David Bedingham, Graham Clark pile on runs in Durham promotion party

Pair of centuries underpin dominant display as champions seek to finish in style

ECB Reporters Network26-Sep-2023Graham Clark and David Bedingham both scored hundreds as Division 2 winners Durham looked to end the season with a victory as they piled on the runs on day 1 of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division 2 fixture against Leicestershire.Leicestershire looked to have made the correct decision at the toss to bowl as they dismissed Alex Lees for 6. However, Michael Jones and Scott Borthwick put on 99 for the second wicket to check their progress at Seat Unique Riverside. The visitors then fought back in the early afternoon as they dismissed Borthwick and Jones either side of lunch, before Ollie Robinson fell in a spell of 3 for 34.Bedingham and Clark stole the initiative and the momentum of the day, as they shared a 208-run partnership in the mid-afternoon and early evening as Durham looked to finish the season on a high after being confirmed as winners last week.On a week of celebration for the North East outfit as they ended their seven-year absence from Division 1, the sun hid away early on as Leicestershire won the toss and decided to bowl on an overcast morning at Chester-le-Street.They were rewarded early on when Chris Wright pinned Lees to dismiss the leading run scorer in the County Championship for 6 in the fifth over of the game. The ball moved around early on, Jones very fortunate to not be bowled by an absolute snorter by Wright that somehow didn’t take the edge of the bat or remove his off stump. However, Durham were not dissuaded by this and carried on in the same way they have done all season, applying pressure back onto the bowlers with their positive approach to batting with Jones and skipper Scott Borthwick.Borthwick took the aggressor role in the partnership and went to 50 off 45 balls with a clip through midwicket as Leicestersire tried desperately for a breakthrough to try and keep their slim promotion hopes alive. The visitors broke the partnership on 99 when Tom Scriven had Borthwick caught behind by Ben Cox standing up to the stumps just before lunch for a punchy 63, following his unbeaten 134 against Worcester. One brought two as Jones was bowled by Scriven first ball after the lunch break for 37, after surviving the moving ball earlier on in the day as the lights were intermittently.Their resistance continued as Ollie Robinson clipped Scriven to mid wicket in a burst of 3 for 34 as they looked to make the most of their decision to bowl first. However, the afternoon momentum then turned back to the hosts as Bedingham and Clark shared a 50-run partnership as the change bowlers failed to exert the same control and pressure.Clark moved to 50 off 52 balls as his comeback season in red ball continued in fine fettle, and Bedingham got his half century off 67 deliveries as the pair shifted momentum back towards the champions. The pair moved past the 100 partnership with ease, bringing Durham their 50th batting bonus point and thus a new club record for most batting points achieved in a single season.Leicestershire looked devoid of bowling options outside of Wright and Scriven as the pitch favoured batting, as Bedingham and Clark eased through the gears in the afternoon session following the loss of Robinson.Clark then moved to his third century of the season with a pull through the leg side Louis Kimber’s off spin, before Wright returned with the new ball to pin him LBW for a superb 119.Bedingham went to his fifth century of the season and 10th in a Durham shirt off 158 balls with a gentle push through the covers as Durham looked to assert total dominance of the game, before bad light brought a slightly premature end to the day.

PSG star Dembele is the favourite to win this year's Ballon d'Or after leading his side to Champions League, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France glory last season. Barcelona's Lamine Yamal is also in the running to claim the 2025 Golden Ball but Al-Khelaifi insisted the 28-year-old deserves this prestigious accolade.

Al-Khelaifi told DAZN: "Ousmane’s season is magnificent. There is no doubt that he won’t win the Ballon d’Or. If he doesn’t win it, there is a problem with the Ballon d’Or. He has done everything."

Dembele himself added: "I’m thinking about [the Ballon d’Or]. I know that, with the season that I have had, I am not far [from the Ballon d’Or], but I am focused on the objectives, before thinking about myself."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-Barcelona man Dembele has had the season of his life, scoring 33 goals and adding 15 assists in 49 matches in all competitions. He would be a worthy winner but last year, Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior was tipped to win the Ballon d'Or, only to be pipped by Manchester City's Rodri in a surprise pick. So it is not a given that he wins the award.

