Chasing only 122, England Lions were reduced to 95 for 8 before Duckett saw them through

In what was a grand-stand finish to the five-match one-day series, Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 70 steered England Lions past the 122-run target with one wicket to spare to deny India A a whitewash. At 114 for 9, England Lions were still eight runs away, but No. 11 Tom Bailey and Duckett survived six overs together before Duckett hit the winning six for a consolation win.India A captain Ankit Bawne chose to bat in the morning in Thiruvananthapuram but opener KL Rahul’s rut continued, as he was bowled for a duck to Lewis Gregory on the first ball of the match. Bawne, too, fell for a duck in the 10th over.Jamie Overton then struck twice in one over to dismiss Rishabh Pant (7) and Siddhesh Lad (36) to reduce India A to 48 for 5, and it was only due to a patient 52-ball 23 from Axar Patel and a run-a-ball 21 from Deepak Chahar that ensured the hosts were not bundled out for under 100.Deepak then took three wickets – including that of captain Sam Billings – in his first spell to reduce England Lions to 43 for 4. A 44-run partnership between Duckett and Steven Mullaney (8) then followed, before legspinner Rahul Chahar and Axar combined to reduce them from 87 for 4 to 95 for 8. Duckett’s 86-ball innings, however, saw England Lions through. The sides will now meet for the two-match unofficial Test series in February in Wayanad, Kerala.

Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day has made the feel-good factor at the club momentarily return.
However, in reality, Erik ten Hag’s side have underperformed massively this season, as they sit seventh in the Premier League with one less defeat (8) than they suffered in the entire of last campaign after just 19 matches.
Man Utd could sign Martinez's dream partner in "top talent" who's like Van Dijk
Erik ten Hag is desperate to reinforce his defensive department this January.
ByTom Lever Dec 29, 2023
With that in mind, the boss will look to improve his squad this winter window, with a midfielder on his wish list.
Man Utd transfers latest – Joao Neves
According to reports in Spain – as per the Manchester Evening News – the belief is that the Red Devils are keeping an eye on Joao Neves.
Benfica midfielder Joao Neves
Ten Hag’s side is among the favourites to acquire the Benfica star, but he has a release clause of €120m (£104m) in his contract – something which could rise to as high as €150m (£130m), according to claims in Portugal.
Therefore, United may be priced out of the move this winter, especially considering they must stay within the financial fair play guidelines.
How Joao Neves compares to Sofyan Amrabat
At just 19 years of age, Neves has become one of Benfica’s key players ever since the sale of Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder has featured in 25 matches for Roger Schmidt’s team this season, often playing in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1, which has also previously been favoured by Ten Hag.
United lacked depth and athleticism in midfield last season, which led to the club purchasing Sofyan Amrabat on a loan with the obligation to buy him in the summer. However, the Fiorentina loanee has failed to live up to the standards set for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Sofyan Amrabat
With Kobbie Mainoo taking on more responsibility and becoming a vital cog in the United system, the signing of Neves would ultimately cause one man to drop out of the side, Amrabat. Therefore, let’s see how the Benfica wonderkid and United’s number four compare based on stats from the last year across the top European leagues.

As you can see, from an in-possession perspective, not much separates them in terms of how they set the tempo and can control a game, neither of them is the type to shy away from the ball. They both retain possession well and are not afraid to force the ball into the forwards in order to start an attack.
However, the 19-year-old is much more creative and often takes on the role of a playmaker. Due to his 5 foot 8 frame, he possesses the ability to glide by players with ease, which makes him press-resistant and a threat in the final third. This has earned him a comparison to Luka Modric by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig – who described him as a "roaming playmaker".
That likeness to former Ballon d'Or winner Modric – who is also a rather slight figure at just 5 foot 8 – should no doubt pique the interest of those at Old Trafford, with it seemingly wise to push for a deal for Neves, rather than signing Amrabat permanently – something which doesn't look like happening at present anyway.
Amrabat is known for his defensive capabilities, but the Portugal U21 star wipes the floor with him from that perspective as well. Neves is a tenacious tackler who can comfortably protect the backline, stop transitions, and lead a press, which means he would be the perfect fit for Ten Hag, who likes his side to be strong in each of those scenarios.
