Dalot upgrade: Man Utd looking to sign “the best right wing back in the PL”

Manchester United beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday evening, and they are on the teetering edge of the top four in the Premier League.

Victory for Ruben Amorim’s side would lift United into fifth, behind Chelsea only due to an inferior goal difference. Whichever side of the fence fans sit on regarding the manager and his controversial tactics, there is no question that progress has been made after last season’s malaise.

The impending African Cup of Nations is going to see a host of Red Devils depart from their domestic duties over the next month. The right-hand side is going to take a hit, with Bryan Mbeumo, Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo all primed to depart.

Diogo Dalot may be called back into a more natural berth than he has been playing this season, out in a left wing-back role. However, the Portuguese is not the solution, and United are ready to make a move in the January market.

Man United lining up new wing-back

There have been issues pertaining to Amorim’s proposed system at Manchester United right from the get-go. Square pegs into role holes, and so on.

Dalot has struggled, with content creator Liam Canning commenting in November that the versatile defender is “becoming a worry long term”, given that he “doesn’t look like he suits the wing back role”.

Likewise, Amad has been shoehorned into a position that is not his own, and an improvement is needed on that count too.

That’s where Crystal Palace star Daniel Munoz comes in, with Caught Offside confirming Man United’s interest in the wing-back, with Chelsea and Manchester City also keen.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish claims the 29-year-old, who is contracted until 2028, is not for sale, but INEOS are ready to spend, and previous reports regarding Chelsea’s interest outline that a fee in the region of £26m could do the trick.

What Daniel Munoz would bring to Man United

A late bloomer, Munoz plied his trade with Genk in the Belgian Pro League less than two years ago, joining Crystal Palace for a smart £7m fee in January 2024.

They’ve got bang for their buck down in south London, with Munoz now recognised as being “one of the best right wing-backs in the Premier League” by the likes of one professional football scout.

As per FBref, Munoz ranks among the top 11% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goal involvements, the top 7% for tackles and the top 6% for touches in the attacking box.

His athleticism and ferocity down the right channel don’t leave much to be desired, and he would slot right into United’s starting line-up, more rounded and composed than someone like the 26-year-old Dalot.

Munoz’s ability to confidently, and without error, back his forwards up is something that United have struggled to provide this season. There is a disjointedness about Amorim’s build-up play, the system so reliant on effective wing-backs.

Dalot is clearly not the solution, but neither is Amad, a fleet-footed and snappy winger who operates deeper than he would like to serve the project.

A talented and dynamic player, Amad has performed dutifully this season, but he does not possess natural defensive instincts. He wants to get involved up top and has been caught out several times this year when defending against the transition.

This is not an issue for Munoz, who might not dribble forward much but still covers plenty of ground, his impressive statistics in front of goal telling something of his timing and decision-making. Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, after all, has hailed him as “the best wing-back in the league” for these very reasons.

The Colombian is now experienced in the Premier League and has played an instrumental part in winning silverware under Oliver Glasner’s wing. He is the real deal, and were INEOS to win the race this winter, they would sign an upgrade on not just Dalot but the out-of-position Amad too.

Amorim has a "hidden gem" who could end Mainoo's Man Utd career for good

Manchester United have a “hidden gem” in the academy who could emerge to end Kobbie Mainoo’s career at the club.

Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan revive Pakistan after Ireland's early joy

Half-centuries from Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan pushed Ireland back after they reduced Pakistan to 159 for 6 on their first day of Test cricket

The Report by Alan Gardner12-May-20185:13

#PoliteEnquiries: The greatest day in Irish Test history?

