Pakistan confidence will not be affected by embarrassing loss

Pakistan might have suffered an embarrassing innings and 54 run loss to New Zealand A at Bert Sutcliffe Oval today, but coach Javed Miandad said the side’s confidence was still strong heading into the National Bank Test series starting on Thursday

Lynn McConnell05-Mar-2001Pakistan might have suffered an embarrassing innings and 54 run loss to New Zealand A at Bert Sutcliffe Oval today, but coach Javed Miandad said the side’s confidence was still strong heading into the National Bank Test series starting on Thursday.NZ A took only 27 balls to take five wickets for 16 runs to end the game this morning. The injured Saeed Anwar did not bat.It was a pathetic and limp response from a Pakistan team supposedly looking to get in some batting practice in preparation for the Test series after the disappointment of losing the one-day series.Coach Javed Miandad, who missed the rout as he was working in the nets with players not involved in the match, shook the defeat off by saying there were no real batsmen left in the game.”There were only bowlers left.”Saeed Anwar has a problem, it is difficult to say anything about that yet, it is too early,” he said.Miandad said it was obviously disappointing to lose a game in that fashion.”But you can’t do anything about it except work hard for the next game,” he said. The lack of experienced players in the side was a factor. Saeed, Wasim Akram, Moin Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq were all missing from the game. The fact that all but Moin have injuries has to be a concern going into the first Test starting on Thursday.”They were all youngsters in this game. A few of them have just come from Pakistan. It is hard to adjust.”It is difficult after playing one-day cricket but the young guys have to look after themselves,” he said. But Miandad warned that Pakistan could still be a force in the Test series.”Everyone knows about the Pakistan team. In the 1992 World Cup we weren’t doing so well but once we clicked we won the World Cup.”We haven’t lost any confidence. When you lost Test matches then you can say your confidence is affected.”I’m not that disappointed, it was not a full-strength team.”There is no need to panic, You will see what this team will do in the Test match,” he said. The injuries are clearly a concern and Wasim Akram was not at the ground today as he was seeing a doctor about his side strain which developed during the last one-dayer against New Zealand. While Miandad admitted it was frustrating being so far from home and not being able to call up replacements quickly due to the 10 days required to process visas and the two-days of travelling.Miandad said there were no players on stand-by at the moment but the side would be talking to the selection panel to tell them what they were facing in New Zealand.”But the boys are confident. Wasim is confident and has said he will play. Saeed has said he will play and Inzamam has said he will play,” Miandad said. The NZ A players wasted no opportunity to complete the task.Andrew Penn removed the biggest potential stumbling block by bowling Younis Khan in his second over. Next ball, Mushtaq Ahmed tried to fend off a short ball from Penn and hit the ball high towards slips where Lou Vincent, fielding at third slip took the catch.Waqar Younis took the chance to hit out for six runs in the rest of the over and then from the first ball of Chris Drum’s next over, Saqlain Mushtaq wound up an excessively extravagant shot and was bowled easily. Then four balls later Arshad Khan was well beaten and bowled.Waqar took a single at the start of Penn’s next over, which was about the worst that could happen as predictably Mohammad Sami was out to Penn’s next ball, edging the chance to Glen Sulzberger at first slip.Pakistan all out for 124, having spent only 26 minutes in the middle and losing five wickets for 16 runs.

Millwall dealt blow in Porteous pursuit

Millwall have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring Ryan Porteous to The Den this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that Galatasaray are preparing a £1m plus add ons offer for the Hibernian centre-back in the coming weeks, with the Turkish side boasting the advantage of offering the 22-year-old the potential of playing Champions League football next season.

Millwall have also been credited with an interest in the Scotland U21 international this summer, and were believed to have had an offer of £1m rejected for the defender back in the January transfer window.

Rowett will be gutted

With Gary Rowett looking to build on a highly impressive 2020/21 campaign with Millwall next time around, the news of Galatasaray’s interest in one of the 47-year-old’s likely summer targets will undoubtedly come as gutting news for the Lions boss.

Indeed, the £630k-rated Porteous would very much appear to be an excellent addition to the Millwall backline ahead of next season, as the youngster was one of Jack Ross’ stars last term.

Over his 34 Scottish Premiership appearances for Hibs, the £2.7k-per-week centre-back helped his side keep 11 clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and winning 6.9 duels per fixture.

These returns saw the 22-year-old earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as the club’s seventh-best performer in the Scottish top-flight – playing a huge role in Hibs going on to seal a rather remarkable third-place finish in the league.

As such, if Galatasaray do indeed go on to sign the player whom Jack Ross dubbed a “brilliant” talent, it will be a huge blow for both Millwall and Rowett, as the club and manager will have to turn their attentions elsewhere in order to strengthen the Lions defence ahead of their upcoming campaign.

