Sussex rookies strike back as Rory Burns century precedes Surrey slump

Rory Burns reached his first hundred of the Covid-shortened 2020 summer but a late break for bad light triggered a dramatic finale to day two as Surrey lost three wickets in three overs and Sussex wrested back control of their Bob Willis Trophy match at the Kia Oval.Nineteen-year-old off spinner Jack Carson had Burns leg-before for a sparkling 103 with the first ball following a 25-minute interruption, and in the next over 18-year-old paceman Henry Crocombe sent back Jamie Smith and nightwatchman Adam Finch for ducks in successive balls. Smith was bowled, shouldering arms, and Finch pinned leg-before.Ben Foakes just about dug out Crocombe’s hat-trick ball and, with Hashim Amla on 6, Surrey will resume tomorrow on 171 for 4 in reply to Sussex’s 415.But those three wickets for just two runs in fifteen minutes of mayhem has potentially changed the course of the game and Surrey’s twilight problems were only brought to an end at 6.10pm when umpires Neil Bainton and Ben Debenham again took the players off for more bad light with 10 overs still technically remaining in the day’s allocation. Before the late drama, Scott Borthwick had made a circumspect 50, from 121 balls, as he and Burns added 164 for the first wicket until the former Durham left-hander was leg-before to Carson, who with fellow teenager Crocombe were by far the pick of Sussex’s attack.Having reached 37 not out in 21 overs before tea, Burns led an impressive acceleration in the final session to show that rapid scoring could indeed be achieved despite a slow and soporific surface. His hundred, in his first red-ball innings for Surrey this season, took 111 balls and the England Test opener struck 15 fours. He and Borthwick added 108 in 18.3 overs after tea, before Carson parted them.It was Burns’ 19th first-class century, two of which have come for England, and – back captaining Surrey in this match – he was clearly determined to take the match by the scruff of its neck after two months largely spent playing six Tests from inside England’s bio-secure bubble. The left-hander was also no doubt hungry for runs. Burns scored only 20 runs in four innings during the Pakistan Test series, although he did make 57 and 90 in the third Test against West Indies at Old Trafford at the end of July and 234 runs from five innings in that earlier series. Here, his hard-won Test stature was fully evident as he used his feet to the spinners and also effortlessly outscored Borthwick after safely negotiating a testing new ball spell of 5-2-6-0 from Crocombe – who almost yorked Borthwick with one eye-catching delivery – and then an initial, pre-tea spell of six overs from Carson that cost just four runs.Burns’ one false stroke was a top-edged hook at a George Garton bouncer which flew high over keeper Ben Brown for four to take him to 77, but he was prolific off his pads and quick on anything short.Earlier, only late hitting from David Wiese and No 10 Carson had managed to haul Sussex’s run rate above three per over after they began day two on 239 for 3.Wiese’s 47-ball 57 also made sure Sussex banked four batting bonus points and featured three sixes and six fours – the best of those strikes an almost contemptuous checked straight drive off Dan Moriarty’s left-arm spin which brought the former South Africa all-rounder his first six.And Carson contributed two lusty legside sixes off Moriarty in his 21 before being last out, caught at deep mid wicket with just nine balls of the 120-over first innings limit remaining.Moriarty, although expensive, took the last three Sussex wickets – with Wiese, taken in the deep and Stuart Meaker, bowled for 12 having a mow from down the pitch, also falling to him after lunch – to finish with 5 for 154.Off spinner Amar Virdi’s 3 for 80 from 32 overs was a worthy effort, and fast bowler James Taylor impressed in a second new ball spell of 2 for 21 in which he removed 16-year-old James Coles, Sussex’s youngest first-class debutant, for 11 and Sussex captain Brown for a well-made 51.Brown, who hit seven fours after resuming on 9, was caught behind off a Taylor leg-cutter after providing most of Sussex’s forward momentum following the early loss of first day century-maker Tom Haines, leg-before to Virdi for 117.Moriarty skidded one out of the footholds into Garton’s pads to have him lbw for 12 as lunch approached, but at least Wiese and Carson hit out productively in a ninth wicket alliance of 53 in little more than six overs.

Adams alternative: Wolves could sign their own Vardy in £5m marksman

The summer transfer window has officially opened for business, though Wolverhampton Wanderers have already completed their first signing, welcoming 20-year-old winger Rodrigo Gomes from Braga for about £13m.