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAfter the rain, green shoots of hope. For Ireland, their bona fide first day of Test cricket could hardly have started better: two wickets inside the first hour and then four more during the afternoon to reduce Pakistan to 159 for 6. Then, however, proceedings began to turn a darker shade of green. Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf, with one previous Test between them, scored unbeaten fifties in a century stand that left Ireland ruing missed opportunities.Ashraf, Pakistan’s debutant allrounder, survived chances on 24 and 36 before raising his half-century from 52 balls; he was followed to the landmark a few minutes later by Shadab, the 19-year-old legspinner deputising for Yasir Shah. When the umpires took the players off for bad light, their partnership was worth 109 and Pakistan’s position in the match was stronger that at any other point in the day.Rain swept in soon after, washing away another 22 of the 98 scheduled overs following the complete abandonment of day one. Ireland were perhaps grateful for a chance to collect themselves and prepare to go again the morning, with the second new ball four overs away. After the anti-climax of Friday, nothing could dampen Irish spirits as William Porterfield’s team finally stepped on to the field as Test cricketers. Porterfield won the toss and Ireland soon had their first taste of success as a Test nation: both Pakistan openers removed in the space of two balls. Boyd Rankin became the first man to claim a Test wicket for Ireland (he already had one for England) when he dismissed Azhar Ali in the eighth over, squaring up Pakistan’s senior batsman for a catch to Porterfield slip.Azhar’s partner, Imam-ul-Haq, was almost removed from action without having faced a ball on debut – a hefty collision with Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien and Tyrone Kane after Azhar had called for a risky single from the first delivery of the match left Imam needing medical attention amid fears he might have suffered concussion. He was able to continue but did not make it out of single figures, trapped lbw by Tim Murtagh after a searching examination by the experienced Middlesex seamer.Pakistan were 13 for 2 and that could have been 13 for 3 from the very next delivery, but Stuart Thompson, fielding at cover, was unable to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Haris Sohail stranded down the pitch.Shadab Khan goes on the attack•Sportsfile/Getty Images

Asad Shafiq was the man who sent Haris back and it was his half-century that pushed Ireland back during the first half of the day. Shafiq played several crisp shots as he looked to stamp his mark at No. 4, having moved up the order after the retirements of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan last year, putting on 58 with Haris to steady Pakistan. Ireland’s change seamers, Tyrone Kane and Thompson, found swing but lacked control as runs began to flow.Thompson was particularly wayward to begin with, but he found his line and twice had Shafiq edging clear of the cordon. He claimed his maiden Test wicket in the second over after lunch, when Haris felt for a delivery that swung across him and steered a low catch to gully. Murtagh then struck for the second time as a Test bowler, producing a trademark outswinger to remove Babar Azam.Another counter-thrust followed, as Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed hustled singles and filched boundaries during a 49-run stand. Sarfraz edged through the slips on 7 but was typically busy, with Rankin resorting to going round the wicket and digging the ball in short (call it “Boyd-yline” bowling); the tactic brought the breakthrough when Shafiq was tucked up trying to pull and sent a head-high catch straight to square leg.But with Ireland sensing an opportunity to bowl Pakistan out for less than 200, Shadab and Ashraf combined to turn the innings around. Ashraf had two significant let-offs: Gary Wilson could not get his fingers under a low chance at first slip, when Murtagh nibbled the ball away, while another thick edge off Rankin evaded Wilson after Niall O’Brien dived across him. That came in an over which cost 18 as Ashraf brought up his fifty, demonstrating a penchant for lashing anything loose through the off side.Shadab had been the more attacking to begin with but he settled down to reach his own half-century from 89 balls. Ireland had seized the moment on their historic day, but two green shoots in Pakistan’s youthful line-up prevented them from seizing the initiative entirely.

15 Sir Alex Ferguson pupils who became managers – ranked

Across Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-year Manchester United career, the 13-time Premier League winner has tutored a plethora of talented players and coaches.

Many of his former players have become managers themselves, like Wayne Rooney for example, who was appointed Birmingham City boss this week.

So today at Football FanCast, we've decided to list and rank 15 of Sir Alex's pupils who became managers.

They'll be ordered by win percentage…

15 Paul Scholes – 27%

Kicking off the list is 11-time Premier League winner Paul Scholes, whose managerial record has been far less fruitful than his playing career.

However, in fairness, it must be noted that he has only taken charge of 11 games throughout his brief managerial career, winning three of those.

The legendary United midfielder got his first gig in the dugout with Oldham at the beginning of 2019 but resigned after seven games due to 'interference' from the chairman.

Scholes' second role came in October 2020, when he took over as caretaker manager at Salford City – the club he part-owns. His record at the Ammies was pretty decent, winning two of his four games in charge and only conceding defeat once.

14 Wayne Rooney – 28%

United's all-time top goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, has opted against the popular route of a career in the media – post-retirement – and instead has chosen a life in the dugout.

