Whelan tips Leeds to make more signings

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is confident that the Whites will be doing plenty more business in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Leeds make transfer progress

Marcelo Bielsa has already made some progress this summer, signing left-back Junior Firpo from Barcelona, making up for the loss of Ezgjan Alioski.

The hope is that this is only the start of Leeds’ spending, however, as they look to make serious inroads ahead of another Premier League season.

The Latest: Whelan confident of more signings

Whelan fully believes that the addition of Firpo is only the start, telling Football Insider that those high up at the club will be working hard on signings.

The 46-year-old, who recently returned to Elland Road to take up a new role working in the community with the club’s Foundation, said:

“I’m sure the club have got their eyes on many people. They will be looking at other targets now.

“The Euros has finished now and business, it will get done. The club will want to get deals done as quickly as possibly. You want to get new faces into the squad as quickly as possible so they can get to know their teammates and get used to their surroundings.

“There is lots of work going on in the background to try and get these deals done. It is never as easy as you think. Victor Orta, Mr. Radrizzani and the manager will be doing a lot of work behind the scenes to get Leeds United to where they want.

“It is about giving Leeds the best chance of success next season.”

The Verdict: Busy summer ahead

It is vital that Leeds build on last season’s ninth-place finish, not resting on their laurels and hopefully pushing further towards the European places.

Now is the time for the club to be bold and bring in top-quality players in various areas of the pitch, allowing Bielsa to rotate his squad, keep it fresh but not lose quality at the same time.

This feels like a pivotal summer in the transfer market, so Leeds need to get it right or risk going backwards. One look at Sheffield United, who also finished ninth a year after promotion only to then end up bottom of the Premier League last season, offers a warning as to how quickly fortunes can change if the right moves aren’t made.

At least Whelan’s comments suggest that the Whites aren’t being complacent this summer.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly pulled out of a move for one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Journalist: Manchester United are frontrunners for Varane deal

Manchester United are the frontrunners to sign Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane this summer, according to Spanish football journalist Euan McTear.

After losing Sergio Ramos to PSG earlier this summer, Real Madrid won’t want to lose another star centre-back but with only one year left on his contract, the Spanish giants may look to cash-in on him, rather than risk losing him for free next year.

After playing for France at the Euros, Varane will now turn his attention back to club football and where he will be playing this season coming, with McTear telling TT: “At this point, Manchester United seem like the frontrunners”.

Varane has played plethora of trophies in his time at the Bernabeu and McTear thinks there’s definitely a space for the French defender at Old Trafford.

He added: “They’re are one of the clubs that do have a space there, next to Maguire there is a question mark, some of the other clubs have their two settled centre-backs so Manchester United makes a bit of sense”.

It looks like United are ready to make their move for Varane, with The Guardian reporting that the Red Devils are preparing a bid and that Varane would like to play in the Premier League.

Hoggard the best in England, says Sehwag

Virender Sehwag, India’s centurion on day one of the second Test at Trent Bridge, praised England’s Matthew Hoggard for his bowling performance, while adding that England might have been disappointed not to take more wickets

Stephen Lamb08-Aug-2002Virender Sehwag, India’s centurion on day one of the second Test at Trent Bridge, praised England’s Matthew Hoggard for his bowling performance, while adding that England might have been disappointed not to take more wickets.”I have never seen the ball swing like that and England could have done better,” Sehwag told reporters. “I knew I could get a hundred if I could stay at the wicket. “He (Hoggard) is the best bowler in England and the best bowler in this Test.”Asked about the constant comparisons between him and Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag said: “I am very happy because Sachin is a great batsman, I did copy him and so I don’t mind people comparing us. The only difference between us is on the scoreboard – there are 27 centuries difference.”Hoggard, who recently rose to fifth in the PriceWaterhousecoopers Test bowling rankings, admitted it was hard to control the movement.”When it does that much it’s very hard to find the right line and length – itwas swinging from off-stump but not from leg. Sometimes you can have too much swing, although I would like to put the conditions in a suitcase and carry them everywhere with me.”Everybody bowled tight and I think it’s just a matter of time before theystart nicking the edges and providing chances.”

– Vamos priorizar sempre o próximo jogo independentemente do campeonato. Penso no próximo jogo.

Apesar do resultado negativo, os jogadores rubro-negros procuram destacar pontos positivos do time diante do Cruz-Maltino.
