Australia quick James Pattinson has signed a two-year deal with Brisbane Heat for the Big Bash League. Pattinson, who had been with Melbourne Renegades between 2013 and 2017, missed the entire last season because of a back stress fracture – the fourth such time he had been diagnosed with the injury in more or less exactly the same spot in his back.He subsequently underwent a surgery in New Zealand late last year, the same procedure that helped prolong the careers of former New Zealand quick Shane Bond, and current players Matt Henry, Hamish Bennett and Corey Anderson.”I’m feeling very good physically after the surgery and I’m looking forward to getting back into some bowling during the winter,” Pattinson said. “The facilities at Allan Border Field are second to none so that will also be very helpful as I build towards the coming season.”Pattinson hasn’t played a competitive match since July last year but Daniel Vettori, the Heat coach, believed that his workload could be managed like how his former New Zealand team-mate and former assistant at the Heat, Shane Bond’s had been done.”Knowing how Shane and other bowlers have managed their career in similar circumstances will help us provide the right environment for him to deliver his best,” Vettori said. “As a senior player, James will also have the chance to do likewise and mentor some of our up-and-coming bowlers.”I’m sure the Heat fans will make him very welcome when he arrives and we’re looking forward to some more exciting matches with James in our squad.”Pattinson bolsters a pace attack that includes Mark Steketee, Brendan Doggett, and allrounder Ben Cutting. Pattinson said he was feeling “very good physically” and that he was looking forward to return to action.

Everton have finally come to life it seems after a torrid start to the Premier League season, as once again their lack of a striker hampered them in the opening fixtures.
Despite carving open Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers on numerous occasions, accumulating a 2.73 and 1.34 expected goal tally in those games respectively, the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin unsurprisingly proved essential.
They would lose 1-0 on both occasions, spurring Sean Dyche to act fast in the market.
Acquiring Udinese forward Beto for a whopping £30m, already this is proving to be a shrewd investment, as not only does it offer that crucial focal point up top, but also it has given the England international enough slack to return from injury better than ever.
Two goals in his last two games emphasise such success, which could now help them towards a campaign hopefully devoid of the relegation stresses of the previous two.
However, if reports are to be believed, the Toffees could have actually acquired a number nine with quality that surpasses both their current strike partnership, and the youth to dominate for the next decade.
After all, there is not a team on earth that would not jump at the opportunity to have Erling Haaland on their side nowadays.
Did Everton nearly sign Erling Haaland?
Although Calvert-Lewin has enjoyed some impressive goalscoring spells during his tenure on Merseyside, having notched 16 league goals under Carlo Ancelotti during the 2020/21 campaign, it cannot really come close to the levels reached by the Norway international ever since he burst onto the scene in Austria.
Again, whilst their new Portuguese forward's tally of ten in Serie A last season was admirable, the Manchester City man stands out above all else.
Manchester City's Erling BrautHaalandcelebrates with the match ball after the match
So, with the suggestion that he very nearly joined the Goodison Park outfit circulating, it must mark a frustrating report for the numerous managers to have been thwarted since the departure of Romelu Lukaku.
As noted by the Daily Mail, former Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson recalled a 2018 visit to Finch Farm in which he was shown a video of an 18-year-old Haaland tearing it up for his hometown club.
However, then chief executive Robert Elstone delivered a crushing blow by suggesting that the £7m commanded would have been too expensive.
To make matters worse, some haggling with the Norwegian club Molde made them willing to then sell for a reduced £5m, which was again knocked back, deemed too much for a player who would seemingly not have made an instant first-team impact.
Although that line of thought can be appreciated, it is also worth noting that, around the reported time frame of their interest in the 23-year-old, the club was spending with ridiculous freedom. Across the 2017/18 campaign, Ronald Koeman would unload a mouth-watering €203.2m (£175.77m), yet could not spare a fraction to invest in their future.

And what an investment it could have been, given how he would go on to thrive for RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and now the Citizens.
In Austria he would notch 29 goals in 27 appearances, assisting a further seven, and upon moving to Germany, increase these figures even more despite the increase in standard. Improving his creativity, the hulking marksman would add 23 assists to his 86 goals, spread impressively across just 89 appearances.
