England delay Champions Trophy decision

The ECB has postponed making a decision on England’s participation in the Champions Trophy by a week

Cricinfo staff05-Aug-2008The ECB has postponed making a decision on England’s participation in the Champions Trophy by a week as it has yet to receive an updated report on the security situation in Pakistan from the ICC.It had been expected that an ICC task force would be in a position to submit its findings by last weekend, but these are now not expected before the end of this week.”The board met this [Monday] morning and we are still waiting for the ICC to send their task force to Pakistan to discuss the security arrangements there,” ECB spokesperson Colin Gibson said. “We are just awaiting those reports and we will confirm our arrangements to Pakistan as soon as possible within probably seven to ten days.”He emphasised that “before taking any decision on the tournament everybody would want to make sure that they have maximum number of pieces of information in hand, and that everything is safe and secure for our players.”A number of England’s players are believed to have made it clear to the ECB that they are not willing to travel to Pakistan, and their position is supported by official Foreign Office advice against visiting the country at the present time. Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, informed the ICC last month that he had personally been told this by players.Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are the three other countries also uncertain about sending their teams to Pakistan in September, and their boards are also waiting for the ICC recommendations.

Pundit still confused why Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho

More than four months later, Steve Howey is still confused as to why Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho.

Despite being less than seven days away from the Carabao Cup final, the Portuguese lost his job following some wretched form domestically.

When Mourinho was sacked, Tottenham were five points adrift of the Champions League places with just six games remaining, whilst they’d recently been embarrassingly knocked out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb, which was their most likely route back into Europe’s elite competition.

Spurs ended up narrowly losing the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City with interim manager Ryan Mason in charge, which ensured their 12-year wait for a major trophy painfully continued.

Mourinho has since been replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, who’ll not only be hoping to get Tottenham back into the Champions League, but is the man tasked with attempting to finally bring silverware to north London.

But Howey exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t understand why Mourinho was moved on in the first place:

“I’m still scratching my head how you’ve got a serial manager that wins trophies in Mourinho, and you sack him on pretty much the day of the final, it’s mind-blowing.”

Rejuvenated Tait raring to go

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler on a comeback trail, has said his self-imposed exile from the game was “really not that big a deal”, as was portrayed by the media when he announced his decision back in January

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler, says his self-imposed exile from the game was “really not that big a deal”, as was portrayed by the media when he announced his decision in January. Tait said he always had the desire to return, and that his condition couldn’t be compared to that of England’s Marcus Trescothick, who announced his retirement citing mental stress.Tait is taking his first steps back into the international arena after being named in the Australia A team for a one-day tri-series in India, which also includes a side from New Zealand. Having recovered from a virus he picked up on the journey to India, Tait stuck to routine warm-up exercises and opted not to bowl at the nets during the washed-out second day of Australia A’s three-day match against the Indians.”I didn’t want to make a fuss about it [the break],” Tait said. “The media probably read a little too much into it. Back then, my body was acting up, feeling a little sore, and as a result I wasn’t really enjoying my cricket. When you’re out there in the field playing for Australia and not enjoying it you know something is seriously wrong. I just wanted to take a break from the game, simple as that.”Trescothick sounded like he was in a much worse position than me. [Steve] Harmison had issues with touring but now he’s come pretty strong and is part of the England one-day squad.”Life came a full circle for Tait in 2007, starting with the highs of the World Cup, during which he picked up 23 wickets, and ending with a wicketless performance in the Perth Test against India in January. Tait had undergone elbow surgery earlier in the season and a series of niggling problems took their toll on him. Less than a fortnight after his Test return, Tait announced his decision to take a break. It took him three months to even entertain thoughts of making a comeback.”I was carrying a couple of injuries back then and getting up in the morning was a pain,” he said. “I didn’t really seek any professional help. I just talked to friends, family and coaches in South Australia to help me pull through. My family was surprised initially but they supported my decision as I really wasn’t being myself.”After three months, I was ready to start training. I started watching cricket videos and suddenly felt like being there.”Tait took his first public steps towards a comeback in May when he joined the Test squad at a training camp in Brisbane. He retained his Cricket Australia contract and the board took care of his rehabilitation. The recovery process, he said, hadn’t affected his bowling action, and he expected to hit his peak speed soon, provided he’s used in short bursts. He’s fully aware, however, that he cannot walk back into the Australian team, with the likes of Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Bracken vying for places. “I know it’s difficult to get back into this Australian side and you’ve got to be patient,” he said. “The break has refreshed me physically and mentally. I just need to go out there and prove to myself, the selectors, and everybody else, that I’m ok.”

