Celtic moved to within two points of Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a dramatic 3-2 win over Motherwell at Parkhead on Sunday.

The Hoops needed a stoppage-time winner from Daizen Maeda, who bundled in a cross from Michel-Ange Balikwisha, to claim all three points in front of their own fans.

In fact, they had to come from 2-1 down to claim a win in the second half. Benjamin Nygren equalised after snatching the ball inside the Motherwell box, before Maeda’s winner.

They had to produce a stunning comeback, in part, because Marcelo Saracchi conceded a penalty that allowed the away side to take the lead.

The Uruguay international was brought into the side in place of Kieran Tierney to provide the Scottish full-back with a rest, but failed to put in a solid performance.

That came after he gave Tawanda Maswanhise too much time to put a cross in for Motherwell’s first goal in the first half, standing too far off the winger out wide.

Despite those errors for the goals, which should see him dropped from the XI, Luke McCowan was even worse than the Boca Juniors loanee in the middle of the park.

Why Luke McCowan should be dropped

Brendan Rodgers should ruthlessly ditch the Scottish central midfielder from the team after the international break because of his disappointing performance against Motherwell.

The left-footed star was put in the midfield to provide a spark and creativity in possession for the Hoops, yet he played 60 minutes without registering a shot on goal or a chance created, per Sofascore.

This shows that the former Dundee star was completely ineffective in possession for the Scottish giants, because he did not provide any sort of threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals.

The 27-year-old central midfielder’s general play throughout the match was not much better, unfortunately, as he was even worse than Saracchi with his all-round performance in and out of possession.

As you can see in the table above, Saracchi won more duels, made more defensive contributions, and completed more dribbles during a similar amount of time on the pitch.

McCowan was far too wasteful with the ball at his feet, losing possession 13 times, when you consider that he did not create a single chance for his teammates in an hour for Celtic.

It was a big chance for the central midfielder to impress, given that Rodgers now has two weeks to reflect on this performance, ahead of the next block of matches.

Unfortunately, the experienced star failed to grasp his opportunity to nail down a place in the starting XI, as he did not do enough in or out of possession to suggest that he should retain a starting berth.

After arriving from Club Brugge at the end of the summer transfer window, Lammens’ introduction to the Man United starting XI has been gradual, with the Belgian making his first start in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland prior to the international break.

Having kept a clean sheet in his opening game, the 23-year-old is off to a solid start, making two saves from inside the box to keep Sunderland at bay, which resulted in a 7.8 SofaScore match rating, the highest of any player.

The Stretford End were clearly left impressed by their new goalkeeper’s performance, chating ‘Are you Schmeichel in disguise’, but it is still very early days, with a difficult trip to Anfield to come on Sunday.

Bailey said: “United are doing their due diligence on goalkeepers, even if [Senne] Lammens comes in and does well, they still want and need another, as [Andre] Onana and [Altay] Bayindir won’t be hanging around in the long-term.

“They are well-versed on options, but I am told that Atubolu is one who has impressed United’s scouts this season. He is emerging as one of the very best in the Bundesliga, and Freiburg are expecting to sell in 2026.”

Record-breaking Atubolo could be instant Lammens upgrade

Lammens is off to a fantastic start at Old Trafford, but there are signs the Freiburg shot-stopper could be an instant upgrade, having already proven himself at a higher level than the former Club Brugge man.

In the 2024-25 season, the 23-year-old broke a Freiburg club record by going 576 minutes without conceding a goal, and he has since gone on to break a Bundesliga record by saving five penalties on the spin.

Not only has the German goalkeeper established himself as a top Bundesliga goalkeeper, but he is also better with his feet than Lammens, placing in the top 1% for touches per 90 over the past year.

Freiburg manager Julian Schuster has praised Atubolu in the past too, saying: “He has good reflexes. He makes good saves and is also good with his feet. We’re very happy to have him.”

It is always difficult to keep two goalkeepers happy, so it would be a risk to sign the Freiburg star, but there are clear signs he could challenge Lammens for a starting spot.

