'The sky is the limit' for Jofra Archer – Ben Stokes

Vice-captain says Archer’s fifth spell in the first innings was “one of the best” spells of fast bowling he has seen as a player

Ben Stokes believes that “the sky is the limit” for Jofra Archer after his remarkable display on Test debut at Lord’s, but admitted that the aftermath of his thunderous bouncer to Steven Smith caused “a pretty scary few minutes” as the medical teams assessed Smith for concussion following a direct hit to the side of the neck during his innings of 92.Stokes, whose reduced workload with the ball played a part in his promotion to No. 5 in England’s second innings – from where he scored a hard-earned seventh Test century – also confirmed that Smith had been in good spirits since the incident, with the pair and Archer all knowing each other well from their time together at Rajasthan Royals.”I messaged him last night [Saturday] to see how everything was,” Stokes said. “We’ve got a good relationship from playing together at Rajasthan and so does Jofra. I had a little giggle with him, which was good, saying Jofra’s a good shot to hit that pea-head!”I think he was as in good a fettle as he could have been but yeah it was good to see him get back up and walk of the pitch.”ALSO READ: Miller: Archer evokes Jonah Lomu on ‘frightening’ debutThe incident occurred during a remarkable eight-over spell from Archer in which he exceeded 90mph with 16 consecutive deliveries, and also struck Smith a painful blow on the left forearm which later required a scan to rule out a fracture. With England on the attack, Stokes had been posted at leg gully so was at close quarters to witness and hear the impact.”It just hit flesh,” he said. “[It was] not one of the nicest things to see on a cricket field, seeing someone go straight down like that was a pretty scary couple of minutes for everyone out there, but it was great seeing him get back up.”Marnus [Labuschagne] took a heavy blow [in the second innings] but the difference was he got straight back up and was ready for the next ball. In that moment it’s never nice but you look for the reaction – Steve stayed down so that was the scary thing, he laid flat and we weren’t quite sure where everything was out there.”Despite the unease in the moment, Stokes has no doubt that Archer’s use of the short ball had not crossed any line, and that England wouldn’t hesitate to unleash him again at Headingley next week, where Australia could be without Smith once again as he recovers from delayed concussion.”It’s part of the game and a big part of Jofra’s game, being aggressive, not letting batsmen settle,” said Stokes. “That bouncer of his is a huge asset and he’s going to keep on doing it. When someone takes a nasty blow, no bowler is going to say ‘I’m not going to bowl that again because I don’t want to hit them again’ – the concern is always there when someone takes it but next ball, when you get back to the mark, it’s ‘I’m going to keep doing it’.”Stokes and Archer know each other well from their time playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL•BCCI

Despite watching Archer at close quarters both with England and at Rajasthan, Stokes admitted he too struggles to pick up the short ball, because, he says, Archer’s rhythmical approach to the crease gives no hint of what’s to come.”He doesn’t have any tells,” said Stokes. “Some bowlers you get a tell when they’re going to bowl a bouncer or a different ball, but because everything is so rhythmical with Jofra it is tough to see when that bouncer is coming. He’s very tight to the stumps as well. Everything looks just so languid, you wonder if he’s loose and then he fires one … watching he ball fly through, it was very impressive to watch.”He gives another dimension to our bowling attack and what we are able to do. The first innings he bowled 29 maybe 30 overs, but his last spell of eight overs was one of the best out-and-out fast bowling spells I have seen since I started playing.”We’ve seen Mitchell Johnson do it to us, especially in 2013, but Jofra just makes it look so easy … like he’s walking in to bowl. And I’d rather have him on my team than have to face him. He’s a frightening talent and he’s announced himself on the world stage, just in a different format again this year. Literally the sky is the limit for him and he’s a great addition to our Test team.”One area of concern, however, revolved around Archer’s workload in his maiden Test, which his match tally of 44 overs being exactly twice as many as that of Chris Woakes, and four times as many as Stokes was called upon to deliver. Stokes, however, insisted that the rain-reduced nature of the contest – as well as England’s desire to claw back their 1-0 deficit – played a part in Joe Root’s tactics.”A lot played into the fact we lost two days to rain,” he said. “Jofra was the biggest threat and you’re going to throw the ball to your biggest threat, and that’s Jofra and Stuart [Broad]. I’m easy whether I’m not bowling or bowling long spells. I just do whatever Joe says to be honest.”

