Arsenal now considering January loan deal for £42m ex-Man City player

Arsenal are now eyeing a January loan move for a former Man City player who’s unsettled at his current club and could look to leave before deadline day.

Mikel Arteta hints at potential January signings for Arsenal

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has continuously suggested that a winter arrival or two is possible, but it largely depends on the opportunities available to them.

Arsenal want £113k-per-week Barcelona ace immediately, prepared to make bid

The Gunners have joined Juventus in the race for his signature.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 9, 2025

Despite their major concerns right now, with Arsenal seriously missing the injured Bukayo Saka, who’s expected to be out until March, the club won’t be forced into panic-buying of any kind.

Arteta insists the priority is to get the best out of his current options. However, the Spaniard also says that they’re very much in the market and Arsenal are alert to any potential opportunities to upgrade their squad.

“Let’s see. If there’s an opportunity we will look at it,” said Arteta on New Year’s Day. “Let’s see how we get there. Hopefully, the squad is going to be in a much healthier position than it is right now, but who knows?

“We are prepared if we need to do something, we’re capable of doing something, but then that transfer window is very tricky and difficult to control. The opportunities are very limited, but we’ll be there.”

PSG forward Lee Kang-in could emerge as a transfer target for Arsenal if the Ligue 1 champions are willing to let their Asian star leave on a half-season loan with an option to buy him outright in the summer, but as things stand, Luis Enrique’s side haven’t given an indication that is possible (The Athletic).

Surprisingly, reports in Spain suggest that Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is wanted by Arsenal, and they’re prepared to make a bid, even if their centre-back options aren’t really cause for concern right now.

Another rumour from Spain which will raise eyebrows is Arsenal’s apparently rekindled interest in ex-Aston Villa and Man City midfielder Douglas Luiz, who the club bid multiple times for in 2022 but to no avail.

Arsenal consider January loan deal for Douglas Luiz

Former sporting director Edu Gaspar made three offers for the Brazilian back then – the largest one totalling £25 million – but this wasn’t enough to sway Aston Villa into selling (ESPN).

Since then, Luiz has joined Serie A heavyweights Juventus in a £42 million deal from Villa last summer. The 26-year-old went to Turin in a part-exchange deal which saw both Enzo Barrenchea and Samuel Iling-Junior head the other way, but his time at Juve hasn’t exactly gone according to plan, and he could now return to the Premier League.

As per a Spanish media source, Arsenal are interested in signing Luiz on loan from Juventus in January, even if they already have quality midfield options in his position.

They allegedly join a trio of other top English sides – Fulham, Man United and Tottenham – in the chase, and if reports surrounding Luiz’s potential exit start to heat up further, this could make for a very intriguing transfer saga.

“He’s playing less than we all expected, but we’re talking about a strong player,” said Villa sporting director Monchi said about Luiz to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“There are guys who arrive and impose themselves, others who need time. Patience is needed, but Douglas’ qualities are beyond discussion. He will become important for Juve.

“He’s a playmaker and every ball that comes out of his feet has a meaning: last year he played 90% of the games with us. He was decisive.”

New Zealand 'potentially left a few runs out there' – Guptill on their tense finish at Mahlaide

Emotional Guptill dedicated his Player-of-the-Match honour to his late father

New Zealand piled up 360 for 6 – the second-highest total in ODI cricket at The Village in Malahide – but it appeared lighter once Paul Stirling and Harry Tector hit full-tilt in the chase. After New Zealand ultimately scraped home by one run, Martin Guptill , who had set up the narrow victory with 115 off 126 balls, conceded that they “potentially left a few [runs] out there” and that they could’ve been at the wrong end of a tense finish had Stirling and Tector extended their 179-run third-wicket partnership.”It was always challenging. We potentially left a few out there,” Guptill told New Zealand Cricket. “I think if we had [lost] couple of less wickets at certain wickets, we could have really put the hammer down towards the end but to be able to get 360 and defend it, it was a great effort.Related

Allen: 'I'm still figuring out the pace at which I want to go about my one-day cricket'