The midfielder's energy and love for winning the ball make him a "warrior,” as per Kulig, and he is the type of player United desperately needs. However, spending over £100m on a relatively inexperienced midfielder does seem like a huge risk that will either be classified as an excellent acquisition or a disaster of a move.
Tottenham Hotspur will only play once in the Premier League until the end of January, with the FA Cup third round taking control of English domestic football this weekend.
Granted, that league fixture comes at Old Trafford to face Manchester United, and while the Red Devils have endured a poor campaign thus far, Ange Postecoglou's side will need their wits about them to continue the recent purple patch.
Manchester City eyeing "super" Spurs star in repeat of Kyle Walker transfer
City only sold him in 2022.
ByDavid Comerford Jan 5, 2024
Having enjoyed a stunning start to the season and taking top spot in the early title race, injuries and absences to key players laid waste to the resurgence and a five-match winless run indeed threatened the very fight for Champions League football – with last year's eighth-place finish keeping the football on the domestic front this term.
While the London club have impressed of late and will further emboldened by the imminent returns of multiple absent stars, it's clear that a defender is needed, with Postecoglou even admitting that signing a centre-half is his "priority" this month.
Spurs transfer targets – January
Spurs technical director Johan Lange has scoured the market for possible additions for the backline over the past several months, with OGC Nice's Jean-Clair Todibo of much attention before transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed discussions had collapsed as Spurs desire a swift solution.
Genoa's Radu Dragusin was the new contender for a starring role in the rearguard, and while it has been understood that a deal has inched closer to completion over the past several days, Serie A champions Napoli have rocked the boat with their newly-kindled interest for the £25m-valued defender.
Should Spurs fail to sign the Romanian, advancing their intrigue in Ko Itakura might offer the perfect solution, with Spurs – alongside Liverpool – known to be suitors for the Borussia Monchengladbach star, who is enticed by the thought of moving to the Premier League – according to Caught Offside.
Ko Itakura's style of play
Itakura, aged 26, has been a mainstay in Gladbach's defence since signing from Premier League giants Manchester City for €5m (£4m) in 2022, having spent multiple years out on loan and never broke into the first-team for Pep Guardiola's side.
During his time on City's books – during a loan spell in the Netherlands with Groningen – he was hailed as "one of the very best central defenders in the Eredivisie" by pundit Hans Kraay, who also noted his "incredibly fast" pace.
Ko Itakura for Japan
But since finding a permanent home in the German Bundesliga, the £31k-per-week ace has proven himself to be one of the division's most reliable and dynamic defenders, completing 91% of his passes, winning 62% of his duels and averaging 3.8 clearances per game in the league last season, as per Sofascore.
This season, the 22-cap international sustained an ankle injury in October after scoring twice from seven outings, and while he has yet to feature since, he was named in Japan's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, hinting that a return to fitness is just around the corner.
To showcase his expansive skill set, the Japan international ranks among the top 12% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 15% for goals scored and the top 7% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.
Such a style would only be welcomed under Postecoglou's guidance, with the Australian displaying a certain proclivity for fluidity in expression in his team.
In 2022, Itakura received praise for his dominant performance for Japan against Brazil's Neymar Jr. in a friendly overture to the World Cup, and while the now Al-Hilal forward scored the only goal in the game from the penalty spot, he was subdued against the lively Itakura, whose manager said: "His contribution was a big part of the reason why the team was able to fight without collapsing.”
He's also established and is at ease on both sides of the central defence, meaning that he could confidently stand in for the left-footed Micky van de Ven when called upon.
Why Spurs should sign Ko Itakura
Waxing lyrical over the 6 foot 1 defender's protean approach to his play, Gladach sporting director Roland Virkus said: "Ko covers an unbelievable amount of ground and is a tactically disciplined player who can operate in different positions in defence, including as a No.6."
Given his goalscoring instinct, ball-playing ability and robustness, Itakura could be the perfect alternative to the titan that is Cristian Romero, who is one of English football's finest defenders but has been available too infrequently of late, with injuries and suspensions hindering his campaign.

