Brendan Rodgers can welcome defender Caglar Soyuncu back to the Leicester City fray ahead of the Foxes’ FA Cup semi-final showdown with Southampton.

The Turkish defender has missed the last two Premier League matches having tested positive whilst on international duty, both games the Foxes lost to Manchester City and West Ham United.

However, with the former SC Freiburg centre-back looking “terrific” in training according to Foxes boss Rodgers, he should be restored immediately to the Leicester backline against the Saints at Wembley.

Put simply, Soyuncu is one of Leicester’s best defenders and should not be elbowed out of the starting line-up in place of Daniel Amartey, who has been deputising in the Turk’s absence.

According to WhoScored, the two defenders are actually level on both tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League at 0.9 and one respectively.

Nevertheless, Soyuncu, who earns £45k per week at the King Power Stadium, excels in anticipating danger by racking up 3.7 clearances per game compared to Amartey’s two.

Meanwhile, the Turk continues to better his Ghanaian teammate on the ball, where he possesses far more confidence. The 24-year-old has a better pass success rate, whilst completing more passes per game than Amartey and also contributing a surprise 0.2 key passes.

Whilst it is clear to see that Soyuncu is a far more accomplished defender, his inclusion also produces tangible results.

In matches where the centre-back has played this season, Leicester have conceded just 0.96 goals per game in all competitions but with him excluded, that number shoots up sharply to 1.14.

As Leicester aim to restrict Southampton at Wembley and reach the FA Cup final, that added defensive solidarity is surely going to come in mightily handy.

Therefore, it seems an obvious choice for Rodgers to recall Soyuncu into the Leicester starting line-up for Sunday’s clash.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has given the thumbs up to his old side bringing in a new striker this summer.

This season, Ollie Watkins has been the first-choice No.9 at the Midlands club and has led the line well, with the 25-year-old managing to get his name on the scoresheet last time out against Fulham – his 11th league goal.

Nevertheless, Villa could still move for a centre-forward in the next transfer window. According to The Telegraph, there is a desire at Villa Park to provide Watkins with some serious competition for the 2021/22 campaign.

It remains to be seen who the Premier League outfit end up bidding for, but the decision to target a striker in the first place is the right move for Hendrie.

On the rumours that Villa are likely to buy a new No.9 this summer, the retired midfielder told FFC:

“I think sometimes when you’re in a position where you haven’t really got to look over your shoulder and see who’s coming in, if you’re having a bad game or you’re not scoring goals [it can be a problem].

“I think that [competition] is healthy in a football club. I really do because it gets people on their toes, it gets reactions out of players. If you’re not playing well, you know the next man is coming in, so it keeps everyone on their toes and that’s important, it’s really important.

“Ollie Watkins has had a free season if you like, you know, there’s been injuries to Wesley, who’s struggling to get back to full fitness.”

Após a vitória por 2 a 0 em cima do Cruzeiro pela Copa do Brasil, na última quarta-feira, o Grêmio volta a campo neste sábado, às 19h30, contra o Figueirense, às 19h30, pela 33° rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, no Orlando Scarpelli.

Com a proximidade da vaga na grande decisão da Copa do Brasil, Renato Gaúcho optou por mandar os reservas para o jogo. A única exceção é o goleiro Marcelo Grohe.

Apesar de entrar com os reservas, o Tricolor não se “desligou” do Brasileirão. O Grêmio está em 8°, com 48 pontos, apenas um a menos que o Corinthians, último time do G6. Quem garantiu isto foi o lateral-esquerdo Marcelo Oliveira, um dos que serão poupados pelo comandante.

– Nós sabemos que a Copa do Brasil é o caminho mais curto para o objetivo de conquistar. A partir do momento que estamos jogando o Brasileiro, não vamos deixar de lutar nenhum momento. Rangers have been linked with Vitesse centre-back Danilho Doekhi recently and he could prove to be Steven Gerrard’s own version of Virgil van Dijk at Ibrox should he join this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Rangers, Newcastle United and Fulham are all in the race to sign the 22-year-old defender, who has been a big part of Vitesse’s impressive campaign in the Eredivisie so far this season.

It has been previously reported that the defender would be available for just £1.5m this summer, as his contract with the Dutch side is set to expire at the end of next season, so he could prove to be a bargain signing for the Light Blues this summer if they can convince him to make the move to Ibrox.

Rangers’ own VVD?

When Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic signed Van Dijk from FC Groningen in 2013, he was just 21-years-old and like Doekhi, was a prominent part of the Netherlands’ U21 squad.

The towering centre-back cost the Hoops just £2.6m, and has, of course, gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in world football after impressive spells with Southampton and Liverpool, finishing second in the 2019 Ballon d’Or voting after helping Liverpool win the Champions League.

Doekhi, who is a former Ajax youngster, has already made 90 appearances for Vitesse and has been impressive so far this season, averaging a solid 6.92 rating for his performances in the Dutch top-flight.

In 30 league games this season, Thomas Letsch’s side have conceded just 28 goals, which certainly suggests that Doekhi could help Gerrard’s side improve on their incredible defensive record this season.

The 22-year-old centre-back certainly looks set for a big future in the game and there is no reason why his career can’t follow a similar trajectory to Van Dijk’s should he make the switch to Ibrox this summer.

Therefore, considering his talent and his reported asking price, sporting director Ross Wilson must do everything he can to sign him for Gerrard’s side this summer, as he could prove to be a superb addition.

Ralph Hasenhuttl appears to have been handed a golden opportunity to get rid of Southampton flop Mario Lemina this summer, with West Ham and Newcastle United both reportedly interested in signing him ahead of next season.

According to The Guardian, both Premier League clubs are keen on the Gabon international this summer, which could finally see him depart St Mary’s on a permanent deal.

The 27-year-old has spent this season on loan at Fulham, and whilst Scott Parker’s side hold an option to buy him ahead of next season, they face a serious struggle to stay in the Premier League and may be dissuaded from signing him should they be relegated back to the Championship.

Therefore, Southampton chairman Jisheng Gao will undoubtedly be relieved that Premier League clubs are beginning to show an interest in signing him, as he surely won’t want to keep Lemina on the books at St Mary’s for another two seasons.

Since signing for a then club-record fee from Juventus in 2017, the midfielder has managed just 52 appearances for Southampton, in which he has contributed a paltry two goals and two assists.

At the time of his signing, former vice-chairman Les Reed described him as an “outstanding” talent, but unfortunately he has never really demonstrated that ability on the south coast.

After spending last season on loan with Galatasaray, he was shipped out to Craven Cottage ahead of the current campaign and has gone on to make 27 appearances for Fulham, with one goal and one assist to his name.

His performances have earned him a disappointing 6.59 average match rating from WhoScored, so it is something of a surprise that both West Ham and Newcastle are showing an interest in him, which suggests that this is an ideal opportunity for Southampton to sell him before his value decreases even further.

Therefore, Hasenhuttl and Martin Semmens should both ensure that the 27-year-old leaves the club on a permanent deal this summer, as otherwise they risk losing him for nothing when his Saints contract expires at the end of next season.