“[Ireland’s chase] was impressive. They lost an early wicket and a little partnership and another wicket and obviously, a massive partnership. [For] chasing big totals like that, partnerships are a key and if they [Stirling and Tector] could’ve taken it another five-ten overs longer, that would’ve taken it away from us very quickly.”That New Zealand defended 360 was down to impressive spells from Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner who picked up seven wickets between them. Even Blair Tickner, who often erred short during his previous shifts on tour, eventually dragged the ball away from the hitting arcs of Ireland’s lower order when he began trusting his changes of pace.”I think the boys came back really well,” Guptill said. “It’s pretty tough to defend on a ground like this – small ground, good wicket, fast outfield – and we got two guys in and going. It was tough to shut them down. I thought the guys stuck at it really well. They came out here and played with no fear, which is what you want to do when you’re batting, so it was good. Matt Henry, to take four [4-68] on that wicket, unbelievable effort.”Guptill’s contribution to the victory earned him the Player-of-the-Match award, which he dedicated to his father who died in 2017 after a long battle with cancer. With 18 ODI centuries, the 35-year old opener is getting ever closer to the New Zealand record – 21 – currently held by his great mate Ross Taylor.”A bit of an innings of two halves, really,” Guptill said while assessing his performance. “Out of the blocks pretty quickly, felt really good up until about 75, then I just got myself stuck in a bit of a hole and couldn’t rotate the strike as well as I had been. I just got a little bit frustrated.”New Zealand could afford that little splutter with their lower middle order picking up the slack. Henry Nicholls walloped 79 off 54, Glenn Phillips hit 47 off 30 and Michael Bracewell put the finishing touches in while also taking his tournament tally to 190 off 138 without being dismissed.”[Those contributions were] vital,” Guptill said. “Obviously, Beast [Bracewell] at the end as well; he was striking it nicely. To have those guys pitching in and GP [Phillips] ended up close to fifty…Unlucky, not to get to his first fifty, but he contributed with a fantastic innings to help us get to that 360.”Phillips, though, had a forgettable day in the field, dropping as many as three catches, one of which he parried over the ropes for four, which left Ireland needing five off the last three balls. Such lapses in the field prompted New Zealand into some tense mid-over conferences, which involved Guptill among other senior players.”I didn’t say too much (laughs). It was just to keep sticking at it,” Guptill said. “Obviously, Glenn can do pretty freakish things on the boundary and he made a couple of outstanding efforts there and you know that didn’t quite go to hand, but that’s how cricket goes, isn’t it? You’re not going to catch everything and things like that…ebbs and flows of the game. That’s what makes it so exciting. It was just to keep sticking at it and make sure we keep doing our processes and hopefully, come out on top.”Guptill is not used in Test cricket anymore, so he wasn’t part of the squad who became the format’s first champions last year. His only shot at winning an ICC trophy lies in white-ball cricket and ahead of New Zealand’s European tour, he laid bare his motivation to play the T20 World Cup later this year and the ODI World Cup that follows in 2023. With this innings, he put those words to action.

"Superstar" Wood backup, £135k-p/w PL reject: 5 players Forest should sign

The Premier League table clearly demonstrates Nottingham Forest’s unexpected success in the 2024/25 campaign, and their impressive performances have earned them their current position as they aim to secure a European spot for next season.

The Reds have won over half of their league fixtures so far, making them one of the in-form sides and one of the outside contenders in the Premier League title race.

As well as the Premier League, Forest are also into the fourth round of the FA Cup, and Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping his side can go far in that competition as they look to end their wait for a major trophy, which last arrived in 1990.

Forest have had some luck on their side this season as they are yet to pick up any major injuries or suspensions, but Espirito Santo will know they could bite eventually, and be hoping it doesn’t affect his team’s performances.

Nottingham Forest and 8 other Premier League surprise packages

The Premier League has had plenty of surprise packages over the previous 30 years – here are some of the best.

1 ByRoss Kilvington Nov 5, 2024

As the second half of the campaign gets underway, the Portuguese boss may have his eye on a few arrivals before the transfer window closes, as he will not want his side to fall away after what has been an excellent season so far.

It is unclear how much money the club has in the bank, but with a top-four spot in their sights, adding one or two players before the deadline could help them get over the line.

Here, we have taken a look at five players Forest should be looking to sign in this January transfer window to ensure of success this term.

1 Evan Ferguson Brighton

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

It looks very likely that Evan Ferguson will leave Brighton & Hove Albion before the transfer window slams shut on 3rd February, even if that is only on loan.

There are several Premier League teams interested in signing the Republic of Ireland forward, but the Seagulls are yet to give the go-ahead for a deal to go through.

The Reds currently have Emmanuel Dennis, Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood as their centre-forward options. Wood is obviously their leading man with 14 goals in the Premier League this season, and his place in the team is not going to come under threat for the rest of the campaign.

However, Awoniyi is attracting transfer interest himself, and Forest are possibly open to the pair leaving in this window. Therefore, a replacement will be needed, and Ferguson could be the perfect player to come to the City Ground and support Wood.

The 20-year-old has 13 Premier League goals to his name in over 50 matches, and will be eager to prove himself having only been given limited opportunities under Fabian Hurzeler.

This would be a low-risk signing for Forest, as Ferguson, who has been dubbed a “superstar” by Danny Murphy, would be joining on a loan deal, so the Reds would not be tied to the player or spending a huge amount on his services.

