Tottenham fans hail Harry Winks as midfielder continues to impress

[ad_pod ]Tottenham Hotspur’s summer purchase of Tanguy Ndombele means that there is pressure on Harry Winks when it comes to a starting role in Mauricio Pochettino’s first XI.Winks was named in the starting side against Aston Villa on Saturday but interestingly it was the England international – rather than Ndombele or Moussa Sissoko – who was taken off to allow Christian Eriksen to enter the field.Whether the 23-year-old will be a key feature of Spurs’ first XI this season or a player who dips in and out remains to be seen. However, judging by the reaction of the club’s fans on social media, the midfielder has to start every week due to his unique skill set.Indeed, Tottenham recently posted a clip of Winks in action against Villa at the weekend, which brought a strong response from the Spurs supporters on social media.A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Tottenham outcast Marcus Edwards nearing Udinese move

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Marcus Edwards is nearing a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Udinese, per TuttoUdinese.

What’s the word?

The attacking midfielder, long hyped as a jewel of Spurs’ academy, has struggled to live up to his billing.

Compared with Lionel Messi by manager Mauricio Pochettino prior to his debut against Gillingham in the League Cup, that cameo remains Edwards’ only senior appearance for the club.

And the report now states that he has arrived in Italy ahead of a move to the Serie A club.

Edwards spent last season on loan at Dutch club Excelsior but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Eredivisie.

Clean break

Edwards’ deal expires at the end of this season and one feels that Spurs will be glad to get rid of him.

He has done very little to live up to his potential, and even his loan spells have left much to be desired.

A return of two goals and four assists in 28 appearances at Excelsior hardly set the world alight, while he also played a total of six minutes when at Championship club Norwich City.

Allowing him to move on and attempt to recapture the form that saw him billed as one of the country’s most promising young talents makes sense for Spurs.

Time, it feels, is running out for him to become the footballer that many believed he could be.

West Bromwich Albion: Slaven Bilic persuaded star to remain at the Hawthorns this season

Slaven Bilic persuaded young star Rekeem Harper to remain at the Hawthorns this season, the Croatian manager has revealed.

Bilic revealed that he had multiple talks with the youngster about staying at West Bromwich Albion despite the fact his contract had run out at the club.

The news comes amid speculation surrounding the future of Oliver Burke, who after featuring in the first three games of the season, hasn’t played a single minute since.

According to the Express and Star, there is a possibility that the 25-year-old could be loaned out abroad, however, Bilic has said he is planning for him to stay.

Harper played a bit-part role at the Hawthorns last season, playing in just 13 league starts. However, he has shown his ability in a few of the games.

His performances saw him linked with many big clubs in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic among the outfits reportedly interested in signing the youngster.

Indeed, his ability on the ball showed in a key Championship fixture last season against promoted Norwich City. Harper started the game in central midfield in a 4-3-3 formation and completed 83.3% of his take-ons (via Total Football Analysis).

His ability on the ball is further backed up by the number of dribbles he averaged last season, 1.2, which was the fifth-highest at the club (via WhoScored).

He clearly has a decent amount of technical ability on the ball, which suggests that Bilic was right to keep a hold of him this summer. Harper had the second-highest pass completion rate in the Championship for West Brom. This showed his ability to retain possession of the ball when compared to more experienced central midfielders like Jake Livermore and Chris Brunt, who averaged less (via WhoScored).

Harper has great ability as shown last season, and it’s a blessing he is remaining at West Brom this season.

Nottingham Forest’s new loan signing is rather perplexing

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Earlier this week, Nottingham Forest were rather busy on deadline day letting four players depart the club, including the £8m sale of Arvin Appiah.

Though, it has been their business from last month’s deadline which has caught the news this week.

A player named Marios Siampanis appeared on the club’s website as a member of the U23 squad.

The 19-year-old was named on the bench for three U23 matches over the past month before finally being granted a start last week – though; there has been no announcement of his arrival anywhere.

Apart from here.

It appears as if Forest have indeed added a fifth goalkeeper to their ranks, albeit on loan, and for the youth team.

Even if he isn’t going to feature for Sabri Lamouchi’s senior side, it raises question marks over whether or not they have learned from previous mistakes.

The Reds boss has already brought in Aro Muric on loan from Manchester City, who is competing with Brice Samba for that number one spot, with the latter seemingly winning the job currently – he is averaging 6.83 compared to the Kosovan’s meagre 6.11, per WhoScored.

There are also still players at the City Ground who are just nowhere near getting a chance, even between the sticks, such as Costel Pantilimon so to make yet another signing in that area seems rather perplexing.

