Profit Players: Everton’s 2009 capture of Seamus Coleman continues to be a bargain fee a decade on

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Everton’s relationship with Seamus Coleman was one which began in January 2009, when the Toffees splashed out £150,000 (extratime.ie) to snap up a then 20-year-old right-back from Sligo Rovers ahead of competition for his signature from Celtic, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town.

David Moyes would hand Coleman his Premier League debut 297 days later as a late substitute for Johnny Heitinga against Bolton Wanderers, and 3,628 days on, Coleman remains a key man at Goodison Park, making his fee a bargain even when the Blues’ defence is not at its best.

Making his 296th outing for Everton across all competitions on Saturday against Manchester City (TransferMarkt), Coleman was one of few Toffees men to stand out for the right reasons as Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions picked their way through a faltering Blues defence.

Michael Keane was caught out of position for Gabriel Jesus’ opener by playing the Brazilian onside, while Lucas Digne – Everton’s 2018/19 Player of the Year – was run ragged by Riyad Mahrez and was fortunate not to have seen referee Michael Oliver point to the spot for a collision with Kevin de Bruyne in the second-half.

Coleman, meanwhile, was not without fault but showed why he is still the man Marco Silva names at right-back, by rolling back the years to assist Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a marauding adventure down the right-hand side – a goal which would have been his without the former England under-21 international poaching on the line with a diving header.

It has been a while since Coleman last showed himself as the creative, overlapping full-back that dazzled under Roberto Martinez on the opposing flank to Leighton Baines, and left many in awe when he outfoxed Santi Cazorla to delight the Goodison Park faithful as Everton beat Arsenal 3-0 in April 2014.

Injuries have been a regular plight of the Republic of Ireland captain’s career since then, with the 2017/18 campaign particularly short-lived with just 12 outings to his name across all competitions after fracturing his leg.

Saturday showed what Coleman is all about when on song, though, as he saw the weaknesses of a Fernandinho/Nicolas Otamendi centre-back partnership with Oleksandr Zinchenko at full-back to attack title-chasing Manchester City, and ended the day with more successful dribbles to his name than any other player on the pitch. (WhoScored)

Mahrez and Rodri led the Citizens’ charge for dribbles with two each – the same number as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabian Delph – but neither were a match for Coleman, who recorded eight successful dribbles from 10 vaunts down the wing, according to WhoScored data.

The 30-year-old, who has started 66) of any Everton player against City on Saturday, and the second-most successful tackles (three) – the most on the Blues’ right-hand side, with Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi both recording none.

Coleman’s career may be winding down more so than it is gearing up, but the experienced defender still has years left in him, and is now worth substantially more than the fee Everton paid a decade ago with TransferMarkt touting the Republic of Ireland leader at £13.5million – a 900% mark-up.

Everton fans discuss whether Jose Mourinho should replace Marco Silva

Everton fans on Twitter are split on whether or not they would like to see Jose Mourinho replace Marco Silva as the club’s manager. Mourinho has been out of a managerial job since being sacked by Manchester United last season just before Christmas.

The former Real Madrid manager spent £400m on 11 players at United and left his post when the club were sixth in the Premier League but closer to the relegation zone in terms of their points tally.

As of now, Everton are in the same league position they were in when Ronald Koeman was sacked, and the club are clearly in desperate need of someone with previous winning experience to help them achieve Farhad Moshiri’s aims of Champions League football.

Mourinho has proved his worth around the continent for nearly two decades and has won three league titles in England, with his most recent domestic trophy coming in the 2017 League Cup win with the Red Devils.

Everton have not won a major trophy since 1995, reaching just the one FA Cup final since then. So, perhaps hiring a man with eight major trophies in England isn’t such a bad idea.

Here’s what Toffees fans have been saying about the out-of-work Portuguese boss…

Nottingham Forest looking to sign diamond in the rough Ilyas El Khabchi

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to a report from TeamTalk, Nottingham Forest are closing in on a deal to sign French midfielder Ilyas El Khabchi.

What’s the word?

The report states that the 21-year-old has been on trial at the City Ground, having been released from French fifth-tier side Jura Dolois, and has clearly done enough to impress boss Sabri Lamouchi if they are considering turning that trial into a permanent deal for the rest of the campaign.

Whilst he may not be a household name in England, that should not put fans off straight away. N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez were both plucked from the French leagues despite not being well known on these shores, and they’ve both since gone on to win Premier League titles.

According to TeamTalk, Lamouchi is keen to test El Khabchi at U23 level before potentially promoting him to the senior squad. So where would he fit into the system at Nottingham Forest, should he eventually make his way up to the starting XI?