Rooney has certainly not had it easy during his fledgling managerial career, having first received his breakthrough with Derby County, who were in dire straights on and off the pitch.

The Rams entered administration during his 19-month reign and were handed points deductions, leaving the Liverpool-born head coach with a mammoth task of avoiding relegation from the Championship.

Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, Derby suffered relegation to the third tier in May 2022, and Rooney departed for D.C United that summer.

Having managed in the MLS for 15 months, the former Everton forward is now back in England with Birmingham City, where he'll be hoping to improve his pretty underwhelming 28% win rate.

13 Mark Hughes – 38%

Mark Hughes was part of Sir Alex's first title-winning side in 1993 and was a fabulous servant for the Scotsman.

Having been inspired by the former United boss, the Welshman decided to try his hand at management following his retirement in 2002 and he's gone on to take charge of a whopping 690 matches.

Though, across his eight different jobs, the 59-year-old's win rate doesn't exactly make for good reading. He was recently sacked by League Two outfit Bradford City, leaving the club in 18th after a run of three wins from 11 games.

Perhaps his most notable role was with Stoke, where he managed 200 games, guiding the club to three consecutive ninth-placed Premier League finishes.

12 Roy Keane – 38%

The former United skipper began his managerial career with Sunderland, helping the club return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Keane's second season saw his side retain their top-flight status, finishing 15th, three points clear of the drop zone. However, he opted to resign mid-way through his third campaign after a poor run of results, leaving the North East club in 18th.

A job at Ipswich beckoned for the Irishman shortly after departing the Black Cats, and after 20 months in charge, having won 29 of his 81 matches, he was sacked by Town.

Since Keane's Portman Road exit in January 2011, he hasn't returned to management, though speaking on the 'Stick to Football' podcast, he admitted a desire to get back in the dugout.

11 Mark Robins – 40%

The current Coventry City boss, Mark Robins, is adored by the Sky Blue faithful. Across his six-and-a-half-year second spell at the club, the former United forward has overseen two promotions and stabilised the club during unsettling times off the field.

Coventry reached the Championship play-off final last term before suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Luton Town but his side appears well-placed to once again challenge for a spot in the Premier League this season.

Robins is widely considered as one of the best managers in the second tier and is certainly the best pupil of Sir Alex's up to this point.

10 Paul Ince – 40%

Paul Ince hasn't exactly inspired many with his managerial abilities.

His win rate of 40% could be a lot worse though, and his first spell as MK Dons manager was probably his most successful role, winning an impressive 35 of his 55 matches in charge, prompting Premier League side Blackburn to appoint him as manager.

Ince only lasted 21 matches in post at Rovers, having won just six of his 21 games before receiving the sack.

9 Gordon Strachan – 41%

Gordon Strachan has taken charge of just shy of 600 games throughout his 27-year career as a manager, with his first role coming at Coventry City.

A trophy-laden spell in Glasgow saw him win three Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic whilst collecting three domestic cup trophies.

Following his departure from The Hoops in 2009, the former United and Leeds midfielder managed Middlesbrough and Scotland.

Strachan now operates as a technical director for Dundee F.C.

8 Darren Ferguson – 43%

Whilst Darren Ferguson didn't play under Sir Alex, he of course received an extensive amount of tutelage from the former United boss by being his son.

Darren hasn't reached the heights his father did, but he has enjoyed a successful career in the lower leagues of English football, most notably with Peterborough United.

He's managed an astounding 483 games for the Posh across four different spells and is currently in post with the League One outfit.

The 51-year-old's side currently sit fifth after winning six of their opening 12 matches this season.

7 Steve McClaren – 45%

Steve McClaren was Sir Alex's assistant for 149 games and was on the touchline at the Nou Camp when the Red Devils beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final to complete the treble.

McClaren has managed a whole host of clubs and was even in charge of England at one point, though that tenure was short-lived after his side failed to qualify for EURO 2008.

The veteran coach now serves as an assistant to Erik ten Hag and has been in the post since the Dutchman's arrival last summer.

6 Ryan Giggs – 50%

Now we get into the impressive win rate territory of 50% and beyond.