He was ready to take his final step to the apex of world football, and given their steady rise alongside him, the Etihad seemed a natural fit.
However, few could possibly have predicted just how dominant the forward would instantly become, acquired for a supreme bargain reaching just £51m.
How many goals has Erling Haaland scored for Man City?
Whilst many might gawk at those ludicrous goalscoring figures across lesser divisions across Europe, it was expected that upon moving to statistically the toughest league on the continent, there could be a drop-off.
However, it could be argued that Haaland has never been so in-form, having broken all manner of records last season whilst spearheading Pep Guardiola's push for, and subsequent winning of an unprecedented treble.
Claiming the Premier League title, alongside the FA Cup and Champions League marked an unparalleled return for a debut season, made even sweeter as he would break the division's record for most goals scored in a single term.
Already across his short career in Manchester, he boasts 60 goals in just 62 appearances, with his 11 assists taking him over a goal contribution per game. Haaland always scores, and as such the words of pundit Rory Smith cannot be disputed: "Haaland's different. Haaland is a generational talent."
Unsurprisingly, his Spanish manager has rushed to laud him too, noting: "It is unbelievable how many goals he has scored – so many important goals to help us win games. He is a unique person, as a player but also the person is special. He deserved the guard of honour."
To truly emphasise the exponential growth the 26-cap ace has enjoyed over the last few years, it is worth noting where his value lies given Everton passed up that £5m opportunity only five years ago.
What is Erling Haaland's market value now?
CIES Football Observatory offers a fair estimation and unsurprisingly rates him among the most expensive players on the planet. Seemingly worth more than Bukayo Saka and Kylian Mbappe, and alongside the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, an astounding €250m (£215m) figure has been placed on his head. Realistically, few could argue with it.
Given the goalscoring woes suffered on Merseyside in recent years, as their failure to find a natural heir to Lukaku has haunted them for so long, at last they seem to be in a good place, with Beto and Calvert-Lewin feeding off one another and pushing each other to reach new heights. Then, should one be struck down, a more than capable alternative is waiting to take the opportunity presented.
However, there is likely no striker that will come close to Haaland in this generation, and as such it will be a mistake that the Toffees are forever made to rue.
What's worse is that this is only the beginning. There is no limit to the heights he can reach and the records he will inevitably break. A true freak of nature, but deemed £5m too expensive by Everton.
On the eve of the tournament’s opener against Mumbai Indians, the Chennai Super Kings coach ruled out any jitters among players owing to the team’s two-year suspension

Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming is not worried about his team returning to the IPL after a long gap or about the reason behind the team’s suspension having any kind of effect on the players. On the eve of the tournament’s opener against Mumbai Indians on Saturday, Fleming spoke lucidly about the team having the usual “nerves” because of the two-year gap and stated that the players would not carry any kind of “scars” because they didn’t have anything to do with the events that led to the team’s suspension two years ago.The Harbhajan crossover
With all the attention on Saturday’s IPL opener being on Chennai Super Kings returning after a two-year suspension, they will have the services of the experienced Harbhajan Singh who will turn out for a side other than Mumbai Indians for the first time in the IPL. Harbhajan was bought by Super Kings for INR 2 crore this year and will have more experience than anyone in that side when playing at Wankhede Stadium. “It’ll be a game filled with emotions for me given that this was my home ground for the first 10 seasons,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying by the Super Kings website. “It wasn’t one season but 10 years and obviously I know the kind of cricket that they (Mumbai) play, but then it’s no secret because with every team playing each other over the years, each knows how they approach their game, the brand of cricket that they play. Obviosuly having been a part of the think-tank, I guess I know more than most about how MI play.”