Soumya 169 in vain as Nicholls, Young power New Zealand to series win

Bangladesh batter rescued his side from 80 for 4 to help post 291, before the hosts’ top five combined to win with ease

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2023Soumya Sarkar cracked a career-best 169 out of Bangladesh’s total of 291 in the second ODI against New Zealand, but the visitors still fell well short in Nelson. Henry Nicholls hit 95 and Will Young continued his good form by smashing 89, and each of the hosts’ other top five batters helped them ease their way to the chase, which was completed with 22 balls and seven wickets in the bank.As a result, New Zealand went 2-0 up in the three-match series, having won the first ODI in Dunedin by 44 runs on Sunday.Opening the batting on Wednesday, Bangladesh slipped to 80 for 4 in the 17th over, with Jacob Duffy having struck twice for New Zealand. Regular wickets had forced Soumya to slow down after a quick start, during which he had moved to 26 off his first 23 deliveries, including hitting six boundaries. However, Soumya joined Mushfiqur Rahim to resurrect the innings. While Mushfiqur took his time to get going, Soumya kept ticking steadily, getting to his fifty from 58 balls with a boundary off Josh Clarkson to start the 21st over. Both batters hit the occasional boundary while keeping the scoreboard moving with singles and twos, before Duffy broke the game open. He had Mushfiqur caught behind for 45 in the 35th over, thus ending a stand of 91 in 18 overs. But Soumya then added 61 with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, in the process getting to his third ODI century off 116 balls at the beginning of the 40th over, though he was dropped by Young when on 92. But from 102 off 119 balls at one stage, Soumya hit 67 from his next 32 deliveries in the death overs. That aggression featured nine fours and two sixes – 13 of his other fours had all come earlier – before Bangladesh lost three wickets to Will O’Rourke in the final over. But Bangladesh still posted their highest score while batting first away from home against New Zealand, and started the defence of 291 by bowling two tight overs. Yet, New Zealand ended the powerplay at 61 without loss, as Young and Rachin Ravindra, fresh after pocketing his first IPL cheque, combined to hit nine boundaries. And though debutant legspinner Rishad Hossain ended that union at 76 by having Ravindra caught for 45 in the 11th over, more trouble awaited Bangladesh.Nicholls arrived at No. 3, and combined with Young to add 128 at almost a run a ball. He managed only 3 from his first 13 deliveries, while Young got to his eighth ODI fifty off 51 balls in the 17th over. But the pair maintained a consistent pace throughout their stand, rarely seeming to be in a hurry to hunt the total down, as Nicholls’ first boundary came only off his 17th ball.Young rode his luck twice – first on 76, when Towhid Hridoy couldn’t grab a difficult chance at extra cover, and then on 83, when he used DRS to reverse a caught-down-the-leg-side decision – before eventually perishing for 89 in the 33rd over. By then, Nicholls had got to a fifty of his own, which he could not convert into a century when he pulled Shoriful Isam to midwicket in the 41st over.Nicholls’ only ODI century had come almost five years ago in January 2019, but he wouldn’t have minded seeing Tom Latham and Tom Blundell wrap the game up for New Zealand. All that, despite Soumya’s monumental knock – the second-highest by a Bangladesh batter in ODIs – which went in vain.

Mumbai, Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka reach Vijay Hazare quarter-finals

Rajasthan and Haryana had already made it to the quarters, whereas Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Bengal will play the pre-quarter-finals

Vishal Dikshit05-Dec-2023After Rajasthan and Haryana had booked their quarter-finals berths for the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Sunday, Mumbai, Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also gained direct entry into the quarter-finals on the last day of the league stage. Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Bengal will play the pre-quarter-finals for the last two quarter-final spots. Here is how the action unfolded on the last league day.Samson’s century in vain but Kerala in pre-quarter-finals; Mumbai in QFsMumbai and Kerala were both on 20 points before Tuesday and had the chance to gain direct quarter-final entry with a win but they both lost their games on Tuesday: Mumbai by 86 runs to Odisha (after losing to Tripura on Sunday), and Kerala by 18 runs to Railways. Since both teams finished on 20 points, Mumbai were ranked above Kerala because of their head to head in the league stage.Qualification rules for knockouts

There will be two pre-quarter-finals before the quarter-finals so a total of ten teams will make the knockouts

There are five groups and the top-two teams from each will qualify for the knockouts

The teams topping the five groups will directly qualify for the quarter-finals and will be ranked from one to five based on their points/number of wins/NRR

The second-placed teams from each group will be ranked from six to ten based on their points/number of wins/NRR; from those top-ten rankings, the sixth-ranked team will also directly qualify for quarter-finals

The teams ranked seven to ten will play the pre-quarter-finals

If two teams finish on the same number of points for the top-two positions, the team with more wins will rank higher; if the wins are also equal, the result of the head-to-head fixture from the league stage will rank the winner higher

If points and wins are equal and above clause is not applicable, then the team with the higher NRR up to the league phase will decide the higher position.

