Newcastle United’s air of imperiousness dissipated last weekend, with Bournemouth running riot at St. James’ Park and emerging as 4-1 victors.
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up. Anyway, the Magpies had sailed through the festive period and boasted a nine-match winning streak before the Cherries came to town.
It’s all relative. Newcastle have bounded into the top four and also dismantled Arsenal at the Emirates to take a commanding two-goal lead back to Tyneside in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Alexander Isak was nullified by Andoni Iraola’s defence, but it was bound to happen at some point. He’s been utterly breathtaking over the past few months.
The importance of Alexander Isak at Newcastle
When Newcastle paid a club record fee of £63m to bag Isak’s signature, there was a general sense of awe in Tyneside. It was a significant sum, yes, but Isak had the capacity to become one of the finest marksmen in the business.
Newcastle forward Alexander Isak
He might have suffered injury problems across his English career, but Isak has simply got better and better under Howe’s wing and is now regarded as “the best striker in the Premier League” – by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, at least.
Experience over the past few years has fostered in the United fanbase a sense of belonging, a sense of determination among top Premier League and European outfits. The start of the 2024/25 campaign did not reflect the overarching vision, to be sure, but Isak has stepped up over the past few months and scored at an absurd rate.

He’s reminded everyone that he’s one of the deadliest, silkiest and most stylish forwards in the game, endowed with ferocious striking skills but also link-up play and intelligence beyond merely the realm of the goalscorer.
It’s only natural that Europe’s elite outfits should be lining up to secure the Swede’s prized signature, with Arsenal in particular known to have a vested interest.
Newcastle will hope that they can tie Isak down to a bumper new deal at St. James’ Park, but if they fail, sporting director Paul Mitchell is already doing the groundwork to sign a successor.
Newcastle lining up Isak heir
Eddie Howe has assembled one of the Premier League’s standout squads over the past three years, shaping a middling team into one of potential at the summit of the European and domestic game.
Isak’s sale is not something that the Toon want to consider, but if it did occur this year or next, figures as high as £150m have been floated about.
Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle
As such, Newcastle would have the means to go after a first-class replacement, and Viktor Gyokeres is the man at the top of the shopping list.
As per Football Transfers, United have actually held fresh talks for the free-scoring Sporting Lisbon striker as they continue to sweat over Isak’s future.
Gyokeres, Isak’s teammate with Sweden, has a €100m (about £85m) release clause in his contract but it’s understood that the defending Liga Portugal champions would be willing to negotiate a lower fee at the end of the season.
What Viktor Gyokeres would bring to Newcastle
Callum Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season, but Gyokeres would not agree to a date with Tyneside to play second fiddle to Isak.
And indeed, why would he? The 26-year-old has been in devastating form since joining Sporting Lisbon in 2023, leaving Coventry City for £17m.
Last year, Reporter Harry de Cosemo called him “one of the most feared forwards in Europe” and it’s clear to see why, with the sharpshooter’s pace, power and potency in front of goal all coming together to put him in some rather lofty conversations.
Sporting won the Portuguese top flight last season and Gyokeres was crucial, posting 43 goals and 15 assists across 50 matches in all competitions. When comparing his Liga Portugal stats to Isak’s (in the Premier League) this season, it’s very easy to see why he is held in such high regard and why Howe wants him leading the line, should Isak depart.

Of course, you’d think that Isak would succeed in raising his level if plying his art in Portugal, an ostensibly inferior league in terms of overall quality, but it still points toward an exciting future for Gyokeres, should he move to Newcastle.
Not just a clinical striker, he’s creative, combative and mobile, bearing all the traits that would be needed to slot right into a dynamic and energetic Newcastle side.
Moreover, he’s proved that he can do it on the biggest stage and against the biggest opponents, notching an incredible hat-trick in November as Ruben Amorim’s ex-side defeated Manchester City in the Champions League.
