Transfer news: Club set to reject Aston Villa interest in "superb" signing

Aston Villa's rise can be backed up by their new-found ability to welcome some of Europe's most exciting talents in the transfer market. During the summer transfer window, the Midlands club signed the likes of Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby, as Unai Emery and his ongoing project paid dividends at Villa Park. Since splashing the cash, too, the Villans have more than been rewarded.

As things stand, Villa sit as high as fifth in the Premier League – just four points adrift of table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur – and will look to continue that momentum after the international break. They've reportedly already turned their attention to the January transfer window, too, but could face disappointment when pursuing one particular target.

Aston Villa transfer news

When looking at the current Villa side, you can see that it's all slowly coming together for Emery. With every transfer window, his side have fewer and fewer weaknesses by the time that deadline day arrives. The last window was no different, either, as a number of stars arrived. Diaby, in particular, has got off to a strong start, having a hand in five goals in eight Premier League games so far.

It's the type of transfer that Villa may have been looking to repeat in January, but the latest Pedro Goncalves transfer news suggests that they're in for disappointment. According to Record, via Sport Witness, Sporting CP see their midfielder as untouchable in the winter window, and will say no to any offer, in the hope of keeping hold of Goncalves until at least next summer.

With the Sporting man's contract expiring in 2027, too, any potential deal would be difficult for Villa to negotiate, especially in January, given the Portugal side's reported stance. This may leave Emery frustrated, as he looks to take the Midlands club to unprecedented heights in the Premier League.

Pedro Goncalves' stats

Goncalves' stats show exactly why Aston Villa are reportedly interested in landing his signature. The 25-year-old could be the difference in a Europa Conference League place, and a Europa League place, or even, in what would send shockwaves in the Premier League, a place in next season's Champions League. Here's how Goncalves compares to some of Emery's current midfield options this season, as per FBref.

During his time in Portugal, the reported Villa target has earned plenty of praise, including from Zach Lowy, who posted on X: "Pedro Gonçalves proving once again why he is one of the brightest talents in European football with that superb goal. Reminder: Fernando Santos did not give Pote a single minute in the Euros. Bravo, Engenheiro."

Even if Villa are forced to wait until next summer, acquiring Goncalves should be high up on Emery's priorities. The Sporting star could take the Villans' midfield up a level or two, potentially resulting in new success at Villa Park. When the transfer window opens, the midfielder is certainly one to keep an eye on.

Samit Patel, Tom Moores lay platform before Notts bowlers seal win

ScorecardChampions Nottinghamshire completed a second successive victory, with a bowling attack that showed its experience as the Outlaws beat East Midland neighbours Leicestershire by 19 runs at the Fischer County Ground.”They strangled us well in the middle overs,” Foxes’ captain Colin Ackermann said, after seeing his side collapse from 80 for 2 to 102 for 6 when in pursuit of a target that did not look unattainable on a good wicket and with a lightning quick outfield.Nottinghamshire’s Samit Patel said his side had completed a “convincing” win. “The intent we showed when we batted was good, Tom [Moores] and I managed a good partnership, and we accelerated nicely. Then we bowled to our plans and got wickets at the right time, because it’s always tough chasing ten an over.”The visitors’ total was based on a partnership of 97 for the third wicket between Patel and Moores. Coming together when Riki Wessels’ attempt to pull a quick delivery from Zak Chappell gave Mohammad Abbas a simple catch at mid-on, leaving the visitors on 17 for 2, both batsmen made half-centuries, albeit in contrasting styles.Patel, all wristy flicks, timing and placement, reached his fifty first, off 26 balls with ten fours, before holing out to long-on off Callum Parkinson. The young left-arm spinner picked up the wicket of Moores in the same over. Moores had just reached his fifty with a bludgeoned six over midwicket before his attempt to repeat the shot was well held by Raine.Captain Dan Christian, while unable to repeat his heroics of Friday evening, when he hit a century off 37 balls at Northampton, ensured his side would get close to 200 by thumping 47 from 29.Leicestershire’s reply began solidly enough, Cameron Delport and Neil Dexter compiling an opening partnership of 51 before Luke Fletcher yorked Delport for 33 in the final over of the Powerplay.Mark Cosgrove’s immediate dismissal for a duck, brilliantly caught by Steven Mullaney, one handed high to his right at midwicket, was a hammer blow to the Foxes’ chances, but the clatter of wickets that followed the loss of Dexter did not make for pretty viewing for the sizeable home crowd.Lewis Hill was caught slog-sweeping at deep backward square, Ackermann and Raine at deep midwicket, and although Mohammad Nabi, and in the final over, Abbas, hit out to good effect, there was never a sense that the Outlaws’ score was under any real pressure.”That we got quite close without looking likely to chase it down was frustsrating,” Ackermann said. “We’ve had a few decent knocks, but nothing really substantial and match-winning in the last two matches.”

