Arsenal Should Regret Not Signing £90m Monster

Arsenal's recent form has seen the Premier League title slip somewhat out of their grasp, as they relinquished the driving seat to the omnipresent and unstoppable Manchester City.

Having led the division for most of the season, three draws on the run have relinquished six points, as their biggest names have wilted under the pressure of this loss of form.

Whilst there were a few standout poor performers, Thomas Partey marked the biggest downturn in form as the Ghanaian went from one of their key assets to anonymous overnight.

Often an impenetrable force in the engine room, offering a metronomic presence to keep the Gunners constantly in control, the 29-year-old hid when Mikel Arteta needed him most.

This downturn in form is somewhat blurred by the 7.3 rated performances either side of a 6.1 showing at West Ham United.

thomas-partey-arsenal-moises-caicedo

In reality, all three were akin to that latter display, as against Liverpool the midfielder's 81% pass accuracy left them scrambling for possession, and against Southampton he was dribbled past four times; not to mention that wild shot he took on from all of 30 yards with just seconds left of added time at 3-3.

Therefore, it draws intrigue as to whether Arsenal had signed Moises Caicedo in January, as they tried so hard to do, would Partey have taken his foot off the gas so aggressively? Had the Ecuadorian sealed his dream move to the Emirates, the Premier League could still be theirs to lose.

How has Moises Caicedo played this season?

It is a testament to the £15k-per-week maestro given how he conducted himself during the transfer saga that would not come to fruition. Politely asking for his move, in being denied it the 21-year-old has kept his head down and continued thriving for Brighton and Hove Albion.

This has led to an average Sofascore rating of 7.18, which is actually narrowly better than Arsenal's defensive midfield enforcer. This figure is upheld by a consistent stream of fine showings, where he has recorded 3.2 tackles, 1.2 key passes and an 89% pass accuracy per game this season.

Such domineering midfield displays led journalist Jonas Adnan Giæver to brand him an "absolute monster", with pundit Steve Nicol agreeing: "Well, Caicedo. He’s perfect."

Had he been a part of Arteta's squad, as a fine option to compete with or even displace either of his midfielders, perhaps they would not have experienced such a disappointing collapse against teams they really should have beaten.

It was not for the want of trying, as Arsenal saw a reported two bids rejected before focusing their attention towards Jorginho, but perhaps had they pushed just a little bit harder for the £90m man, the priceless Premier League title could have still been set to return to the Emirates.

Rangers Could Replace Kent With "Next Level" Dynamo

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale is already eyeing up players ahead of next season, and a Championship winger is currently in his sights for a potential move to the Ibrox side.

What’s the latest on Chris Willock to Rangers?

Beale is looking at securing a cut-price deal for Queens Park Rangers winger Chris Willock this summer as he is keen on a reunion with the 25-year-old, according to the Daily Record.

QPR have an option to trigger an extended 12-month deal as his current contract ends this summer, but the Gers could either land him on the cheap or even for free – which could mark some excellent business from Beale.

Could Chris Willock replace Ryan Kent at Rangers?

It’s clear that Beale will require several attacking reinforcements this summer as Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are both out of contract at the end of the season. With Kent attracting interest from Burnley, the manager appears to be delving into the transfer market early to plan for his departure.

Willock, a former Arsenal starlet before moving abroad to join Benfica in 2017, certainly has talent, and he could be an ideal candidate to replace Kent if he does move on from the Light Blues.

Beale knows him well too, having coached him for a few months at the start of the season during his spell as QPR boss, lauding the player for his performances back in September, saying: “He (Willock) is in fantastic form at the minute.

“He is an excellent player, you look at his CV we know we’re fortunate to have him at QPR.

“I think he can play at the next level, he just has to make little adjustments.”

Suggesting he can play at the next level means a move to Ibrox wouldn’t faze him, and if he could repeat his feats with QPR over the previous 18 months north of the border, then Willock may well hit that 'next level'

Across 26 Championship matches this term, the winger has scored six goals and grabbed two assists, and although not as impressive as the 18 goal contributions he had the season before, there are still a few matches to go.