Mumbai’s poor run continued because they failed to chase down 200 as they were bundled for just 113 in 32.3 overs. Only five of their batters reached double-figures, captain Ajinkya Rahane fell for 7, Shivam Dube for 8 and No. 11 Royston Dias top-scored with an unbeaten 24.Kerala lost to Railways despite a quick century from their captain Sanju Samson. Chasing 256, Samson hardly got any support from his team-mates as Kerala slipped to 59 for 4 before Shreyas Gopal (53) joined his captain for a century stand. But once Shreyas fell in the 45th over, Kerala needed another 59 from 34 balls and Samson was their only hope. He took them to the last over but couldn’t take them all the way.Gujarat pip Uttar Pradesh for knockout qualificationFile photo: Urvil Patel smashed another century soon after the second-fastest List A ton by an Indian•GCAThe very last game of the league stage went down to the last over and eventually crushed Uttar Pradesh’s hopes of making the knockouts because Gujarat beat Himachal Pradesh with an eight-run win to finish second and leave UP behind.Rajasthan had already qualified from Group D; the fight for the second place was now between UP (who were on 16 points before Tuesday), Gujarat (14) and Himachal (12). Gujarat started on a solid note against Himachal on Tuesday by putting up 327 with a century from Urvil Patel (his second in three games apart from an 86 in between) and 96 from Priyank Panchal. Their opening stand of 211 in 32.5 overs had laid a great platform for probably a bigger score, but Arpit Guleria’s 8 for 50 kept them to 327. Guleria’s was only the third eight-wicket haul by an Indian in 50-over games.Himachal got a steady start led by opener Prashant Chopra’s 96 before No. 6 Sumeet Verma blasted 82 off 47 balls to take them past 250 before the 40th over. Gujarat also struck back with late wickets, and it was down to 11 required off the last over, in which Hemang Patel conceded just two and finished the game with a final-ball wicket.Ankit Bawne’s century takes Maharashtra through to pre-quartersAs many as six of the eight teams in Group B were in knockout contention till Tuesday and while Maharashtra made it eventually with a win of 167 runs over Manipur, Vidarbha got a direct quarter-final entry despite a slim loss of 15 runs to Services.Maharashtra’s fourth win in a row was scripted by a big century from Ankit Bawne (167 off 105) and half-centuries from Om Bhosale (60), Kaushal Tambe (51) and Rushabh Rathod (65) that helped them put on a massive 427 for 6. Manipur tried putting up a fight but they could manage only 260 for 6.Vidarbha, Maharashtra and Services all finished on 20 points, but Vidarbha and Maharashtra were ranked 1 and 2 in the group on account of better NRR. Hyderabad, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were also in contention but lost out by finishing on 16 points.Koushik, Gowtham power Karnataka into quarter-finalsFile photo: Vasuki Koushik took 4 for 7 for Karnataka•Maharaja T20After Haryana had already made it to the quarters from Group C, Karnataka followed too on Tuesday, with a six-wicket win over Mizoram. Vasuki Koushik led Karnataka’s bowling attack to finish with 4 for 7 and K Gowtham took 3 for 49 to bowl out Mizoram for just 124. Captain Mayank Agarwal scored 48 in the chase and even though they lost four wickets, they raced to the target in 17.1 overs.Varun Chakravarthy, Sai Kishore spin Tamil Nadu into quartersThe four-way race in Group E between Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab ended with Tamil Nadu reaching the quarters and Bengal making it to the pre-quarters.Tamil Nadu’s bowlers ensured the match against Nagaland lasted just 165 deliveries after Varun Chakravarthy took 5-3-9-5 and R Sai Kishore 3 for 21 to bowl out Nagaland for 69 in under 20 overs. In reply, openers Sai Kishore and N Jagadeesan hunted it down in just 7.5 overs for a 10-wicket win.Bengal eliminated Punjab from the race and confirmed their own pre-quarter berth with a 52-run victory. Even though Bengal scored a modest 242 for 9, led by Anustup Majumdar’s unbeaten 111, they defended it comfortably in the end thanks to three-wicket hauls from Shahbaz Ahmed and Kaushik Maity, and two wickets apiece from Pradipta Pramanik and Mohammad Kaif.

