Man United could live to regret their decision to sign Edinson Cavani

Manchester United may live to regret their decision to sign Edinson Cavani on deadline day.

What’s the word?

According to The Manchester Evening News, Cavani will miss Man United’s game against Newcastle United after the international break as he will still be self-isolating.

Although the 116-cap Uruguay international could be available to play against Paris Saint-Germain in Paris, this cannot be guaranteed given the current circumstances.

Moreover, the 33-year-old may not be deemed fit enough to feature against his former club, as he has been unable to train with his new teammates in accordance with the coronavirus protocols.

This will be a big blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who will be without his first choice striker Anthony Martial at St James’ Park, as he starts serving a three-match ban for the red card he received during the humiliating defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Panic buy?

Plenty of players in the past have arrived at Old Trafford with a big reputation but failed to adapt to the Premier League.

Only time will tell if he is another Radamel Falcao or a Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Regardless, the Red Devils have been readily criticised for seemingly rushing headlong into a late summer swoop for the ex-PSG striker, with talkSPORT transfer expert Alex Crook condemning the deal as a “little bit of a panic buy.”

While Cavani, rated at £18m by Transfermarkt, was once considered to be one of the best players in Europe, his reputation has somewhat declined in recent years, especially considering he hasn’t kicked a ball in seven months.

Last season, he started seven games in Ligue 1 with as many appearances from the bench, scoring four goals and supplying one assist, whilst averaging 2 shots, a mere 0.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Although these numbers are hardly appalling, the statistics don’t exactly paint the full picture.

Indeed, Solskjaer spent the better part of last season insisting he is investing in youth players; giving academy graduates like Mason Greenwood a chance to test themselves on a regular basis whilst trying to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

With the benefit of hindsight, something about his statement doesn’t quite ring true, when you consider the fact that Cavani will earn the same amount as Marcus Rashford – even though he hasn’t played since March and last scored in February.

Furthermore, the Uruguayan left the Parc de Princes amid a public spat with Neymar, which perhaps indicates that he isn’t the best at coping with flamboyant personalities. It will be interesting to see how he deals with Paul Pogba in the dressing room, that’s for sure.

History has a habit of repeating itself. You can’t help but wonder why United decided to splash the cash on an ageing striker when they had invested so heavily in Alex Telles and Donny van de Beek.

Manchester United’s Phil Jones demands justify West Ham walking away

Manchester United’s incredible demands for outcast defender Phil Jones to leave Old Trafford in January further highlights why a move to West Ham this summer would have been the wrong decision by David Moyes.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, Manchester United are demanding £20million to sell Jones in the upcoming January market after boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to omit the former England international from his 25-man Premier League squad.

The 28-year-old has not featured for the Red Devils in any competition this term and only managed to earn two Premier League appearances last season, the last of which came in January while scarcely being named in any of Solskjaer’s matchday squads.

A number of top-flight sides are said to have shown interest in potential deals to lure Jones away from Old Trafford in the past, but no move was ever secured for the £100,000-per-week centre-half who only penned new terms in February 2019 running to 2023.

Jones is also noted to love being at United, though would consider leaving the Red Devils to play regular first-team football again in the hopes of earning a recall to the England squad two years after his 27th and final cap.

Information collected by TodoFichajes suggests West Ham would be the main candidate to sign Jones, having held interest in the summer and feeling his exclusion from Solskjaer’s squad could aid efforts to finalise an agreement.

Wise to walk away

While reports are identifying West Ham as the main candidate to sign Jones, the east London outfit were right to walk away from negotiations in the summer when Moyes was first alleged to be keen on securing a reunion.

The Mirror noted back in March that Moyes was considering rivalling Newcastle United for Jones’ signature, which was thought to be available for £12m at the time.

Even at the lower figure, Football Insider cited three reasons why a deal would not occur even though Jones was seen to fit the profile Moyes was after, as the Irons boss questioned whether the 28-year-old had the desire to reignite his wavering career, refused to match his Red Devils salary, and was seen to be on the decline rather than on the up.

Claims that United will now demand £20m for Jones adds a fourth reason as to why West Ham were wise to walk away, while the defender’s comments from 2015 also add a fifth.

