Update from Trossard camp after Al-Ittihad submit £30m bid for Arsenal star

Leandro Trossard's feelings have been made clear after Arsenal received an 11th hour bid for one of their stars as Saudi Arabia look to snap up the Gunner before their transfer window closes.

Arsenal's transfer window over

With the Premier League transfer window having closed on August 30th, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta were active right until the end, submitting a "deal sheet" to get a loan move for Chelsea's Raheem Sterling over the line.

The 29-year-old, who had been publicly made into an outcast by Blues boss Enzo Maresca, will spend the season in north London, though there is no option or obligation to buy the England international, and it is believed that the deal has been struck on very favourable terms for the Gunners.

"Outstanding" player rejected chance to make Arsenal move on deadline day

He chose to stay put…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 2, 2024

Sterling's arrival follows those of Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino from Bologna and Real Sociedad respectively, while the club also signed David Raya permanently after he won the golden glove at the Emirates Stadium last season.

Al-Ittihad make bid for Arsenal's Trossard

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Saudi side Al-Ittihad have tabled a bid for Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard, who started the 1-1 draw with Brighton. It is claimed that the offer sits at around 35m euros (£29.5m), and comes in the final hours of the Saudi transfer window, which slams shut on September 2nd.

Al-Ittihad remain on the hunt for a left-winger to complete their high-profile frontline, which includes Karim Benzema and saw them sign Moussa Diaby from Aston Villa this summer.

Trossard, who scored the opening goal against Aston Villa as Arsenal picked up a 2-0 win at Villa Park, is down to the final two years of his £90,000 a week deal at the Emirates Stadium, but has offered no indication that he is keen to leave the club in the immediate future and has featured in all three games so far this season.

In fact, the bid has already been rejected, with CBS journalist James Benge revealing that the Gunners "swiftly dismissed interest", adding that the Belgian international is "not for sale at any price".

Interestingly, it is also claimed that "a source close to the player indicates that he has no desire to leave the Premier League for Saudi Arabia", which could also scupper any potential future move with Trossard down to the final two years of his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The 29-year-old joined the Gunners from the Seagulls 18 months ago, and has been a success in north London.

Though often used from the substitutes bench, he is seen as a key squad player, making 46 appearances across all competitions last season and finding the net 17 times.

Indeed, Mikel Arteta hailed him as a "little magician" towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign. Speaking after a win against Wolves in April, Arteta explained: “He is a little magician. He is a big threat. So composed, so cool.”

Given that Arsenal already considered themselves light in attack before the end of the transfer window, and only succeeded in bringing Sterling to the club and letting Reiss Nelson leave, the bid always seemed extremely unlikely to be accepted by the Gunners since they cannot sign a replacement until their transfer window opens on January 1st.

Kohli: Mental health management will become 'a norm of the future'

“You’re literally going to the ground and coming back to the room, and you don’t have a space where you can just disconnect from the game”

Kohli: Mental health a huge factor that shouldn’t be neglected

Virat Kohli believes that mental health management will become “a norm of the future” alongside the physical workload management that is already prevalent in cricket. The India captain said he doesn’t want a situation where his players fall away for a lack of space to express their issues. The resumption of cricket, after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, starting with the English summer last year, has come with additional mental stress, especially for touring players. As the team that – alongside England – has played the most amount of cricket during this period, while also having the additional load of the IPL, India’s top cricketers have had to deal with the challenge of going from one biosecure bubble to another with little break in between. Now they are scheduled to play the World Test Championship final and a five-match Test series in England, followed by the remainder of IPL 2021 and the T20 World Cup in the next four months. All that apart from the second-string team that will be playing in Sri Lanka through July.”The kind of structure we’re competing inside, for a long period of time it’s difficult for players to stay motivated and find the right kind of mental space in one area and just do this stuff day in and day out, and [then] dealing with high-pressure situations,” Kohli said. “So this will definitely become a norm of the future, where apart from the workloads, the mental health side of things will also come into the picture big time.”You don’t have an outlet at all in today’s day and age. You’re literally going to the ground and coming back to the room, and you don’t have a space where you can just disconnect from the game and go out for a walk or a meal and a coffee and say, ‘Let me refresh myself. Let me just get away from the game a little bit.’ I think this is a huge factor, which should not be neglected. Because as much hard work as we’ve done to create this team, you don’t want players falling out because of mental pressures and not having the capacity or space to express themselves.”Kohli has often endorsed this view on mental health. Using his own mental troubles on the 2014 England tour as an example, he has spoken of a “strong need” for professional help in Indian cricket. As things stand, there has been no official move in that regard on the part of the BCCI but seated alongside India coach Ravi Shastri, Kohli said he believed it could become a priority.”And you’ll see it during the Test series,” Shastri said. “I’m not talking of the WTC, but if you add that as well – when you have to play five Test matches in this environment, in six weeks, it’s no joke. Even the fittest will need a break. More than the physical part, it’s the mental part. You can be destroyed mentally, being asked to do the same things day in, day out, and then go out and perform. And it’s not easy to recover, especially if you’ve had a bad day. So it’s important that you shuffle the guys around, and keep them mentally fresh. It’s not the physical part. You keep them mentally fresh – because of the circumstances.”Coincidentally, the structure of the England tour will allow Kohli and Co some time off•Getty Images