As for Lopez, he is happy with his current role at the Spanish champions and is determined to stay in Catalunya.

Barcelona have their perfect 10: Lamine Yamal is ready for weight of Lionel Messi's iconic shirt number

The Spain wonderkid needs to be wary of the pitfalls of global fame as he follows in the footsteps of a Blaugrana legend

After many months of anticipation, Lamine Yamal finally signed his new six-year contract at Barcelona on Wednesday. That agreement reportedly made the teenage winger the highest-paid player in Hansi Flick's squad on an annual salary of €30 million ($34 million), which is a reward for his incredible contribution to the team's domestic treble success in 2024-25.

But perhaps most importantly, Yamal was also bestowed with the No.10 jersey previously worn by Lionel Messi. That iconic shirt was vacated when Ansu Fati joined Monaco on loan earlier this summer, with the academy graduate ultimately unable to handle the weight of history that came with it.

It's very difficult to imagine Yamal experiencing the same problem, though. "I don't feel pressure; I'm at the best club in the world. Messi has made his way, I'm going to make mine, and the '10' comes from Ansu anyway. I'll try to make my own way," he told Barca's official media channels.

That fearlessness is what has set Yamal apart from his peers since his stunning breakthrough in the senior team. Walking the same path as Messi, and the likes of Ronaldinho, Romario and Diego Maradona before him, does not faze the Spain international. After all, he had already racked up 74 goal contributions for club and country en route to winning four major titles, including the European Championship, prior to turning 18 on July 13.

Yamal may even become the youngest Ballon d'Or winner ever later this year, having consistently delivered awe-inspiring performances in the biggest matches. The sky is the limit if he continues on his current trajectory. But to do that, Yamal will have to avoid the same trap Neymar fell into back when the Brazilian also had the world at his feet in Catalonia.

Birthday party controversy

Yamal's new contract has been somewhat overshadowed by the headlines generated from his lavish 18th birthday party last Sunday. It has been reported that around 200 guests attended the bash at a rented country mansion in the town of Olivella, including a host of musicians and influencers as well as team-mates Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde, Gavi and Raphinha.

As per , there was a cocktail bar area and gourmet catering, while a huge cake decorated with chocolate pistols and wads of banknotes was rolled in to fit the 'Italian Mafia' party theme. Yamal set the tone by wearing a striking all-white suit complete with a red rose and diamond-encrusted cane.

But controversy was sparked when a group of dwarves was filmed heading to the venue. They were allegedly hired by Yamal to provide entertainment, which has been described as "unacceptable in the 21st century" by the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE).

The ADEE also filed a complaint with the Spanish government calling for a full investigation "to determine whether the law and, therefore, the rights of people with disabilities have been violated".

One of the dwarves who was allegedly present at the party has since insisted to that everything was above board and "we do this job because we want to", but, at best, the whole incident will go down as a serious error of misjudgement on Yamal's part and, at worst, his reputation could be permanently tarnished.

AdvertisementInstagramNeymar a 'bad influence'?

According to Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada, Barcelona are "very worried" about Yamal's behaviour away from the pitch this summer. The teenage ace was also seen on holiday with OnlyFans model Fati Vazquez, and he visited former Barca star Neymar at his home in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro.

Yamal documented his trip to Brazil for his fans on social media as he played footvolley with Neymar, relaxed by the swimming pool and exchanged shirts with the Santos poster boy, who is currently trying to rebuild his career at his childhood club after an injury-plagued spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal. But the has reported that concerns have been raised over Neymar being a potentially 'bad influence' on Yamal.

Neymar initially developed a party-goer reputation at Barcelona between 2013 and 2017, which threatened to get out of control after his world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. The Brazil international made more headlines for his appearances at nightclubs in the French capital than he did for his footballing exploits, and was regularly criticised for a perceived lack of commitment.

Some of that was a touch unfair given Neymar was also dealt a cruel hand with injuries, but there's no doubt he didn't do enough to justify his €222 million (£200m/$262m) price tag at the Parc des Princes. In that sense, perhaps Neymar is not the best role model for Yamal as he starts to take on even greater responsibility at Barcelona.

Getty ImagesCan't become distracted

Neymar achieved great things at Barcelona, winning La Liga and the Champions League while forming part of the acclaimed 'MSN' front three alongside Messi and Luis Suarez, but the consensus is that he never quite reached his full potential. That could be a mindset issue, but it's also possible he just didn't strike the perfect balance between work and play.

