Unirb surpreende o Bahia e conquista primeira vitória no Estadual

UNIRB TENTA DIFICULTAR A VIDA DO BAHIA NO INÍCIO

VISITANTES SURPREENDEM E TIRAM O ZERO DO PLACAR

Crystal Palace can forget Nketiah by signing £20m ace who’s a pure “finisher”

Crystal Palace have been rather inconsistent this season, as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League.

Roy Hodgson’s biggest problem has been in front of goal, with only Burnley and Sheffield United scoring fewer in the league.

Therefore, the former England boss will look to fix that problem this month by signing a new centre forward.

Crystal Palace transfers latest – Borja Mayoral

TEAMtalk recently revealed that Crystal Palace are keeping an eye on Borja Mayoral of Getafe.

The Eagles could attempt to sign the Spaniard this January, with the move far from impossible.

It is rumoured that a fee of around £20m would be enough to secure his services this month.

It is well known that Palace will attempt to bring a centre forward into the club this month, with their main target reportedly being Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal.

Football journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed that the Eagles’ interest is true and that they could offer £30m for him. However, the transfer guru also mentioned that unless the Gunners find a suitable replacement, they won’t be willing to let the 24-year-old leave.

With that being the likely outcome of the saga, Palace could look to switch their attention to Mayoral and forget Nketiah, with the former being an attainable and more realistic target.

Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard.

The Real Madrid youth star has been on fire this season in La Liga, netting 12 goals in 19 matches, with only Jude Bellingham scoring more in the division. The striker played a vital role in Getafe’s survival last season, and he has been instrumental in the side’s climb up to eighth this campaign.

The table below displays Mayoral’s statistics from this La Liga season and how he compares to his positional peers.

Mayoral has featured in the front two of a 4-4-2 this season, and his output in front of goal has been terrific. His goals-per-game ratio is superb, and he is a clinical "finisher,” as per footballer writer Ben Mattinson, which is highlighted by his low shots, goal/shot ratio, and overperformance of xG.

This is the exact profile that Palace have been missing this season, as the Spaniard has netted more than Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard combined (eight).

The ex-Roma player is also an intelligent striker who can drop into pockets in between the opposition midfield and defence to pick up the ball. His relatively high passes completed prove that, while his progressive passes and passes into the final third show that he has the ability to start attacks as well as finish them.

Overall, Mayoral is exactly what Palace needs, and he’s even outperformed Nketiah by seven goals this season. Hodgson should definitely look to bring the Getafe star in before another Premier League club snaps him up.

Saqib Mahmood six-for sets up comfortable Lancashire win over Northants

Pace bowler restricts Northamptonshire before fifties from Keaton Jennings and Haseeb Hameed secure 45-run DLS victory

England Lions seamer Saqib Mahmood became only the fourth Lancashire player to take six wickets in a List A innings and the first in 21 years as he set up a commanding Royal London Cup win over Northamptonshire at Emirates Old Trafford.Mahmood, 22, returned a career best 6 for 37 as the Steelbacks, invited to bat, were bowled out for 269 in 50 overs. He then watched openers Haseeb Hameed and Keaton Jennings hit 65 and 63 respectively on the way to 164 for 2 in the 29th over when rain arrived, with Lancashire winning by 45 runs on Duckworth Lewis Stern. The Red Rose have now won two and lost two in the North Group.Colin Croft, David Hughes and current coach Glen Chapple (twice) have all taken six-fors for Lancashire, the last being Chapple at Yorkshire in 1998.Mahmood struck three times with the new ball to leave the score at 26 for 3, so a 270 target was a triumph for a Northants side who have now won one, lost three. They were boosted by half-centuries for Ricardo Vasconcelos, Rob Keogh and West Indies captain Jason Holder, who received treatment to his lower left leg early in his innings and later did not take the field.Keogh’s unusual 66 off 97 balls did not include a four or six, while Holder hit seven fours and two sixes in 72 off 58 as he looked in no obvious discomfort. They shared 89 inside 16 overs for the sixth wicket to recover from 103 for 5 in the 26th before former Red Rose allrounder Luke Procter gave the visitors further impetus with a late 36.Mahmood gave Lancashire the ideal start by bowling Josh Cobb. He then had Richard Levi caught at deep square-leg and Alex Wakely brilliantly caught behind one-handed by Dane Vilas.Vasconcelos and Keogh steadied with a 76-run fourth-wicket stand before Keogh and Holder united to back up fifties in Sunday’s home win over Warwickshire.Holder hit sixes over midwicket either side of reaching 50 off 47 balls before falling to Mahmood trying to repeat the dose in the 45th over. The catch was an outstanding relay effort on the midwicket boundary between Australian Glenn Maxwell and Rob Jones, the latter diving to complete the catch at the second attempt.Maxwell then took two catches at the death, including Ben Sanderson running in from deep cover to hand Mahmood his sixth. The early stages of Mahmood’s career have been beset by injuries, with his previous best of 5 for 60 coming in last year’s North v South series in Barbados. In reply, Jennings and Hameed shared a measured opening stand of 130 inside 24 overs, only for the former to be run out by a direct hit from Saif Zaib at square leg.Jennings reached a run-a-ball fifty and Hameed’s came off 60 balls before Maxwell hit successive leg-side sixes off Zaib’s left-arm spin to move into double figures.Hameed was caught behind off Procter’s seamers, with Lancashire 154 for 2 in the 29th over, before Vilas hit two boundaries in 10 off three balls immediately prior to the rain arriving. Maxwell was unbeaten on 20.

