Surrey lead by 513 going into last day.

Hampshire’s bowlers toiled in the September sun as Frizzell Champions elect Surrey amassed 422 runs, with Ian Ward striking his third successive first-class century and Graham Thorpe keeping faith with the England selectors with a superb 143

Vic Isaacs13-Sep-2002Hampshire’s bowlers toiled in the September sun as Frizzell Champions elect Surrey amassed 422 runs, with Ian Ward striking his third successive first-class century and Graham Thorpe keeping faith with the England selectors with a superb 143. The expected morning declaration will mean Hampshire needing 514 to win, or more appropriately to hold out for a draw.Young Scott Newman failed for the second time in the match when he was trapped in front by James Schofield. Nadim Shahid playing the junior roll to skipper Ian Ward, was also out cheap edging a ball well wide outside the off stump from Mascarenhas to the wicket-keeper.This however put together Ward and Graham Thorpe looking for a good “net” before he flies out to the Ashes tour. This was done in some style, with the pair driving, glancing and cutting the Hampshire bowlers to shreds.Ward who had already helped himself to a century on the first day, smote 156, before he came down the wicket to the occasional bowling of Jimmy Adams and was stumped by Pothas. His innings lasted just over five hours, and in that time shared a 197 run partnership with Thorpe.Thorpe was playing like he had never been missing, his innings of just over four hours had all the trade mark shots we know of old. He was finally out when he drove at the workhorse James Tomlinson and was caught at mid-on.The remaining batsmen spent the rest of the evening having fun at the expense of the bowlers, and some pundits expressed surprise that a declaration wasn’t forthcoming in the evening. Batty, Bicknell and Salisbury all perished playing expansive shots as the visitors brought up their second 400 tally of the match.Neil Johnson was unable to bowl, so much of the work was done by the young attack of Schofield and Tomlinson, and both came out of the day with credit.

Ashley talks to NUFC takeover consortium

Lee Ryder has shared what Mike Ashley has told the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium amid their latest Newcastle United takeover stance.

The Lowdown: Arbitration delay

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the Premier League over the failing of the takeover deal between Ashley and the the consortium has been delayed until early next year because of issues with the disclosure of evidence.

The hearing was expected to take place this month, but now further delays have been implemented, meaning that the North East club will now go into another season with yet more uncertainty.

The Latest: Ryder latest

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder, who has been following the whole takeover saga closely, has shared that Ashley has assured the consortium that the ‘door will remain open’ for them to complete a deal.

However, some observers of the takeover bid have concerns that they will ‘lose patience’ with the process and the top flight eventually.

The Verdict: Limbo

The Tyneside club have very much been left in limbo by the news that the arbitration proceedings have been delayed even further, adding to the delays that they have already been forced to put up with.

While holding the process until next year is certainly not ideal, it at least means that there is still a chance that the takeover can be completed eventually, providing that the results go in the favour of the Magpies.

Nonetheless, with a large chunk of the summer transfer window already gone and the new 2021/22 season a matter of weeks away now, the Toon Army now has to put up with what is a very uncertain time for the future of NUFC.

Expecting employers to pay union fees is a new pitch

When the dust finally settles on the negotiations between New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA), the Player’s approach will be a textbook example of how not to run a dispute

Lynn McConnell23-Oct-2002When the dust finally settles on the negotiations between New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA), the Player’s approach will be a textbook example of how not to run a dispute. The NZCPA has shown itself to be a genuine new boy on the industrial block – but its demand, that New Zealand Cricket fund its operation is naivete personified and is symptomatic of why it has failed to win friends and influence people.A quote from the Players’ document to yesterday’s meeting of the parties noted: “There is no allocation for CPA funding, insurance cover or for any professional development programme.”Hard-bitten, committed unionists will be falling about laughing at the ridiculousness of this situation. While those unionists might think there is probably merit in the utopian notion of having employers pay union fees, and all the union’s costs, presumably with an open cheque book, they would also appreciate that a position of independence from the parent body is the most basic requirement of any union that hopes for a degree of freedom in running its own affairs, and setting its own policies and practices. But this whole issue has been one of the players being removed from reality of life in the industrial world. Not many unionists get paid for facing up to the fastest bowlers in the world, but they do know something about battling for their rights in every day work situations.Joe Public, who willingly pays out of his own pocket for his union cover, will be wondering what the cricketers are on about. And he will certainly be wondering at their tactics. Was it really necessary for players to withdraw their services for the month of October at such an early stage of negotiations?Did they not foresee the prospect that New Zealand Cricket would look to lay open the books in terms of player payments?Did the players’ representatives really believe they could win a situation in mediation when claiming New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive Martin Snedden had breached a bargaining protocol when he released his own papers? In a world more attuned to dealing with professional sporting payments than in the past, the payments the players received, and their request for more, could hardly have been expected to swing public support in behind them.Apart from the basic fact that no self-respecting union-affiliated employee would ever want his union to be within shouting distance of his employer, the claim for payment by the game’s governing body smacks of stupefying insensitivity to their very own case.It is not as if the cricketers have the greatest of winning records, especially in the money-earning side of the game, the One-Day Internationals.Joe Public will certainly be querying the strength of the players’ convictions.Industrial action involves sacrifice by the greater number for the longer term good.By being tied to the employers’ purse strings, the NZCPA clearly want their cake baked for them and to eat it every day, now and forever, at New Zealand Cricket’s on-going expense. There is an issue of credibility here, but this fact seems to have escaped the NZCPA.If nothing else, the genuine commitment to improving the players’ lot would carry a great deal more strength in the public sector, if players were paying their own costs out of their own pockets to meet the expenses incurred in the negotiating processes. And it is to be wondered, if the players’ do not succeed in their aims, will they suddenly find themselves facing a bill of considerable expense? Presumably this will be shared equally, meaning the players at the upper end of the payments will be paying the same as the players at the lower end.Fair enough to have a disagreement with your employer, and fair enough that you should be looking for greater support for players on the lower end of the scale. But how about some genuine meaning to the depth of concern? It should be remembered that while the players have withdrawn their services for the month of October, they have still been turning up to their employers’ facilities to practice, many of the players have still been fulfilling their duties as coaching officers, and presumably still being paid for the work.Seemingly they feel there is no clash of interests here. The more this goes on, the more it seems like a Clayton’s dispute, the dispute you are having when you are not really having a dispute. The degree of benevolence shown by New Zealand Cricket and the Major Associations toward the players in this issue is considerable. In a normal industrial dispute, workers wouldn’t dare even contemplate going near their employers’ facilities. It would be like crossing a picket line.By the same token, the employers could have locked the players out of their facilities and denied them their practice opportunities. That this hasn’t happened, is probably because the employers, New Zealand Cricket are conscious of the need to have players shaping up on November 1 to be in reasonable form for what is a crucial season ahead.Clearly some lessons have been learned in this whole exercise. But it will take the players and their association a good deal of time to recover from the effects of this dispute. And meantime, there’s a fair chance the details of the Players’ Association negotiation process will be filling the “How not to …” textbooks at industrial relations colleges all over the country.

