thrice behind square leg, once over extra cover and over mid-on – but ensured he did not fritter a start. He settled down after Taufeeq Umar was bowled by Abid Nabi and added 72 for the third wicket with Hasan Raza. Jadhav eventually fell for 59, lofting Ali Murtaza to Shane Bond at long-off.The crucial push to the innings came from Raza and Ranjit Khirid, who scored 43 each in quick time. Raza got going by hitting Jai P Yadav over the midwicket boundary and was lucky to survive a dropped catch on the cover boundary when on 15. He favoured the leg side, smashing Shalabh Srivastava for a six over midwicket and a four towards fine leg in the 12th over.Khirid was on 14 when Raza holed out to long-on in the 18th over and he stepped up and took charge. He lifted Nabi for a massive six over the sight-screen and then deposited Srivastava over the boundaries at cover and square leg in the penultimate over to end the innings with a flourish.Delhi’s chase was shaken, after a brisk beginning, when Monish Mishra top-edged to short fine leg and Marvan Atapattu was caught behind off Anupam Sanklecha, leaving them on 36 for 2. S Abbas Ali was trying to build momentum when a flurry of wickets permanently derailed the innings.Dhruv Mahajan was bowled off an inside edge by Khirid with the score on 71 and in the next over – the 11th – Abbas became the first of Yadav’s four wickets. Yadav wrecked the lower-middle order, having Abhinav Bali caught at sweeper and Paul Nixon at cover. In between those dismissals Delhi lost Jai P Yadav and Nabi to run-outs and, at 103 for 8, the contest was over.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Eddie Nketiah links

Crystal Palace are reportedly pushing to bring in Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah as Patrick Vieira eyes striking reinforcements, according to Sky Sports.

Playing his part last term, the 22-year-old managed to notch seven goal contributions in 29 appearances for the Gunners with six goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

In the last moments of the transfer window, he could now be set to swap north London for SE25 as the Eagles eye further attacking depth.

Crystal Palace are keen on the striker and have been embroiled in discussions over a fee, although no such breakthrough has come to light as of yet due to disparities in the clubs’ respective valuations of Nketiah [Sky Sports]. An unnamed German club are also mooted to be in the hunt for his services.

In light of this news, plenty of Crystal Palace diehards took to Twitter to discuss the links with the Arsenal marksman.

Celtic: Preston feared Ali McCann hijack

Preston North End feared that Celtic may have made a late swoop for midfielder Ali McCann on deadline day, according to The Sun (05.09.21, pg. 62), as cited by The 72.

The Lowdown: McCann on the move

Celtic were extremely busy in the final hours of the transfer window, bringing in Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham with minutes remaining prior to the deadline along with sealing a late move for Georgios Giakoumakis.

McCann was also on the move, completing a switch from St Johnstone to English Championship side Preston with just five seconds to spare before the transfer deadline. The Hoops were linked with a move for him late in the window, but a £3m asking price appeared to put them off.

The 21-year-old actually cost just £1.2m, and it seems as if the Hoops may have tried their luck with a late swoop.

The Latest: Preston’s fear

According to The Sun (05.09.21, pg. 62), as cited by The 72, Preston were fearing a late hijack from the Hoops in the hunt for McCann.

Celtic had an extra hour until the Scottish window slammed shut, and if the Deepdale club didn’t get a deal over the line, they were worried that the Hoops could have acted after the English deadline.

The Verdict: Missed a trick

Transferred for just £1.2m, Celtic may live to regret not making their move for McCann this summer.

They have enjoyed success in bringing a young Scottish midfielder to Celtic Park from a fellow Scottish side in David Turnbull from Motherwell, so McCann could have been the next one to follow suit.

Dominic McKay brought in James McCarthy over the summer, while Liam Shaw penned pre-contract terms earlier in the year, but Celtic could be short in the middle following the departures of Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Ryan Christie.

Hopefully it isn’t a repeat of the John McGinn saga back in 2018.
