488% profit: Everton hit gold selling ace who’s now scoring less than Beto

In 2016, when Farhad Moshiri assumed majority ownership at Everton, the Iranian businessmen pledged to retain the finest players and spend money on targets finer still.

How’s that gone? The intervening years have been fraught with inconsistency and, recently, genuine concerns about the Premier League ground on which Goodison Park stands.

The Friedkin Group are gearing up to take the steering wheel, having agreed a deal to take Moshiri’s 94% stake in September. Whether this will happen in time for the January transfer window, and whether funds will be made free to spend on first-team arrivals, is anybody’s guess, though Sean Dyche’s squad sorely needs an addition or two.

Goals are an issue once again, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin out of contract next summer, this is heightened. Armando Broja will hopefully be fit soon, however, and Beto is starting to find his feet.

Beto's improvements at Everton

Everton signed Beto from Italian club Udinese for a £26m fee last summer, but he flattered to deceive throughout his maiden campaign in England, scoring just three times across 30 outings during the 2023/24 Premier League season.

This year, he’s only notched one strike across seven top-flight appearances, albeit having yet to start and bagging the all-important equaliser against Fulham to salvage a point.

There’s something to be said of Beto’s physicality and athleticism. Contrary to Calvert-Lewin, the Guinea-Bissau international likes to make darting runs through the lines and latch onto surgical deliveries, something that fits Everton’s new less-frequent-crossing style.

Everton are 12th for crosses in the Premier League this term with 187 made so far. Last season, the Merseysiders finished third in the rankings with 752 made. Calvert-Lewin’s struggles have been illuminated.

In Beto, Everton are starting to find a weapon capable of coming up trumps in the closing stages of the match; after all, he equalised against Southampton one week on from his strike against Fulham, though it was chalked off for a marginal offside.

Beto for Everton.

While there are suggestions that he could be on the move in 2025, Everton will want to keep him at the club until the summer. He adds a dimension. Sometimes it’s best not to sell.

Sometimes, though, cashing in is the right thing. Take Demarai Gray, for example, whose time in Saudi Arabia hasn’t provided the on-field riches that the dynamic forward might have hoped for. He’s scored even less than Beto since leaving.

Why Everton struck gold selling Demarai Gray

Gray played for Everton over two campaigns, and held a prominent position in the team at that. He’s never been the most prolific, but pace and positional flexibility allowed for fluidity in the frontline.

You might say that the 28-year-old played the finest football of his career on Merseyside, garbed in blue. Indeed, Gray scored three goals across his first four Everton appearances in the Premier League, and finished that campaign with a praisable nine goal contributions from 28 starts.

During the Jamaica international’s first season at the Liverpool-based outfit, he instantly proved to inject electricity into the frontal group, ranking among the top 8% of forwards in the Premier League in 2021/22 for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

Such faculties even led journalist Scott Saunders to remark: “Demarai Gray is absolutely electric, fair play.”

Gray’s contribution rate might be at its best with Al-Ettifaq, but he’s performing at a lower level of quality and, moreover, has only actually scored four goals since making the move in August 2023, in a deal worth £8m.

This might not seem like much, but Gray joined the Everton fold for less than £2m, ending a brief and rather unsuccessful stint in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen.

While Everton didn’t collect the heftiest figure for his sale, Transfermarkt record that Gray is currently worth about £7m, so that’s about right. Furthermore, when considering the paltry figure that was forked out for his initial arrival from Leverkusen, it can be revealed that the Blues actually collected a bountiful 488% profit on their low-priced and low-risk venture.

While Goodison Park is struggling to hit a rich vein of attacking form under Dyche’s wing, it’s hard to imagine that Gray would inspire the current crop into action. After all, the likes of Iliman Ndiaye perform a similar role to him – and that Senegal international wears the trappings of a finer player than Everton’s ex.

More to the point, Gray is struggling for playing time in the Saudi Pro League under Steven Gerrard, making just four appearances this term, yet to score and with one lonely assist.

After hitting such middling ground across his first campaign in new territory, four goals and four assists apiece across 25 matches, Everton chiefs must be delighted with the funds collected from his departure.

