Worse than Scales: Rodgers must drop Celtic ace who lost 73% duels

Celtic head into the final international break of the year on a high after they beat Kilmarnock 2-0 away from home in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

The Hoops needed to claim all three points to move back to the top of the table, after Aberdeen’s win over Dundee on Saturday, and that is exactly what they did.

Callum McGregor opened the scoring for the away side in the first half when his attempted cross evaded everyone, including Robby McCrorie, and found the bottom corner.

Nicolas Kuhn then made it 2-0 in the second half with a burst down the right flank that resulted in him being able to confidently place the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle on his left foot.

The German forward has already recorded a double-double for goals and assists in all competitions this season, with ten goals and 11 assists in 17 appearances for Celtic.

He has emerged as a superstar within Brendan Rodgers’ team and came up with another big moment against Kilmarnock to seal all three points on Sunday.

One player who did struggle at the weekend at times, however, was central defender Liam Scales, who came in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Liam Scales' performance in numbers

The Ireland international was drafted back into the team after an injury to the American defender and played alongside Auston Trusty, who was shifted over to the right centre-back role, at the back for Celtic.

Scales was partially at fault for the huge early chance that was missed by Kilmarnock forward Marley Watkins, after he stepped out of defence to get tight to his man, only for Watkins to run into the space that he left behind to go one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel.

Thankfully, for Celtic and the Irish defender, the former Norwich City and Bristol City marksman could only fire his shot off the post and wide, instead of taking advantage of the opportunity that was created by the centre-back’s poor decision.

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

Scales, who made another error that directly led to a shot, did not do enough to protect his goalkeeper, who had to make six saves to preserve his clean sheet.

The left-footed dud did win ten of his 12 aerial duels throughout the match, which shows that he was dominant in the air, but did not get close enough to Kilmarnock’s attackers on the deck, winning just one ground duel as the hosts had 18 shots and created two ‘big chances’.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He was far from the only poor performer on the pitch for the Scottish giants, however, as centre-forward Adam Idah was even worse than the former Aberdeen loanee.

Adam Idah's performance against Kilmarnock in numbers

The 6 foot 3 striker was handed just his third start in the Premiership this season and it was a huge opportunity for him to show Rodgers that he deserves more minutes on the pitch moving forward.

Kyogo Furuhashi has missed a whopping 12 ‘big chances’ and only scored four goals in 11 appearances in the division this term, which shows that the Japanese forward can lose his place in the starting XI.

However, Idah needs to step up when chances to impress come his way and that was not the case in a poor showing against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Playing on an artificial pitch is never ideal, of course, but the summer signing from Norwich City did not adjust to it and struggled badly throughout the game.

As you can see in the table above, Idah was loose with his passing and failed to hold his own in physical duels against the Kilmarnock defenders.

The 23-year-old lightweight also missed a ‘big chance’ to open the scoring early on, when he could not sort his feet out in time to get a clean connection on a cross from Daizen Maeda from close range.

Idah also failed to connect with two brilliant crosses into the box, from Kuhn and McGregor, although the second one went all the way in anyway from the skipper.

The ex-Canaries ace, who lost possession a whopping 18 times from 41 touches, did create a ‘big chance’ for Kuhn that did not register in an assist but his all-round play, with his struggles in front of goal and in duels, was even worse than Scales’.

Why Adam Idah should be dropped

Rodgers must now instantly bin the Ireland international from the starting XI when the Hoops come back on the other side of the international break, as he did not do enough to justify his continued selection in the team.

In fact, Idah has not done enough throughout the 2024/25 campaign to justify the huge price that the Scottish giants reportedly paid to sign him on a permanent basis.

Sky Sports reported that Celtic agreed an initial fee of £8.5m to sign the striker and that it could rise to £9.5m with add-ons, which made it a potential club-record deal at the time, with Odsonne Edouard’s £9m move from PSG holding the record at the time.

Arne Engels was then brought in for £11m from Augsburg but that still means that Idah could end up being the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history.

At the age of 23, the Irishman does have plenty of time to come good and prove that he was worth the money spent on him, but the early signs have not been overly promising.

As you can see in the table above, Idah’s performances have declined since his initial spell on loan from Norwich in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

He has scored less frequently, missed ‘big chances’ more consistently, and failed to provide any assists so far, albeit only in a sample size of eight games.

There is no need to label the Irish marksman a flop yet but Rodgers will need to see better performances than the one he produced against Kilmarnock to be able to trust him to start week-in-week-out over Kyogo.