2 Yoane Wissa Brentford

Signing a new attacker could be on Forest’s agenda in this transfer window, as Chris Wood, Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi have all been heavily relied upon this season, leading Espirito Santo to add more depth and quality to that area of the team.

One player the Reds could look to bring in is Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, as Forest may look to “explore” a move for Wissa if Awoniyi leaves the City Ground. The 28-year-old has been in tremendous form for the Bees this season, scoring 11 goals in 19 Premier League games, and that has now put him on Forest’s radar.

Wissa can play anywhere across the frontline, meaning his arrival would not just help out Wood up top, but also the likes of Elanga and Hudson-Odoi.

Wissa is a firm favourite at Brentford and is under contract until 2026, so Forest and Nuno could find it hard to prise him away from a team that is also fighting to finish in a European spot, and the Bees have even rebuffed their initial approach.

3 Douglas Luiz Juventus

Nottingham Forest already have some good options in the middle of the park, but just like other positions, they could look to freshen things up, and Juventus’ Douglas Luiz has already emerged as a player they are interested in signing.

It’s been claimed that Forest have made contact to sign the Brazilian from Juventus in this transfer window, with a loan move being the most likely outcome. Luiz has struggled in Turin since his move from Aston Villa, and given how well he did in the Premier League, he could be an excellent addition for the Reds.

Douglas Luiz’s Premier League record

Appearances

175

Goals

20

Assists

18

The £135k-per-week midfielder was a key player for Villa during his time at the club, scoring 22 goals and recording 24 assists in over 200 games. His eye for a goal while being a more defensively minded player makes him someone who Espirito Santo would love in his midfield.

Ryan Yates and Elliot Anderson have done well in that midfield alongside Nicolas Dominguez, but Luiz’s potential arrival could just add a bit more steel and quality to ensure they finish in the top four.

Danilo has only just returned from the serious injury he picked up on the opening weekend, and Ibrahim Sangare is out injured, so options in that area of the team are quite short at the minute. As Luiz did at Villa Park, he could become a real favourite at the City Ground, especially if he helps the Reds reach the Champions League.

4 Stefanos Tzimas Nurnberg (on loan from PAOK)

Stefanos Tzimas is a player who has really impressed during his loan spell at FC Nurnberg and has now emerged on the radar of several Premier League teams. The 19-year-old has nine goals in 15 games in the German second tier, and even though he has done so well, his club have made it clear they are going to trigger their loan-to-buy clause before selling the player for £25m in the summer.

However, Forest are in need of a new striker, and will be even more so if Dennis or Awoniyi leave this month. Therefore, the Reds should look to get ahead of the rest and make a move for the young striker now instead of waiting until the summer like the rest.

Tzimas is still young and will need time to adapt to the Premier League, but instead of getting a more experienced, older backup to Wood, they could look to get a younger striker who can learn from the New Zealand international and be his ready-made replacement in the long term.

5 Rayan Cherki Lyon

Lyon's Rayan Cherki

Espirito Santo may have his eye on adding more attacking quality to his Nottingham Forest side this month, as he will want to make sure his side can keep up with the race at the top of the league, all while having options should the club suffer any injuries or suspensions.

One player who could be a good purchase for the Reds is Rayan Cherki, who looks set to leave Lyon in this transfer window. The Frenchman has a verbal agreement with the Ligue 1 side that he can leave in this transfer window for €22.5m (£19m).

Cherki’s availability should alert Forest, as he is a player who can again improve their wide options, but he is also someone who can provide competition for Morgan Gibbs-White, as the Englishman is Forest’s only real No 10 in their squad.

Cherki has been a very good performer for Lyon, getting among the goals and assists, and given he is only 21, he would surely be a worthy investment for the Reds as someone who improves their squad immediately.

The attacker could also be a player who could get so much better in a year or two’s time. Cherki has been described as an “outrageous” player, and his price tag means that, for someone of his quality, he is available on the cheap, and he could be a difference-maker in terms of where the Reds finish this season.