Glasner must axe Crystal Palace dud who earns more than Guehi

It's been a rollercoaster of a season for Crystal Palace fans this year.

The Eagles have picked up some impressive results in the Premier League, such as their 2-2 draw away to Manchester City, but they've also looked abysmal at points, such as in their 4-1 defeat to bitter rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

Unfortunately, there has been more of the latter than the former so far, which resulted in the sacking of Roy Hodgson and the hiring of the exciting Austrian coach, Oliver Glasner, earlier this month.

The former Eintracht Frankfurt boss has already seen his side pick up four points in two games, and while there's a lot of work to be done, one thing he should do is make sure the club don't offer another contract to one of their senior players in the summer, a player who somehow earns more than Marc Guehi.

Marc Guehi's time at Crystal Palace

Guehi has been out of action since the club's embarrassing defeat to Brighton earlier this month, and while there was hope he might be back in action soon, it was confirmed earlier today that he's going to miss at least another two months following knee surgery.

The nine-capped Englishman was signed for a fee of £18m from Chelsea in July 2021 after spending an impressive season and a half on loan with Swansea City in the Championship, and has since become an integral cog in the Eagles' machine.

In his first season in south London, he made 42 appearances for the club and chipped in at both ends of the pitch, scoring four goals and providing one assist alongside his impressive defensive displays.

He would make another 40 appearances the following season, and even with his current injury problems, he already has 26 this year.

Alongside his defensive abilities, the Abidjan-born monster has become one of Palace's most prominent leaders and was named captain for the first time in a game against Watford in February 2022, something he described as a "huge honour."

Since then, he has pulled on the armband many more times in the absence of Joel Ward, and he has rarely, if ever, looked out of place doing so.

With all that in mind, you might expect the "top-class" centre-back, as he was described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, to be one of the club's top earners. Yet, his £50k-per-week wage is not even in the top five, and he sits comfortably behind a senior player who is undoubtedly less crucial to the side.

Nathaniel Clyne's wage at Crystal Palace

Yes, the highly-rated and incredibly impressive Guehi earns significantly less – £30k-per-week, to be exact – than right-back Nathaniel Clyne at Selhurst Park.

Now, the first thing to say is that while there might still be some value in keeping the 32-year-old around in terms of experience and squad depth, his number of performances combined with his woeful output makes it a hard case to push.

For example, in the four seasons he has spent at the club since his return in October 2020, the former Liverpool full-back has made just 77 appearances, scored five goals and provided two assists, which is a worse offensive output than Guehi, which just isn't good enough for a modern-day right-back.

Moreover, the "poor" defender, as described by journalist Josh Bunting, is currently earning £80k-per-week, equating to about £4.1m-per-year and making him the joint third-highest earner at the club.

With the recent arrival of Daniel Munoz and the progressive mentality of Glasner, it seems impossible to justify the wages that Clyne is currently earning, and while he might be a great professional, the club cannot offer to renew his deal this summer.

Neste ano, a história é diferente. Foram nove gols marcados nos mesmos quatro jogos.

