Everton could land their own Declan Rice by signing £26m "destroyer"

Everton's recent transfer dealings have proven to be somewhat of a success, working against the notion that the Toffees only sign duds that have called Goodison Park home for a short period of time before packing their bags after the move completely flops.

Abdoulaye Doucoure's addition to the ranks back in 2020 has proven to be an inspired bit of business, the ex-Watford man now a consistent performer for the Merseyside club with the 30-year-old midfielder even popping up with three goals in the Premier League this season.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

Moreover, his regular partner in the centre of the park in James Garner has also been a shrewd acquisition – leaving behind boyhood club Manchester United last year for a move to the nearby Toffees, slotting into the starting lineup now more times than not at the expense of an ageing Idrissa Gueye.

Even with the central midfielders at Goodison performing valiantly at this moment in time, Sean Dyche could well be eyeing up young Brazilian sensation Gabriel Moscardo as another holding midfield option, with a whole host of clubs queuing up to tussle for the 18-year-old's services alongside the Blues.

Everton transfers latest

The current Corinthians man is likely to be subject to manic interest from a plethora of suitors this coming January, the teenager linked with moves to Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Fulham and more, according to TEAMTalk.

As the report noted, Everton are also in pursuit of the Brazil U23 international, stating that the Toffees are monitoring the youngster's progress amid the desire to raid South America for some 'clever signings' in the New Year.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

If they were to land this highly rated teenager – who could command a fee of £26m – come January, Dyche could have his very own Declan Rice potentially, with Moscardo compared to the Arsenal star of late – as per GOAL's Krishan Davis.

How Gabriel Moscardo compares to Declan Rice

Referred to as a "destroyer" by scout Ben Mattinson when describing Moscardo's style of play, the Brazilian's other varied attributes bear striking similarities also to the former West Ham United skipper, with the aforementioned Davis writing last month:

'Nominally a defensive midfielder who compliments his fine reading of the game by breaking the lines with lung-busting forward runs with the ball at his feet, the parallels are clear to see with Arsenal and England star Rice.'

The Corinthians' number 44 can dominate games centrally, confident with the ball at his feet going forward whilst also unafraid to launch himself into a tackle if necessary – as displayed by his five yellow cards already this campaign from just 15 league matches, a fierce 'destroyer' in the middle of the pitch.

Gabriel-moscardo-chelsea

Over the last year for his Brazilian employers, Moscardo has averaged 3.08 tackles per 90 minutes whilst also carrying out further defensive work 2.76 blocks per match to shore up his side as an anchor-like figure, via FBRef.

It's his forays forward however that draw the most direct comparisons to Rice, the former Hammers man is well-known for his assuredness to travel with the ball in tight areas coming out from the back – completing an average of 2.22 progressive carries per match over the last year for both West Ham and the Gunners.

The 18-year-old is so highly thought of as his statistics in the same area mirror the formidable Arsenal man, albeit Moscardo is playing in his native Brazil and not in the intense Premier League.

He could however be ready for a top-flight move imminently if he continues to excel with Corinthians, averaging 1.80 successful take-ons each game over the last 365 days for the South American giants, whilst coming in at a lesser but still impressive 1.69 progressive carries compared to his experienced counterpart.

It looks ever more likely that Moscardo will be upping and leaving his native Brazil in January – and with potential added investment from 777 Partners – Everton will hope they can shock everyone in landing the young midfielder ahead of major interest from top clubs.

"Terrific" star among 3 players Wolves could sell to fund January spree

Wolverhampton Wanderers seem to be on the path to brighter days thanks to Gary O’Neil, who took charge of the Midlands club just four days prior to their 2023/24 Premier League opener after a trialling summer at Molineux.

The Englishman faced an uphill battle to get his depleted squad firing in the top flight after the club were struck with the revelation of the extent of their financial fair play (FFP) struggles, however things finally look to be on the up for the Old Gold.