Man United: £250k-p/w "flop" could leave Old Trafford with a worse legacy than Pogba

Manchester United over the years have flexed their muscles in the transfer market by landing statement buys for extortionate fees, the Red Devils paying obscene amounts for the likes of Antony, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho who all remain at the club today – all three combined transfer fees coming in at a whopping £235m.

Harry Maguire

However, those three players in question still didn't demand a record transfer fee to get them into the building with Paul Pogba's return to Man United solidifying the Red Devils' label as major big-spenders.

The Frenchman – who was originally on the books in Manchester as a youngster – returned back to England after starring out in Italy with Juventus in the summer of 2016, rejoining the Theatre of Dreams for an eye-watering £89m.

His time back at Old Trafford would be dominated by distractions off-the-field, Pogba's attitude frequently under the spotlight throughout his six-year stay at Old Trafford, whilst his performances on the pitch never lived up to the extortionate transfer fee he demanded when he returned back.

The failure of this deal was compounded by the fact that Pogba would leave Old Trafford on a free transfer in 2022, Man United burning through money in the process.

Buying Sancho for an inflated transfer fee – with hindsight – also now feels like a colossal waste of money, with the former Manchester City youth product exiled from Erik ten Hag's plans completely at this moment in time.

How much did Man United buy Sancho for?

Splashing the cash on Sancho back in the summer of 2021 – the exciting winger fresh off 20 goals and assists from 26 Bundesliga games with Borussia Dortmund in the previous season – the excessive £73m transfer paid to land his services felt warranted.

Joining in the same transfer window as ex-Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane alongside the fabled return of Cristiano Ronaldo to the Theatre of Dreams, everything pointed in the direction of a successful forthcoming campaign with Sancho leading the way as the bright spark.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho.

But, his United career hasn't ever really got off the ground with the hierarchy at the Red Devils cursing their luck that they've managed to somehow purchase another expensive dud.

It even led to Football365 journalist Jason Soutar labelling the former Dortmund star-man as a "flop" in Man United colours back in November last year, a claim that has been substantiated further by recent developments at Old Trafford.

How has Jadon Sancho performed this season for Man Utd?

Before this season got underway, Sancho was showing signs of improving in a Red Devils strip if his numbers from last season are anything to go by – scoring an encouraging six goals from 26 starts, upping his goalscoring output overall for the club to 12.

But this campaign, Sancho is goalless after only being afforded brief substitute appearances under Ten Hag.

Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho

Capped 23 times by England at senior level – not featuring under Gareth Southgate however since 2021 – the 23-year-old has been frozen out of Ten Hag's plans since a cameo off the bench versus Nottingham Forest in August.

The issue surrounding criticism of the player's work ethic in training – and his subsequent response to his manager – looks to have been the catalyst for the Dutch head coach to cut all of Sancho's game-time, with a January departure now mooted.

With his wage at Man United also coming in at an unbelievable £250k-per-week, as per Capology – making Sancho a higher earner than Lisandro Martinez by £130k, for instance – it would not be a surprise if the Red Devils severed ties with the 23-year-old in the near future

In truth, this failed transfer move leaves an even worse taste in the mouth than Pogba's fall from grace, with the latter man at least helping the club to notable silverware during his debut campaign, while enjoying a handful of standout seasons – including 2018/19 in which he contributed 22 goals and assists in 35 league games.

Sancho, by contrast, has yet to get anywhere close to such highs. With Pogba there was always a sense that the Frenchman could conjure up a moment of magic, yet with his former teammate, it has largely been a tale of woe so far.

Perhaps, for all concerned, it would be best if the forgotten man finds a new home in January.

> Confira a tabela do Brasileirão

CHEGOU E MARCOU

CRESCEU A PRESSÃO

Sky Sports man shares Newcastle injury update on "consistent" ace

Newcastle United are having to deal with a number of injuries at the moment, and a worrying update has emerged regarding one key hero at St James' Park.

Newcastle injury news

The Magpies drew 2-2 away to Wolves on Saturday evening, and while a point was no disaster, it was disappointing not to win after going ahead twice in the Premier League clash at Molineux. It has been a good start to the season for Newcastle, in many ways, but there has been a slight lack of consistency at times, with their Champions League form highlighting that, having lost 1-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund last week.

Injuries certainly haven't helped Eddie Howe at points, with the manager having to make do without a number of influential figures, whether it be the dominant Sven Botman in defence or Harvey Barnes in attack. There is now also Sandro Tonali's ban that has been added to their woes, with the 23-year-old's season over after receiving a 10-month suspension.

Newcastle host Manchester United in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, taking on the team who beat them in the final of the competition last season, and a concerning fitness update has dropped in the lead-up to the match.

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman.