Cooper replaces Kycia Knight for third Australia ODI

Knight had injured her lower back during the opening overs of the first ODI of the series in Coolidge

The CWI interim selection panel has replaced the injured Kycia Knight with Britney Cooper for the third and final ODI of the series against Australia, on Wednesday in Antigua.Knight had injured her lower back during the opening overs of the first ODI of the series in Coolidge, where Australia thrashed West Indies by 178 runs. Knight did not bat in the West Indies chase as a result, and did not feature in the second game. After “examining the scans” done on her, the CWI medical panel ruled Knight of the third ODI.Cooper joined the team in Antigua on Monday in preparation for the final game even as West Indies trail the series 0-2.Cooper last played an ODI in June in England but her single-digit scores in the series led to her omission from the original ODI squad against Australia. In six international innings this year – two ODIs and four T20Is – she has scored only 57 runs so far with a high score of 20.West Indies are also without their regular vice-captain Hayley Matthews, who had been withdrawn from the series just hours before the start of the opening ODI, due to disciplinary issues. The exact nature of her breach of the code of conduct is not known yet.

Masterclass from Richardson and Mennie skittles New South Wales

Tom Cooper’s unbeaten half-century ensured the chase was completed with plenty of breathing space

Incisive opening spells from Kane Richardson and Joe Mennie helped South Australia to a bonus-point five-wicket win over New South Wales at Allan Border Field. The new-ball duo made the most of the helpful bowling conditions early after captain Jake Lehmann won the toss, taking three wickets each to dismantle the New South Wales top order. They slumped to 5 for 27 in the seventh over and could only manage to post 173. South Australia veteran Tom Cooper steered the chase with a patient, unbeaten half-century to ensure they never lost wickets in clumps. They won with 11 overs to spare to secure the bonus point and leave New South Wales winless after two matches. The toss was vital given the overhead conditions and the ball duly darted around in the first hour of play and made life difficult for the batsmen. But four of the first five players dismissed were guilty of pushing with hard hands well in front of their front pads.Jack Edwards and Daniel Hughes both inside-edged booming drives, Moises Henriques was pinned lbw by a hooping inswinger, Kurtis Patterson nicked a peach from Mennie and Nick Bertus chopped on defending off the back foot.Peter Nevill and Daniel Sams were forced to rebuild and produced 54-run stand, but scoring with fluency was difficult. Arjun Nair and Sean Abbott provided handy contributions down the order however New South Wales were bowled out inside 39 overs. The chase was not as simple as it appeared as the sideways movement gave way to some variable pace and bounce.Callum Ferguson got away to a brisk start striking four boundaries in 22 before edging Abbott to slip. Alex Carey, promoted to open in the absence of the injured Jake Weatherald, looked in complete control cruising to 36 before feathering an under edge flailing at a wide delivery.Lehmann and Cooper broke the back of the chase from there before Lehmann was undone by some extra bounce from Nair to be caught behind for 37. There were some late wobbles with miscues from Harry Nielsen and Alex Ross keeping, but Cooper closed out the contest by reaching his second straight half-century.

20-goal striker expected to leave after claim Tottenham could move for him

A club are expecting their star striker to leave this summer, coming after a claim that Tottenham could look to sign him for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Spurs set sights on Harry Kane replacement

While Spurs want to add a new winger to their ranks in the next transfer window, according to reliable media sources like Evening Standard reporter Dan Kilpatrick, the north Londoners are also said to be contemplating an out-and-out replacement for club-record goalscorer Harry Kane.

BBC pundit says "astonishing" forward may decide to join Tottenham

He’s been on fire for his club this season.

Postecoglou's side have coped very well in their first full season without Kane, who completed a blockbuster move to Bayern Munich last summer, but it is believed they could look to bring in a natural number nine despite Richarlison's exceptional form recently.

Following a difficult first 16 months in north London, the Brazilian has come into his own, but that hasn't stopped Spurs from being linked with Brentford striker Ivan Toney among other centre-forward options.

As well as Toney, the likes of Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez and Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy have been mentioned as potential summer targets in recent months.

In terms of the latter, he's a very interesting option, as his contract is widely rumoured to contain a very affordable and tantalising £15 million release clause.