Hailed as a “powerhouse” of a number nine by data analyst Ben Mattinson, Gyokeres has everything going for him, and while Newcastle would no doubt have to tussle with some big names to sign him up, he might be tempted by his countryman’s success in Howe’s system and look to emulate him.

Birmingham defend 13 from last 10 balls to hand Welsh Fire third consecutive loss
ECB Reporters Network13-Aug-2022
Tom Helm clinched a narrow win for Phoenix at the death•ECB/Getty Images
Brilliant bowling at the death by Kane Richardson and Tom Helm with Welsh Fire needing 13 to win off 10 balls allowed Birmingham Phoenix to snatch a four-run victory from the jaws of defeat at Sophia Gardens.Having only reached 130 in their 100 balls it seemed set up for Fire to notch their first win of the summer in front of a 10,901 crowd. David Miller, with 35 off 30, almost got the Welsh team over the line, but the final push wasn’t good enough.Phoenix now have two wins from three games and look set to challenge to go one better than last year. Aussie quick Richardson was named as the Hero of the Match as he took 2 for 15 in his 20 balls, including 11 dot balls.Fire skipper Josh Cobb was delighted to have won the toss and put the Phoenix into bat. Three days earlier, last season’s runners-up had notched 176 in a revenge win over the reigning champions Southern Brave, with 20-year-old opener Will Smeed hitting the Hundred’s first century.Thoughts of a repeat may have been on his mind, but David Payne had other ideas and sent him back after a mere four balls without scoring. The home pace attack kept a tight rein on the Phoenix batters and they limped to 50 off 50 balls, having lost four wickets.Moeen Ali and Chirs Benjamin steadied the ship with a stand of 22 for the second wicket before two wickets fell in a superb set of five from George Scrimshaw. Moeen was caught behind after striking a boundary and three balls later Liam Livingstone gave his much-prized wicket away trying to ramp the home paceman. That made it 27 for 3 at the end of the powerplay, Phoenix’s lowest in the format.Cobb then threw himself into the attack and managed to tighten the noose. Chris Benjamin was caught on the boundary by Dwaine Pretorius, although claimed the maximum as the South African fell over the boundary, but Cobb bowled him next ball.Phoenix were 37 for 4 after 40 and in need of a partnership. It came from Aussie star Matthew Wade and Miles Hammond, who put on 52 for the fifth wicket. Wade hit Scrimshaw, Pretorius and Adam Zampa for sixes, but then fell to Zampa as he went for a repeat. He scored 38 as the Phoenix slumped to 94 for 6 with 22 balls to go.They reached 130 for 7 in the end, Helm pulling the last ball for what was to prove an invaluable six.Fire, having lost their opening two games, desperately needed to hold their nerve in a moderate run chase. Their two totals this season in those defeats were only 119 and 107.Phoenix didn’t concede a run in the first set of five balls from Richardson and he also removed Joe Clarke. Sam Hain wasn’t going to hang around, ramping a six to get off the mark. He eventually chopped on to a slower ball from Helm having scored 23 off 15 balls to leave Fire 28 for 2.Tom Banton finished off the powerplay with a four and a six to take the home side to 34, but when Ben Duckett was bowled by Ben Howell, Fire were 53 for 3. They reached the 50-ball mark with 59, nine runs ahead of the Phoenix total, and it was anyone’s game.Banton and Miller put on 32 for the fourth wicket, including 11 runs from Imran Tahir’s only set of five. Successive sixes – 90 and then 96 metres – from Miller off Livingstone put Fire back in the driving seat, but Richardson conceded just two from the penultimate set and Helm defended 11 from the last to leave home supporters crestfallen.
