Dean Elgar braces for 'tough' South Africa captaincy tenure

He’s the country’s third Test captain in as many seasons, and his main task is to rebuild the team

Firdose Moonda05-Mar-2021

‘I’m still going to have pretty straightforward, open and honest conversations with my team-mates, with the management, with the media’ – Dean Elgar•PCB

Dean Elgar will be South Africa’s third Test captain in as many seasons but his task is the same as the pair that have gone before him: to rebuild the South African team.Faf du Plessis had to do it in 2016, when AB de Villiers went on sabbatical, and injuries kept Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel out of significant parts of the season. Quinton de Kock had to do it in 2020-21, amid administrative turmoil, a pandemic and a team for whom losing had become a habit. They both had some impact – du Plessis won home and away series against Australia and de Kock oversaw South Africa’s first series win in two years – but they also both had enough of leading.du Plessis gave up the role after a dip in form during a period of racial tension last season while de Kock has been relieved of the job after a tough Test series, personally and collectively, in Pakistan. In both cases, it was obvious that captaining had become a had-to-do, not a want-to-do, often prefaced by the word reluctant. Elgar, new to the job which is doubtless informing his early perspective, is the opposite. “It’s going to be tough, and something that you have to be willing to do. Otherwise I don’t think you should be put in this position,” he said. “I am fortunate to be put in this position and that the hard work I have put in behind the scenes has been noticed.”The desire to lead seems to be at least part of the secret of what makes a good captain. For du Plessis, initially, it made him a better batsman but when results went south, retirements mounted up, and rhetoric in the country was polarised, he stood down. For de Kock, the extra responsibility coupled with the restrictions of living in biosecure environments, always appeared too much. His form suffered, his on-field decisions were iffy, and he appeared out of his depth in interactions with the media.Related

Even for Elgar, his first dalliance, as a stand-in for du Plessis at Lord’s in 2017, did not go well and he was only too happy to hand an imaginary armband back when du Plessis returned from paternity leave. But things have changed. “I’ve played a few more games since then and learnt a lot more about what Test cricket and how a team operates behind the scenes,” Elgar said. “I have been part of the leadership group for a couple of seasons now. Then, I was a young guy just sitting there. Deer in the headlights. I’d like to think I have established experience since then.”Not just any experience. Elgar’s 67 Tests make him the most experienced player in the current group, now that du Plessis has retired and taken with him the last link to the class of 2012, that won the Test mace. Though du Plessis was not a playing member of the team that won in England, he travelled with the squad and made his debut in the next series in Australia, where Elgar was also given his first opportunity. They were both rookies in a team that was top of the rankings, where they stayed for another three years, it’s Elgar’s task to get them back there.”It’s going to be a serious challenge, but it’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to. I feel if we get a few things in place we can definitely take the Proteas brand back to where we were a few years ago. That will be my biggest goal,” he said. “We owe it to the game to carry on moving it forward. We’ve got a long line of young, exciting players who’ve been breaking down doors in domestic cricket to try and get a foot in this squad. It’s good to have fresh blood around. We aren’t at the level of experience we were a couple of years ago, but we do have a couple of experienced players in the squad. I’m going to rely on them to help me through this journey.”Temba Bavuma, Elgar’s vice-captain and new white-ball captain, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and de Kock are all part of the new senior core and that there are only five names in that mix says a lot about the amount of work South Africa’s Test team needs to do. There are places up for grabs and roles to be secured and Elgar hopes the installation of a permanent Test captain can begin the process of settling on a squad. “The players and potential players deserve someone to come in and give them more clarity and more reassurance and stability. That’s going to be on my agenda box-ticking as a leader, to try and get a bit of stability to the squad and try and establish an easier process coming in,” he said.Although he wouldn’t be drawn into which areas he thinks needs solidifying because South Africa have no confirmed Test fixtures in the foreseeable future. “I don’t want to rush into anything now and give a headline saying, ‘Elgar thinks the batting is poor.’ I think there are areas for us to work on but I am not going to clarify anything now because we have time,” he said. And as that time passes, the South African Test team can be guaranteed of one thing, that in Elgar they will always have a leader who speaks his mind, even when he tells them things they don’t want to hear. “I’m still going to be the same guy. I’m still going to have pretty straightforward, open and honest conversations with my team-mates, with the management, with the media,” he said.

Their next Pelle: Southampton set to bid for exciting new forward

Southampton will be raring to go ahead of the new Premier League season kicking off this coming weekend as Russell Martin's Saints make the long pilgrimage up to Newcastle United for their first taste of top-flight action this campaign.

Now, there's excitement and anticipation in the air as a ball hasn't yet been kicked, but no doubt long into the gruelling 38-game marathon when things are stacking up against the South Coast side, there will be some despondent faces as a battle against relegation is presumably fought.