Yamal shrugged off the backlash around his 18th birthday party by saying, "I work for Barca, but when I’m outside the training ground, I enjoy my life" – which is absolutely fine, but he must be careful to ensure he doesn't become distracted. If Yamal allows his level to drop even slightly, and Barcelona suffer a dip in results, he will be subject to the same widespread disapproval that Neymar endured.

Even though Yamal is just a kid who is still maturing physically and mentally, he will be judged as an adult because he's already earned a standing among football's elite. Fortunately, he has a strong support network.

According to columnist Guillem Ballague, Yamal's parents "play a crucial role in keeping his feet on the ground" and are not afraid to "tell it as it is". They have not only helped to nurture Yamal's singular talent, but also drummed into his head the importance of hard work and striving for excellence.

"My ambition is simple: to keep winning and improving every day – I'm still young, and there's so much ahead of me," Yamal added at his contract signing. As long as he maintains that attitude, the future is very bright, for him and Barcelona.

Getty/GOALAhead of Messi

Yamal has the competitive edge required to be one of the greats, but also plays with a carefree abandon that makes him so thrilling to watch. That's why he is so often compared to Messi, who was similarly bold and creative in his early years at Barca, but the Argentine magician has always been a quiet character who doesn't seek out the spotlight.

In stark contrast, Yamal seems to relish it. He's reportedly one of the loudest members of the current Barca dressing room, and has no qualms about using social media as a tool to wind up his rivals or detractors.

While Messi took time to adjust to fame, Yamal is seemingly unburdened by self-consciousness. That may go some way to explaining why he is actually a lot further ahead in his development than Messi was at the same age.

Indeed, Yamal has played 200 more minutes for Barcelona than Messi had managed by the time he'd turned 21. At 18, Messi had just one professional goal to his name and no assists, while he had yet to win his first cap for Argentina. Yamal has already scored 25 goals in a Barca shirt and set up another 34, and has made 21 appearances for Spain.

Those statistics are simply extraordinary, but even more impressive is the fact that Barca already rely on Yamal as their main source of inspiration, which was not the case for Messi until Ronaldinho left the club.

Bartlett makes a massive impact on 'almost not real' Australia debut

“He looked like he belonged,” Shai Hope says of Xavier Bartlett

Alex Malcolm02-Feb-2024No one predicted Xavier Bartlett would be playing for Australia this summer. Not even Xavier Bartlett. The fact that he made his debut in an ODI, having not played a 50-over List A game for Queensland since September 2022, makes it even more remarkable. Before the BBL, where he dominated the tournament taking 20 wickets in Brisbane Heat’s title win, Bartlett did not play a single game for Queensland in any format as he was coming off a back injury. But, at the MCG on Friday, he looked like he had been playing international cricket for years as he scythed through West Indies’ top order to claim 4 for 17, the second-best figures by an Australian man on ODI debut.Related

Bartlett four-for, Green's all-round effort give Australia 1-0 lead

“It almost feels like it’s not real,” Bartlett said after the match. He admitted he had no thought at the start of the summer, or even during the early part of the BBL, that he was even close to Australia selection.”Oh, definitely not,” Bartlett said. “We’ve got so many great fast bowlers at the moment. Obviously, [Mitchell] Starc, [Josh] Hazlewood and [Pat] Cummins are probably the top three to ever do it for Australia or in that conversation. And then I only really got my chance through Jhye Richardson’s injury and Nathan Ellis was injured as well.”There’s definitely a long list of people in front of me. But I’ve just got to keep trying to do my best for Queensland, and if I get an opportunity at the higher level, just try and take it and just sort of almost learn as much as I can as well along the way.”

“Not the quickest, but as we see you don’t need pace to be disruptive. He was very, very consistent”Shai Hope on Xavier Bartlett