Having rediscovered his mojo in the Asia Cup with back-to-back fifties, Kohli says “what happens in the change room is the only thing that matters”
Shashank Kishore05-Sep-20222:56
Uthappa: Kohli looked ominous from the first boundary he hit
Virat Kohli let his magical wrists take over, and a 150kph delivery from Mohammad Hasnain went sailing over deep midwicket. It was his half-century – his second in a row – off 36 balls, in the 18th over, and the Indian dressing room was on its feet.Only a week ago, in his 100th T20I, also against Pakistan, Kohli had been scratchy. A thick edge was dropped in the slips second ball he faced, inside-edges rolled past the stumps, lofted hits landed in no-man’s land, top edges flew to the boundary, and attempted drives ended up only being sliced. But this Sunday was different. The fluency was there, and the timing from the get-go was all there.Related

Kohli shreds Dubai's nerves with perfectly imperfect comeback knock
The second delivery he faced, a short one from Shadab Khan in the seventh over of the innings, Kohli picked the length early and rocked back to hammer a pull between wide long-one and deep midwicket. In the 11th, he swivelled – head right over the ball, wrists on top of the bounce – to wallop Hasnain to the square-leg boundary. Naseem Shah wasn’t spared either. His first delivery to Kohli was slapped to the cover-point boundary after the batter made room by moving to leg and going down the pitch.Kohli was in his element. The fall of wickets wasn’t going to alter his tempo, especially since he had come to grips with the surface early. Prior to the match, head coach Rahul Dravid had touched upon the importance of assessing conditions quickly and aiming for above-par scores. It was clear this surface didn’t grip as much and with one boundary at just 62 metres, India had to give themselves the cushion of a big score. But from being ultra-aggressive, Kohli had to slow down in the second half of his innings because of the rush of wickets, which he later said was the difference between getting to 200 and stopping at 181. But he did give a peek into the team’s mindset when he said the loss of wickets in the middle overs in pushing for “20-25 extra” wasn’t a worry, because when it does come off, it will make a difference.”If you’ve seen the way we’ve been playing, it’s given us the results we need, and in our middle overs, the run rate has also improved,” Kohli said of India’s approach. “It’s something I, as a batsman, really took keen notice of, and I knew that is one area we need to keep improving on. We’ve spoken about this that sometimes it won’t come off, the way you want and today, we lost a few wickets in the middle phase which didn’t allow us to go towards the 200 target.”Because after [Deepak] Hooda and me, it was Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar], so the bowlers were to follow. That makes a bit of a difference, but we do possess the skills to analyse the situation and play accordingly as well. But given the situation, if we had a couple of wickets in hand, we could’ve got more runs. We’re not disturbed by losing wickets through the middle overs, because that’s the way we want to play. We want to be able to get those 20-25 extra runs that can eventually make the difference in big games.”Kohli explained that much of his slowdown in the second half was dictated by the batting firepower left. He was forced to delay the big hits, since India were also faced with the danger of running out of recognised batters in the death overs.”Today I was making a conscious effort to strike at a higher pace,” he said. “When we lost wickets, there was communication and our plans changed, where I had to bat till the 18th with Hooda. If there were a couple of batters, I would’ve gone with the same tempo and tried to hit more boundaries or sixes. But again, I ended up being in a situation where I had to go deep.”I thought Haris Rauf bowled a great last over. He nailed those slower balls and yorkers, with that pace when you execute, it’s always difficult to get it away. I’m going to continue – especially batting first – to bat the [same] way, trying to take the game on and stay ahead of the asking rate, understanding the conditions and just bat freely. As long as I am in a good space and confident of my batting, I know I can bat in many ways. It’s just about getting back into the groove and getting confident with how you’re playing and once that happens then the situation dictates how you need to play.”4:13
Kohli on answering his critics: I’ve never paid attention to these things
Having made two half-centuries in a row and a 35 earlier, Kohli is now the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament so far – 154 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 126.22 – behind Mohammad Rizwan. It was inevitable that he’d be asked about his form and silencing critics. Kohli underlined the importance of finding excitement and joy in batting as a big factor.”I’ve never paid attention to these things [external criticism], to be honest,” he said. “I’ve played for 14 years; it doesn’t happen by chance. My job is to work hard on my game, something I’m always keen to do. Keen to improve my game for the team. That’s something I’m going to continue to do so.”Everyone’s doing their job eventually. Our job is to play the game, work hard, give our 120%, and I’ve said it in the past that as long as I am doing that and the team has faith in that, what happens in the change room is the only thing that matters to us and to me as well personally.”People have their opinions and that’s absolutely fine, that doesn’t change my happiness as a person. I’ve taken some time away, put things into perspective, it’s given me the relaxation that this isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of life, I need to enjoy the game. I can’t put myself under so much pressure of expectation that I’m not able to express myself. That is not why I started playing this game. I was able to find that excitement back, when I came here, the environment was very welcoming. The camaraderie with the boys is amazing. The environment within the team is amazing, so I’m absolutely loving playing at the moment all over again and feeling good the way I’m batting.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers picked up a big win near the foot of the Premier League table on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over nearby rivals Aston Villa.
