Despite having rarely been utilised by Derby County so far this season, Wayne Rooney must unleash Patrick Roberts at Pride Park this Saturday.

Since joining Derby on a four-month loan deal back in February, Roberts has started just 10 games for the Rams, making a further 13 appearances from the bench.

In truth, the 24-year-old has not particularly impressed when he has been selected by Rooney, having failed to score a single goal, providing just one assist and creating only one big chance over his total of 23 appearances for the Rams.

However, considering he has only averaged 40 minutes per appearance, the argument can easily be made that Roberts has not had ample opportunity to show what he is truly capable of when he is settled within a side.

Such capability was seen during a number of loan spells at Celtic, when the winger scored six goals and provided one assist over 11 Premiership fixtures in the club’s 2015/16 campaign, bagged nine goals and registered 14 assists over 32 league appearances the following season and provided four assists in eight league appearances in 2017/18.

Not only are these returns impressive, the occasions of his goal involvements is an equally important factor. The Manchester City loanee was most profitable in the clashes with Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers, being directly involved in seven goals – one goal and six assists – in derby games during his time in Glasgow.

Indeed, Roberts provided more assists against Gers than against any other side in his time at Parkhead.

As such, it is evident that the 24-year-old, who Brendan Rodgers claimed has “an eye for goal”, is very much a big-game player – and with what is undoubtedly Derby’s biggest game of the season coming up against Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday, Roberts could well make all the difference for the Rams.

Furthermore, with Rooney’s team scoring just eight goals over their last 13 league fixtures, something simply has to change against the Owls, as even a draw – coupled with a Rotherham United win – could see the Rams relegated.

With drastic times calling for drastic measures, Rooney should give Roberts the chance to save the club’s season on Saturday, as he has proven the difference in big games before.

Para isto, precisa vencer o Bota no Allianz Parque, e torcer para que o Flamengo não vença o Coritiba e que o Santos seja derrotado pelo Cruzeiro.

What’s the word?

According to the Sunday Mirror (2nd May 2021, page 69), current interim boss Ryan Mason is under consideration for the vacant Spurs role on a permanent basis.

It’s thought that the 29-year-old, who was appointed on a temporary basis to replace Jose Mourinho until the end of the season, is now a genuine contender as there’s a growing belief that giving him the job would appease the fanbase.

They also claim that Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy haven’t given up hope of convincing Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, whilst Roberto Martinez and Nuno Santo also feature on his shortlist.

Shades of Jol

This would certainly be a bold and interesting move, but we shouldn’t be surprised if it does come to fruition as it has happened before in N17.

Martin Jol was never supposed to become manager of Spurs, it – kind of just fell on his lap.

Back in the summer of 2004, the Dutchman was appointed as Jacques Santini’s assistant manager but the Frenchman soon resigned after just 13 matches in charge and Jol was confirmed as their next head coach.

Mason’s playing career was tragically cut short and having come through the academy system at Hotspur Way, the North London outfit offered him a chance at forging a coaching career.

He first joined in 2018 before being appointed U19 academy coach in 2019, and then head of player development U17 to U23 in August 2020. It does speak volumes that Levy has trusted him with such a huge role, though there is clearly some natural progression going on.

Under his tenure so far, Spurs have won two out of two Premier League games and lost the Carabao Cup final, so it’s not the worst start imaginable, especially given the latter occasion was only his second-ever match in senior management.

Ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino once backed Mason to have a big future in management. He told the club’s official website back in 2018 (via the Metro):

“He will be great in football and he’s going to be a manager or whatever he wants to do because he’s such a clever person. He’s got a football brain. He’s had success in football as a player and he’s going to succeed in everything that he wants to do in the future.”

High praise indeed and merely a little insight into why Levy could be truly considering him full-time. Mason, unlike many candidates, at least knows what the football club means, too.

Whether it’s the right move or not remains to be seen but you wouldn’t call Jol’s time a complete disaster, so perhaps Spurs could feel see shades of the Dutchman back at the club by hiring a former member of the coaching staff straight into the hotseat.

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he expects teams to try and get Bamford out of Elland Road in the near future.

This comes amid reported interest in the 27-year-old striker, with The Athletic (via TEAMtalk) claiming that Liverpool are keen on a potential summer swoop.

Bamford has really impressed for the Whites this season, recently reaching the 15-goal mark in the Premier League after he scored against Tottenham to help inspire his side to a brilliant 3-1 victory.

And now Palmer is expecting clubs to have a good look at him as they try to bolster their squads.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about Bamford, the ex-Leeds player said:

“I mean, listen, clubs will look at him and think, ‘we could get him out for decent money and he’s a good squad player to have.’ “

The same Athletic report also states that Bamford secretly signed a contract extension last summer, keeping him at the club until 2023, so there is probably no reason for Leeds to panic.

But with Jurgen Klopp clearly a fan of the player, describing him as “exceptional”, this reported interest certainly does sound plausible.

Roberto Firmino has not been among the goals this season, so Liverpool may very well move for a new No.9 this summer.
