Brighton should forget about signing Adam Lallana and instead try to lure Todd Cantwell to the Amex Stadium this summer.

That is according to journalist Joe Donnohue, who argued in a piece for Sussex Live that the Norwich winger would be a far more appetising transfer coup for the Seagulls than the Liverpool midfielder, who was recently been tipped for a move to Graham Potter’s aside (as per Sussex Live).

Donnohue wrote: “Financially, Brighton will be constrained by the implications of the season hiatus and ongoing crisis this summer, but Cantwell is unlikely to cost an exorbitant sum, nor will Norwich be able to demand such a fee.

“He would also make more sense than Adam Lallana, who Albion have also been linked with. Cantwell fits Potter’s project better in terms of age and profile, and his wages would no doubt be less, even taking into account a fee involved.

“It is a transfer which makes sense for both player and club – Cantwell has outgrown Norfolk in one short season in the top flight. Right now, perhaps he needs to bring his nonchalant surfer aesthetic to the south coast.”

Donnohue makes some fair points in his arguments for prioritising Cantwell over Lallana. The Norwich winger is only 22 and therefore still has ample time to develop even further over the next few years. He has also been a rare shining light in a dismal season for the relegated Canaries, scoring seven times for Daniel Farke’s side.

Lallana, meanwhile, is 32 and has played very little football for Liverpool over the last three years, while he may indeed require a significant wage decrease if he moves to Brighton – he reportedly earns £110,000 per week on Merseyside (as per Sussex Live), more than double the £50,000-a-week of the Seagulls’ highest earners Pascal Gross, Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Martin Montoya (as per Spotrac).

However, the ex-England midfielder would be available on a free transfer and could also bring the experience of winning the Premier League and Champions League to the Amex, while he may be open to taking a wage decrease in order to obtain more regular game-time at Brighton.

Also, while Cantwell may have had a good season, his goals have dried up in 2020 – his last league goal came on New Year’s Day, being unable to add to his tally as Norwich’s results deteriorated since the restart last month, culminating in their meek relegation.

The 22-year-old could also come at a cost – he is valued at £18m by TransferMarkt but the Canaries may try to hold out for more than that. Cantwell may not be strictly guaranteed a first team place at the Amex, either, with fellow left winger Leandro Trossard currently in better form (two goals in his last four games) and netting five for the season so far.

If Brighton are able to get both Cantwell and Lallana in this summer, it would represent an excellent double coup. However, the Liverpool man ought not to be completely overlooked in favour of Norwich’s talented yet currently out-of-form winger.

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan insists Wilfried Zaha should move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer after Roy Hodgson revealed he is “so set on leaving” Selhurst Park. 

Zaha, 27, wanted to leave Palace last year, but a move never materialised, amid interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Everton.

A year later, the winger finds himself in a similar situation.

Despite Hodgson’s best efforts, Palace have been unable to match his ambitions, while Zaha has changed agents and made it clear he wants to win trophies.

Palace refused to sell him for anything less than £80m last year, although their valuation is expected to plummet, as clubs are operating in unprecedented circumstances.

Jose Mourinho’s side qualified for the Europa League after drawing with the Eagles on the final day of the Premier League season.

Hodgson suggested speculation has had an impact on his performances this season.

“It’s obviously affected him because his form in the last few weeks has really been quite poor considering what he is capable of doing,” Hodgson said.

“It’s a dilemma for the club and a dilemma for him if he is so set on leaving. If he feels he just does not want to be with us any more, that would be sad.”

“We still like him very much; we can’t make him like us. This is a situation that only he and the club can sort out. I don’t have an answer.”

Zaha, a product of Palace’s academy, left the club to move to Manchester United in 2013, before returning to Selhurst Park in 2014.

The Ivorian, who is known for his dribbling, scored 10 league goals last season, but only managed four goals this term, which is his lowest return since the 2015-16 season.

However, the pundit believes he should join Spurs instead, as he feels Mourinho will be able to get the best out of him.

Speaking to talkSPORT, as per The Daily Star, Jordan admitted “I don’t think Wilfried has covered himself in glory this season. I think he is a tremendous player. “

“Obviously I knew him from a very long time ago – he came out of the academy which I produced – and started his professional career as I was going but he’s an incredible talent.”

“He is on £130,000 a week which in Palace’s terms, is very expensive. And now he wants to go now. He gave them another year, they gave him a longer contract which means they have put themselves in a strong negotiating position.”

“I could see him going to Tottenham. It depends how Mourinho wants to set them up next year and what he wants to do with them.”

“He wants to go. I could see him going to Tottenham. He is in the price category that Daniel [Levy] might be willing to spend.”

It is hard to argue with Jordan on this one, as Zaha is arguably one of the best players in the Premier League on his day.

He is one of the Eagles’ biggest attacking threats, but now wants to spread his wings. Zaha has been an exceptional servant at Selhurst Park, who has stayed far longer than anyone would’ve expected.

Given his age, he desperately needs to step up another level, in order to achieve his full potential.

He finds himself in a similar situation to former Chelsea star Eden Hazard, albeit on a much smaller scale. At the end of his Stamford Bridge career, even Blues fans could see that Hazard deserved so much more than chasing long balls over the top in the Europa League.

While Spurs have plenty of attacking options, the Ivory Coast international would give the side something extra going forward.