The Ex-United winger, Ryan Giggs, took caretaker charge at Old Trafford following David Moyes' sacking in April 2014. The Welshman managed the remaining four games of the season, winning two, drawing one and losing one.

His first permanent role came with the Wales national team in 2018, managing a total of 24 games and winning 12, before stepping down due to a court trial, which has since been dropped.

Giggs' return to management is close, according to reports.

Renshaw continues to impress at Somerset

Matt Renshaw’s third Championship hundreds continued his excellent stand-in role for fellow Australian Cameron Bancroft

ECB Reporters Network09-Jun-2018
ScorecardMatt Renshaw’s third Specsavers County Championship century in eight innings for Somerset was the feature of a closely-fought opening day of the match with leaders Nottinghamshire at Taunton. The Aussie left-hander hit 106 off 171 balls, with 12 fours and 2 sixes, before becoming a third victim for off-spinner Matthew Carter as the hosts ran up 307 for 7 after winning the toss. Skipper Tom Abell contributed 57 and Steve Davies 59 not out.Off-spinner Matthew Carter was the most successful Notts bowler with four for 81. But Luke Fletcher bowled better than his figures of one for 39 suggested.Renshaw has scored 411 Championship runs for Somerset at an average of 58.7, making his early departure due to an Australia A tour call-up in August all the more galling for the county. The 22-year-old marked his last home appearance with an important knock. He and Eddie Byrom faced some testing opening overs, particularly from Fletcher, whose initial eight-over spell saw him concede only 11 runs.A half-century stand for the first wicket took 21.3 overs and in the 24th, with the total on 62, Byrom was lbw for 14 pushing forward to Steven Mullaney.By lunch Somerset had progressed to 80 for one, with Renshaw having brought up a 77-ball fifty. Notts struck again with the total on 117 when George Bartlett, on 29, edged Carter to slip where Ross Taylor took a low catch.James Hildreth’s fine start to the season was interrupted when, having made only a single, he edged a back-foot defensive shot off Carter to give Taylor another catch.Renshaw went to three figures off 165 balls with a nick through the slips off Mullaney, not the first bit of fortune he had enjoyed. It followed scores of 101 not out against Worcestershire and 112 against Yorkshire in the opening two Championship games. He won’t have been happy with the manner of his dismissal, bowled trying to launch Carter back over his head with the total on 176.Carter likes playing at Taunton. He marked his Notts debut at the ground with match figures of 10 for 195 in 2015.Abell and Davies saw Somerset to tea at 211 for four and the skipper brought up a 117-ball half-century in the final session before falling to the second new ball, caught at first slip by Riki Wessels off Fletcher. At 258 for five, the home side could not feel comfortable. It became 288 for six when Lewis Gregory aimed a slog sweep at Carter, with his side needing a solid finish to the day, and was bowled off a glove for 16.Notts capitalised on that mistake, 23-year-old seamer Matt Milnes, on his Championship debut, bowling Roelof van der Merwe for a duck.Davies went to a composed 107-ball fifty, with 5 fours, and Dom Bess, promoted above Craig Overton in the order following his impressive batting displays for England, was with him at the close.

Hetmyer, spinners fire West Indies to series-levelling win

With seven to defend, Jason Holder bowled a spectacular final over, conceding just four off it to keep his team alive in the three-match series

The Report by Mohammad Isam25-Jul-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsGetty Images

Joseph gets demerit point for send-off

Alzarri Joseph has earned ICC sanctions for his send-off to Anamul Haque during the second ODI in Guyana. The fast bowler has received an official reprimand and one demerit point after match referee Chris Broad found him guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC code of conduct.
Joseph was found to have violated article 2.1.7 of the code, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match”. He gestured towards the dressing room after dismissing Anamul in the third over of Bangladesh’s chase.
After the match, Joseph admitted to the offence and accepted the sanctions imposed on him. There was no need for a formal hearing. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