Both Leicester City and Ipswich Town would come up short in their games with demoralising losses, resulting in Vitor Pereira’s Old Gold managing to capitalise, with a two-point cushion now forming between the West Midlands side in 17th spot and the Foxes in 18th.
The Portuguese manager will be well aware of how easy it is to get sucked into a battle against the drop, however, with some late additions now on his mind before the transfer window slams shut.
Wolves in talks for late signing before the deadline
As per Fabrizio Romano via his X account, Wolves are set to be busy ahead of tomorrow’s frantic deadline day, with an initial bid now put in to snap up Dynamo Kyiv ace Volodymyr Brazkho.
Romano further states that Wolves’ bid is in the region of £16.7m, with Brazkho keen on a move to England after setting his native Ukraine alight with some top displays from the middle of the park this season.
With Mario Lemina’s future at Molineux up in the air, landing a top talent centrally right before the close of the window could be exactly what Wolves need.
What Brazkho could offer Wolves
Moreover, Brazkho’s exciting displays for Kyiv this campaign so far could make him an ideal teammate for Matheus Cunha, with Pereira keen on adding in some more quality to his ranks here and there to complement the standout Brazilian.
After all, Cunha’s late goal last time out against Unai Emery’s Villans would clinch the three points, with the ex-Atletico Madrid attacker now up to 11 strikes for the season in the Premier League.
The Kyiv number six possesses a similar eye for goal playing in the Ukrainian Premier League, having amassed three goals from 13 league clashes across 2024/25 to date, on top of also boasting one assist.

Away from offering Wolves an added goal threat, Brazkho will also be targeted as a replacement for Lemina based on his incredible ball recovery numbers, with 10.1 ball recoveries averaged per league game this season.
Lemina, before pushing for a move away, was averaging just 4.3 per league match in contrast, but it remains to be seen whether the new potential Old Gold face could be this forceful making the leap to the English top-flight.
He could take to his new surroundings swimmingly though, with Brazhko praised in the past by football analyst Ben Mattinson for his “exceptional” ball-winning ability, on top of the fact the 23-year-old also has six senior Ukraine caps under his belt.
It is a slightly risky move – considering Brazhko will be somewhat of an unknown entity to the average Wolves fan – but he might well be just what Wolves need to add in some more bodies in the middle of the park and to move away from the likes of Lemina who are unsettled in the West Midlands.

O Flamengo voltou a triunfar no Maracanã.

Vaias a Marinho
E a complexidade é diferente porque temos adversários diferentes. E no treino conhecemos nossos colegas.

