Danny Mills has claimed that West Ham United’s weak link is their centre-back partnership of Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna, as reported by Football Insider.

This comment comes after the Hammers’ 2-0 victory over Manchester United, in which Diop made 6 clearances and 1 interception, while Ogbonna made 2 tackles and 6 clearances, as per WhoScored.

The result meant that the pair had been part of a defensive unit that had kept three Premier League clean sheets in a row, as per Transfermarkt, something West Ham didn’t manage in the entirety of last season.

Despite this, Mills pointed towards the pair when asked about West Ham’s weak link by Football Insider: “Centre-backs, I’m still not hugely convinced by Diop and Ogbonna, they will give you chances from time to time.

“It’s better than it was, when you go player for player against Manchester United, I think they probably just about shave it. Maybe six players to five, it’s quite close, but on paper maybe West Ham’s starting XI is a little bit better than Manchester United.

“That shows how much West Ham have improved but also the fall and demise of Manchester United.”

There have been times when the pair have been troubled out wide, such as when Diop bundled over Daniel James after the Welshman nipped in to steal the ball, but it feels harsh to criticise a defensive pairing who have been integral to three consecutive shutouts.

The first of those came against Norwich City, with Teemu Pukki who had scored in all of his Premier League games up until that point, while the second came despite the team being reduced to 10 men after Arthur Masuaku’s dismissal away against Aston Villa.

In addition, despite conceding five against Manchester City – a game Ogbonna was not involved in – there are now only five teams who have conceded less goals in the league than West Ham this season, as per the official Premier League website.

If the pairing who contributed to that is a weak link, then West Ham are in a very good position at the moment.

وأفادت الشبكة المذكورة أن أدريان يريد العودة إلى ريال بيتيس في فترة الانتقالات الصيفية القادمة.

أدريان بدأ مسيرته المهنية في أكاديمية ريال بيتيس للشباب.

وأشارت إلى أن أدريان يرى أنه سيحصل على فرصة للمشاركة بشكل منتظم مع ريال بيتيس، حال رحيل التشيلي كلاوديو برافو عن النادي في الصيف القادم.

انضم برافو، البالغ من العمر الآن 37 عامًا، إلى بيتيس في صفقة انتقال مجانية في عام 2020، لكنه لم يلعب سوى 11 مرة هذا الموسم بسبب سلسلة من الإصابات.

ولا ينوي ريال بيتيس التعاقد مع أدريان إلا في حال رحيل كلاوديو برافو، وهي خطوة متوقعة في الميركاتو الصيفي.

Things have gone pretty well for Nottingham Forest so far this season.

On Friday evening, their win over Stoke City saw them take a temporary stand at the top of the Championship table having only lost one game this season, and that came on the opening weekend.

But some tough tests lay ahead due to the injuries picked up throughout September.

In that Stoke game, captain Michael Dawson was withdrawn early, meaning he is set to be out for the next couple of matches barring any major update on the medical front.

While Carl Jenkinson’s absence has forced Matty Cash back into the right-back role to deputise just like he did before the arrival of the former Arsenal man.

To be fair to the 22-year-old, he’s done a fantastic job there as he has averaged a WhoScored rating of 7.36 in that position and has also picked up a goal and two assists.

But after all, his natural position is in attack. Consequently, he can be lacking defensively sometimes as his 1.1 tackles per game suggests – Jenkinson averaged 1.7 per match when he was fit.

Therefore, it would make sense to utilise the other defenders at Sabri Lamouchi’s disposal, and their academy has produced many a fine player over the years – none more so than the aforementioned skipper along with his defensive partner Joe Worrall.

Alex Mighten and Brennan Johnson have been given a taste of the first-team this season, though, both are attacking players and right now, the cause for concern is in defence.

So maybe it is time to give right-back Jordan Gabriel a go.

Former caretaker boss and academy manager Gary Brazil called the 21-year-old an ‘exceptional talent’ with the official Forest website also describing him as a ‘fast and tricky’ full-back.

He was first brought through the ranks around three years ago, but a serious injury hampered his chance of fully taking that opportunity.

Gabriel was introduced against Arsenal last week with 15 minutes left, and despite being four goals down, the 21-year-old displayed an impressive work ethic which left the team only conceding one more goal.

The youngster also recorded a 100% passing success rate and one tackle, per WhoScored.

Back in 2016, then U21 coach Jimmy Gilligan praised Gabriel, he said: “He has a great physique for a full back and is a very receptive learner. He has all the attributes to do well.”

Lamouchi has hinted that he may need to call upon the academy in light of this week due to the lack of options at his disposal.

With so many injuries to defenders, the electric right-back could well be one of those in line for an opportunity.