Journalist reveals West Ham’s transfer window priority

The London Evening Standard’s West Ham United reporter, Jack Rosser, believes that the club are aiming to strengthen in two key areas this summer, after a deal for Alphonse Areola was confirmed.

The Hammers have made just one permanent signing in this transfer window, bringing in Craig Dawson on a permanent deal after his initial loan arrival from Watford.

In terms of new signings, one has to feel that the Hammers need new blood, especially given the fact that they will be playing Europa League football this term.

A lack of movement may set alarm bells ringing amongst supporters and Rosser thinks that there are two key positions that the Irons are hopeful of strengthening: central midfield and up front.

Indeed, there is a lack of depth in both areas, with Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek the clear first-choice partnership in midfield, and Mark Noble the main back-up, while Michail Antonio is their only senior striker.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Rosser said: “Left back is not quite the top priority but it’s somewhere, if they had the money, which this summer for most clubs is quite a big if, then they would look to do something. However, striker and central midfield are the areas they want to get sorted above anything else.”

Shinnie has game to forget despite draw

It would hardly be an overstatement to say that the build-up to Derby County’s Championship campaign has been one of the most challenging any team has ever endured ahead of a new season.

Indeed, with Wayne Rooney having just nine fit outfield players prior to the arrival of centre-back pair Curtis Davies and Richard Stearman on Friday, it appeared – for a worrying length of time – as if the 35-year-old would struggle to muster up 11 players for the fixture against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Despite this, the Rams put up an incredibly valiant display against the Terriers, taking the lead in the match through the impressive Curtis Davies late on in the first half, only for Huddersfield centre-back Naby Sarr to repeat his counterpart’s feat on the stroke of half time, with the game ultimately finishing honours even.

However, while there were a number of fine performances in the Derby ranks, with Rooney undoubtedly delighted with his team getting something out of the game, there were also a few concerning displays – perhaps most notably from Graeme Shinnie.

While the midfielder picked up the Jack Stamps Player of the Year award for last season before the game, if his performances remain at the level of the Huddersfield clash going forwards, he will certainly struggle to win it again for 2021/22.

Indeed, the 30-year-old was wasteful with the ball, completing none of his five attempted crosses and just one of his four attempted long balls and giving away possession on a whopping 18 occasions.

The £6.2k-per-week man also lost eight of his 15 duels over the course of the 90 minutes, in addition to being dribbled past once and conceding three fouls – with The Telegraph journalist and self-professed Derby fan Ryan Bourne stating his belief that Shinnie looked well “off the pace” in the game.

All in all, the Scotland international’s metrics saw him earn a SofaScore match rating of 6.5, the joint third-worst of the 11 Rams players to start the fixture.

As such, with Derby facing what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship campaign in 2021/22, they will certainly need one of their best performers from last season to step up his game if they are to have any hope of securing survival in the division come next May.

UAE introduce home-grown quotas

The Emirates Cricket Board has ordered that at least four of the country’s 15-man Asia Cup squad must be Emiratis

Cricinfo staff28-May-2008The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has ordered that at least four of the country’s 15-man Asia Cup squad must be Emiratis. The UAE side has traditionally been almost entirely made up of expats from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India who are eligible under the ICC’s four-year qualification rules. This was at its most apparent during the 1996 World Cup when the only non expat in the UAE side was Sultan Zarawani, the captain, whose place was more down to his passion and wealth than cricketing ability. But the ECB has now moved to counter this with the introduction of a quota. Mohammad Tauqir has been named as the deputy to the captain, Saqib Ali, while Fahad Alhashmi, Alawi Shukri and Salman Farooq have also made the tour party.Shukri, who had been campaigning for such a system, told The National that it was “a very good day … we have won one small battle”. He plays for UAE Nationals Club, a side of UAE passport holders plus three overseas players. However, Shukri admitted to the newspaper that he was not exactly in the best state of mind for the tournament. “I have barely picked up a bat in three weeks, which probably is not the best preparation for playing against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,” he said. “But hopefully I will be OK.”