Coincidentally, the structure of this tour will allow India players time off and perhaps a lot more freedom of movement than the confines of the recently suspended IPL. While India was in the middle of an aggressive second wave when the tournament was called off, England recently recorded its first day without a Covid-related death in over a year, and vaccination has hit a steady pace. The WTC final ends on June 22, and the England series won’t begin until August 4.Kohli welcomed this break and said it wouldn’t affect any momentum they could pick up from the WTC final. The lack of cricket in the interim is not something they’re fazed by, he said, adding that preparation is “all in the head” if you’ve played in the conditions before, like most of the Indian team has – either at senior level or for India A.”I think it’s a great opportunity to refresh, restructure,” Kohli said. “Hopefully, if things are okay out in England, we would have finished our quarantine periods – [would be nice] just for the guys to be normal for a few days and just disconnect again, understanding the pressure of a five-match series. Like in Australia, if we had to compete inside a [biosecure] bubble for that long a period of time, the whole tour would have been very tough.”The fact that we had a little bit of freedom to go out and access the kind of things that the locals were, gave us a bit of space and time to reset and refresh. So I think it’s absolutely fine. It’ll give us time to regroup as a side and prepare again for a long series. That kind of setup is very important before you go into a lengthy series. We know that playing five Tests in England can be very challenging and daunting. So we want to have the most time before that series to set up for that series and be in the zone.”

Maresca expected to let £89m Chelsea player go in another high-profile axe

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is expected to axe another one of his high-profile players, who could now leave Stamford Bridge in January.

Maresca leads brutal summer clearout at Chelsea

The west Londoners have let 16 senior players leave in the last few months, with many of them sealing moves just before the summer transfer window shut.

Free agent once "close to signing" for Chelsea holds new talks to join them

Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Diego Moreira, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Lesley Ugochukwu are among the many senior players who departed Chelsea, either on loan or permanently, with a host of others sealing moves away at the eleventh hour.

Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Djordje Petrovic, Tino Anjorin and Raheem Sterling all agreed very late-window transfers elsewhere, with the latter making a deadline day switch to London rivals Arsenal on loan.

Maresca has been forthright in telling his players where their futures lie, with the tactician explaining just how honest he has been with the likes of Sterling.

"I prefer to be honest with players," said Maresca on his exit-bound players at Chelsea, and how he's dealt with them.

"The ones who are not involved are not going to be involved and they won't get any minutes if they stay. I don't know what happens when the window closes if they are still here. The ones who will get minutes are the ones I think can help us.

"Raheem [Sterling] is a fantastic guy who has trained very well. Every manager has a different idea, and he is the kind of winger that is not one that I like. History and numbers speak for Raheem. He knows exactly what he needs to do.

"The rest are training apart, they are not going to get minutes. I have been clear and honest with them."

Out-of-favour defender Ben Chilwell has been heavily linked with a Chelsea exit, and could still seal a move to Turkey, as their transfer window doesn't close until Friday.

The Englishman is rumoured to be training away from Maresca's first team, with some reports suggesting Chilwell has been offered out to Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Istanbul Başakşehir in the Super Lig.

Striker David Datro Fofana was in talks over a move to AEK Athens in Greece, and an agreement gas reportedly been reached, as per Fabrizio Romano.

There is now also uncertainty surrounding Mykhailo Mudryk and his future at Chelsea. Reports have suggested that Mudryk faces a battle for his place at Chelsea under Maresca, but reliable journalist Simon Phillips has provided a more definitive update on the Ukrainian.