Signings such as Ben Brereton-Diaz should give Martin's men the firepower they desire in an attempt to stave off the drop, but another new centre forward could now enter the building at St. Mary's to really boost the newly promoted side.

Southampton preparing bid for new attacker

According to Greek sport outlet BN Sports, Southampton are preparing to bid an extortionate £26m to try and tempt Panathinaikos gem Fotis Ioannidis to England this summer.

Martin's men aren't alone in their advances, however, for the on-fire 24-year-old, as fellow newly promoted side Leicester City are reported to be keen on adding the 6 foot 2 striker to their own roster ahead of their battle against the drop-zone, with Football Insider even speculating that an intense transfer battle could now ensue between the two outfits.

Fotis Ioannidis

The 11-time Greece international would undoubtedly strengthen either of the sides that are going after him, with the Saints gaining yet another impressive forward player to add to their ever-growing attacking arsenal, which also boasts the likes of Adam Armstrong.

How Ioannidis could be the next Pelle

Landing Ioannidis' services could see Martin and Co snap up Southampton's next Graziano Pelle away from what they already have at their disposal, adding in a likeminded star who can be imposing and dominant in the air, but also lethal and clinical in front of goal with stylish displays.

Ioannidis has regularly got Panathinaikos supporters out of their seats with blistering attacking displays since joining the club in 2020, managing to net 40 goals from 144 games to date playing for the Greek giants, including a delicate finish (footage above) against Villarreal last year.

Pelle, who is now 39 years of age and unemployed after a spell with Parma in 2021, would join the Saints back in 2014 with a similarly lethal reputation in front of goal when playing in Europe, with a staggering 54 strikes managed from just 64 games playing for Dutch titans Feyenoord.

He would then become a reliable source of goals for his new South Coast employers in the top league of England, a career trajectory that Southampton's £26m target will hope to replicate.

Pelle's golden form for the Saints over two seasons would even result in him becoming the club's top scorer in the elite division two seasons on the spin, with the 15/16 campaign seeing him tie with Sadio Mane before he secured a major move to Liverpool.

Often using his towering frame to get the better of defenders attempting to keep tabs on him, Pelle's game isn't too dissimilar to that of Ioannidis', with the 6 foot 2 Greek forward scoring two of his 15 goals from last campaign using his head.

More pressingly, however, it seems the in-demand forward also has the clinical edge in front of goal Pelle possessed before moving to the South Coast.

The electric Panathinaikos number seven only needed 27 league games last campaign to bag an impressive 15 strikes, backing up football analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as a "dangerous" presence up top for defenders to thwart.

This statement buy could well dent the Southampton bank significantly, but if it means the Saints win another top striker that can potentially terrorise Premier League defences, on top of the move angering Leicester who would lose out, it might well be one worth making.

Shreyas Iyer set to be out of IPL 2021 with shoulder injury

He is likely to be out of action for a few months, with surgery scheduled on his left shoulder

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Mar-2021

Shreyas Iyer is set to miss out on the whole of IPL 2021•BCCI

In a setback to both the player and the Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer is set to miss the entire IPL 2021. ESPNcricinfo understands that Iyer, who is the Capitals captain, will undergo surgery to his left shoulder, which he partially dislocated on Monday while fielding during first ODI of the England series. It is understood that Iyer is likely to be out of cricket for at least a few months, thus erasing any hopes the Capitals had of him returning during the second half of IPL 2021, which will be played in India between April 9 and May 30.On Thursday, the BCCI had only confirmed Iyer had been ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against England without releasing any details on the injury, as well as the surgery. It also wished Iyer “speedy recovery” as response to a tweet by the Indian batsman, who said he would be “back soon.” Iyer picked the injury during the early part of the England’s chase in the first ODI. Posted at extra cover, Iyer fell awkwardly on his left shoulder while successfully intercepting a drive from Johnny Bairstow in the eighth over of the England innings. Immediately, Iyer was seen grimacing and rolling on the turf while holding his left shoulder. After brief medical attention, Iyer was rushed out for scans, which revealed he had “sublaxtion” (partially dislocated) in his shoulder. It was the third time since IPL 2020 that Iyer had hurt the left shoulder, having also hurt it during the ODI series in Australia.Indications that Iyer’s injury this time was serious, came via a tweet posted early on Thursday by Parth Jindal, the Capitals’ co-owner. Jindal said he was “devastated and gutted”, and wished Iyer “quick recovery” as India “needs you in the T20 World Cup.” Iyer had been appointed captain of the Delhi Daredevils, as they were called then, during IPL 2018. The team had won only one of their first six matches that year, which made Gautam Gambhir, then the captain, step down. Iyer, who was then 23 years old, was identified as his successor, three years after the franchise had bought him as an uncapped player.Iyer had pipped local boy Rishabh Pant to the leadership position. He soon built a close rapport with the Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting, as the team’s fortunes turned around with playoff qualifications in the last two seasons. In 2019, the Capitals lost in the Eliminator, and in IPL 2020, they reached the final, losing to Mumbai Indians. Iyer was the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL 2020.