Wolves can replace Jimenez with swoop for £30k-p/w "phenomenon"

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be eyeing up a signing or two before the end of the January transfer window in just over two weeks, especially as they are currently thin on the ground with regard to attacking options.

Losing forwards Hwang Hee-Chan, Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva this month means Gary O’Neil is only able to call on Matheus Cunha, Pablo Sarabia and Pedro Neto, for at least the next four weeks and this could prompt him into action.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil.

With this in mind, who could O’Neil look to in order to bolster his attacking options this month?

Wolves’ search for a striker

According to Football Insider, Wolves have registered an interest in signing Che Adams from Southampton in the current transfer window, just months after failing with a bid to bring him to the window during the summer.

Hwang is their current top scorer with 11 goals so far this season, yet in reality, the Molineux side have yet to really replace Raul Jimenez, who left during the summer to join Fulham.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

It is clear that the club need someone to fill the void left by the South Korean star while he is away representing his nation at the Asian Cup. Could Adams be the perfect candidate?

Che Adams’ record against Wolves

Jimenez scored 57 goals in 166 appearances for Wolves during a five-season spell in the Midlands and, during his first two seasons at the club, he was one of the most prolific strikers in the top flight, scoring 13 and 17 goals respectively.

Injuries and a lack of form meant he finally left last year, but O’Neil will be hoping the club can replace him by signing another out-and-out forward.

Adams has played against Wolves on 11 occasions during his career, yet has only scored once and grabbed one assist, hardly an outstanding record.

That said, the £30k-per-week frontman could be available for a knockdown price this month as his contract expires in June and this is perhaps what is tempting O’Neil into making a move for the Scotland international striker.

Why Adams is a good Jimenez replacement

Bizarrely hailed as a “ketchup bottle phenomenon” by his former coach, Ralph Hasenhuttl, Adams scored 39 goals in 170 appearances for the Saints, chipping in with 17 assists too.

He can also play on the wing if required and this type of versatility will be a big bonus for O’Neil, yet it is clear that Adams will operate through the middle should he join Wolves.

Pundit Ally McCoist has previously hailed Adams as “clever” and he has enjoyed some goalscoring exploits for Scotland over the previous few years.

The 5 foot 9 forward has netted six goals in 25 matches during his international career thus far, with the most notable effort coming against Denmark in a stunning 2-0 win three years ago.

Adams may not be the most prolific striker, yet his bustling style of play and physical strength could give O’Neil’s men something extra up top, and he could potentially work well alongside the likes of Hwang and Cunha in a bid to replace Jimenez's once wonderful output at Molineux.

Wolves and Fosun given Armando Broja transfer ultimatum by Chelsea

There are now only five days to go until the transfer deadline on 1st February, and Gary O'Neil and Wolves still haven't managed to add a new striker to their squad, having allowed Sasa Kalajdzic and Fabio Silva to leave on loan for Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers respectively.

One potential target for the Molineux outfit is Chelsea's Armando Broja, who doesn't appear to have a long-term future in west London. Wolves have been in touch, along with fellow Premier League sides Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Ham, to express their interest in a potential deal. The Blues are willing to sanction an initial loan, but they're insistent upon a £35m obligation to buy at the end of it.

As you can see in the table above, Broja has appeared in 19 games for Chelsea this season, and started five of the last seven with striker rival Nicolas Jackson away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Clearly, though, Mauricio Pochettino has been dissatisfied with his output, and is ready to move on.

Fosun now receive Broja ultimatum

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, Broja is Wolves' top striker target this month. However, Chelsea have issued an ultimatum to Fosun, telling them that they need to agree to the obligation to buy if they want to get a deal done. Wolves may feel as if they can test the Blues' resolve on the price tag, however, given that they clearly want rid of the Albanian.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones said: "Wolves' intent around Broja is definitely there. They will sign a striker, and they’d like it to be Broja. Chelsea say it can be done, but with an obligation.

"If the obligation is £35m, then that's a big call from Wolves if they're willing to throw themselves at that one because there's a reason that Chelsea are putting an obligation in there.

"That’s telling you that they don't want the player anymore if they're saying that Wolves have to buy him because if Chelsea still had faith in Broja, they would be sending him to Wolves to score the goals they've been hoping he would get and bring him back into the picture to do a job for them. But that's not the case at the moment. Chelsea are saying it's got to be an obligation."