Mourinho is not short of wide options, as Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela have all contributed in some way, shape or form so far. Whether or not Levy will be willing to spend a colossal sum on a winger who has struggled for consistency this season is another matter entirely.

أكد طارق مصطفى المدرب العام بالجهاز الفني السابق لمنتخب مصر بقيادة حسام البدري، أنه كان يتوقع قرار الإقالة، مشيرًا إلى سعادته بهذا القرار لما كان يعانيه مما وصفه بحالة التربص.

وأضاف: “كان واضحًا من وجودنا في المنتخب أن نسبة 90% من الناس يتربصون بنا، والظروف تعارضنا منذ أول أيام المعسكر، تعرضنا لظروف وأزمات لا يتحملها أحد، حتى الأزمات الفنية كانت كثيرة جدًا”.

وعن الأداء الفني للمنتخب المصري، قال مصطفى: “فنيًا لم نقدم أداءً جيدًا ولكن لهذا أسباب كثيرة، أفضل تغييرات قمنا بها كانت في مباراة الجابون، هذه المباراة كنا نلعب بـ10 لاعبين وغامرنا في النهاية، مصطفى محمد أتى لنا قبل المباراة بيومين”.

وكشف: “أشكر حسام البدري، في البداية كان هناك اختلاف في وجهات النظر بيني وبينه، لكن علاقتي به رائعة، أعلم دوري بشكل جيد وكنت أنفذ ما يطلبه مني، وأشكر اللجنة الخماسية بقيادة عمرو الجنايني لأن اختياري لم يكن مجاملة لأحد”.

وواصل: “لا أعلم سبب عدم قبول الشارع المصري للجهاز الفني لمنتخب مصر بقيادة البدري، هيكتور كوبر في خلال 5 سنوات كان يؤدي بشكل سيء واستمر، فنيًا كان لدينا أزمات والظروف أجبرتنا على طريقة لعب معينة”.

واستطرد: “أحمد مجاهد رئيس اللجنة الثلاثية كان معنا على الطائرة بعد مباراة الجابون، وكنا نتحدث كجهاز فني خلال الرحلة، ولكن مجاهد كان (مخاصمنا)، وما تردد عن عدم حب حسام البدري ليوسف أوباما لاعب الزمالك غير صحيح على الإطلاق، وكان يتحدث عنه بشكل جيد”.

According to the Daily Mirror (page 54, 12th August), Championship outfit Nottingham Forest may accept the Hammers’ £10m bid for their right-back Matty Cash.

It’s claimed that they want an extra £5m for his services after knocking back a similar offer from Premier League rivals Sheffield United.

But David Moyes’ side aren’t prepared to budge, meaning Forest may have to sell the 23-year-old for a lower fee than expected if they want to cash in on their first-choice defender.

Bye-bye Fredericks

Whether the Irons get their man for £10m or are forced to pay that extra amount remains to be seen, but it does spell bad news for Ryan Fredericks.

The 27-year-old has been wholly underwhelming from an attacking standpoint this season, averaging a mere 0.8 key passes and 0.6 crosses per game, via WhoScored.

In fact, West Ham rank third-worst for attacking the right flank in the Premier League this season with just 35% of their advances coming from Fredericks’ side.

This is where Cash can elevate Moyes’ side onto a new level next term. He’s provided three goals and five assists whilst averaging 1.1 key passes, 1 shot and 0.7 crosses per appearance in the Championship.

The Times’ chief football writer Henry Winter claimed back in November that the Forest man “looks Premier League class” whilst Quest TV pundit Sam Parkin has described his season as “outstanding”.

If the Irons want to progress further under Moyes next season, then a swoop for the attack-minded Cash makes the world of sense – they just need to stump up the cash to land their man.

Chelsea have finally agreed a record-breaking sum for the acquisition of hot German prospect Kai Havertz.

After a long wait, the Blues are just one step away from welcoming the midfielder to Stamford Bridge. Sky Sports have reported that the two clubs have shook on a transfer fee, which will see Chelsea fork out an eye-watering £89million – a new club record.

This will be very welcome news for fans who have been on the edge of their seat, waiting for Havertz to join the West London outfit.

However, it appears that not everything was as simple behind the scenes. According to Marca (via Sport Witness), Chelsea was never the 21-year-old’s first choice. Instead, Havertz had his sights firmly set on a move to Real Madrid, who were forced to withdraw their interest due to the impact of coronavirus.

Indeed, with an £89m price tag, very few clubs would be able to find such a hefty amount of money in the current financial climate. Due to the fact Chelsea endured a two window transfer ban, they were able to splash the cash on making the move happen.

Marca claim that Havertz was firmly holding out for a bid from the La Liga giants and even rejected a move to Bayern Munich in order to give Madrid time to prepare a bid.

The playmaker and his entourage were reportedly unable to wait any longer for the hope that Los Blancos would see a change in their stance. When a move to Spain was firmly off the table, Havertz felt he had no option left but to approach Chelsea and listen to their offer.

Although, this won’t faze Frank Lampard and Co, who are finally close to finalising their deal with Bayer Leverkusen. The midfielder will become Chelsea’s sixth signing of the window and third prolific attacker.

Havertz tallied 12 goals and six assists in 30 league appearances last season, taking his overall Leverkusen total to 36 goals and 25 assists in 118 Bundesliga games played (via Transfermarkt).