His total tally of four goals from 29 matches for Al-Ettifaq falls below that of Beto, who has hardly been a goalscoring machine under Dyche’s wing but still presents a haul of seven goals from 46 fixtures, starting only 12 of those.

katia-kouyate-demarai-gray-everton-opinion-premier-league

It’s easy to cast a doleful gaze back to a former forward who once did well in the club’s colours, but Gray displayed a streak toward the end that bespoke his non-committal mindset, and since he’s actually scored less than Beto since moving to the Gulf, it’s hardly a sale that has proved detrimental to Everton.

Maybe his best Premier League football lay ahead, but it’s an assumption that falls flat when looking at his performances for Al-Ettifaq. For such a healthy profit, the Toffees did the right thing.

West Brom’s "incredible" loan star is now worth £14m more since leaving

West Bromwich Albion will be seeking out their first Championship win in three games when Sheffield United come to town this coming weekend.

The Baggies have fallen victim to far too many draws in the second tier so far, with a staggering ten already accumulated in league action, which has come at the cost of only six wins being notched up.

Still, only two defeats have come their way, with Carlos Corberan at least pleased with how defensively resolute his side can be, even when victories aren’t always collected.

West Brom's defenders this season

Amazingly, Watford – who occupy sixth spot in the Championship currently at the expense of the West Midlands outfit – have conceded double the amount the Baggies have leaked, with West Brom only shipping 12 next to the Hornets’ 24.

The latest draw away at Preston North End could have easily ended in a disappointing loss if it wasn’t for the likes of Kyle Bartley and Mason Holgate at the back, with the imposing centre-back duo winning 11 duels between them come full-time to keep the Lilywhites at bay.

Alongside Bartley and Holgate, both Darnell Furlong and Thorgen Heggem have also been reliable presences down the flanks for Corberan and Co this campaign to date, with both players everpresent members of the first team even when results haven’t always been rosy.

Of course, everyone at the club would want more wins to ensure a playoff spot is achieved, but the ex-Huddersfield Town boss will still be proud of his players for continuing to battle to stave off any unwanted losses.

Even though he will be content with the defensive numbers he has at his disposal, Corberan would be very unlikely to reject this former loan star’s presence if he returned in a theoretical world, with the centre-back in question going on to star at the very top after lining up at the Hawthorns briefly.

West Brom's loan star is now shining

It might well be forgotten about now that Tosin Adarabioyo was once a wide-eyed youngster on loan at the Baggies, with the towering 6 foot 5 gem attempting to make a name for himself away from then-parent club Manchester City in 2018.

Adarabioyo would impress in his new surroundings, going on to make 36 appearances for the club in total and picking up two assists along the way, as his loan employers entered into the Championship playoff picture.

Off the back of this formative stint away from the Etihad, the now 27-year-old would eventually go on to prove himself as a Premier League capable performer at Fulham, before a major move to near neighbours Chelsea then took shape.

Adarabioyo would go on to tally up 132 games at Craven Cottage before leaving for Stamford Bridge, which would lead to football journalist Zach Lowy labelling him as “incredible” and his transfer value would rise too far above the measly amount he was worth when once donning a West Brom kit.

This summer, the brand new Chelsea number four was worth in the region of £16.5m – according to Transfermarkt – after once having a low £2.8m value next to his name as a youngster at the Hawthorns, which is a mammoth increase of £13.7m or 489%.

Chelsea wouldn’t even have to fork out a single dime to win their man in the end, having purchased him on a free transfer at the expense of the Cottagers, which looks to be a very wise investment when you consider his promising numbers in Europe for the Blues recently.

He would even score against Noah in mid-November, having also impressed with 97 accurate passes registered, as Chelsea fans long for more from their fresh recruit as 2025 comes into view.

Whilst Adarabioyo continues to knock on the door for more first-team minutes at Stamford Bridge, Corberan’s mind will be on steering his team to more wins in the division below, away from his side being stern at the back.

Kapp does it again as South Africa trump New Zealand to make it four in four

Amelia Kerr’s three-four and Sophie Devine’s 93 go in vain for New Zealand, who go down for the third time in the tournament

A heroic performance by Marizanne Kapp, not for the first time at this World Cup either, made all the difference as South Africa extended their winning streak to four matches. Kapp scored 34* in 35 balls as South Africa made hard work of what should have been a simpler chase and snuck home by two wickets, handing New Zealand their third loss in five matches. It was South Africa’s 13th win chasing in 15 matches (with one no-result and one tie) since the start of 2020, and their first victory over New Zealand in World Cups, and had them drawing level on points with Australia at the top. The result left South Africa one win away from securing a semi-final spot, but New Zealand are in a precarious position and at risk of missing out on the knockouts.Replying to New Zealand’s 228, South Africa were cruising at 161 for 2 in the 36th over. Laura Wolvaardt had racked up her third successive half-century, after being put down on 33; Sune Luus was on her way to a second fifty, and Amelia Kerr, whose first seven overs cost 46 runs, was brought on to bowl.Cue chaos.Laura Wolvaardt scored her third half-century on the bounce•ICC via Getty Images