Lorenzo Insigne has not traveled with Toronto FC for their MLS opening day match against D.C. United, with his absence being a coach's decision. Newly appointed boss Robin Fraser does not see the Italy international in his plans for the upcoming season.

The club has reportedly engaged in transfer opportunities for the winger, but he has declined the chance to depart the MLS side.

was the first to report that TFC did not plan to utilize Insigne for the 2025 season and that he did not travel Saturday.

The report added that clubs from Italy, Spain and Turkey all approached TFC over a potential move, but the winger declined each opportunity in January.

In 2024, per the MLS Players Association, Insigne made a guaranteed compensation of $15.4M. Since arriving in MLS as a Designated Player with TFC, he has 14 goals and 14 assists in 54 appearances across four seasons.

In 2023, The Athletic reported that Insigne was part of a fractured locker room involving former head coach Bob Bradley, which reportedly led to the manager's dismissal later that season. Later that campaign, a detailed report emerged saying the Italian had an argument with interim manager Terry Dunfield, who replaced Bradley.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2024, Insigne only managed 23 appearances for the club, and in a match against Inter Miami after returning from injury, he came off the bench putting in a sluggish cameo. After the game, then head coach John Herdman appeared to take a shot at him over his work ethic.

"You could see he didn't have much in him," Herdman told media. "I think he managed to get Messi's shirt, though. But… yeah."

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jan-2022Sydney Sixers have been dealt a huge blow with Josh Philippe ruled out of their home BBL Challenger against Adelaide Strikers on Wednesday night after returning a positive Covid test and they are set to have an assistant coach behind the stumps.Philippe returned the positive test on Wednesday morning and has been forced into isolation for seven days, meaning he has been ruled out of the Challenger and will be unavailable for Friday night’s final against Perth Scorchers in Melbourne if the Sixers progress.Philippe becomes the third Sixers player to test positive in the last week after Jack Edwards and Mickey Edwards both tested positive on the eve of the Qualifier against Scorchers in Melbourne.Former Sydney Thunder wicketkeeper Jay Lenton, who has been part of Sixers’ coaching staff, has been called into the squad as a local replacement player. Lenton had to be formally added to the BBL’s local replacement player pool on Wednesday before he could be added to the Sixers squad as there were no available wicketkeepers in the original pool of players.Sixers were still not able to call in Steven Smith despite being available and keen to play after the BBL ruled him ineligible having not been originally contracted by the Sixers and not been placed on the local replacement list which would have made him available to all clubs.Daniel Hughes has been named in Sixers’ 14-man squad but will need to pass a fitness test to play after he missed the Qualifier against Scorchers when he twisted his ankle standing on the boundary rope while taking outfield catches in the warm-up.

Better than Van Nistelrooy: Leicester want to hire "genius" Cooper upgrade

Leicester City made the decision to ruthlessly part ways with manager Steve Cooper, who only arrived to replace Enzo Maresca in the summer, on Sunday.

It may seem like an odd decision from the outside looking in, with the Foxes 16th and outside of the relegation zone, but the underlying statistics have been poor throughout the season.

Cooper’s team sat 19th in the league for xGA (22.8) and 18th for xG (12.2) and this shows that the performances were of relegation quality, which may be why the board have decided to make a change.

It is now down to the club, however, to ensure that they are able to dip into the managerial market and land an upgrade on the former Nottingham Forest boss.

Leicester considering swoop for English coach

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Leicester are considering a move to bring in out-of-work head coach Graham Potter in to replace Cooper in the dugout.

The report claims that the former Brighton and Chelsea boss has been identified as one of a number of potential candidates in the running to land the role.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

It adds that the board are happy with the transfer business that was done in the summer and that they do not believe that Cooper was getting the best out of the options at his disposal.

The Independent, meanwhile, claims that former Manchester United assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, alongside Potter, is also a contender for the job, having moved on from Old Trafford earlier this month following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

Why Leicester should appoint Graham Potter

Firstly, the former Brighton manager would be a better option than van Nistelrooy as he has the relevant experience to help him hit the ground running, which is what Leicester need in the midst of a relegation battle.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The Dutchman has only had one full season as a first-team head coach, finishing second with PSV in the 2022/23 campaign, and was part of a coaching set-up at Manchester United that ultimately saw Erik ten Hag lose his job, with no experience of battling relegation.

Whereas, Potter has plenty of experience in English football, with Swansea, Brighton, and Chelsea, and kept Brighton in the Premier League in all three of his seasons on the south coast.