The Guinea international, as a result, could emerge as one of Europe's most sought-after strikers later in the year. Tottenham could well be in the mix for Guirassy among a host of other clubs, with journalist Dean Jones telling GiveMeSport that technical director Johan Lange might try to steal him away from Stuttgart.

Stuttgart strikerSerhou Guirassy.

Guirassy has bagged 20 league goals so far this season, a stat made all the more impressive by the fact he was injured for a period and also jetted off to AFCON.

Stuttgart anticipating Guirassy exit this summer

As per Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, taking to X, Stuttgart are anticipating Guirassy's departure with a decision expected in the next couple of months.

The 27-year-old is a real one to watch it would seem, with Plettenberg also shedding light on his dressing-room personality which could be appealing to Postecoglou at Tottenham.

"He is very strong physically," said Plettenberg to Sky Germany.

"He knows how to score and he is known as a leading figure in the dressing room."

If Spurs do end up making a move for the player, Guirassy's leadership qualities could be a real plus point alongside his obvious goal threat, making this one to watch.

India should have only five Test centres – Virat Kohli

The India captain says touring teams should know which venues they’re going to play at

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Ranchi22-Oct-2019

Virat Kohli gets ready for the Pune Test•PTI

Virat Kohli wants India to play their home Tests at only five venues. He did not name them but said Test cricket in India should be distributed across “strong Test centres” as they are in other countries.Kohli said this in response to a question about whether India should restrict the home Tests to the traditional big-city venues – Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru.India follow a rotation policy to allot their home games in all formats, and South Africa’s just-concluded tour took place at three venues that were each hosting just their second-ever Test matches: Visakhapatnam, Pune and Ranchi.”We’ve been discussing this for a long time now, and in my opinion we should have five Test centres, period,” Kohli said, after the conclusion of the Ranchi Test. “I mean, I agree [with] state associations and rotation and giving games and all that, that is fine for T20 and one-day cricket, but Test cricket, teams coming to India should know, ‘we’re going to play at these five centres, these are the pitches we’re going to expect, these are the kind of people that will come to watch, crowds’.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“So that becomes a challenge already, when you’re leaving your shores, because we go to any place, we know we’re having four Test matches in these venues, this is what the pitch is going to offer, it’s going to be a full stadium, the crowd’s behind the [home] team, and look, you want to keep Test cricket alive and exciting. I totally agree with the fact that we need five Test centres at the max.”It can’t be sporadic and spread over so many places where people turn up or they don’t, so in my opinion, absolutely. You should have five strong Test centres that teams coming to India know that this is where they’re going to play.”England play most of their Test matches at their six traditional venues – the two London grounds, Lord’s and The Oval, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham. Australia play the bulk of their home Tests in six cities too – Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Hobart. In both these countries – and in South Africa and New Zealand as well – there is usually a set order to which cities host which Tests; The Oval always hosts the last Test of the English summer for instance. Also, in the Southern Hemisphere, traditional dates are fixed for certain venues to host their Tests, such as Boxing Day at the MCG or Durban, and the New Year’s Tests in Cape Town and the SCG.India, in contrast, spread their Tests all over the country. They’ve played home Tests at 27 venues overall, and 18 grounds since the turn of the millennium. The major venues have usually hosted the most Tests in this period, but, as Kohli said, sporadically. Mumbai and Chennai, for instance, haven’t hosted any Tests since late 2016.Crowds for Test cricket at newer venues in smaller cities and towns has been a talking point for quite a few years, though there isn’t a clear pattern to suggest that Tests at all such venues are poorly attended. The three grounds that hosted the series against South Africa are all located at a fair distance from the city centre, and the facilities at some of the grounds aren’t particularly spectator-friendly – three-fourths of the stands in Pune, for instance, don’t have roofs. Still, though there were no full houses, there was a decent turnout on most days in Visakhapatnam and Ranchi, and over the weekend in Pune.