West Indies captain Jason Holder bowled one of the best last overs in recent memory to pull his team out of a hole. With seven to defend, Holder conceded just four runs, as West Indies stayed alive, levelling the series with a three-run win.Holder started the over by removing Mushfiqur Rahim, who swatted a full-toss straight to deep midwicket, bringing back memories of Bangladesh’s 2016 meltdown against India in Bengaluru.Holder then contained Mosaddek Hossain and Mashrafe Mortaza to just four runs off the next five balls, and roared the loudest, having extracted sweet retribution after being tonked for 62 runs from his nine previous overs. The match had swung Bangladesh’s way after Mushfiqur and Sabbir took 10 runs off the 47th over, bowled by Keemo Paul, before Holder went for 13 in the next over. With 14 required from the last two overs, the pair took six runs off the first five balls, struggling to find boundaries, which had been a theme in Bangladesh’s innings after the Powerplay. Sabbir got out to the final ball of the 49th over, which had left Mushfiqur with eight to get off the last over.A lot of the credit must also go to Shimron Hetmyer’s superb 93-ball 125 that pulled West Indies out of a rut and hauled them to a competitive 271 in 49.3 overs. His 103-run fifth wicket stand with Rovman Powell, who contributed a 67-ball 44, was instrumental in their turnaround. Hetmyer had to take the attack to Bangladesh in the last 10 overs almost single-handedly, hitting six of his seven sixes during that period. When Bangladesh began, Anamul Haque gave them a blazing start with his two sixes and as many fours, but Alzarri Joseph bowled him in the third over. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan maintained that early momentum, however, giving Bangladesh to their fastest fifty in ODIs in 4.4 overs. The pair hit four more boundaries – through point, cover and mid-off – as the visitors sped to 79 for 1 after ten overs. Then, the picture changed dramatically, as over the next 20 overs, Bangladesh scored only 67 runs. Both Shakib and Tamim needed to use the review to survive lbw decisions, while only getting three fours during this period.Bishoo then removed Tamim immediately after being introduced in the 25th over, with the opening batsman stumped a long way out of his crease. Shakib also got out to a poor shot, hitting a wide Nurse delivery down point’s throat, after having made 56 off 72 balls, with five fours. Tamim had scored 54 off 85 balls.Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur kept their calm despite the required run-rate crossing seven per over after 35 overs, keeping them ticking and taking them closer. But after adding 87 runs in 15.5 overs, miscommunication gave West Indies a breakthrough, and set up a nervous last five overs. Mahmudullah, who made 39 having survived a dropped catch on 17, was stranded a long way from the non-striker’s end, after Mushfiqur was hit by a Holder short ball. He struck two sixes in his 51-ball stay, but it was an unusually slow innings.Mushfiqur, though, batted more forcefully, hitting fours with a scoop and a pull, apart from clipping Joseph for a six in the 44th over. But it all fell apart for Bangladesh in the last two overs.Earlier when West Indies batted, for the second match in a row, they were slowed down by a build-up of dot balls. Both openers Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle fell leg-before to Mashrafe Mortaza and Mehidy Hasan Miraz respectively. They hit six boundaries between them, but were unable to raise West Indies’ run-rate during their short stays.Shai Hope didn’t go anywhere with his 25 off 43 balls, before giving Sabbir Rahman an easy catch at cover after Shakib Al Hasan outfoxed him with a delivery that stopped on Hope. When Jason Mohammed fell in the 24th over to Rubel Hossain, who again struck in his first over, the home side were staring at a sub-par total.Hetmyer and Powell were focused largely on picking singles in their rebuilding process, hitting only a four each between the 20th and 30th overs. Fifty-eight runs came from the next ten overs as they both got into their groove going into the slog overs. Hetmyer struck three more sixes in the 41st, 42nd and 43rd overs, two of them down the ground; his fourth six should have actually been a catch, but a backpedalling Shakib saw the ball burst through his hands. Hetmyer was on 79 at the time. After Powell’s fall, the West Indies lower-order followed suit quickly. It was only Hetmyer’s three late sixes – twice off a 22-run Rubel over – that pushed West Indies to good total.By the time he was the last wicket to fall – run-out trying to take a second run in the final over – Hetmyer had 16 twos, apart from his seven sixes and three fours. Bangladesh bowled well in patches, but lost the plot at different times, like in the 48th over, when Rubel, among their more experienced bowlers, was smacked for 22.He had otherwise bowled well to break the century stand during a key passage to pick up one of his three wickets. Shakib and Mustafizur Rahman took two wickets while there was one each for Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mashrafe Mortaza, who started very well with the ball once again.