In his three full campaigns with the Seagulls, the English boss finished 15th, 16th, and 9th in the top-flight, and has averaged 1.23 points per game as a Premier League manager.

As you can see in the table above, Potter has a far superior record in comparison to Cooper in the top-flight, with a points-per-game rate that equates to between 46 and 47 points over a 38-match season.

Whereas, the former Leicester boss’ career average is only 35 points per 38-game campaign in the Premier League, which shows how much of an upgrade the ex-Brighton tactician would be.

It is now down to the board to ensure that they can convince the 49-year-old manager, who was once dubbed a “a genius” by journalist Sam Morton, to take on the job in the coming days.

Khawaja's special century puts Australia on top

Khawaja and Smith capitalised on favourable batting conditions to control the opening day of the second Test

Tristan Lavalette12-Mar-2022Stumps In-form Usman Khawaja scored a memorable first Test century in the country of his birth, as Australia capitalised on favourable batting conditions to control the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan. After skipper Pat Cummins won a crucial toss and elected to bat, Khawaja scored his 11th Test century to lead Australia to 251 for 3 at stumps. He finished 127 not out from 266 balls with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon yet to score. But Australia suffered a late blow almost out of nowhere when Steven Smith fell for 72 in the penultimate over before stumps after Faheem Ashraf took a stunning one-hand catch at second slip off Hasan Ali.The pair had compiled a 159-run partnership as they batted nearly two sessions to blunt an uninspiring Pakistan, which resorted to defensive tactics during a dull final session reminiscent of the dreary Rawalpindi Test.Khawaja became the first Australian to score a Test century in Pakistan since Mark Waugh’s 117 during the third Test in 1998. Having been dismissed on 97 in the first Test, the left-hander spent a considerable time in the 90s either side of tea before notching his milestone with a single to square leg off Sajid Khan. He jumped in the air and pumped his fist in a more muted celebration than after his comeback ton during the SCG Ashes Test. Mixing exquisite strokes with watchful defence, Khawaja notched his third century from six innings since his recall in January. With Khawaja and Smith untroubled, a hapless Pakistan sought a defensive ploy with spinners Sajid and Nauman Ali bowling a leg stump line but Australia’s batters remained patient with Smith constantly padding up during an excruciating period where no boundaries were struck for 23 overs. The only source of entertainment was Nauman’s rather ambitious lbw shout against Smith for a delivery pitching way out outside leg stump that left his team-mates chuckling.Mercifully, the second new ball was taken and the match came alive before stumps as Pakistan reverted back to trying to take wickets with Hasan eking out Smith, who fell for the second straight time in the 70s much to his disbelief. There had been much intrigue over conditions in Karachi after the historic series, the first between the teams in Pakistan since 1998, started with a stale draw due to a lifeless Rawalpindi pitch rated by the ICC as below average. But it has been more of the same with conditions skewed towards the batters although reverse swing was evident before tea and Nauman did conjure occasional turn and bounce before utilising the negative tactics.Steven Smith fell for the second straight time in the 70s•AFP/Getty ImagesIn a letdown after a moral victory in the first Test, Pakistan were mostly unimaginative and rarely threatened apart from quicks Faheem and Shaheen Shah Afridi conjuring reverse swing before tea but to no avail.Shaheen, who was the standout in the first Test, couldn’t quite hit top gear while Hasan, who returned from an abductor strain, struggled to consistently probe having replaced fiery quick Naseem Shah, who impressed in Rawalpindi with menacing short-pitched bowling. After being on the back foot for the entirety of the series-opener, their first Test in Pakistan in nearly 24 years, Australia dictated the opening day’s play apart from a chaotic period before lunch when they lost the key wickets of David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne. Warner fell on 36 to a gem of a delivery from returning pace allrounder Faheem, who squared up the veteran to entice an edge to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.Shortly after, Labuschagne, who made 90 in Rawalpindi and is the No.1 ranked batter in the world, was run out for a duck by a direct side-arm throw from Sajid after attempting a risky single. The wickets went against the run of play after Khawaja and Warner compiled a brisk 82-run opening stand, as they weathered challenging new ball bowling from Pakistan’s pacemen before putting the foot down against Sajid. For the second straight innings, Warner rued missing out after a strong start but Khawaja cashed in to ensure Australia built a platform as they eye a massive first innings total, which would be surely welcomed by their tweaked attack. In their only change, Australia handed legspinner Mitchell Swepson his long-awaited Test debut having been around the squad since 2017. The 28-year-old replaced quick Josh Hazlewood to become the first specialist legspinner capped by an Australian Test team since Bryce McGain in 2009.Before Swepson gets his chance, Australia will look to continue Pakistan’s toil under hot conditions in Karachi, where the temperature is again forecast to hit over 30 degrees on Sunday in a contrast to Rawalpindi’s mild conditions last week.