When Curtis Campher and George Dockrell linked up in the chase of 177 against Scotland, Ireland were 61 for 4 in 9.3 overs. At the time, ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster gave Ireland a less than 10% chance of victory, but the duo overcame formidable odds to produce a come-from-behind win and keep alive their chances of qualifying for the Super 12 round. At one stage, victory had seemed so unimaginable that when Campher hit the winning runs with one over to spare, there were tears of joy among the few Ireland fans at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. An emotional Campher, who had scored a heroic 72, also seemed on the verge of tears while talking to the broadcaster. While Campher was the undisputed star of the chase with an innings that came at a strike rate of 225, he was abl supported by Dockrell’s unbeaten 27-ball 39. Their partnership of 119 off 57 balls – the highest of the tournament thus far – thwarted Scotland’s effort of 176 for 5 that was achieved after Michael Jones hammered a 55-ball 86, the competition’s highest individual score so far.Ireland’s win opened up Group B, with all four teams in contention to qualify for the Super 12 round.A partnership to remember Paul Stirling and Andy Balbirnie impressed briefly at the start of the chase but both batters fell inside the powerplay. The Scottish spinners then came into play, removing Lorcan Tucker (20) and Harry Tector (14) just as they were on the verge of changing gears. At the drinks break, Ireland had two new batters in Campher and Dockrell and they needed 116 runs off 63 deliveries.Curtis Campher and George Duckell shared a crucial century stand•ICC via Getty Images
The duo paced the chase to perfection, with at least one boundary in every over from the 11th until the finish. The tide began to change in the 13th over when Scotland’s in-form spinner Mark Watt was taken for 18 runs, with Campher slog-sweeping him for six. From there on, Campher maintained the pressure, using the width of the crease to toy with the field. Offspinner Michael Leask was scooped over short fine leg in the 14th over; Brad Wheal was deposited over cow corner for six in the 15th, which yielded 14 runs; and the 16th from Josh Davey cost 17 runs, with both Dockrell and Campher clattering three boundaries in the space of five balls.Campher and Dockrell played only two dot balls between overs 12 and 16. They took the fielders on as the field placement turned more defensive as the partnership blossomed. With four overs to go, Campher and Dockrell brought down the required runs to 36. Pressure firmly on Scotland now, Ireland picked off 23 runs in the next two overs to turn their once-distant dream of victory into a reality. The final touches were applied by Campher, the Player of the Match, with a hat-trick of fours in the penultimate over.Scotland ride on Jones’ 86 After Scotland chose to bat, George Munsey was trapped lbw by a swinging delivery from Mark Adair in the second over. The other opener Michael Jones struggled for fluency, scoring only 11 off his first 15 balls. The No. 3 Matthew Cross, however, looked in sublime touch. Relying on his fast hands, Cross raced to 20 off only 13 balls, and eventually Jones seemed to find his form too. The boost came after the powerplay, when Jones pulled Barry McCarthy for six over the short square-leg boundary. Thereafter, Jones’ range of strokes kept growing even after Cross fell for 28 to CampherHis most productive regions were cover and midwicket. He used his feet against spinners Simi Singh and Dockrell to go inside out for fours to enter the 30s. Jones then dispatched Josh Little for six by spotting a short ball early and rocking back deep in his crease. He reached his maiden T20I fifty off 38 balls with a single through covers in the 14th over. For a moment, it appeared that Jones’ innings would end on 50, but he successfully overturned an lbw decision that was given out originally by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. With five overs to go, Scotland were 122 for 2, and with wickets in hand, a big push was expected. The acceleration began when Jones clubbed Gareth Delany for six and four in the 16th over. Berrington fell for 37 to Campher, trying to start the 17th on a positive note, and Jones survived a dropped chance in the same over when Delany put him down at long leg. After the reprieve, McCarthy offered Jones a high full toss, and the no-ball was pulled for a big six. He then clubbed Little for four down the ground to reach 84, surpassing Sikandar Raza’s 82 as the highest individual score so far in this T20 World Cup. Jones fell on 86 two balls later, when he holed out to long-on after attempting a helicopter-style shot that was a mix between MS Dhoni and Rashid Khan’s methods. When he fell, Scotland were already on 170.They finished on 176 eventually, a winning total on most days after the kind of start Scotland’s bowlers had in the second innings. But it wasn’t enough after Campher’s counterattack, which meant that the first seven matches in the tournament had been won by the team that lost the toss.