Kent has netted just three goals in 43 appearances this term, a worrying tally considering how much the club depend on him as a main goal threat.

Willock has also completed a higher percentage of successful dribbles than Kent this season (62% to 46%) and also scores more frequently than the Gers’ winger, netting every 273 minutes compared to 810 minutes for the 26-year-old.

We think the 5 foot 10 dynamo would be a worthwhile addition to the Rangers squad as Beale continues his rebuild and his statistics from the last couple of seasons suggest that if he was slotted into a better team, he could improve his attacking metrics with ease.

Claims Andrea Radrizzani Won’t Sell Leeds

YouTuber Conor McGilligan claimed that majority owner Andrea Radrizzani won't leave Leeds United even if they get relegated.

What's the latest news on Leeds and Radrizzani?

It's been a hectic few days after the Whites last played in the Premier League game. Indeed, after losing to Bournemouth 4-1, that seems to have sparked chaos behind the scenes.

First of all, Radrizzani admitted he was "broken" and accepted responsibility for the club's terrible form. Since then, as per Fabrizio Romano, it's been decided that Javi Gracia will be sacked and replaced by Sam Allardyce. On top of that, however, director of football Victor Orta has left the club by mutual consent.

Amid all this mess, Leeds are strong candidates to be relegated as they sit 17th in the league but level on points with Nottingham Forest below them.

While speaking about it all on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan insisted that Radrizzani would remain at the club for financial reasons even if they were to go down.

He said (4:19): "I do think Radrizzani will still remain owner of Leeds United when Leeds do go down.

"Because I think he will want to revitalise, he will want to make some of that money back via parachute payments, player sales.

“But he has got to get this next appointment as director of football right. Because, for me, it shows that Radrizzani isn't clued up on many bits when it comes to football, hence why he gave so much power to Victor Orta.”

Will Radrizzani sell Leeds?

It is expected that Leeds’ chairman Radrizzani and majority shareholder will sell to 49ers Enterprises in the near future but it remains unclear when exactly that will happen.

As per The Athletic, the 49ers hold an option to acquire the Premier League club in January 2024 but in their report also claim "figures familiar with the deal and the discussions around it believe it will proceed by this summer, if not sooner."

If it is to happen sooner, that would potentially require a negotiation on the final selling fee. And this figure would likely drop if the Whites are relegated, so Radrizzani may be reluctant to immediately let go of his asset in that instance – especially as player sales and parachute payments can help him recoup some money, just as McGilligan explains.

In the meantime, however, it seems very important that the chairman gets things right regarding the next director of football at Leeds. After all, if they do drop out of the Premier League and can't get back up immediately, his asset will seriously diminish in value even more.

Arsenal’s remaining fixtures after win over Newcastle

Arsenal have three games remaining between them and potential Premier League glory in the next few weeks, with the Gunners having it all do against current champions Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta's side have enjoyed a season to treasure to date, but have recently surrendered their hold on top spot. However, they have won both their games since losing to City in late April, and will be looking to take the fight for the title down to the wire.

Their weekend victory over third-placed Newcastle United secured a top-two finish for the first time since 2015/16, and now only have City to worry about as they the chase an unlikely title triumph.

Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Wolves await the Gunners in the run-in – here is how Football FanCast expects the Gunners to get on as the season nears its conclusion…

Arsenal fixtures 14 May: Brighton (h) 20 May: Nottingham Forest (a) 28 May: Wolves (h) Arsenal v Brighton

gabriel-martinelli-arsenal-mikel-arteta-premier-league

This may have looked a trickier test on paper a number of weeks ago, but the events of the last few days might have changed the perception of the task that awaits the Gunners this weekend.

Indeed, Arteta's men brushed Newcastle aside in one of their more daunting tests of the run-in, while Brighton were comprehensively humbled at home to relegation battlers Everton a day later.

And you get the sense that the north Londoners have the bit between their teeth, and with the Seagulls' appearing to peter out, the home side surely have to be strong favourites for this one.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-1 Brighton

Nottingham Forest v Arsenal

arsenal manager mikel arteta

Forest have secured some memorable results at home this season, defeating Liverpool and nicking an unlikely point off Manchester City earlier in the campaign.