Chelsea expected to loan out Mykhailo Mudryk in January

As per Phillips, writing via his substack, Maresca and Chelsea are expected to loan out Mudryk in January – which would come two years after the Blues decided to pay £89 million for his services.

The 23-year-old winger has failed to justify his mammoth Shakhtar Donetsk price tag so far, despite Steven Gerrard calling him the "real deal" when he first joined.

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

Mudryk boasts just seven goals and five assists over 62 total appearances, but the increased competition for places out-wide potentially threatens his place.

Opportunity leads to knock-out as Leicestershire's rookies fluff their chase

A thriller on paper looks a touch less impressive on close inspection, as 716 spectators attest

George Dobell29-Jul-2021

Warwickshire 303 for 6 (Lamb 119*, Yates 72, Brookes 63) beat Leicestershire 296 for 9 (Patel 118, Swindells 69) by 7 runsA few years ago, before Andy Murray, it seemed that if you owned a pair of trainers and a tennis racket, there was a fair chance you’d be ranked in the British top ten and given a wildcard to Wimbledon. It’s probably a bit unfair to suggest the same thing is currently happening in county cricket. But it does seem fair to observe that some young cricketers who, a few weeks ago looked nowhere near their county first teams, are winning opportunities in the Royal London One-Day Cup.Opportunity is a funny word. On the surface, it looks like an unmitigated positive thing. But it sometimes comes in fancy dress: ‘we’d like you to consider opportunities elsewhere’, for example. Or ‘how would you like an opportunity to be single?’; ‘how about you give me your wallet?’ That sort of thing. And it’s true that, in recent days, some young players at Scarborough or Guildford or Taunton (among other places) have taken an opportunity to show what they can do. That has to be celebrated. They’ll have benefited from the chance, too. To see Matt Lamb (the third Warwickshire player to record a maiden List A century in successive games) and Rishi Patel register their first List A centuries was to see talents blossoming. There’s a lot to like about that. But too much ‘opportunity’ can also pose a threat. And as you looked at the team lists from this match, it was hard to avoid the conclusion that this was dangerously close to a second XI match masquerading as first-team cricket. It was hard not to wonder whether spectators will continue to pay; sponsors will continue to invest and even whether List A statistics should still be appropriate. It’s not so long since university cricket lost its first-class status, is it? These things can happen.Related

Take Warwickshire’s opening attack, for example: it consisted of Jordan Bulpitt and Karl Carver. Both of whom have been signed by the club for a few weeks to provide cover for a club suffering from a spate of absentees. The rest of the attack included a 17-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 21-year-old playing his third List A game. One member of the playing staff missed this match because he was cramming for his A Levels, which are almost a year away. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. It’s probably very sensible. But it does underline the view that this has become a developmental competition sometimes featuring players who, in other circumstances, might still be playing for their clubs and schools. That’s not meant to sound harsh. Many of those on show here (not least Rehan Ahmed, who is just 16 years of age) are talented youngsters who could have a future in the sport. But it’s entirely possible to hold both views – to celebrate the opportunity provided here but worry for the repercussions – concurrently. This was a fun game. But you do worry what value preparation it will provide for facing Mitchell Starc in a World Cup semi-final. And if the premier domestic 50-over competition isn’t doing that, isn’t it struggling to justify its role?Perhaps this is why only 716 spectators made it to Edgbaston on Thursday. For a ground with a capacity of somewhere around 25,000, it at least ensured few difficulties with social distancing. Maybe there is a lesson here. On smaller grounds, the likes of Guildford, a crowd of 3,000 can provide the feel of a vibrant festival. Perhaps there is a case for looking at hosting such games on outgrounds. As it happened, this game developed into something of a slow-burning classic. Despite seeming to have it won twice, Leicestershire somehow managed to fall short by seven runs. Their head coach, Paul Nixon, described himself as “distraught”; he looked it, too.The short story is this: requiring 87 more for victory, with eight wickets and more than 15 overs in hand, Leicestershire capitulated. Inexperience played its part, no doubt, but from the moment Patel hit a long-hop into the hands of deep midwicket, Leicestershire lost seven wickets for 70 runs. On an outstanding batting track and against an attack greener than the outfield, it felt like a missed opportunity. There were heroes in the Warwickshire side, of course. Will Rhodes, their captain, showed the benefit of his experience with a career-best spell of bowling that at least forced Leicestershire to search for runs, while keeper Michael Burgess, sometimes standing up to even the seamers, ensured they felt the pressure and pulled off a couple of nice catches. But Leicestershire will know that too many of their batters, not least Arron Lilley (batting at No. 6 despite a career-average of 11) and George Rhodes played unnecessarily aggressive strokes when a calm head might have been more appropriate. The wicket of Marcus Harris – run-out after dawdling for the first half of a sharp single – was also completely unnecessary, while Patel, for all his excellence, will know he should have seen his side home. George Garrett picked up two wickets when tailenders tried to scoop him; there had to be an easier way.One of those, Dieter Klein, suffered what appeared to be a significant hamstring injury attempting a sharp run. While he continued with a runner after treatment, he was bowled next ball. For a 32-year-old who is out of contract at the end of the season, it was a worrying setback.”Words fail me,” Nixon said. “They were soft dismissals. We had the game won and we’ve thrown it away. Every middle-order player has had a soft dismissal. It was unprofessional and it was soft. I’m devastated.”The other opportunity Leicestershire had to seal this match came when Warwickshire, despite another impressive contribution from Rob Yates at the top of the order, slipped to 121 for 5 in the 24th over of their innings. Such a precarious foundation forced Lamb and Ethan Brookes to take a cautious approach to the start of their stand but, over time, they prospered to the extent that their sixth-wicket stand of 153 represents a record for Warwickshire in List A cricket. Lamb, in particular, played some impressive shots but Brookes, who took 28 balls over his first 11 runs, also became markedly more fluent and took Warwickshire to a total that might be considered only a little below par.Patel and Harry Swindells appeared to have put Leicestershire will on the road to success with an opening stand of 159 in 25 overs. But when Swindells missed a long-hop and Patel seemed to lose concentration once his century was achieved, nobody else could contribute more than 16. Kids, eh?