O'Neil and Wolves eye "red-hot" striker available for £20m – report

Only Jude Bellingham has scored more goals than him this season.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 12, 2024 Diallo and Mayoral among Broja alternatives

If Wolves don't respond positively to the aforementioned ultimatum, there are a couple of different targets they could pivot towards in the final days of the window. One of those is Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, who's been watched closely and shares the same agent as Hugo Bueno.

Crystal Palace and Arsenal are interested too, but with Getafe demanding £20m, he too could prove overly expensive for a side walking a financial tightrope.

That could lead Wolves to favour Al-Shabab's Habib Diallo, who's apparently grown unhappy in Saudi Arabia and wants to return to Europe. There's rival interest in France and Germany, but they're apparently ready to loan him out if they receive an appropriate offer.

Wolves have clearly taken ample time to assess their options and lay the groundwork for some potential deals, but we're fast approaching the phase of the window where they need to press the button and move forward.

Steven Mullaney summons Notts response with gritty hundred

Notts captain gives his side a lifeline after they slip to 159 for 8 in response to Hampshire’s 310

Paul Edwards at Newport21-May-2019

Steven Mullaney acknowledges his fifty•Getty Images

Steven Mullaney first learned about cricket in Golborne, a town which now lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan. The place is no sort of Orwellian wasteland but neither is it Ambridge. And it certainly has next door to nowt in common with the pastoral glory of Newclose. Yet as we watched Nottinghamshire’s captain fight like fury to keep his team in this match it was possible to discern the toughness which still characterises the league cricket he once played. Mullaney’s century here was, among its other qualities, a monument to simple defiance and it should be recalled fondly by all those who saw it.But let us be crystal on two points: firstly, the resolution Mullaney displayed is not some exclusively Northern characteristic; and secondly, Nottinghamshire’s skipper long ago transferred his absolute allegiance from Old Trafford to Trent Bridge. It is in the East Midlands that he has won all the honours the domestic game has to offer and his loyalty to the place is very deep. So much is clear every time he strides to the wicket and it was plain again when he walked out with Nottinghamshire on 61 for 3 in reply to Hampshire’s 310.Things became much worse before they got even slightly better. Having beaten Ben Slater outside the off stump and induced a mistimed pull from Chris Nash, Kyle Abbott nipped one back to bowl Joe Clarke for 23. Then Jake Libby was leg before to Keith Barker to leave Nottinghamshire on 72 for 5. And all these ructions, we thought, on almost the first summer’s day of the season. For there was a Blyton-blue sky and so there had to be hampers. The hospitality was corporate and it was familial. The white Burgundy was chilled this afternoon and the beer needed only gravity to get it from barrel to tankard. Most in the crowd cheered happily either side of lunch as Abbott and Barker put Nottinghamshire in the toils. But then they watched in grudging admiration and near-perfect joy as Mullaney and Tom Moores, scrappers both, set about rebuilding the innings. Men under panamas and women in print dresses agreed that fast bowling looked warm work.Warm but also productive. Having battled away for 101 minutes to stifle his attacking instincts and accumulate 34 out of a 79-run stand with Mullaney, Moores almost waved his bat at a ball from Fidel Edwards and gossamered a catch to a diving Tom Alsop down the leg side. Luke Fletcher and Stuart Broad followed him back to the pavilion in short order and the visitors took tea on 159 for 8 with Mullaney 43 not out. People wondered how much batting Hampshire might have to do before stumps. As things turned out, by the time Mullaney had near single-handedly reduced the deficit to 71 runs Joe Weatherley and Oli Soames needed to survive six overs, something they failed to do, Weatherley falling leg before to Fletcher when only eight balls remained. We are set for two more fine days on the abudant Island.During the afternoon, though, spectators who craved warmth had sat in the generous sun; many bared their legs and some were badly advised to do so. Those who sought the shade lounged under the scoreboard on the Medina side of the ground and ate their ice-creams in peace as Mullaney continued his innings. One well-spoken chap licking his cornet was even watched by his envious pooch. On the opposite side of the ground Jack Russell sold sketches and prints. He, perhaps above all spectators at Newclose, would have admired Mullaney’s refusal to yield in the evening session. Nottinghamshire’s warrior-leader reached his fifty off 113 balls but the deficit was then still over a hundred. So he buckled down again and shepherded Matt Carter through a superb stand of 80 for the ninth wicket. Carter played a fine supporting role as Mullaney took just 52 balls over the second fifty runs of the hundred he reached with a pulled six off Mason Crane. This was Mullaney’s fourth century against Hampshire and it was nothing like a perfect demonstration of batsmanship. He was dropped three times, most noticeably on 25 when Weatherley put down a two-handed slip chance off Abbott. But faultless 30s matter little when set beside the effort Nottinghamshire’s skipper summoned at Newclose. When he reached three figures he raised his arms to the pavilion as if to reinforce the message that he requires similar effort from everybody in any team he leads. When he top-edged a return catch to Ian Holland, spectators stood to him and many were wearing Hampshire badges. He had played an innings worthy of the day and worthy of the place in which it was played. But they will read about Mullaney’s hundred in places far beyond the Isle of Wight this evening; and they will smile at their warm memories.