Despite sitting comfortably in 12th in the table after 12 games played, O’Neil claimed that his side are “£80m short” in quality after the sale-ridden summer, to which some of the Midlands side’s heroes were offloaded to generate vital profit.

Looking ahead to the January transfer window, Wolves are expected to bring in “one or two” signings at most, according to The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, who explained that the club will still have “restrictions on spending” in the winter due to FFP constraints.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Madeley added that Wolves will prioritise their search for a striker, with the format of incomings set to be through loan deals with an option or obligation to buy, with next summer set to be a far “freer to spend” environment from an FFP point of view.

That being said sales could also come in January, which like the summer climate, could free up further funds to welcome new additions to the squad, with some players having already been mooted for a potential exit.

1 Fabio Silva

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

With speculation leaning towards the subject of Wolves targeting a striker in January, it could mean the end of the road for 21-year-old Fabio Silva.

The Portuguese prospect arrived in the Midlands in 2020, arriving from Porto for a mammoth fee of £35.6m at the age of just 18.

Despite making the headlines back in Portugal for his goalscoring proficiency in Porto’s youth side, the forward has had a hard time adapting to life at Wolves, leaving his future questionable.

In 75 appearances for the Old Gold’s senior team, Silva has netted just five goals, paving the way for the club to send their promising asset out on loan in the 2022/23 campaign to gain experience.

After scoring 16 goals while representing both Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven in two separate temporary spells last season, there was hope that the youngster could return to Molineux and replicate such streaks.

Once lauded as “terrific” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the Portugal U21 sensation is still in the process of answering questions regarding his suitability in the Premier League, with transfer insider Dean Jones telling GIVEMESPORT that his time in the Midlands could soon be up.

Jones explained that “nothing is going his [Silva’s] way” in England, adding that it “wouldn't surprise” him if talks arose in January about the forward moving away from Wolves, making him a player that could be axed this winter.

While the striker’s value has decreased to €16.2m (£14m), far from the fee the club paid to obtain him, selling him for the right price could free up funds for O’Neil’s side to seek more suitable candidates to lead the line in his place.

2 Pablo Sarabia

Just a year after his arrival at Wolves, Pablo Sarabia could be another player targeted for a sale this winter after failing to show his best form in order to secure consistent game time.

Signed from Paris Saint-Germain in January, the Spaniard has struggled to find a place in O’Neil’s side due to the emergence of Pedro Neto in his favoured right-wing position.

In 21 appearances, the 31-year-old has scored twice, with his second goal coming earlier this month thanks to his match-winning cameo against Spurs in the Premier League.

Having only started two games in the league this season, it’s unlikely that the manager will see Sarabia in his future plans, with his age and inability to compete with the first-choice names in the squad making him a potential point of sale in January.

Rumours surrounding his future surfaced in September, when journalist Ben Jacobs relayed that Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq were considering signing the former Spain international.

According to Football Transfers, the Real Madrid academy graduate has an expected transfer value of €10.6m (£9m), which could indicate a slight profit from the £4.4m Wolves paid PSG for his services earlier this year – if the right buyer is identified.

3 Pedro Neto

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Perhaps not a shock, Pedro Neto could be the main source of profit from Wolves if the club were to sell the winger in the near future.

The Portuguese forward has started the 2023/24 campaign in explosive fashion, recording seven assists and topping the Premier League charts in that area to prevail as the league’s top creator so far.

It’s taken a while for the 23-year-old to find his stride in England, with successive injuries slowing his progression, however he finally looks to have found his place under O’Neil.

Due to his form, the winger has been linked with a move away from Molineux, with Football Transfers naming Arsenal among the potential candidates who hope to swipe the dynamic playmaker from Wolves’ grasp in the future.

While the Old Gold would obviously prefer to keep hold of their top talent, the report speculated that the club value their star at a fee as high as £70m, prompting the question as to whether such a profit would sanction his exit.

On deadline day, O’Neil reluctantly bid farewell to Matheus Nunes, with the £53m offer too tempting to refuse, allowing the boss to welcome some much-needed quality to increase the depth of his squad.