“I think we’ve prepared well. Just a lot of nerves around but no more than normal,” he said. “Players want to get into it and we’ve had the best part of 12 days leading into the competition, so the feeling is one of we’re ready to play. We’ve done all we can, but there’s still the element of getting into the tournament and getting the team selections right. The general feeling is we’re just ready to go.”It (the suspension) doesn’t have an influence on the players. Players didn’t do anything to be scarred from, so there’s no scars there.”When Super Kings returned to the auction table after two years, the average age of their side after the first day was 33. They made up for it on the second day of the auction by purchasing eight uncapped players, and Fleming explained why he was banking on experience.”The notion that we bought an old side on day one of the auction was right,” he stated. “Day two was filled with a lot of young players. I value experience, we always have and if the professional player is in shape and performing well, I think they’re a valuable asset. Not often do you see young players come out and make a mark. People talk a lot about it but very rarely do young players shoot the lights out.”I’m not sure when a young player came out and was the top run-scorer. Rashid Khan – you get some exceptions, Washington Sundar, but there’s only a handful whereas experienced players play major parts in the whole tournament so that’s why I value experience. There’s also about the quality of player, like [Dwayne] Bravo is still competing well, [Shane] Watson’s competing well, Harbhajan [Singh] has a great skillset, [MS] Dhoni is a fine leader. So, the players we’ve picked, I don’t think they’re spent by any means. It’s a year-by-year proposition, and this year I think they look very good.”On Saturday night, Super Kings will return by taking on the same opponents they last played in the tournament, and finished runners-up to in 2015. Three year ago it was at Eden Gardens where they faced off and this time they play in Mumbai’s fortress, the Wankhede Stadium, where the pitch has a little extra pace and bounce compared to the average Indian pitch. The visitors, however, have a fairly inexperienced seam-bowling attack apart from Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo. Lungi Ngidi and Mark Wood joined the squad on Thursday night and only one of them is likely to make it to the XI. What Super Kings have in plenty is spin options in Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Imran Tahir and Karn Sharma. Fleming conceded that the pitch wouldn’t help the spinners much but wasn’t too concerned about it.”Lungi Ngidi and Mark Wood are both good. Shane Watson is still very good with the new ball, Dwayne Bravo is very canny,” he said. “And the other guys can still bowl even if there’s not excessive turn. So, we’re just looking for smarter technique and stack up in all different scenarios. It’s not just being spin-friendly as indicated, we’ve also got seam bowlers who we also think can do a pretty good job.”Just trying to read the conditions is always a challenge here. I guess looking at their team, they’ve no standout spin options. I say this with the greatest of respect for them. In terms of the name, Krunal Pandya is there, as we’ve got three or four. But we’ve also got the pace options that can accommodate this kind of a challenge.”Mumbai may face the opposite problem when they visit Chennai but that is still three weeks away. For now, Super Kings need to shake off those nerves, get their yellow jersey back on, and take on familiar opponents who are also the defending champions.
Malinga had earlier said he would not be returning to Sri Lanka until the end of the IPL, where he is serving as Mumbai Indians’ bowling mentor

Lasith Malinga’s international future has been put in further doubt after SLC told the 34-year old fast bowler that the only way he could get back into the team was by playing domestic cricket.Malinga was up for selection in Sri Lanka’s domestic Inter-Provincial one-day tournament, which is set to begin on May 2. However, prior to the announcement of squads, he stated that he would not be returning to the island until the end of the IPL, where he is serving as Mumbai Indians’ bowling mentor.”The selectors wanted him back, and he has to play domestic cricket according to them,” SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala said. “We’re playing our white-ball tournament, and 50-over and T20. I’m sure before the next international engagement which is South Africa and then the Asia Cup and so forth, he needs to play T20 games and 50 overs. If Lasith is not playing a domestic tournament, the selectors will have to make a call.”Despite performing well in T20s domestically over the last few months, picking up 17 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 11.35, Malinga was overlooked for the Nidahas Trophy in March. In fact, he hasn’t played for Sri Lanka since last September, having returned from a lengthy injury layoff at the start of 2017.Since then, his ODI form – 10 wickets in 13 ODIs at an average of 62 – has been patchy. He has had a good run in T20s, picking up 12 wickets in six games at 16.50. Malinga believes this, along with his domestic form, warrants a return to the national team starting with Sri Lanka’s home series against South Africa in July.SLC CEO Ashley De Silva assured Malinga was still in the minds of selectors, but said that his future inclusion hinged on the fast bowler proving himself domestically.”He has made himself available for selection and selectors have also picked him to play in one of the provinces,” de Silva said. “He hasn’t given any indication that he would be retiring, neither have the selectors given him an indication that they would not be considering him. So therefore if he performs well domestically he will be considered.”