Arsenal will provide an altogether different test, but with plenty on the line for both sides, it is easy to see how this game could be considered a potential banana skin.

The Gunners will know, however, that winning is the only option if they wish to prolong the title race beyond this point, and having steamrollered Steve Cooper's side back in October, it could be a similar result if the visitors get into their groove.

Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1-4 Arsenal

Arsenal v Wolves

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-jesper-lindstrom

Arsenal will head into their fixture against Wolves knowing whether the title is still within reach. Given Man City's game in hand over the Gunners, they can seal the title with victory over Brighton, who they face four days prior.

But if Arsenal keep winning and there is a slip-up from the champions between now and then, it will go down to a final-day shootout, with the Emirates crowd getting behind the team one last time this season.

Only Manchester City have left north London with three points this term, and considering the manner in which Arsenal have taken teams apart in N5 over the past nine months, you can expect them to lay siege on the Wolves goal from the get-go.

With Julen Lopetegui's side already safe, they may well be dreading a trip to the Emirates after a taxing season. And with history within Arsenal's grasp, the Old Gold have offered little this term to suggest they are capable of spoiling a potential title party.

A fifth successive win here would mean the Gunners end on 90 points – the same as the legendary Invincibles side. But whether they are to also be crowned champions will surely hinge on events in Man City's game against Brentford rather than Wolves turning the form book on its head.

Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Wolves

Predicted run-in points: 9/9 Predicted total points: 90

Liverpool Need To Be Careful In Assesing Key Position

Liverpool need to be wary of being 'exposed' at right-back due to Jurgen Klopp's decision to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to venture into midfield, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Trent Alexander-Arnold's new role?

Alexander-Arnold has been something of a revelation in his new role as an inverted full-back with a licence to roam into central areas, having registered six assists in his last eight matches since being deployed there, as per Transfermarkt.

Former Liverpool player Dean Saunders has praised the tactical switch highly and thinks the Reds now don't need to sign a new midfielder in the summer due to the form of the 24-year-old.

Speaking to talkSPORT as quoted by The Mirror, the pundit said: "I honestly think Liverpool don't need to sign a midfield player. I think he [Alexander-Arnold] is better than all the English midfield players. I think Trent could play centre of midfield for England and end up captain. I think he's a brilliant central midfield player; he's like a caged animal waiting, you can tell he's loving it. He can defend in midfield, which is not like defending as a full-back where you get isolated with the winger – he's got defensive thoughts in his head which he can track people into the box. His feet are better than anybody's in the England team, both feet."

Liverpool have been in the market for several players to strengthen their midfield in the forthcoming transfer window, including Sporting Lisbon's Manuel Ugarte, Brighton & Hove Albion ace Alexis Mac Allister and Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount.

Nevertheless, Alexander-Arnold has helped to revive a stagnating Reds midfield in the last few weeks, which has helped Liverpool climb back into Champions League contention.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jones thinks Liverpool need to be cautious when operating in this system and also doesn't think that Alexander-Arnold will be moved into central midfield permanently to allow someone else to assume responsibilities at right-back such as Joe Gomez.

Jones told FFC: "I don't think Joe Joe Gomez could play this specific role that Trent is playing right now. I think that this has been adapted specifically for him to try and solve the problem, but you know, Liverpool do need to decide what actually happens at right back because that spot has been exposed a few times since they've been playing in this style."

Will Liverpool stick with this style of play next season?

Right now it's impossible to say; however, the initial signs have been encouraging at Anfield as Liverpool look to have turned a corner after an inconsistent 2022/23 campaign.

Klopp has managed to guide his side to eight matches without defeat in the Premier League and the Reds look to be finally enjoying themselves on the field, which bodes well for next season and to the degree that they may continue to use their current tactical system.

Of course, a lot will depend on summer signings at the club, who are likely to strengthen in middle of the park to replace peripheral figures such as the outgoing Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Veteran James Milner also looks certain to leave Liverpool to join Brighton on a free transfer, making it an interesting time of things to see where the future of Alexander Arnold's role will lie and whether he will be reverted back to duties more traditionally in keeping with a right-sided defender.