In the Premier League this season, Romero has scored three goals from 15 appearances, completing 92% of his passes, averaging 5.9 ball recoveries and 3.4 clearances per game and succeeding with a noteworthy 70% of his duels.
Moreover, he ranks among the top 13% of positional peers for goals, the top 5% for tackles, the top 14% for blocks and the top 17% for pass completion and passes attempted per 90.
Speaking of Spurs' revival this season, The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare attributed much of the newfound solidity to the Argentine's leadership, saying: "He makes them (the rest of the back 5 who had never or barely played in the PL) feel like they belong and that they can flourish. He's an outstanding defender, someone you want in your team. Ridiculous bravery."
radu-dragusin-cristian-romero-tottenham-opinion
Much like the Lilywhites centrepiece, Itakura has established himself as a key cog in the Gladbach machine and was hailed a "leading figure" by erstwhile boss Daniel Farke last season.
With Eric Dier attracting attention from Bayern Munich, signing a centre-back makes perfect sense for Tottenham, and Itakura would be the astute addition to really make a difference for this ambitious set of players.

Iftikhar starred with two wickets for just four runs, before staying unbeaten on 33 to guide his team home against Lahore
The Report by Danyal Rasool28-Feb-2019
Iftikhar Ahmed was excellent with ball and bat•PSL
How the game played outKarachi and Lahore are the two largest cities in Pakistan, boasting a population in excess of 25 million. These are gigantic numbers, but when the two have met in the latest edition of the PSL, big numbers have been in short supply. The two played out an edgy low-scoring contest for the second time in ten days, but this time Karachi Kings prevailed, thanks to an an all-round performance from Iftikhar Ahmed, which helped them to a five-wicket win. Karachi’s need was greater, and they have now propelled themselves back in contention for the playoffs. It was a subdued batting performance from Lahore Qalandars, who never seemed to get the lift-off they needed to put up a more testing total. Fakhar Zaman was well contained at the top, while Haris Sohail could manage no more than a start. Even AB de Villiers couldn’t be his destructive self, and though the South African was at the crease for the better part of Lahore’s innings, the team would have hoped for more than the somewhat plodding 32-ball 33 he scored.Iftikhar was the pick of Karachi’s bowlers, oddly bowling just two overs, but conceding just four runs in them and taking the wickets of Fakhar and Haris in the process. It meant they put up 133, left needing another big performance from their bowlers on a track that had begun to slow down. The bowlers did give it a right go, with Sandeep Lamichhane continuing his dazzling form. He took 2 for 17 in his four, with David Weise impressively economical and Haris Rauf irrepressibly valiant. But not everyone was able to deliver in the way they needed to with only a low total on their side. Yasir Shah was disappointing and expensive, and when Aizaz Cheema bowled a no-ball that went for four, Imad Wasim thumped the ensuing free hit for another boundary. That was it for the Lahore fightback, and impressive as it had been, the flawlessness necessary to defend 133 wasn’t quite there.Turning point Iftikhar’s first over was the stuff of dreams for Imad’s side. He bowled wide to the left-hander, frustrating Fakhar, who skied his second ball straight to Babar Azam at point. Two balls later, he had de Villiers sweeping straight to Babar, who dropped a simple catch. Off the last ball, there was a run-out chance, de Villiers surviving by inches. Iftikhar’s day had just begun, and Lahore would never get on the front foot again. Fakhar opened the bowling in defense of a low total. There was little margin for error in the Powerplay, and the gamble did not work. Karachi carted him around for 14, and they were already off and running.Star of the dayHe won’t get the plaudits today because there was just so much happening, but just when Karachi seemed like they might lose their way, Liam Livingstone’s calm head set them back on course. Coming in during a time when Karachi had scored just ten runs in four overs, he began by taking six singles in Lamichhane’s third over along with Colin Ingram. In the next two overs, he found a four and a six off Wiese and Yasir to keep the asking rate in check. That fifty-run partnership with Ingram may not have been the most explosive, but it was precisely what Karachi required in a moment when Lahore threatened to undo all their good work. Livingstone ensured that wouldn’t happen, scoring 38 off 34 to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer, and more importantly, keep his side in real contention. The big missIt might have been conjectured that bowling with Yasir would give Lamichhane an invaluable learning experience, but on the evidence of their performances, much of the advice may be heading the other way. While Lamichhane has thrived after a rough start, Yasir’s game looks like it has fallen away. He never looked in control of the spinning deliveries, and whenever he tried the googly, he invariably ended up dragging it short. The batsmen appeared to pick him out of the hand far better than they did the Nepal teenager. The 11th over saw Livingstone mete out the toughest punishment, smashing him for two fours and a six. That brought the asking rate from 7.5 to almost a run a ball, with Yasir conceding 21 off 3.1 overs. The contrast with Lamichhane gives the more experienced Yasir plenty to ponder with regards to adapting his game for the shortest format.Where the teams standKarachi and Lahore now both have three wins in seven games, occupying the fourth and fifth positions respectively. They are ahead of Multan Sultans, who have just two wins in seven.