South Africa lost three wickets for nine runs in 27 balls, including both Wolvaardt and Luus, to leave it to the lower order to finish the chase. South Africa needed 59 runs off 59 balls when Luus was dismissed. Kapp and Chloe Tryon, the same pair that got South Africa out of jail against England, came together to put on 28 runs off 30 balls, but Tryon couldn’t see it through, as she stepped out and hit Frances Mackay to Amelia Kerr at deep midwicket at the start of the 46th over. South Africa needed 31 off 29 balls then. When Trisha Chetty, who was with Kapp in the England game, arrived and swung big but got a leading edge for Mackay to collect a return catch, South Africa needed 18 off 17. And when Shabnim Ismail, who finished the England game with Chetty, was bowled by Sophie Devine in the penultimate over, it was 12 off ten.Ayabonga Khaka, who was not needed to bat in the previous two matches, missed the first ball she faced, and top-edged an attempted hoick the second ball, but it fell safely between mid-off and mid-on to put Kapp back on strike. Kapp smashed Devine over mid-off for four and then pushed her to long-on to ensure she would face in the final over. South Africa needed six runs from six balls then.Sophie Devine missed her second century of the World Cup by just seven runs•AFP via Getty Images

Mackay was tasked with the final over. Off the first ball, Kapp slog-swept her for four. Off the second, she ran a single to long-on, and then met Khaka mid-pitch for a lengthy conversation. With scores level, Khaka went on the back foot to punch Mackay to mid-off for a quick scramble to complete the win as the dressing room erupted in joy.Kapp sank to her haunches in relief. “I’m tired,” she told the television interviewee afterwards. So were New Zealand, after they came back well, but not well enough. In the end, New Zealand didn’t have enough runs to play with after they were kept to 228 on a good Seddon Park pitch. South Africa’s attack found swing early and then took pace off the ball to prompt a lower-order collapse. New Zealand lost six wickets for 30 runs in 46 balls, and failed to bat out their 50 overs.Devine fell seven runs short of a second century at this World Cup and put New Zealand in a position to push for a big score. She shared in an 81-run stand for the second wicket with Amelia Kerr and 80 for the fourth wicket with Maddy Green, but New Zealand could not get away from South Africa’s quicks. Ismail struck at the top and bottom of the innings, Khaka had two catches dropped but still finished with three wickets, while Kapp took two wickets in two balls at the death to cap off a dominant performance from the quicks.

Crystal Palace want to sell £14m man to fund January signings, says insider

Crystal Palace are reportedly ready to offload one of their forwards to fund new additions in the January transfer window.

Crystal Palace transfer news

A win over Ipswich Town and a draw with Manchester City has lifted spirits at Selhurst Park heading into the Christmas period. However, with the club still floating dangerously just above the Premier League’s relegation zone, manager Oliver Glasner will no doubt be looking to reinforce in the January transfer window.

The Eagles have already been linked with a number of players, including Millwall midfielder Romaine Esse and Manchester City’s James McAtee. Fluminense winger Jhon Arias is also understood to be on their radar.

Jhon Arias

Football Insider recently reported that Palace’s scouts are keeping close tabs on the 27-year-old, who hit 15 goals and notched eight assists in 53 games across all competitions last season. The Colombia international, who has been capped 27 times by his country, is known as “Little Engine,” and has been praised by South American football expert Tim Vickery.

“He’s dynamic, he can work all over the field and he’s very, very versatile. For me, he’s probably been the best player in the Fluminense side,” Vickery told talkSPORT of Arias.

Eagles want Edouard gone

To fund any potential transfer business, Palace could look to offload striker Odsonne Edouard in a permanent transfer. That’s according to Football Insider’s Mick Brown, who claims that the Eagles will look to sell the Frenchman in January if his current loan spell at Leicester City is cut short.