Their answer to Odegaard: Chelsea keen on signing "world-class" £42m star

Chelsea has often been home to some of the biggest talents in world football, helping them win two Champions League titles and five Premier League trophies.

However, the club have suffered over the last couple of years, failing to hit the heights they managed in the days under the likes of José Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel, with the trio all winning at least one major trophy.

In 2024/25, that responsibility falls on the shoulders of Enzo Maresca, who arrived from Leicester City during the off-season, already making an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge.

He’s led the club to seven wins in their opening 13 matches, sitting level on points with London rivals Arsenal and looking to emulate the success of compatriot Conte, who was the last manager to win a league trophy for the Blues.

Maresca will be reliant on numerous players throughout the campaign if they are to mount a serious push for the top four or even a late title charge, looking to close the gap opened up by Liverpool.

Maresca’s record as Chelsea manager

After the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the season, many Chelsea supporters wanted a big name to come in and replace the Argentine in West London.

However, the 44-year-old, who previously spent time working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, was appointed the new boss on a five-year deal after winning promotion with Leicester City last season.

Despite many questions being asked about his appointment, Maresca has already demonstrated that owner Todd Boehly made the right call in hiring him, producing some phenomenal results during the opening months of his tenure.

He’s overseen 20 matches so far at the Bridge, winning 13 and only suffering three defeats, achieving a win rate of 65% – highlighting the immediate impact he’s made in recent months.

There have been multiple magnificent displays, including the 6-2 win against Wolves at Molineux, which saw winger Noni Madueke grab a hat-trick after a controversial social media post accidentally came from his account.

The 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion was another huge victory against a side who have been just as impressive under their new manager Fabian Hurzeler, but Cole Palmer’s four-goal haul saw off any threat from the Seagulls.

With January just a couple of weeks away, the Blues boss will be hoping to bolster his ranks with one player who could be their own version of a star currently plying his trade in England’s top flight.

Chelsea targeting move for £42m superstar

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Chelsea are eyeing a move for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders despite the 26-year-old closing in on a new deal at the San Siro.

The Dutchman, who joined from AZ Alkmaar last summer, has been in impressive form over recent weeks, scoring seven times in his 18 appearances in all competitions, including a double in the 3-0 win over Empoli at the weekend.

However, the Blues aren’t the only side interested in Reijnders, with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Tottenham also interested in the talent valued at €50m (£42m) as per the report.

He would be a superb addition for Maresca, potentially becoming his own version of Arsenal ace Martin Odegaard, who’s consistently been one of the best talents in the division over the last couple of years.

The pair possess similarities in their game, with both being attacking-minded midfielders, featuring slightly deeper to fit into their respective systems, but still having a huge impact within the final third.

FBref categorises the Gunners’ talent as a similar player to the Dutchman, an understandable comparison given their respective stats from the Serie A and Premier League throughout 2023/24.

The “world-class” Reijnders, as dubbed by commentator Matteo Bonetti, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists last campaign, but did demonstrate his creative spark by completing more of the take-ons he attempted.

Whilst they may face competition from elsewhere, the Milan talent would be a huge coup, with Maresca getting his hands on a player who can bolster his ambitions of being successful during his first season at the helm.

The £42m valuation on his head seems like an excellent price tag, with owner Boehly needing to get his chequebook out once more to complete a deal.

PSL franchises, corporates on board for inaugural Pakistan Junior League

The first edition of the tournament will take place from October 1 to 15 this year