SLC: Security issues, 'negative publicity' among reasons Asia Cup was shifted

Situation in the country “not conducive to garner the confidence of stakeholders”, says board secretary Mohan de Silva

Difficulties procuring insurance, as well as logistical and security concerns, were some of the issues raised by sponsors and broadcasters that led to the Asia Cup being shifted from Sri Lanka to the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka Cricket has revealed.”They felt that the situation in Sri Lanka was not conducive to garner the confidence of the stakeholders,” SLC secretary Mohan de Silva said in a media briefing.”Not only the member countries, but a tournament of this magnitude requires other stakeholders, like the broadcasters, sponsors, etc. What they felt was that the negative publicity shown all over the world, with the petrol queues and all that, didn’t help our cause.”That “negative publicity” refers to the economic crisis currently engulfing Sri Lanka, where a combination of high debt and low foreign exchange, compounded by poor fiscal management by the Sri Lankan government, has paved the way for a fuel and food shortage. This resulted in months-long protests calling for the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President. He eventually ceded to these demands last month, after throngs of protestors converged upon Colombo. The appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as his replacement, however, has failed to turn public sentiment.Related

Lanka Premier League 2022 to begin on December 6

In a parallel universe, SL offer a glimpse of normal, happier times

Cricket cannot solve SL's massive problems but it can be a distraction

In SL's hour of crisis, their cricketers have spoken up

When SL came to the cricket to fight for the country's future

It was this tense country state that had made it nigh on impossible for security clearance to be granted for multiple broadcast crews to enter the country.”Sponsors were finding it difficult to get insured, and the security clearance for broadcast crews to enter Sri Lanka was also an issue. The delegates who wanted to come from the other countries also weren’t prepared to come,” explained SLC CEO Ashley de Silva.Further, while hosting bilateral tours against Australia and Pakistan went off without a hitch – even with protests reaching their peak during the second Test against Australia, and protestors a frequent presence outside the Galle stadium – it is understood that the logistics of providing accommodation, security and transport for one foreign team at a time, was a considerably more straightforward task than doing so for the multiple stakeholders involved in a tournament such as the Asia Cup.It didn’t help Sri Lanka’s cause that the Lanka Premier League, which was supposed to begin in the first week of August, was also postponed due to the current situation; it will now be held in November.”The sponsors of the franchises had concerns about coming to Sri Lanka. A sponsorship deal not only entails sponsoring the side, but then the sponsors also need to be able to travel around the country freely. Sponsors come to give prominence to their brands, and they felt that at this time this sort of tournament would not give them the necessary mileage.”That said, despite all these concerns, many of the Asian Cricket Council member nations had largely been on board with Sri Lanka going ahead with hosting the tournament – a sentiment backed up by how late this decision was left – however the key issue none of the boards were able to overlook was the potentially “huge financial losses” had the tournament been cancelled. This was down to the fact that the Asia Cup is a tournament that helps the ACC drum up funds for their development work – funds that are shared among member countries.”This would have been done a long time ago if it was some other country. All the other countries were very supportive of having the tournament here, which is why they kept on delaying a final decision.”But they felt a tournament of this magnitude, looking at the current situation, could not have been played here. They didn’t want to take any chances, because if the tournament got cancelled, all the members would have had to fund ACC for the next two years.”An anti-government protest reached Galle Fort during the second Test against Australia•AFP

There is, though, a silver lining of sorts for SLC, who have retained the tournament’s hosting rights, even though it is now to be held in the UAE. What this means is that SLC will still receive a substantial sum from the ACC, to the tune of roughly $ 6.5 million.Ashley de Silva detailed the expenditure, with the key takeaway being that the UAE will be using revenue from ticket sales to pay for expenses related to the tournament, whereas had Sri Lanka hosted it they would have used $ 2.5 million disbursed as a “hosting fee” to pay for the same and kept ticket sales as profits. Sri Lanka, however, will still receive the “hosting fee,” as well a percentage of ticket sales.”Generally the revenue generated from the broadcast and ground rights goes to the ACC, who at the end of the tournament distributes these funds to the member countries that participate in this tournament. That is between 2-3 million, based on the profit which the tournament generates.”Of the rest of the funds, part of it is given to the host of the tournament. From this we’re supposed to provide the accommodation and conduct the whole tournament in the country. That comes as hosts fee. And the hosts what they normally get is only the ticket money – this is the profit that the host board makes.”So this $ 2.5 million would have gone towards accommodation for the players, officials, and also for logistical expenses related to the tournament. We would have ended up making a maximum of about $200,000-300,000. On top of that we would have also made some revenue from the ticket sales. And then there’s the distribution fund that all the teams would have got.”Now, the UAE will only get the ticket sales, which is what they will use to conduct the entire tournament. We [Sri Lanka] will still get the host fee. In addition to that, the UAE has also promised to give us another $ 1.5 million from the ticket sales.”While this is financially more than what SLC would have been making had Sri Lanka hosted the tournament, the country as a whole will lose out on crucial tourism revenue.”If you look at it, we would have created a lot of awareness about the country and brought in a lot of tourism into the country, if the situation was normal and we held the tournament here. So economically the country also would have benefitted. But nevertheless, the funds we’re generating now will also end up coming into Sri Lanka.”There were also two T20Is against India that had been earmarked, likely after the Asia Cup, which are now off the table. The Asia Cup is set to take place from August 27 to September 11.