An offer of a similar value could potentially sway Neto and Wolves to part ways, as the squad remains low on numbers, however the Portugal international reportedly told the club that he would not be pushing for an exit in January.

Only time will tell if the winger will stick to his word in the New Year, particularly if another club expresses serious interest in his services with an attractive fee to pair with it.

Kagiso Rabada skirts danger with Chris Lynn send-off

The South Africa fast bowler is currently on seven demerit points, and if he gets one more he could be suspended for four limited-overs matches or two Tests

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Nov-2018Kagiso Rabada could be skirting with danger with his send-off to Australian batsman Chris Lynn in the second ODI in Adelaide, if he is sanctioned under the ICC Code of Conduct by match referee Jeff Crowe. Rabada is currently on seven demerit points, and if he gets one more he could be suspended for four limited-overs internationals or two Tests, whichever is first. The incident occurred in the 27th over of Australia’s innings. Lynn had hit Rabada for a six and three fours off the first four balls of the over, after which he gloved a hook to the wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and was out for 44 off 44 balls. Rabada appeared to say a few words in the vicinity of Lynn during his celebration of the wicket.

“Bit of a send-off at the end, I don’t mind it at all,” Lynn said of his dismissal at the end of the innings.Earlier this year, Rabada was at the centre of a major controversy when he was hit with a two-Test ban for a shoulder brush with Steven Smith in Australia’s first innings of the Port Elizabeth Test, but subsequently won an appeal and got the ban overturned. Rabada had initially been given three demerit points for the offence – taking his tally to eight – but the severity of the indiscretion was downgraded after his appeal and he was eventually given only one demerit point, which meant he was only on seven demerit points.Rabada had been on five demerit points before the Port Elizabeth Test. In addition to the one demerit point for the Smith shoulder-brush, Rabada was also given a demerit point for his send-off to David Warner in the second innings of that Test. The match referee in the Port Elizabeth Test was Jeff Crowe, who is incidentally the match referee for the ongoing ODI between South Africa and Australia in Adelaide.

FA refuse to back down on Cup replay decision despite widespread backlash as governing body release statement explaining need for reform

The Football Association (FA) has released a fresh statement backing their decision to scrap FA Cup replays amid widespread backlash.

FA Cup replays have been axed completelyDisgruntled fans severely criticise the decisionFA insist on the need for reformsWHAT HAPPENED?

The FA's move signals a significant shift in the format of the historic tournament, with all rounds set to be played on weekends starting from the 2024-25 season, and replays abolished altogether. While the decision to scrap replays has sparked controversy, particularly among fans and clubs in the lower echelons of English football, the FA maintains that the move was necessary to ensure the sustainability of the tournament. The CEO of the advocacy group Fair Game criticised the FA's decision, describing it as "another nail in the coffin" for the already crumbling football pyramid.

Nonetheless, the governing body remains resolute in its new decision. They clarified that discussions regarding the calendar for the 2024-25 season had been ongoing for over a year, with representatives from the Premier League and the English Football League (EFL) actively involved in the process. The decision to eliminate FA Cup replays was reportedly a topic of early deliberation, with consensus reached among all parties that replays were no longer viable.

WHAT THE FA SAID

A fresh statement put out by FA read: "We have listened to the concerns expressed over the last 24 hours, and would like to outline the approval process which was undertaken for the 2024-25 professional game football calendar. We have been discussing the calendar for the 2024-25 season with the Premier League and EFL for well over a year.

"Removing Emirates FA Cup replays was discussed in the early meetings and all parties accepted that they could not continue. The discussions then focused on how to make all of our competitions stronger, despite having fewer dates available and wanting to maintain player welfare. The changes to the Emirates FA Cup achieve this by returning it to a weekend competition on every round, and ensuring that we have exclusive broadcast slots in an increasingly congested calendar."

DID YOU KNOW?