Dougie Brown reflects on poor finish to their batting as one of the turning points
Peter Della Penna13-Apr-2019
Peter Della Penna
UAE may have been denied an opportunity to pull off an upset courtesy bad light, but their head coach Dougie Brown feels it was the correct decision to walk off. When the match was decided by DLS method, Zimbabwe needed 25 off three overs with six wickets in hand.Brown felt the light had been deteriorating badly for some time as play continued for several minutes beyond the sunset time of 5.49pm. This extension was largely a result of a two-hour delay for rain in the first innings that resulted in the chase being truncated to 35 overs, off which Zimbabwe were set a revised 210.”It’s not an ideal way to finish a one-day international, because of bad light,” Brown told ESPNcricinfo. “If I’m honest, it was very, very dark. We probably could have come off a couple of overs earlier but we didn’t. The umpires tried to keep us on the field, which I think was the right decision, while spin was being bowled. But the game was still very much in the balance at 25 required off 18 balls.”I think going off because of the light was the correct decision, but it’s really bitterly disappointing for either team that none of us really got a chance to win the game.”Brown gave credit to Shaiman Anwar and Ghulam Shabber giving UAE a chance to win in the first place. The pair offset Kyle Jarvis’ three-for inside seven overs by putting together 131 on either side of the rain break at the 29-over mark.”We lost the toss again and it was very favourable conditions to bowl,” Brown said. “They bowled really well for the first three wickets but thereafter Shaiman and Shabber played exceptionally well and they deserve a hell of a lot of credit for the way that they went about constructing their innings. Disappointing to not finish as well as we could have done, but was wery happy to be defending 209 in 35 overs.”The pitch was still offering a little bit for us although the outfield was wet so we had to try and make sure we dipped in with the new ball. We bowled pretty well. We didn’t quite manage to get too many wickets with the new ball but we chipped away and got ourselves into a winning position at one stage. It was disappointing not to get across the line but you would expect a Full Member like Zimbabwe with experience in their ranks to fight, and fight is exactly what they did.”Even though UAE was in a decent position in the field at 92 for 4 in the 20th over in the field defending an adjusted total of 209, Brown says the Zimbabwean pair of Regis Chakabva and Peter Moor batted exceptionally well to get back in front in DLS before play was called off. Moor in particular boosted Zimbabwe in the waning overs to finish with an unbeaten 45 off 33 balls.”We need to give a bit of credit to Zimbabwe for the way that they scrapped,” Brown said. “They got themselves into a bit of a hole themselves. We dug ourselves out of one and they managed to dig themselves out of one. At 92 for 4, if they lose a fifth wicket, particularly Moor – we know he’s a dangerous player and as captain he feels that he’s got to carry the team’s outcome on his shoulders. We knew we had to get him out but he didn’t give a chance and he played really well.”Brown also underlined UAE’s poor finish to their innings as one of the factors in the loss. In the six overs left to bat after play was reduced to 35 overs, UAE lost six wickets, including 4 for 4 runs in the last 11 balls.”We messed up the last five overs,” Brown said. “We only scored 31 runs and lost six wickets. We probably pride ourselves in being able to finish an innings pretty well but I think they played well. They bowled well, made good plans and we didn’t quite manage to react to the plans that they had. It’s disappointing to come away having only scored the 31 runs off the last five overs but they deserve a bit of credit for the plans they put in place.”