Botman injury blow

Taking to X, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie confirmed that Newcastle centre-back Botman has suffered a setback in his injury recovery, relaying Howe's quotes from his pre-United press conference:

"Eddie Howe reveals Sven Botman has had a set-back in his recovery from knee injury: 'There’s an issue there. We are working through various options to try & diagnose the injury properly. Does he fall into the longer-term category? Yeah, perhaps. But we’re awaiting clarity.'"

This is hugely worrying news for anyone of a Newcastle persuasion, considering what a fantastic signing Botman has been ever since arriving from Lille last year. An influential presence at the heart of the defence, Botman's stats in the Premier League so far season speak volumes, with a 92.2% pass completion rate coming his way, not to mention averaging three clearances and 1.2 tackles per game.

Sadly, the Dutchman has only been limited to five starts in the competition, due to his keen injury, and now having him unavailable for a longer period of time could have an adverse effect on the Magpies hopes of thriving across four different competitions. While the current available options are still good, including Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles, Botman has been hailed in terms of his quality, dominance and leadership, with Howe himself lauding him in the past and saying of him:

"We’ve become accustomed to it with Sven. He’s been so consistent, regardless of who the opposition has been, he’s found ways to perform to such a high level."

The hope is that Botman's absence isn't too lengthy, especially as the busy festive period approaches, but if he ends up being out for an extended period of time, Schar and Lascelles will need to be at their absolute to make up for the loss of him,

Justin Langer's Test team to be forged out of chaos

Performers on the ‘A’ tour of India and the Victorian duo of Siddle and Finch find themselves in the frame for Pakistan series

Australia’s first Test match collective since the Newlands ball tampering scandal will be a statement about indifferent playing stocks. It will also be about the sorts of characters Justin Langer and the selectors think are capable of weathering the team’s biggest storm since the mid-1980s.Suspensions robbing Langer of Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, plus injuries ruling out Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, have created the biggest talent hole in the Australian Test side since probably 1985. Back then, they had to grapple with the retirements of Dennis Lillee, Greg Chappell and Rod Marsh, along with having to contend with mass defections to tour South Africa during Apartheid. At the time, a selection panel chaired by Lawrie Sawle, and also featuring the recently retired Chappell, pushed for long-term thinking. The approach was endorsed by the new coach Bob Simpson and the captain Allan Border, but two ignominious summers were endured before it began to bear fruit in the second half of 1987.In the faster moving, social media fried world of 2018, Langer and Cricket Australia are aware they are unlikely to get as much time to rebuild, while ongoing cultural reviews swirl around the governing body. To that end, the selectors are expected to mix youthful names with older salts previously deemed either surplus to requirements of close to it.Two well-traveled Victorians, Peter Siddle and Aaron Finch, are expected to be included, with the former’s strong record in English county cricket for Essex this year matched by the latter’s improvement as a long-form batsman in recent seasons. This after he was earlier pigeonholed as a limited overs bully susceptible to the moving ball. That question of Finch is at least balanced out by the likelihood of dry surfaces in the UAE for the series against Pakistan.Other players likely to find favour with Langer include the South Australian captain Travis Head, and the back-up seam pair of Jhye Richardson and Chris Tremain. It is less clear how Glenn Maxwell and Peter Handscomb will fare after recent batting misadventures, with the thoughtful Queensland accumulator Marnus Labuschagne believed to have made a serious claim for a batting berth with his displays for Australia A in India. The primary spin spots are set to be occupied by Nathan Lyon and Jon Holland, leaving the left-armer Ashton Agar and wrist spinner Mitch Swepson to duel over the remaining place in the squad. The Western Australia captain Mitchell Marsh and his brother Shaun can both expect to figure in the touring party, as can a noticeably fitter Usman Khawaja. The aforementioned trio are rare morsels of certainty for Langer.”Do we know the best six batsmen in Australia? The answer is ‘no’,” he told The Australian last month. “You take Smith who has got 79 hundreds, you take Warner who has got 88 hundreds — I am talking about all A-grade cricket — you take those out.”You take [out]Cameron Bancroft who you could say had just started to find his feet, he was a bit of the heartbeat of the team. You take your two most successful batsmen … there is certainly some questions.”As wicketkeeper captain, Tim Paine recently ventured to the United States alongside Langer, the team performance manager Pat Howard and the outgoing chief executive James Sutherland. Most memorably, Paine was afforded a full morning in the Wrigley Field dressing room of the Chicago Cubs, where he shared trade secrets with the likes of the catcher and 2018 All-Star Wilson Contreras while the managerial figures learned from the front office of the 2016 World Series champions. For Paine and Langer here was another lesson similar to that taken from the experience of Australian cricket in the 1980s – namely that cultural change and sustained performance improvement come largely from careful assembly of a team and organisation over time. For that reason alone, the building blocks of the UAE squad to face Pakistan will be more significant than just about any team Langer and his offsiders put together.Possible squad: Tim Paine (capt, wk), Aaron Finch, Matt Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, Chris Tremain, Jon Holland, Nathan Lyon, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Agar