Goal threat stands out

Whilst a lot isn’t known about El Khabchi, at least we know that he is an attacking midfielder, and based on his records from GlobalSportsArchive, we also know that he has a goal in his back pocket, with a record of 13 goals in 35 games for Jura Dolois. Contrast that to only two assists in the same time span, and it’s clear that he is very much a finisher rather than a creator.

If scoring goals is more his forte than setting them up, then he should be able to fit in the current Forest 4-2-3-1 system right behind Lewis Grabban in the middle of the attacking midfield three.

It’s obviously difficult to tell whether or not he’ll be able to replicate his form from France in the Championship or how long it’d take him to do so.

But if he can, perhaps he’ll be able to take some of the pressure off Grabban as the team’s main goal threat by chipping in every now and again, potentially through exploiting the space Forest’s front-man creates when occupying defenders.

Everton’s abysmal record makes signing Moussa Dembele an absolute must

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Football Insider, Everton have a ‘strong interest’ in former Fulham striker Moussa Dembele and are set to battle with other Premier League clubs for the signature of the £40m-rated attacker.

What’s the word, then? The report claims that Dembele is willing to leave Lyon for a return to English football, and the former Celtic man regards a transfer back to England as a logical step in his career. This news should come as a major boost for Everton as the club needs young, proven goalscorers to lead the line for them for years to come. However, a fee has not been reported, although money has not been a worry for the Blues in recent years having spent £50m on Richarlison and £45m on Gylfi Sigurdsson. Brands must do everything he can

Everton have struggled tremendously on the goalscoring front this season, registering just six goals in eight Premier League games, which has helped put them inside the relegation zone.

Players who are looked at for goals, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have far from pulled their weight this campaign. Both forwards have just two league goals each so far, which is especially alarming considering the Brazilian’s brilliant form last season when he netted 13.

As for Calvert-Lewin, the former Sheffield United man has struggled in front of goal ever since he swapped the Blades for Merseyside. The 22-year-old has just 21 goals in 102 appearances for the Toffees, which is a shadow of what Dembele has managed at Celtic and Lyon over the years.

The Frenchman bagged an incredible 51 goals and provided 18 assists in 94 appearances for the Hoops, helping the club win back to back domestic treble’s from 2016 to 2018.

Dembele was also the club’s leading goalscorer in his debut season at Celtic, which came a year after he scored 15 times in 43 Championship outings for Fulham at just 19. This proved to be an extremely important figure in helping the Cottagers avoid the drop to League One, as they finished 20th.

Since his move to Lyon, the 6-foot striker has continued the form he showed in Great Britain over in France. 26 goals in 56 appearances, which includes six in eight Ligue 1 games so far, proves he will be a very worthy addition to the Everton side.

Marco Silva’s side are desperate for a prolific goalscorer right now, and Marcel Brands must do everything he can to make Dembele his next marquee signing.

Calvert-Lewin isn’t cutting it and Richarlison needs help to get him back to his best, and this French star could be the answer.

Juventus fans react to match-winning performance from Spurs target Paulo Dybala

Juventus scraped a win at home to Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League but they wouldn’t have been able to do so without the valuable contribution of Paulo Dybala.

The Argentine scored twice in three minutes late on to secure all three points for the Italian outfit, proving why he is highly sought after.

Spurs were interested in the playmaker over the summer and are still reportedly monitoring him, despite complications arising over his image rights which prevented a deal from being completed before the previous transfer window slammed shut in August.

Dybala now has three goals and two assists in nine games this season and is still clearly an important player in Maurizio Sarri’s side, as without him they may have fallen to a shock defeat on Tuesday.

Many Juventus fans are loving the contribution he made and hope he stays at the club amid speculation that Sarri wanted to sell him, with his first strike particularly earning accolades from the fan base.

Here are some of the reactions from Juventus supporters to Dybala turning around his team’s fortunes.

West Ham fans want Nathan Holland in the first team

Nathan Holland scored twice as West Ham United’s Under-23 side recorded a 4-0 win over Stoke City Under-23s in the Premier League 2 on Monday night.

The 21-year-old featured in West Ham’s EFL Cup clash with Oxford United at the end of September but has not been involved in the Premier League this season.

His performance on Monday night made a huge impression on a number of the club’s fans, though, and some have even called for head coach Manuel Pellegrini to include the attacker against Sheffield United in the Premier League this weekend.

The Blades will head to the London Stadium full of confidence after a 1-0 win over Arsenal on Monday night, making it an even tougher test for the Hammers.