Speaking to episode seven of the Training Ground Guru Podcast, Victor Orta gave an in-depth assessment of the club and Marcelo Bielsa, detailing specifically the advantage the young players have at the club.

What’s he said?

Leeds may be sitting in fifth place in the Championship after their defeat to Millwall but there are still reasons to be positive, particularly as they’re playing such good football.

One negative, however, is the current injuries. Liam Cooper is out for six weeks while Jamie Shackleton is also set to miss a month.

That being said, chances could be on the horizon for a few more younger players. Leif Davis, Robbie Gotts and Jack Clarke were on the bench last weekend while Pascal Struijk and Olly Casey were spoken about by Bielsa recently too.

It’s no secret that the Argentine likes to give opportunities to the young players but that’s only been magnified by Orta, who suggested they help him with his ideas. He said:

“He talks with facts. Jack Clarke, Leif Davis. He talks always in his career – I remember in Bilbao that changed lives. He talks with facts. He likes the young players because what he finds in them is amazing for his ideas.”

Promising future

As of last January, Bielsa had handed ten opportunities to players under the age of 21. That’s a glowing indication of his attention to youth but so is the fact he’s given first-team debuts to Alfie McCalmont and Mateusz Bogusz since then as well.

Bielsa has helped change the face of the football club and that’s ringing true at academy level too where he’s installed one of his assistant’s Carlos Corberan as the U23s manager.

The fact that the 64-year-old finds the young players amazing for instilling his own ideas is something that simply has to be relayed to those coming through at Thorp Arch.

If Jack Clarke is worried about his game time then he needs to bear in mind Bielsa was the one that gave him his chance in the first place. The same goes for someone like Davis who has also been handed chances sparingly in 2019/20.

But for those who haven’t earned debuts, this should be seen as an opportunity too, not least for the aforementioned Struijk and Casey who could well pounce on the uncertainty surrounding the defence.

Bielsa appears straight up with the young players and Orta’s words should serve as big motivation. They must be on red alert with opportunities there to be had.

وأردف: “لقد منحت الراحة لكثير من اللاعبين في عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، ولكن الأمر استغرق منا وقتًا طويلاً للانطلاق، لن أذهب لتقديم الأعذار للاعبي فريقي لأنني أطالبهم بالكثير”.

Some Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to question why Gini Wijnaldum isn’t as effective going forward for them as he is for the Netherlands.

The former Newcastle man – who cost Liverpool £25m in 2016 – does tend to score more goals for his country than his club, having now netted four goals in his last four international outings.

In stark contrast, Wijnaldum scored just three Premier League goals in total throughout the entirety of last season.

The first of his two goals against Belarus on Sunday was a powerful header reminiscent of his effort against Barcelona last term, whereas his second strike was a real wonder-strike, nestling in the top-right corner from miles out.

As told by Football Insider, Everton attacker Bernard is fearful he may be frozen out of the team if Marco Silva departs and David Moyes takes his spot.

What’s the word?

Bernard was signed by Silva on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer and joined the club on a four-year deal after winning three league titles in five years in Ukraine.

The Brazilian is reportedly worried that should Moyes make a sensational return to Goodison Park, he will be pushed out the team. Bernard fears the Scot’s tough-tackling and defensive approach as a manager would subsequently mean a lack of game time under a Moyes rule.

The 54-year-old, who spent 11 years on Merseyside before moving to Manchester United, was reported by The Mirror to be interested in a return to the club should Silva face the axe.

During his tenure at Everton, the Blues were renowned for their aggressive nature and during his final year at the club, Moyes boasted the fourth-best defensive league record, conceding three fewer than champions Manchester United.

A right to be fearful

Bernard was signed for The Toffees because of his speed and ability up top, rather than his ability in defence, as his 5 foot 5 stature is hardly a concern for opposing players.

During his time in Ukraine, the 27-year-old registered 28 goals and 35 assists in 128 appearances and has bagged three goals and four assists so far for the Blues.

In Moyes’ final few seasons on Merseyside, the former Sunderland boss put faith in the likes of Steven Pienaar, Marouane Fellaini, and Nikica Jelavic, players who are known and put in the team for the tenacious, aggressive nature.

The likes of Fellaini would be a thorn in almost any side with his physical abilities, and attackers like Victor Anichebe would be a worry for almost any defender with his strength and stature up top. Unfortunately, despite his blistering pace, these are all attributes that Bernard lacks.

From a defensive standpoint, the South American has actually made 1.3 tackles per game this season. However, at the same time, he has averaged a foul per match and just 0.2 interceptions.

Regardless of his creativity, should Moyes retake the helm, the forward should be very fearful of being frozen out of the side and he may need to add this to his game for future managers to look at.