The FA emphasised its commitment to supporting clubs in the lower divisions by exploring alternative revenue streams.

The statement further read: "To clarify, we have also increased the number of Emirates FA Cup matches that will be broadcast in the early rounds, which will lead to additional guaranteed broadcast revenue for EFL and National League teams. Additionally, we review the prize money annually for the competition, together with representatives from the EFL and Premier League and will do the same for the 2024-25 season.

"The calendar for next season was approved last month by the Professional Game Board, which consists of four EFL representatives and four Premier League representatives and then by the FA Board, which includes Premier League, EFL, National Game and grassroots representation. This is the process we undergo every year to approve the calendar. We understand the concerns expressed over the last 24 hours, and we will be sharing more details with clubs very shortly to explain the additional revenue opportunities in the early rounds. We will keep this under review as the new calendar begins to ensure that EFL and National League clubs do not lose out."

We didn't bowl the right lengths consistently – SL bowling coach Ratnayake

Sri Lanka’s frontline quicks looked ordinary as a unit, taking 5 for 359 between them as New Zealand claimed total control of the first Test

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Wellington17-Dec-2018Though faced with a placid Basin Reserve track, Sri Lanka’s bowlers did not hit their lines and lengths consistently enough, as New Zealand amassed 578 and claimed total control of the first Test.Sri Lanka bowling coach Rumesh Ratnayake had expected better of his charges, who had shown signs of promise earlier this year in the West Indies, where they prospered with the big-swinging Dukes ball on pitches that gave bowlers a little more to work with. But in Wellington, the three frontline quicks looked ordinary as a unit, taking 5 for 359 between them. While Lahiru Kumara was the best of the trio, taking four of those wickets, Kasun Rajitha collected the worst figures, going wicketless from 34 overs and conceding 144.”We should’ve done better – I thought we didn’t hit the right areas and we didn’t bowl the lengths – which they did – consistently well,” Ratnayake said. “We bowled too short a length at times, and at others, it was right up like a half-volley. It wasn’t an [ideal] in-between thing. If you see the New Zealand bowlers, they’ve bowled a better length and a line in the second innings. Maybe the first innings you can say the wicket helped them. But if we had created a better line and a better length, it would have been a much happier day for me and the whole team.”Among the challenges Sri Lanka’s quicks face, is that as the team routinely fields three specialist spinners in home Tests, the fast bowlers rarely have the opportunity to play at home. This same pace-bowling trio bowled well together to win Sri Lanka a Test in Barbados in June, for example, but Kumara and Rajitha did not play in any of Sri Lanka’s five Tests since then.Ratnayake, though, refused to use that lack of match practice as an excuse.”It is a challenge for sure, but at this level we can’t be saying those things. We have to get ready for that. We’ve prepared for that. But I guess there’s nothing like the real thing of a test. Yes, they hadn’t played for six months now, but that shouldn’t be the excuse going forward. We should learn lessons very quickly from this Test. At least, there were more positives today for the bowlers than yesterday.”After Sri Lanka’s bowlers had been clattered around the Basin Reserve for the best part of five sessions, their top three failed to show resistance, and substantially worsened the visitors’ match situation. Sri Lanka went to stumps at 20 for 3, with two of those dismissals being the result of attacking strokes. Dimuth Karunaratne – generally the most reliable Sri Lanka batsman – played perhaps the worst shot of the three, hooking a Tim Southee delivery, to be caught at fine leg.”The batsmen made wrong decisions and we’re disappointed with that,” Ratnayake said. “But they’re more disappointed. You saw them looking down as they played those shots, especially Karunaratne.”

West Ham ready to make move to sign “warrior” for David Moyes in January

West Ham United are considering an approach to sign a defender who is currently playing his football in League One, according to a fresh report.

David Moyes' summer arrivals

The Irons recruited five fresh faces during the previous transfer window in the form of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, Andy Irving and Konstantinos Mavropanos, with all of the new signings putting pen to paper on a permanent basis.