Holland has only made two first-team appearances for West Ham since arriving from Everton in the middle of the 2016/17 campaign.

However, many of the supporters want him to be involved in the senior squad going forward.

Pablo Fornals’ struggle continues in West Ham’s draw with Sheffield United

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Ham dominated for large spells on Saturday and, but for some poor decision-making from Manuel Pellegrini, they could have taken all three points from the game.

The Hammers enjoyed 61% possession but the match was finely poised after Lys Mousset equalised for the visitors with around 20 minutes to go, and though the Chilean was right to look towards his substitute’s bench, he turned to the wrong man to turn things around.

Pablo Fornals struggled to make the kind of impact his manager and the home crowd were hoping for, with just eight touches in the more than 15 minutes he spent on the pitch, including stoppage time.

As a result, he failed to influence the match in West Ham’s favour, and was careless throughout, managing a pass accuracy of just 60%, which did at least support Pellegrini’s decision to start Robert Snodgrass ahead of him.

He did fire in one cross that almost allowed the Scot to slide the ball home, but his lack of contribution underlines the worrying lack of options on the Hammers’ bench.

Underwhelming

Fornals has underwhelmed so far no matter how his manager has tried to use him.

He is failing to make a significant contribution whether he starts games or is subbed on, and Pellegrini must be wondering how he can extract the best form out of the Spaniard.

The decision to play the 5ft 10 man at right midfield against Everton was a puzzling one, as Andriy Yarmolenko has been in fine form with three goals this term, and provided the assist for West Ham’s goal against Sheffield United.

By comparison, the Spaniard has failed to contribute directly to a single goal, and has managed just 0.6 key passes and 0.4 successful dribbles per game.

Such a return is not good enough for a side looking to improve upon last season’s tenth-placed finish.

The longer Fornals continues to underperform, the greater the scrutiny that will be heaped on Pellegrini, as so far Sebastien Haller is the only one of his summer signings to make any kind of significant impact.

Nottingham Forest fans hail Yuri Ribeiro after Luton Town victory

Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, meaning they moved back into a playoff position.

Lewis Grabban latched onto Tiago Silva’s through ball just before half-time to coolly slot past the Hatters’ goalkeeper before Sammy Ameobi fired home from Joe Lolley’s cross to double their advantage.

The home side pulled one back through Callum McManaman as he curled one round an out-stretched Brice Samba.

Sabri Lamouchi’s men had lost both of their last two matches, and couldn’t play last weekend due to adverse weather conditions causing a waterlogged pitch, so it was a perfect response to kickstart November.

The 47-year-old opted for Yuri Ribeiro over Jack Robinson at left-back, and his decision paid off, as seen with the reaction from the City Ground faithful on social media following the game.

One supporter called him an ‘unbelievable’ player who needs to be starting games week in week out, while another labelled him the ‘Portugal Gareth Bale.’

A further member of the visiting crowd stated that the 22-year-old really stood out in the Forest XI with one more believing he was ‘absolutely class.’

Southampton fans react as Cedric Soares reveals his desire to leave

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Cedric Soares revealed in an interview with The Telegraph that he plans to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old – signed from Sporting Lisbon for £4.7m – spent the second half of last season on loan at Inter Milan, but has since returned to St Mary’s to make five appearances this term.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, the 33-cap Portugal international has made a pretty big revelation in stating his desire to leave when his terms run out.

“I have just this season left. Right now after this season I think I am going to make another step and see what is the best for me. It’s a great opportunity and it’s something (being out-of-contract) that maybe happens once in your life for a player.”

One supporter said that they’re “not worried” about Cedric leaving, stating that it might actually encourage the south coast side to sign some full-backs “for once” – The Athletic reveal that the Saints are targeting reinforcements at centre-back and full-back in the New Year.

‘Southampton are understood to be eyeing up reinforcements at centre-back and full-back in the New Year, with one agent describing the team as a “mess at the back”.’

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

West Ham fans miss Dimitri Payet after Marseille brace

Dimitri Payet scored twice as Marseille recorded a 2-1 win over Lyon on Sunday, and a number of West Ham United fans quickly took to social media to air their views.

The 32-year-old’s first of the night came from the penalty spot, whilst his second was a super finish into the bottom corner just before the interval.

Payet, who turned out for West Ham between 2015 and 2017, has now managed four goals in nine league appearances this season.

West Ham, on the other hand, are currently on a run of seven games without in a win in all competitions following Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Burnley.

The Hammers are actually without a victory in the Premier League since beating Manchester United at the London Stadium towards the end of September.

And the fact that Payet was producing some magic at the weekend did not improve the mood of some of the West Ham supporters.