Umar Farooq29-Apr-2022The inaugural Pakistan Junior League will be played from October 1 to 15, featuring six teams and 19 games, at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. It is also understood that, after the PCB invited corporate entities to be a part of the tournament, there were as many as 24 companies that came forward with a desire to be involved in different capacities. And at least three of the six existing PSL franchises are also believed to be interested in buying teams. The PCB feels there is enough interest to attract commercial partners, and is hopeful of roping in Pakistani legends as mentors and coaches.”I am delighted, encouraged and motivated by the response we have received to the Pakistan Junior League’s Request for Expressions of Interest,” Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, said in a statement on Friday. “This feedback has strengthened my belief and confidence that we have a huge appetite for cricket and a strong commercial market, which is keen, eager and happy to partner with the PCB on its projects of introducing new properties so that we can strengthen ourselves financially and commercially, and the return on investments are shared with all cricketers.”Following the success of the Pakistan Super League and the ever-improving reputation of the PCB, the potential sponsors have shown excitement and expressed their interest in the city-based Pakistan Junior League in their endeavour to play an important role in helping the PCB to create an environment of brilliance by providing a clear pathway to the talented youngsters, which, in turn, will fortify our bench-strength and produce new national stars and heroes.”The plan for a franchise-based T20 league for junior cricketers – locals with a smattering of overseas players – was communicated by the PCB two weeks ago. The aim is to pick players from the 15-19 age group through a draft process. The PCB has confirmed that all overseas cricketers will be allowed to have a parent accompany them, with the cost to be footed either by the organisers or the franchises. The domestic cricket structure in Pakistan has been subject to a lot of rejigging over the years but the pathway for age-group players has mostly been structured, featuring levels between the Under-15s and the Under-19s. Historically, the age-group players have been nurtured through longer-format games, playing two- or three-day games alongside one-dayers.They have not really been exposed to the T20 format during their development phase in accordance with PCB regulations. The exception has been the PSL, where each franchise is required to field at least one emerging player in every game. That has led to quite a few new faces coming to the fore over the years.

Corberan could boldly axe West Brom "animal" who earns more than Johnston

After four straight draws in the Championship, West Bromwich Albion finally broke out of this poor run of form with a straightforward 2-0 victory over Coventry City on Wednesday night.

Subsequently, the Baggies are now occupying that final coveted playoff spot in the difficult division, knowing that their resolve in the promotion places will be significantly tested the more December drags on.

Carlos Corberan will just want more from his players in matches to come to continue tallying up victories over falling victim to more draws, with the likes of Mikey Johnston arguably needing up to their game down the left flank for the promotion hopefuls.

Johnston's return to West Brom

After an explosive loan stint last campaign, it was always going to be tricky for Johnston to return and pick back up from where he left off, after only linking back up with Corberan’s camp on a permanent deal right at the tail-end of August.

The full-throttle winger’s first spell would see him pick up a phenomenal seven strikes from 18 league contests, as his heroics enabled the Baggies to pick up a playoff position with ease, due to his devastating attacking displays turning second-tier defenders inside and out.

No such strikes like this one that was hammered home versus Queen Park Rangers last campaign have occurred this season, however, as the former Celtic man remains goalless from 16 league contests.

He has only started seven of these named games though, with Corberan hopeful that more consistent game time for the electric winger in a congested fixture period could reawaken his best for the promotion candidates.

The Spaniard will also want Fellows to reach the heights he knows he’s capable of moving forward, having started the season like a runaway train with three assists picked up from three, only to amass four after.

But, both Fellows and Johnston certainly have enough in their ongoing bank to justify their inclusions in Corberan’s main XI.

Whereas, it could be up for debate whether this soon-to-be out-of-contract face is one he should be striving to keep around, as a decision on his future becomes more paramount by the day.

Molumby's future at West Brom

A regular in the treatment room last season, Jayson Molumby will just be pleased – when thinking about his situation short-term – that he is getting way more minutes in the here and now when injury-free.

The Republic of Ireland international has started 13 contests for his playoff-chasing team so far in the Championship, with his display in the aforementioned Coventry success somewhat standing out, considering the Baggies number eight only misplaced three of his 63 passes alongside winning four duels.

But, as West Brom know all too well when losing the likes of Okay Yokuslu at the end of the 2023/24 season, nobody in the Baggies ranks is irreplaceable, with a growing possibility that the ex-Brighton and Hove Albion man could just walk away for nothing this summer.

This wouldn’t be the end of the world for West Brom, who made do without their Irishman for large spells of last campaign, with Corberan also well accustomed to this situation of having to be quick on his feet when losing individuals who have had their contracts run out.

Corberan certainly values his “animal” – as he’s described him in the past – which saw him win an impressive eight duels versus Sheffield United in the middle of the month, but his excessive wage could also be a stumbling block as to whether he sticks around past this coming summer.

Amazingly, his excessive £17.3k-per-week salary seems him earn just a fraction more than Josh Maja, whilst also bettering both Johnston and Fellows on weekly income too, who earn a lesser £10k-per-week and £6k-per-week respectively.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

It wouldn’t be the best-case scenario for West Brom to lose another presence for zilch, but the Baggies have been here before and managed to dress their wounds appropriately, with Molumby one that might head for the exit door very soon if talks don’t speed up.

Perhaps cashing in in January would be a wiser approach, rather than risk losing him on a free next summer…