A inesquecível campanha vitoriosa do Santos no Brasileirão de 2004, conquista marcada pelos vários episódios superados pela equipe santista desde o início do campeonato, como os erros de arbitragem, que se somaram no decorrer da competição, a punição rigorosa do STJD (Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva), que obrigou o Peixe jogar longe da Vila Belmiro durante parte do campeonato. A primeira edição do Campeonato Brasileiro, conhecido como Taça Brasil, ocorreu em 1959. No entanto, o Santos só conseguiu o primeiro título dois anos depois. Em 1961, o Peixe entrou como campeão paulista de 1960 e se juntou a outros 17 campeões estaduais. Disputada em três fases, todas eliminatórias, o Santos encarou o Bahia na final, e após empate por 1 a 1 no primeiro jogo, fez 5 a 1 na partida decisiva e ficou com o primeiro título nacional.

No primeiro jogo da decisão, o Santos tinha vencido, no Pacaembu, por 4 a 3. Depois perdera no Maracanã por 3 a 1, no domingo, diante de 102.260 torcedores que estabeleceram o recorde de arrecadação no Brasil, com mais de Cr$ 37 milhões, e naquela terça-feira à noite, apenas dois dias depois da derrota, tinha de reunir os cacos para a partida desempate. No dia 02/04/1963, a imprensa dava o amplo favoritismo ao Botafogo, mas ficou boquiaberta ao presenciar um fantástico 5 a 0 para a equipe do Rei e de seus súditos, naquele que, na época, foi denominado como o “Maior jogo do Mundo”, vitória de Pelé e companhia, e vaga garantida para a Libertadores de 1963.

Nesta quinta edição da Taça Brasil, o Peixe foi campeão invicto. Nos quatro jogos que disputou, não deu a mínima chance para os rivais, e sagrou-se campeão pela terceira vez consecutiva, após vencer os dois jogos da final contra o Bahia, repetindo as finais de 1959 e 1961. Dividido em Zona Norte (Taça Norte) e Zona Sul, esta edição contou com a participação de vinte campeões estaduais, sendo que os campeões dos estados de São Paulo e da Guanabara já entravam na fase final. O Peixe então tirou o Grêmio na semifinal, e derrotou o Bahia na decisão com duas vitórias, por 6 a 0 e 2 a 0.

Esta edição da Taça Brasil, contou com a participação de vinte e dois clubes, e como nas edições anteriores, os campeões dos estados de São Paulo e do Rio de Janeiro já entravam na fase final. Dividido em Norte e Sul, o Santos participou de seis jogos e venceu cinco deles. Foi uma campanha incrível, para sacramentar mais uma taça nessa época dourada da equipe paulista.

Nesta edição da Taça Brasil, contou com a participação de 22 clubes, quase todos campeões estaduais. O único vice que entrou, foi o Palmeiras, visto que o Paulistão havia sido conquistado pelo Santos, que já tinha sua vaga garantida no nacional. Vitória, Campeão do Norte-Nordeste e Grêmio, Campeão do Centro-Sul, se uniram a Fortaleza e Palmeiras para a disputa de um mata-mata, onde os vencedores iriam encarar Santos e Vasco, que já estavam classificados diretamente à semifinal. O Santos então eliminou o rival Palmeiras na semifinal e na decisão, foram duas vitórias diante do Vasco, sendo uma delas por 5 a 1.

Com a mudança de nome, antes Taça Brasil, agora Taça de Prata, ou Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, esta foi a 11ª edição do Campeonato Brasileiro. Com um formato diferente, 17 equipes participaram, dividas em dois grupos, um com 7 e outro com oito times. Na primeira fase os participantes jogaram todos contra todos, em turno único. Classificaram-se os dois primeiros de cada grupo para a fase final, onde os quatro clubes classificados jogaram todos contra todos, em turno único. O clube com maior número de pontos nesta fase foi o campeão. Neste caso foi o Santos, que ficou com a liderança do quadrangular que ainda tinha Internacional, Vasco e Palmeiras.

Após longos 34 anos, o Santos conquistou mais um título do Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol. Vale lembrar que esta foi a última edição disputada antes da adoção do sistema de pontos corridos. Na decisão, o alvinegro praiano derrubou o rival Corinthians na grande final, disputada no Estádio do Morumbi. Recheado de jovens jogadores, o Santos classificou-se em oitavo lugar na primeira fase, e enfrentou o São Paulo nas quartas de final, onde venceu as duas partidas (3 a 1 e 2 a 1) e avançou à semifinal para encarar e eliminar o Grêmio. Na decisão, enfrentou o Corinthians e foi campeão com dois triunfos (2 a 0 e 3 a 2) e ainda teve um lance que ficou cravado na história da competição: as pedaladas de Robinho em cima de Rogério.