This is because Forest have such a large squad, an error they are still feeling the effect of from Lamouchi’s predecessors.

The Greek youngster has only joined on loan, which appears strange in itself to only temporarily have a player in the youth team.

All in all, it makes this signing seem like a continuity from managers and staff of years gone by, something the Algerian needs to eradicate.

To be fair to him, he has taken steps in doing so seeing the likes of Daryl Murphy and Jason Cummings leave – but it’s just not enough.

Rangers fans discuss transfer links to Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio

[ad_pod ]

Some Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the news that Italy international Claudio Marchisio is of interest to the club as a potential transfer target.

RMC Sport report that Marchisio, who made 389 appearances for Juventus across a 13-year stay in Turin, is of interest to Steven Gerrard, although the Scottish giants face competition from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.

33-year-old Marchisio most recently played for Russian Premier League side Zenit, although he is now a free agent – the 55-cap Italy international is arguably the most high profile player available for free out there right now.

It would represent a major coup from Rangers if they somehow managed to pull this transfer off.

One fan said that it would even be ‘the biggest coup in Scottish football’, whilst another thinks that Marchisio would be a fine signing purely based on the fact he netted against arch-rivals Celtic in the Champions League.

Let’s take a look at what else the Rangers fans on Twitter have been saying…

Arsenal fans praise Reiss Nelson following late England strike

[ad_pod ]

A number of Arsenal fans have lavished praise on Reiss Nelson after the youngster scored the winner for England’s Under-21 side against Turkey Under-21s.

The actual goal will not be up for any awards at the end of the season, but it was a hugely important strike from the youngster as Aidy Boothroyd’s side claimed a 3-2 win.

Nelson spent last season on loan in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim – scoring seven times in 29 appearances for the German club in all competitions.

The 19-year-old has been rewarded with a spot in the Arsenal first team this season – already clocking up 116 minutes of Premier League football for Unai Emery’s side.

And finding the back of the net against Turkey on Friday night would have done the attacker’s confidence no harm at all.

As expected, a number of Arsenal supporters have taken to social media to lavish praise on the academy product – a selection of which can be seen below:

Leeds’ Mateusz Klich posts on Instagram after netting penalty against Barnsley

The Pole captioned his post saying ‘It could be 12 yards as well’, nodding towards the fact that his trademark strikes usually come from the edge of the area or just outside the box.

Klich isn’t usually the designated penalty taker for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but the Argentine called upon him to net from the spot against Barnsley and he duly obliged.

One player who was seemingly very impressed by Klich’s penalty was Kalvin Phillips. The midfielder commented on his teammate’s post complimenting him on his goal, along with three snowflake emojis – hinting that Klich was cool under pressure.

Leeds defender Ben White hailed despite dropped points

[ad_pod ]

Leeds suffered a disappointing draw against Derby at the weekend as they conceded just their fourth league goal of the campaign.

The Whites spent the majority of the game with the ball at their feet, registering over 60% of the possession.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men rarely had any defending to do until the final 15 minutes when three of Derby’s five shots were taken.

Ben White was again in the defence but despite dropped points, Leeds supporters still found a reason to rave over the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August.

One fan determined that he would play for England in the future while another suggested he would be at Manchester City in the next two years.

A further individual went as far as saying he was the best defender they’ve seen at Elland Road since a certain Rio Ferdinand. White was also hailed as top class.

The 21-year-old signed on loan from Brighton during the transfer window and has won 2.9 aerial duels per game this term. He’s also been hugely successful with the ball at his feet, completing 88.2% of his passes.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Liverpool fans divided over Georginio Wijnaldum’s RB Salzburg display

Liverpool fans are completely split on the performance of Georginio Wijnaldum, who endured a mixed evening against Red Bull Salzburg.

While it was probably the match of the Champions League so far for spectators, we’re sure Liverpool’s midfielders didn’t enjoy their 4-3 win on Wednesday night too much.

Indeed, the game was enthralling and end-to-end, meaning Jordan Henderson and Wijnaldum were left chasing shadows for much of their time on the pitch.

Both players were hooked around the hour mark, and while fans have slammed the skipper for his display, the 5 foot 9 Dutchman’s performance has divided the Anfield faithful.

On the one hand, he completed 100% of his passes during the match. However, none of those were key passes, and some fans have crucified the midfielder for playing too safe.

He made very little impact defensively either, making just one tackle, no interceptions, no clearances and no blocks, per WhoScored.

Take a look at some of the divided reaction down below…