West Brom hit gold on Hawthorns ace who’s now worth more than Thomas-Asante

Although still reeling from a mass exodus of top players this summer, West Bromwich Albion comfortable opening day win in the Championship, overcoming Marti Cifuentes' Queens Park Rangers on their own patch 3-1, was perhaps a tad surprising.

Josh Maja was the star of the show at Loftus Road, scoring a hat-trick after being gifted the starting spot up top by Carlos Corberan, and showed to the overjoyed West Brom masses in West London that losing Brandon Thomas-Asante doesn't have to be the end of the world.

Away from Maja, Tom Fellows also shone brightly against the Hoops, as the West Brom youth product aims to reach even higher heights than he managed last campaign when he broke into the first team and never looked back.

Fellows' time at West Brom

Fellows constantly terrorised the QPR defence last weekend to ensure West Brom comfortably picked up all three points ahead of their clash with Leeds yesterday.

It was Maja's second of the day that was all the 21-year-old's making, however, supplying the chance for his teammate to put away.

Moreover, the tenacious winger was brave and alert with five duels won in total, to give his side the energy they needed to push on to pick up the win.

His aim will just be to keep performing at this high level and strive to become an even more concrete part of Corberan's first-team plans going forward, having had his breakout moment in the spotlight last campaign.

Fellows would finish his promising 2023/24 season with five goals and four assists next to his name from 38 games in all competitions, having previously just starred at youth level for his boyhood employers, before finally going on to make the grade in the senior mix.

As a result, his transfer value for the West Midlands club has also risen, with his current price tag higher than that of Thomas-Asante's – according to Football Transfers – even with the former Baggies man recently winning himself a move to divisional rivals Coventry City.

Fellows' transfer value at West Brom

The standout Baggies prodigy is now worth in the region of £2.4m, with Thomas-Asante having been sold to the Sky Blues this summer for around £2m.

It's been quite the sharp rise for Fellows, who was once just a wide-eyed youngster shipped out on loan to League Two with Crawley Town, but there were signs he would eventually spark into life and become a top Championship performer in the fourth tier, with former Crawley coach Darren Byfield labelling him as "unbelievable" when the pair had previously worked together.

Only two years ago, before his rise to stardom in the first-team mix, Fellows was worth just £429k, and his value could soar way above £2.4m if he continues to be a star for West Brom this season, on the way to another promotion charge taking shape.

Whilst the youngster's value continues to go up and up, West Brom might have cashed in on Thomas-Asante at the perfect possible time, with his price-tag standing at a far higher £2.9m in March of this year, before tumbling down to a lesser £2.1m.

Brandon Thomas-Asante for West Brom.

The Baggies will continue to look for their next main man up top to complement Fellows' creativity, with Maja undoubtedly benefiting at this point in time, in the wake of Thomas-Asante leaving.

Whoever is chosen to be Corberan's next leading man going forward will love playing alongside Fellows you imagine, who will want to be a key player for his boyhood club moving forward after dazzling against QPR, as promotion is eyed up as the main objective once more.

West Brom can finally replace Thomas-Asante in swoop for PL "handful"

West Bromwich Albion would welcome this new striker in through the door with open arms.

Gerald Coetzee comes in for Royals, but apparent NOC issues for Rassie van der Dussen

The Royals’ overseas roster stands at just five members with Coetzee’s addition

Rassie van der Dussen is not coming to India for the IPL•AFP/Getty Images

South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen, it appears, is not going to join the Rajasthan Royals in India for the remainder of IPL 2021. ESPNcricinfo understands that he got a visa to fly to India but failed to obtain a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Cricket South Africa, who cited injury as the reason for this. He was meant to replace the injured Ben Stokes. The Royals, meanwhile, named 20-year-old South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for England batter Liam Livingstone. Coetzee has landed in India and finished his quarantine, and trained with the Royals squad on Saturday. The Royals’ overseas roster has dwindled to just five, including Jos Buttler, David Miller, Chris Morris, Mustafizur Rahman and Coetzee.Coetzee represents the Knights in South Africa’s domestic circuit and has also played two Under-19 World Cups. He has nine wickets and an economy rate of 7.68 in eight T20s.The Royals’ overseas contingent was not at full strength even before the IPL started. Jofra Archer underwent surgery in March and was eventually ruled out of the tournament and three other players – Stokes, Livingstone and Andrew Tye – left India for different reasons. Stokes broke a finger in mid-April, and Livingstone left India citing “bubble fatigue”. Then, Tye also returned home as anxiety about the worsening Covid-19 situation in India built up.The severe state of the pandemic in India is likely to make it hard for the Royals to arrange for replacement players for their internationals. Six games into their season they are placed second from bottom on the points table with only two wins. They play their next game on Sunday, against the bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad.