Ahead of January though, David Moyes may want to bolster his ranks even further as he looks to secure as high a place as possible in the Premier League table, and he has highlighted a target from a lower division to increase his options at the heart of the backline.

Derby County centre-back Eiran Cashin will have reached the expiration of his deal at the end of the season (Derby contracts), meaning that the upcoming window could be the final opportunity for Paul Warne to cash in, should he not want to risk losing his prized asset for free.

The Rams academy graduate has established himself as his club’s overall best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.38 (WhoScored – Derby statistics), and the 22-year-old’s impressive form has brought him onto the radar at the London Stadium.

West Ham plotting swoop for Eiran Cashin

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham are interested in Cashin, but they aren’t alone in their pursuit with several other clubs also hoping to secure his services in January.

TEAMtalk can reveal that Derby County are set to lose their star defender Eiran Cashin in the January transfer window, with a host of clubs ready to make a move for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.

"West Ham, Burnley and Middlesbrough are all showing an interest, whilst Chris Wilder – who is taking charge at Sheffield United – is also keen on him.”

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Cashin is already a defensive "warrior"

At Derby, Cashin is currently averaging a remarkable 5.4 clearances and 5.2 aerial wins per game in League One, highlighting what a real rock he can be, not to mention the physical presence he provides both on and off the ground (WhoScored – Cashin statistics).

The Mansfield-born talent is also capable of getting involved with the action at the opposite end of the pitch with 17 involvements, 12 goals and five assists, to his name in 159 appearances since the start of his career (Transfermarkt – Cashin statistics).

The Pride Park colossus additionally only pockets £3.3k-per-week as it stands (Derby salaries), so that could make him a more than affordable option to purchase because he may be the lowest earner on the books (West Ham salaries), which is another attractive quality for the board to consider.

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Cashin is an “Irish Warrior” for his fighting spirit and determination to get stuck in when clearing the danger, so there’s no doubt that he could be a fantastic signing for Moyes and West Ham.

Yasir Shah fastest to 200 Test wickets, breaks 82-year-old record

The legspinner took just 33 Tests to reach the landmark as compared to Clarrie Grimmett’s 36

Osman Samiuddin06-Dec-20182:52

Is Yasir better than Ashwin and Lyon?

On the fourth morning of the final Test in Abu Dhabi against New Zealand, Yasir Shah did not merely break an 82-year-old record, he smashed it.By dismissing William Somerville roughly half an hour into the morning, he picked up his 200th Test wicket in just his 33rd Test. That breaks the record for the fastest to 200 Test wickets, so long held by another legspinner, Clarrie Grimmett who reached the mark in his 36th Test. The wicket came in trademark Yasir style, the key to it the pace at which it was bowled, breaking a little but hurrying onto Somerville’s pads. The batsmen had a discussion, but ultimately decided not to take a review.By then Yasir had already been engulfed by his team-mates, performing the in the process of acknowledging the landmark. As has been the case with so many of Pakistan’s greatest moments in the UAE, barely a handful of people were present at the ground to witness it.”When I started I never dreamed that I would get this record,” Yasir later said. “I was just playing cricket at the time and I didn’t even think I could play for Pakistan.”I thank Allah for this success. It was my dream to take 200 wickets and it came true today. I would like to dedicate the world record to my mother.”Given his form in this series it was inevitable Yasir would break the record at some point during the Test. And on the first day it looked as if he would have it wrapped by the afternoon. He took three quick wickets in the hour before lunch as New Zealand slipped from 70 for 1 to 72 for 4. But he was to pick up no more in that innings, Bilal Asif instead ending up with a five-for.Yasir Shah bathed in the warm glow of sunset•Getty ImagesAlready his 27th wicket of the series, with more batsmen to come, he could also break another Pakistan record, for most wickets in a three-Test series. That has been held by another legspinner, Abdul Qadir who took 30 wickets against England in 1987-88.This series has been an especially rich one for Yasir, and a welcome return to the wickets after an unusually quiet start to the season. Returning from a hip injury that forced him to miss the tour of Ireland and England earlier this year, Yasir looked understandably rusty against Australia last month. A relatively small haul of eight wickets in two Tests included the first time had gone wicketless in an innings in the UAE.But he has looked like the old Yasir again at times in this series and indeed in the second Test in Dubai, bowled as good a spell as he has ever bowled. He ended with 14 wickets in the Test, only the second Pakistani to take as many, after Imran Khan.As well as being the quickest to 200, Yasir was the joint second-fastest to 100 Test wickets (in 17 Tests) and the fastest Pakistani to 50 Test wickets (in nine Tests).