Gary O'Neil's side expect to sell Pedro Neto this summer, who is valued at £60m, and could look to spread the recouped funds across the squad to strengthen and build on last term's 14th-place Premier League finish.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Robins pundit Tom Sandy recently claimed that the Championship outfit should be looking at the ballpark of £5m, while he's out of contract next summer.

Southampton's Che Adams – who is out of contract this month – has been heavily linked with a move to Molineux but recent reports suggest that a Saudi Pro League advance could scupper Old Gold plans. Enter Conway?

Tommy Conway's style of play

Profiling the 21-year-old following his surprise inclusion in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for the European Championship, The Scotsman has written that he possesses speed and energy 'akin to a Duracell Bunny'.

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

Having scored 24 goals and placed five assists over the past two campaigns, Conway has proven himself to bear the mark of a true finisher, with such skill on show when City defeated West Ham United in the FA Cup back in January.

Statman Dave hailed his "clinical" performances across two fixtures, Conway scoring in the third-round draw before repeating the trick one week later to net the winning strike in the replay.

Said to be 'the next Jamie Vardy' by former Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson, Conway's pace and deceptive power could indeed lead him to flower into Wolves' very own version of the iconic Leicester City sharpshooter.

Vardy, the spearhead of Leicester's incredible Premier League title triumph in 2015/16, has scored 190 goals and added 66 assists across 464 matches for the club, with his remarkable movement and prolific shooting skills the best marker of his elite-level talent.

Conway might have a long way to go but he could emulate the former England international in rising from the Championship to make a real impact at a middling Premier League side like Wolves, hoping that the gears will shift into place and advancements will be made toward the upper end.

He's also immensely technical and boasts some of the crispest distribution around, ranking among the top 1% of forwards across divisions similar to the Championship for pass completion, as per FBref, having been dubbed a "gifted boy" by Rotherham's Steve Evans.

With Cunha hopefully staying put and Hwang Hee-chan coming off the back of a 12-goal Premier League campaign from only 25 starting appearances, Conway could enter the fray with the security of depth – allowing O'Neil and co to forget all about their pursuit of Adams.

After settling in, there's no reason why the promising Scotland international can't forge a successful career for himself at Molineux. After all, Vardy and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins are just two demonstrations of the riches that can be found in digging into the second division.

How Wolves' starting XI could look after £83m summer spending spree

The Old Gold might not boast the deep pockets of other teams but some exciting arrivals could be welcomed this summer.

O time gaúcho ocupa a 13ª posição, com 21 pontos ganhos.

Wolves could promote "outstanding" youngster if Semedo leaves this summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to build on an impressive 2023/24 season next campaign. Last term, many thought they would struggle to survive the drop in the Premier League with huge financial constraints in the transfer market.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

However, they defied expectations and managed to finish 14th in the table on 46 points, just three points behind tenth place Crystal Palace, meaning a top-half finish was not out of the realms of possibility. Wolves’ finish is a real testament to the wonderful job O’Neil has done at Molineux.

It is a baptism of fire at the start of next season for Wolves. They travel to the Emirates Stadium on the opening day, to face back-to-back runners-up Arsenal, before hosting Chelsea at Molineux in game week two. The Midlands club then make the trip to the City Ground to face a Nottingham Forest side who will no doubt be desperate to improve on their 17th-place.

With a big season coming up, the Old Gold could well look to move some players on from their squad. There is one major player who could well be on his way out, after almost leaving last summer.

Nelson Semedo could leave Wolves

The player in question here is Portugal international right-back Nelson Semedo, who is currently representing his country at Euro 2024. The 30-year-old was linked with a move away during the 2023 summer window, but could now depart this year, instead.

Semedo is one of three senior players who are entering the final year of their contract after the club triggered a two-year extension to his current deal last season. However, as per Steve Madeley of The Atheltic, he has the “most delicate situation” out of the three expiring players’ deals.

Nelson Semedo for Wolves

Madeley explains that, due to such a high value, the Portugal right-back “will have to sign a new deal or be sold this summer” for the club to maximise his value. They paid upwards of £37m to sign the player from Barcelona back in September 2020.

The 30-year-old played a fair amount in 2023/24 under O’Neil, 41 times to be exact, including 36 appearances and 3,093 minutes in the Premier League. However, his contract situation means a move could well come about for the defender, and they might well have a ready-made replacement in the academy.

Why Dexter Lembikisa could be Semedo's replacement

The player who could be an ideal replacement for Semedo is young right-back Dexter Lembikisa. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Rotherham before Scottish side Hearts took over his loan spell in January.