Arteta must drop Martinelli and unleash Arsenal’s "incredible" star

After an international break that saw them lose Martin Odegaard, Arsenal resumed their Premier League campaign over the weekend with a brilliant 1-0 win over fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, but they managed to nullify their opponent’s hyper-attacking style of play and claim all three points courtesy of a Gabriel Magalhães header in the second half.

However, while the fans should still be basking in their club’s derby win, the team have to prepare for their first match of the Champions League tonight, away to Atalanta.

With the format being changed to a league competition, the Gunners have to get off to a winning start. As such, Arteta needs to put out another strong lineup, although he should make a few changes, one of which is dropping Gabriel Martinelli.

Gabriel Martinelli's recent form

Over the last 18 months or so, Martinelli hasn’t been in the greatest form. He ended last season with eight goals and five assists in 44 games, a far cry from the 15 goals and six assists he racked up the campaign prior.

There was some hope that the former Ituano gem would return to his best at the start of this season after a reasonably impressive showing in preseason.

However, after four appearances, three of which have been starts, he still hasn’t scored or assisted a single goal and has amassed a paltry expected goals figure of just 0.25, which is seriously underwhelming.

In his defence, while he missed that big chance against Spurs on Sunday, he was lively and kept Pedro Porro on his toes while also providing some defensive cover to Jurrien Timber, but it is starting to feel like last year all over again.

Overall, the Guarulhos-born gem is clearly a talented player, but it would make sense for Arteta to take him out of the spotlight, give him a rest for tonight’s important game, and start another winger who has an awful lot to prove in his place.

Why Raheem Sterling should start

Now, the first thing to say is that, yes, Raheem Sterling is in a similar boat to Martinelli at the moment in that his stock has fallen quite dramatically over the last couple of years.

However, there are two key differences. The first is that the Englishman’s struggles have come in the context of a massively dysfunctional Chelsea side, where Kai Havertz was also struggling before he moved to North London.

Second, while he’s not been at his best, the 29-year-old has still been productive.

For example, in his 43 appearances for the Blues last season, the “incredible” winger, as talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him, scored ten goals and provided eight assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.38 games.

Moreover, with a must-win clash away to Manchester City coming up on the weekend, the 82-capped international might not get another chance to start a game until next week, which in turn could make him less sharp when called upon in other matches.

Ultimately, despite putting in a useful performance against Spurs on Sunday, Martinelli’s struggles in front of goal continue, and even though his reputation has taken a hit, Sterling was surprisingly productive last year. Therefore, the Brazilian should be dropped from the starting lineup for the Englishman this evening.