'Revolutionised the entire game' – Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer told he's 'on par' with Lionel Messi as most important player in football history

Neuer has cemented his position as a true legend of the game during his career, winning the World Cup with Germany and countless titles with Bayern Munich. The goalkeeper has also changed the perception of the role of goalkeeper due to his ability with the ball at his feet and willingness to come far off his line, bringing the term 'sweeper-keeper' into the mainstream.

Gomez, who played alongside Neuer for both club and country, has piled praise on the goalkeeper and claimed he has had as big an influence on modern football as Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar is widely considered to be the greatest player to ever grace the game and is currently plying his trade in the MLS with Inter Miami, where he has raised the profile of the league and attracted record crowds.

WHAT GOMEZ SAID

Former Germany international Gomez told 's 'Phrasenmäher' podcast: "I would put Manuel Neuer on par with Messi in terms of importance for the game. I don't even know if we are all aware of what we experienced with a goalkeeper who revolutionized the entire game. Only in 20 years will we realize this. He is the goalkeeper who made everyone realize that feet are as important as hands. The way he masters both is incredible."

Fabrizio Romano drops update on future of "battleship" wanted by Newcastle

Newcastle United have been handed a potential boost in their efforts to sign a defensive "battleship", according to a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Newcastle want January signings

The Magpies are expected to be in the market for new additions when the January transfer window opens next month, following a dreadful season in the injury department.

It has become almost laughable how many important players Eddie Howe is having to make do without, with Nick Pope's serious shoulder injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester United the latest major setback. He could now be sidelined for as long as four months, which could have a big impact on the season.

On top of all the injury concerns, Sandro Tonali's time as a Newcastle player has also got off to a disastrous start, with the Italian suspended for 10 months for breaching betting rules, bringing an end to his season before it had barely got underway.

While midfield targets seem to be on the cards for the Magpies, which is understandable given the lack of depth there after Tonali's ban, Howe could look to make defensive signings, too, not least because key centre-back Sven Botman has found himself in and out of the team this season.

Genoa central defender Radu Dragusin has emerged as a transfer target for Newcastle, while Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio is another who could head to St James' Park.

Jonathan Tah transfer update

Speaking to Caught Offside, Romano claimed that Newcastle transfer target Jonathan Tah could move to the Premier League in 2024, having been linked with the Magpies as recently as the middle of last month.

Jonathan Tah

"I’d keep an eye on Premier League clubs for Jonathan Tah. He’s under contract until 2025 at Bayer and sources tell me he could leave in 2024. He’s doing great; I can’t share info on precise club yet but there’s interest from Premier League."

Tah could be exactly what Newcastle are looking for at the heart of their defence, although it remains to be seen if a January move could happen, or if a switch to St James' Park may take place next summer instead.

The German is enjoying an excellent spell at Bayer Leverkusen currently, proving to be a hugely important player for Xabi Alonso's side and helping them top the Bundesliga, sitting three points clear of Bayern Munich. Tah's statistics highlight how much he is flourishing this season.

At 27, he is at a great age to join Newcastle and could make an immediate difference, given the experience he has, but there is also no reason why he shouldn't remain in his prime for the next four or five years. Tah has even been hailed as a "a real battleship" of a defender by Christoph Kramer in the past, and he could be the dominant presence that Howe needs moving forward, should he leave Leverkusen.