Despite his BBL success, the thought had dawned on him that he had not played any 50-over cricket since September 2022, which added to his pre-game nerves.”Yeah it did,” Bartlett said. “I spoke to someone on the phone and I was like ‘I haven’t played a 50-over game in like 15 or 16 months’. Yeah, I mean … I don’t know. It just sort of happened so fast.”I was injured at the start of this year and didn’t have a chance to play any domestic cricket, which was a frustrating time. But you can kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel and you’ve just got to keep trying to work hard because these days don’t happen very often in the game of cricket.”Xavier Bartlett was one of Brisbane Heat’s stars in the latest BBL•Cricket Australia via Getty ImagesIt was serendipitous that Australia’s selector on duty, Tony Dodemaide, had been the one to tell Bartlett he would make his international debut. Dodemaide’s 5 for 21 against Sri Lanka in 1988 remains the best figures on ODI debut by an Australian, but Bartlett was happy to slot in behind him in second spot.”We were sitting in there watching the boys bat and it floated up on the screen,” Bartlett said. “Some of those names, to just be alongside them, it’s pretty cool. [Dodemaide] didn’t say anything. I just had a little picture with him just then.”West Indies captain Shai Hope was one of Bartlett’s four victims, having nicked a good length outswinger to first slip during the powerplay. He had watched footage of Bartlett in the lead-up but was very impressed by the real thing.”He’s shown that he’s got the ability to perform at this level,” Hope said after the match. “Not the quickest, but as we see you don’t need pace to be disruptive. He was very, very consistent. He bowled really well, especially for his first game. He looked like he belonged. We know as a West Indies group we have to find a way to not allow him to settle for the next game.”

Match detailsChennai Super Kings (Fifth – P8, W4, L4) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (Third – P8, W5, L3)Chennai, 7.30pm (2pm GMT)Big pictureChennai Super Kings started a run of three home games on the trot with a defeat against Lucknow Super Giants, and having lost the reverse fixture in Lucknow just prior to that, they are suddenly looking at the prospect of slipping down the table. Next up for them: Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were flying high till faltering in a 207-run chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their previous game.If CSK want to regain their form at home, historically there is no team better than SRH for them to come up against. They have beaten SRH 14 times in 20 encounters, and have a 100% win record against them at Chepauk. But history books have been thrown in the bin this season, especially as far as SRH are concerned. Batting records have tumbled this season, and SRH have been at the forefront of it. So facing them after seeing their total of 210 being chased down in the last game could be a daunting proposition for CSK.Related

RCB showed one way to counter SRH’s deadly opening duo. They bowled spin first up and managed to stifle Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, getting them both out in the powerplay. So will CSK look at introducing Moeen Ali into the attack early? Or will they hope that Deepak Chahar can dismiss Abhishek for the third time in as many innings? However they plan it, CSK will know that they need to come out on top in the powerplay with the ball.Form guideChennai Super Kings LLWWL (last five matches, most recent first)
Sunrisers Hyderabad LWWWWPrevious meetingThe two teams met in Hyderabad on April 5, when it still wasn’t clear that this IPL would become a six-hitting frenzy. Dube hit 45 off 24, but SRH restricted CSK to 165 for 5. Abhishek set up the chase with a 12-ball 37 before Aiden Markram anchored SRH to victory with a 36-ball 50.Team news and Impact Player strategyChennai Super KingsCSK are unlikely to move away from the team that lined up in their last match, with Shardul Thakur and Ajinkya Rahane as the respective Impact Players depending on whether they are batting or bowling first.Probable XII: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 , 3 Daryl Mitchell, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Shivam Dube, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 MS Dhoni (wk), 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Tushar Deshpande, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Matheesha Pathirana, 12 Sunrisers HyderabadDespite a hiccup, SRH don’t have a reason to tinker with their team. His strike rate has been 127.78, and he is averaging 23. For reference, he struck at 172.49 last season. He made a 30-ball 35 the last time these two teams met and CSK will hope he can do better on Sunday. Despite middling returns, CSK have persisted with him, even pushing him up to open in the last three matches, but it’s still failed to unlock his best. With Head, Abhishek and Heinrich Klaasen hogging the limelight, Aiden Markram has been a relatively quiet figure for SRH this season. He showed his worth scoring an important fifty in a low-scoring chase when these two sides last met, which could well be his big role in the side. The heavy hitting has been left to the others, he just needs to ensure they don’t slide with the loss of early wickets or on tougher tracks. But with Glenn Phillips warming the bench, SRH might want Markram to start returning better numbers.Pitch and conditionsChepauk has seen 200 crossed three times in four matches this season – two of those instances in the previous game there. Other than that, it’s not been the most free-flowing deck and could be a challenge for SRH’s approach. However, if the pitch is anything like the last game, the batters will be licking their lips. Stats that matter Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dismissed Ajinkya Rahane six times in 17 innings in all T20s. Rahane strikes at 88.88 against him. Jaydev Unadkat is two strikes away from becoming the 25th bowler to get 100 IPL wickets. MS Dhoni is three away from becoming the first player to take 150 catches in the IPL.