In other news: Rowett must sanction Millwall swoop for “highly-rated” £1.5k-p/w bargain this summer

Bowlers give West Indies the edge in final Test

Just when they were being written off

Marcus Prior20-Apr-2001Just when they were being written off. It has not been an easy time to be aWest Indian cricketer, but on Friday in the fifth Test against South AfricaCarl Hooper’s men finally came good. Pumped up and purposeful, theydismissed the tourists for 141 – South Africa’s lowest ever total againstthe West Indies – and took an 84-run first innings lead.By stumps the home side were 34 without loss, a healthy lead of 118.Leon Garrick’s first innings golden duck on debut was a distant memory as hefinished unbeaten on 21 with opening partner Chris Gayle 10.Perhaps it was the desire to give Courtney Walsh the send-off hedeserves, possibly the fear of the fines system now in place in the WestIndian camp, or maybe just sheer bloody-mindedness brought on by a desire tobring a depressing winless run to an end. There is of course still a longway to go in this match, but for the first time in the series, the WestIndies have made themselves genuine favourites to win. After finishing off the West Indies first innings for 225, the SouthAfrican reply did not start well, Gary Kirsten looking to force Walsh awayoff the back foot and edging to Gayle at third slip. It was his thirdduck in five Test innings, and he has now scored just 86 runs in his eightknocks since the century in Guyana.Cameron Cuffy, who was unfortunate to be dropped after an impressive butluckless performance in the third Test in Barbados, struck in the first overafter lunch. It was a beast of a delivery – climbing steeply past the noseof Herschelle Gibbs (18), taking the edge and well caught by Ridley Jacobswith the gloves above his head.Daryll Cullinan (6) has been the scourge of the West Indies bowlers allseries, but he was not to inflict any great damage this time. After pullingCuffy emphatically through mid-wicket for four, he flashed loosely in hisnext over and Brian Lara took a very good low catch at first slip. The score had moved to 51 when Jacques Kallis (15) departed, the bigright-hander getting an inside-edge onto the pad as he looked to forcethrough the on-side, the ball ballooning back to bowler Dillon who pocketeda straightforward, if rather unusual, return chance.Dinanath Ramnarine bowled tidily before seeing Lance Klusener rifle himover mid-on for six, the left-hander’s struggle for form then coming undoneon 13 when he played all around a straight delivery from Walsh whichclattered into his off-stump.Walsh then extended his world record again in spectacular style. MarkBoucher worked hard to reach 13 and must have thought he had picked up fourwhen he met a short delivry with a full-blooded pull, but Garrick somehowclung on to a magnificent two-handed catch diving low to his left atsquare-leg.Shaun Pollock (24) and Neil McKenzie (45) then set about repairing adistinctly perilous position of 97-6, but after McKenzie survived a catchreferred to the television umpire on 41, Pollock fell trying to glide Dillondown to third man.It was not before the South African captain had become just the eighthall-rounder, and the fifth fastest, to reach the rare double of 2 000 runsand 200 wickets in Tests. Playing in his 56th Test, Pollock reached thedouble in glorious style with a six pulled over the longest boundary of theground off Cuffy.Pollock’s departure spelled the end for South Africa as four wickets fellin 21 balls for the addition of just four more runs. McKenzie was leg-beforesweeping at Ramnarine, Justin Kemp spooned Dillon to mid-on to be out for aduck and Paul Adams edged to second slip to give Carl Hooper his hundredthTest catch and Dillon his fourth wicket of the innings. It seemed an age since the South Africans needed a further six overs andfive balls to prize out the final West Indies wicket at the start of the morning session.Resuming on 214-9, Walsh and Ramnarine took the score to 225 before Walshdrove uppishly at captain Pollock and Adams took a superb runningand then diving catch at mid-on.

Pundit claims McGeady wants more money at Sunderland - Exclusive

Aiden McGeady’s dazzling footwork was once again not enough to get Sunderland back into the Championship, but he is still yet to sign a new deal on Wearside and former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey believes the winger will be holding out for more money from the club.

During the second half of last season, the Black Cats were eventually taken over by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus who became the youngest owner in English football, and with a lot of financial power himself and in his family, Sunderland could splash the cash this summer.

McGeady was shunned out of the first-team picture during the first half of the season under former boss, Phil Parkinson, however Lee Johnson brought him straight back in and despite playing just 24 league games he managed to top the assist chart with 16 and get into the WhoScored team of the season with a 7.4 rating.

It would be a huge blow for Sunderland to lose McGeady although it could be for the best to move him on if he is holding out for more money because the club has new owners – something Howey spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern about:

“He might be holding out for more money or he could be a little bit annoyed with how he was treated because he was exiled a little bit earlier but ultimately, that wasn’t under the manager who is there now.

“He made the League One Team of the Season this year, so even though the club is not basking in money, they do have new owners and he could want them to pay him more.”

There is no doubting McGeady’s qualities on the ball as he is carried Sunderland numerous times to victory or back into games, however at 35-years-old he may now see this as his final big payday before retiring or returning back to Ireland.

Another contract rebel is Charlie Wyke, who is also set to become a free agent later this summer unless he decides to sign the new deal that is on the table for him but after scoring 25 goals in League One he may want to test himself in the Championship.