The 2026 and 2030 editions of the FIFA World Cup will have an additional 16 teams as a staggering 48 nations will battle it out for the reputable international trophy.
It is already confirmed that the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup, and the rights for the 2030 edition have just been announced…
Who won the rights to host the 2030 World Cup?
Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host the 2030 World Cup but Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will stage the opening three games of the tournament. FIFA elected to award the opening games to the three South American nations as part of the tournament’s 100th anniversary
It will be Morocco and Portugal's first time hosting a World Cup, with the former having five unsuccessful bids dating back to 1994 whilst the latter saw two previous bids dismissed. Spain haven't hosted the tournament since 1982.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed the six host nations on Wednesday afternoon.
“The FIFA Council agreed unanimously that the only bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2030 will be the joint bid of Morocco, Portugal and Spain.
"Two continents – Africa and Europe – united not only in a celebration of football but also in providing unique social and cultural cohesion. What a great message of peace, tolerance and inclusion.
“In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents — Africa, Europe and South America — six countries — Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay — welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup," Infantino said.
The opening ceremony will still take place in either Spain, Portugal or Morocco.
It will be the first time a World Cup is held across three continents and all of the six nations will be automatically advanced through to the group stages of the tournament.
Who was bidding to host the 2030 World Cup?
Ukraine was due to join Portugal and Spain in their World Cup hosting proposal, however, due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, the Eastern European country had to pull the plug on their dreams of welcoming some of the world’s best international squads into their borders.
After the recent success of the 2022 edition of the competition hosted in Qatar, fellow Middle Eastern nation Saudi Arabia wanted to see if they could top the success of their neighbours.
Saudi Arabia was one of the best-supported nations during the last World Cup along with England and the USA, which is a strong indication that the country's population would be very interested in seeing the tournament take place in their home country.
Despite finishing bottom of their group and not making it to the knockout stages, the Green Falcons shocked the world as they were the only team to beat eventual champions Argentina, which does show they have some quality among their ranks.
Saudi Arabia did plan to submit an offer for the rights to host the 2030 World Cup in a joint bid along with Egypt and Greece. The Middle Eastern nation has since reportedly withdrawn from the bidding process and will look to host in 2034 instead, though nothing has been confirmed by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
They look like they are too busy to host a World Cup for the time being, as the government-backed PIF (Public Investment Fund) looks to splash the cash in domestic club football before they start thinking about opening their bank account on the world stage.
The PIF have majority control over Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, with the four clubs having all spent handsomely in the summer – recruiting some world-class players in the process.
The PIF’s clubs spent a whopping £635m during the recent summer transfer window, with renowned names like Neymar and Sadio Mane swapping Europe for a nice payday under the sun in the Middle East as Saudi Arabia looks to disrupt world football.
England were beaten by Russia in the bid for the 2018 edition, and have since returned to the negotiation table alongside the rest of the UK and Ireland – only for them to withdraw at the start of 2022.
The five nations have instead targeted the UEFA 2028 European Championship as a competition that they would like to host instead, as it would offer them a similar level of income.
A statement from the associations read: "Hosting a UEFA Euro offers a similar return on investment, with the European tournament carrying a far lower delivery cost and the potential of the benefits being realised sooner.
"It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Euro 2028 and to welcome all of Europe.
"It would also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the true impact of hosting a world-class football tournament by driving positive change and leaving a lasting legacy across our communities."
Spain, Portugal and Morocco: Which stadiums are potential venues?
Spain announced their 15-stadium shortlist last year for potential venues, with only a fraction being selected for the official competition due to Morocco joining the bid.
All stadiums that are eligible to host World Cup matches must have a minimum capacity of 40,000, with all shortlisted stadiums under the required number of seats able to be expanded.
Below are the shortlisted venues in Spain and Portugal, along with potential stadiums that could be used in Morocco:

Infantino confirmed the opening game will be staged at the Estadio Centenario in Uruguay, which has a maximum capacity of 60,000.
The stadium is set to make an iconic return to the competition as it was built in 1930 for the first-ever World Cup, while some iconic stadiums such as Boca Juniors’ 54,000-capacity La Bombonera failed to make the cut.
Each nation appeared at the 76th CONMEBOL Ordinary Congress as a video was presented showing all the potential venues that could be used.