Following a 2-1 defeat to Norwich City that marked a third loss in a row for Louis van Gaal’s side, Jones noted that the mood in the Old Trafford dressing room was still not as bad as it once was during Moyes’ tenure.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the lowest moment,” said Jones, via quotes by BBC Sport. “I think it became pretty glum under David Moyes.”

Jones’ comments ought to have raised fierce concerns in the West Ham hierarchy this summer that a deal to bring the defender to the London Stadium would have been inane, but not as absurd as striking a deal in January despite the mounting reasons against a move.

AND in other news, West Ham won’t be missing a £22.5m-rated man after his summer transfer after a forlorn debut with his new side.

Cyrus Christie showed Fulham exactly what they’re missing against Blackburn

Fulham fans may want to have one eye on how Nottingham Forest are getting on for the rest of the season.

The Reds have two Fulham loanees at the club in the shape of Cyrus Christie and Anthony Knockaert, while one of last season’s promotion heroes, Harry Arter, is also at the club.

The East Midlands outfit picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, and it was a Fulham loanee that shined on the day.

Christie won WhoScored’s star man award for his fantastic performance at right-back, and his showing was so impressive that we’re wondering if Tony Khan made the wrong decision in loaning him out and keeping Dennis Odoi.

The full-back was brilliant at both ends of the pitch, playing three key passes while having an unbelievable defensive stat sheet, which includes two tackles, two interceptions and four clearances.

Meanwhile, Odoi has been faltering in the top-flight averaging 0.3 key passes per game and just one tackle, all in all, contributing to an average WhoScored rating of just 6.13.

Of course, we take into account the fact that Odoi is more versatile than Christie, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the Irish international has played as a centre-back before, and if Scott Parker does eventually make the permanent switch to five at the back, he could have been a good option as a right-sided centre-half, and his performance against Blackburn highlighted that.

We’re not suggesting that Christie is the answer to all of Fulham’s defensive woes, he proved that he isn’t all that during the Whites’ last Premier League campaign, but it’s hard to imagine that he wouldn’t have been a better squad player than Odoi, who has had a nightmare start to the 2020/21 season.

If Christie’s good form continues for Forest we may well see him back in Fulham’s first-team next season.

Crystal Palace must secure deal for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence

Whisper it quietly, but Crystal Palace have an underlying problem at right-back that seems to be getting worse and worse.

What’s the word?

According to an exclusive from TEAMtalk, Roy Hodgson is interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence when the transfer market re-opens in January.

But it’s claimed that Hodgson’s side will face stiff competition from Everton, Newcastle United and Wolves, who are closely monitoring the situation. So, Palace chairman Steve Parish must secure a deal for the defender at all costs.

Time to strike!

Spence, 20, burst onto the scenes at the Riverside Stadium after he made his first-team debut against Charlton Athletic last term.

In fact, it’s fair to say that the full-back, who can be deployed at the back or on the right wing, has been given a new lease of life under Neil Warnock, as he has made eight appearances in the Championship this season, scoring one goal in the 2-0 win over Coventry City last month, via Transfermarkt.

Once lauded as an “exceptional” player by former Boro manager Jonathan Woodgate, the London-born defender hasn’t looked at all out of touch in the first team. Despite his age, he has started five out of eight fixtures so far, last featuring in the 1-0 victory at home to Nottingham Forest.

Spence, who’s market value is estimated at £1.8m via Transfermarkt, has drawn comparisons with Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and former Crystal Palace man Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who now plies his trade with Manchester United.

It’s perhaps hardly surprising that several Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Brighton were keen to sign the Englishman in the summer, but no move came to fruition.

Palace themselves are in a state of flux at the moment as new summer signing Nathan Ferguson is still injured, whilst Nathaniel Clyne only signed a short-term contract which will run out in January, which has left the club with very little room for manoeuvre.

Joel Ward has been in fine form on the right flank but he cannot be expected to shoulder the burden of responsibilities until such a time when Ferguson is fully fit and firing on all cylinders, whenever the case may be.

Spence could turn out to be a shrewd signing to make as he seems to be a relatively risk-free signing with no previous injury record to speak of.