Crooks reveals Gers regret

Former Glasgow Rangers man Matt Crooks has revealed his biggest regret is not being able to take advantage of his time at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Crooks’ spell at Rangers

Crooks made the move to Rangers from Accrington Stanley on a free transfer (Transfermarkt) during the 2016 summer transfer window.

However, he made just three appearances in all competitions for the club before making the switch to Scunthorpe on loan and then completing a permanent move to Northampton Town.

The Latest: Crooks admits regret

Speaking to Radio Tees (via HITC), Crooks admitted his regret at not taking advantage of his time at Ibrox. He said:

“It’s Middlesbrough. I think you probably have one opportunity to come to a club of this size. In my career, I did have the chance to go to Rangers and I’ve always said that’s probably my biggest regret not taking advantage of that.

“As soon as I heard Middlesbrough coming in for me, I felt like it was a redemption period coming in for me.

“I want to prove I can do it at a big club like this and perform in front of big crowds and the big fanbase they’ve got so it’s got a massive appeal for me and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Verdict: Shame

While Crooks failed to make the grade at Ibrox, he has done rather well since leaving Rangers. He netted 21 goals in 97 appearances for Rotherham, and Middlesbrough are a solid Championship club with the chance of playing in the Premier League. In two games for the club, he has already managed one goal, taking his career tally to 43.

Unfortunately, his time at Rangers just didn’t work out – perhaps it came too early on in his career, and it was at a time when the Gers were still recovering from their demotion to League Two. However, at just 27, perhaps the Gers may have a look at him once more if he continues to shine?

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at these club struggles.

Titular novamente, Mancuello exalta gol marcado: 'Estava precisando'

– É bom fazer gol porque a gente ganha confiança.

Leeds must start Summerville vs Crewe

While Leeds United may not have had the greatest starts to the Premier League season, they will be hopeful of tasting their first victory of the new campaign when they take on Crewe Alexandra in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side come into the game off the back of a 2-2 draw against Everton on Saturday, and the Whites boss will surely be ringing the changes to give a few youngsters and fringe players the chance to shine.

One starlet who Bielsa should be looking to unleash tonight is Crysencio Summerville.

Described as a “bag of tricks” by Chris Powell – his former coach when he was a teenager at Dutch side ADO Den Haag – the 19-year-old scored a hat-trick against Burnley on just his second start for the under-23s last season.

In total, he bagged an impressive six goals and provided a further six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 games, netting in the final game of the campaign.

Against Guiseley during pre-season, it was Summerville who put in the kind of performance which will have given Bielsa some food for thought.

After watching his goal-scoring display, Leeds Live’s Joe Donnohue said on Twitter: “Cody Drameh and Crysencio Summerville were great together down the right flank for Leeds’ U23s last season. Seems like more of the same this year. Drameh an excellent carrier, weightless going forward. Summerville a wriggler, impossible to handle.”

The 19-year-old is an exciting winger who can play on either flank, and while he might be diminutive in stature at just 5 foot 9, he more than makes up for it with his quick feet and agility, much like Leeds talisman Raphinha.

Summerville himself said earlier this year: “I often hear that there are doubts because of my physical condition, but when you are on the field, you are not concerned with that. There are often big defenders in front of me, I have to be smart about that. I know I’m agile and try to play with my mind.”

The fact that the young Dutchman was named on the bench against the Toffees on Saturday, and was only brought on at half-time in the under-23s’ 4-2 defeat to Spurs, could well be an indication that he will feature tonight against Crewe.

Given how his directness and willingness to make things happen is so similar to Raphinha, Leeds fans will surely be in for a treat if he starts tonight.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…