The young right-back played an important part for both Rotherham and Hearts. He featured 44 times in all competitions for both clubs, playing an impressive 3,336 minutes. He is also a full international with Jamaica, picking up ten caps so far, and recently making his Copa America debut.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Lembikisa is highly thought of at Molineux. He has already played four times for Wolves' first team, making his debut on the 12th of November 2022, against Arsenal. His most recent appearance for the Midlands side came against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 2023, although he has only ever played once in the Premier League.

His former academy coach at Wolves, Steve Davis, is one man who speaks highly of Lembikisa. Following an FA Youth Cup victory over Tottenham in 2022, Davis described the youngster as a “top player”, explaining that he is “a great example to the other lads”, before calling him “outstanding”. That is high praise from such an important figure on your footballing journey.

Given Lembikisa’s experience on loan this year, and his importance for Jamaica at the Copa America, he could well be ready to step into the shoes of Semedo in 2024/25. Should the Portuguese full-back leave Molineux over the summer, Lemibikisa could be a surprise replacement.

The youngster is a right-back who is confident going forward and is a good crosser of the ball. Not only that, he is great defensively, averaging 3.59 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes as per Fbref.

The 20-year-old could be the ideal replacement for Semedo and an excellent option at right wing-back for O’Neil in his transitional back three system.

Everton could axe £25m flop who earns more than Branthwaite

Everton Football Club have been known to make some fairly shrewd signings in years gone by. The summer of 2023/24 was no different for the Toffees, and despite the fact they did not spend much, they brought in some interesting acquisitions to help them survive relegation last season, a feat they achieved.

They signed two wingers on loan last summer, specifically Arnaut Danjuma from Villarreal, and Jack Harrison from Leeds United. Whilst Danjuma struggled to settle at Goodison Park, Harrison’s loan spell was a huge success, and he has since returned to the club on loan again for the 2024/25 campaign.

They also made the signing of experienced campaigner Ashley Young, on a free transfer from Aston Villa. The former Manchester United man proved to be a real utility player for the Toffees last season, and like Harrison, impressed enough to earn himself a new deal at the club for next season.

Everton also recruited two centre-forwards last summer. Youngster Youssef Chermiti joined from Sporting and showed bright moments in his 208 Premier League minutes last season. However, the other number nine Everton signed last summer struggled, and could now move on from the club less than 12 months after joining.

Everton striker could leave the club

The player in question here is 26-year-old striker Beto. He joined the club from Udinese last summer for a fee of £25.75m but did not hit the ground running. However, he could now depart this summer after a tough first season on Merseyside.

That is according to Turkish news outlet Fotomac, who claim that Fenerbache are interested in adding Beto to their ranks this summer. The Turkish giants, who are now managed by the legendary Jose Mourinho, have been in talks with Everton over a potential transfer, with the Portuguese boss approving the move.

beto-everton-dominic-calvert-lewin-dyche-dwight-mcneil-injury-premier-league

According to the report, Everton would want at least £16.9m for the striker. However, given they spent almost £10m more than that, it could well be the case they charge upwards of £25m to reduce any potential losses. They are certainly within their rights to charge that much, given his contract still has three years left to run.

What Beto earns at Everton

It is certainly fair to say that Beto’s move to Everton has not quite worked out how either he or the club would have hoped. The 26-year-old scored just three times in 30 Premier League games for the club, as well as two goals in the Carabao Cup.

He has played 960 minutes in the top flight for the Toffees and averages just three goals every 10 games. Last season, they came against Newcastle United in December, before having to wait until March to find the back of the net again, where he scored against West Ham and then Bournemouth just two games later.

Surprisingly, Beto earns more than some of Everton’s biggest stars. According to Capology, the 26-year-old striker is on £50k per week, which is more than key defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who earns £35k each week. Branthwaite played a central role for the Toffees last season, featuring 35 times in the Premier League. Young also earns less than the former Udinese man, with the Everton defender on just £40k per week.

Not only that, Beto earns less than key players James Garner and Dwight McNeil. The former Manchester United academy pair earn £30k per week and £25k per week respectively, perhaps a surprising figure for two players so vital to Sean Dyche’s side.

Stats from Capology

It could well be the case that Everton decide to move Beto on during the summer transfer window. There are few complaints to be made, given his performances have been below par and he has struggled to find the back of the net.

Considering Everton’s issues with financial fair play, and Beto’s fairly sizeable wages, it could be a deal the Toffees do and look to reinvest in a new striker for next season as they look to survive another season in the Premier League.