Football Insider reported earlier this month that Leicester could terminate their deal for the 26-year-old after the New Year after struggling to make an impactat the King Power Stadium. Edouard has failed fail to find the net in any of his eight appearances for the Foxes, and has been left out of the squad for the club’s last four Premier League matches.

Odsonne-Edouard
Odsonne-Edouard

“I hear Palace would like to move him on permanently [if his loan is cut short],” Brown said. “That would allow them to make some money from his sale which could be invested in the squad.

“But that will depend on whether there are any clubs out there who will be looking to sign him after he’s failed to make an impact for Leicester.

“They’ve been struggling for strikers and he can’t get in there, so you have to wonder what his level is. He’s gone on loan because there’s no place for him in their squad, they’ve already got Mateta and Eddie Nketiah there.”

Palace boss Glasner has also hinted that he doesn’t see Edouard, who joined the club for £14 million from Celtic in 2021, having a future at Selhurst.

“From our side, it makes no sense to bring him back because if he’s not playing at Leicester, then why should he play for Crystal Palace?” the Austrian coach said earlier this month. “If he doesn’t get minutes at Leicester, then maybe he finds another loan. But it’s not the case of him coming back to play.”

KKR and Shreyas Iyer hold the edge in reunion with Delhi Capitals

Rishabh Pant’s men, meanwhile, could use some middle-order batting muscle

Alagappan Muthu09-Apr-20222:14

Should KKR stick with Rahane? Where should Pant bat?

Big pictureSo you’re Delhi Daredevils. No, Capitals. Sorry. And you’re facing Kolkata Knight Riders. Oh dear.Aren’t you a team built on your top two batters and a middle-order firebrand? But you’re going to go up against a team which has wicket takers up front, misers through the middle and whatever Pat Cummins is. Reports suggest he could be the emissary of an alien superspecies sent to distract us with his dreaminess. #Truestory.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

If you are in the USA, you can watch the Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders game live on ESPN+.

Shreyas Iyer once held the keys to the Delhi kingdom. Then it was taken away. And now he’s back, only he’s captain of the other side. Thanks to the hard grind that he went through in domestic cricket with perhaps the most unforgiving team in all the land, he has become one of those people who can read where a game is going before it gets there. There have always been players like that. MS Dhoni for example. But he never had a bowling attack like Knight Riders’. A bowling attack with which a captain like Shreyas can rewrite cricket destiny. The game has always made room for individual brilliance, and in Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, David Warner and Rovman Powell, the Capitals are not short of this precious resource. The question is can one man hold off a set of champions? In the newsPat Cummins’ DNA has been through extensive analysis and in a barely believable twist, it appears he is actually 100% human. You guys, he’s just like us. Except, he bats like Viv Richards, bowls like Michael Holding, and looks like Tom Cruise.Likely XIsKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Venkatesh Iyer, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Sam Billings (wk), 5 Nitish Rana, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Pat Cummins, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Rasikh Salam, 11 Varun ChakravarthyDelhi Capitals: 1 David Warner, 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Sarfaraz Khan, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt & wk), 5 Lalit Yadav, 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Mustafizur RahmanStrategy puntGrudge-match narratives only really work in the movies, still Capitals wouldn’t mind seeing the back of Shreyas quickly and there is a fairly straightforward option available. Since IPL 2021, the Knight Riders captain averages 19.5, strikes at 93 and takes roughly 28 balls between boundaries while facing spin bowling. The only problem is he wallops Kuldeep Yadav (32 off 24 balls, no dismissals) and Axar Patel (24 off 15 balls, one dismissal). So, umm, throw the ball to Lalit Yadav and hope for the best?Stats that matter The average first-innings total at Brabourne stadium in this IPL is 189 for 7. Teams chasing have won three of the four matches played here this season. Thanks to the partnership between mystery spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, Knight Riders have the best middle-overs (7-16) economy rate (5.52) in this IPL. Ajinkya Rahane has the lowest average (14.9) and the second-lowest strike rate (107) among all opening batters in this tournament since 2020 (min. five innings played). But the Capitals would know better than to underestimate him given they’ve been on the receiving end of 784 of his runs at an average of 65.3 (third-highest for a batter against an opposition) and strike rate of 133. Umesh Yadav is a powerplay phenom: 51 wickets in the first six overs, two shy of the all-time IPL record. Prithvi Shaw is a powerplay phenom: 429 runs at a strike rate of 170 since 2021, which makes him better than everybody else in the league. Sit back, grab some popcorn and just watch them go at it.
