Clarke worries about day-night Tests

Michael Clarke has raised doubts over the types of balls that could be used for day-night Tests and outlined his concerns about batting under lights

Cricinfo staff29-Jan-2010Michael Clarke has raised doubts over the types of balls that could be used for day-night Tests and outlined his concerns about batting under lights. Cricket Australia is trialling pink and white balls in domestic Second XI games this week as it attempts to find ones that can last for 80 overs. The organisation is desperately trying to prove it can host Tests that finish in the dark in an effort to lift crowds and television ratings, but the move is worrying some current players. “I would like to see the ball first, and where are we going to play the day-night Test matches?” Clarke, Australia’s vice-captain, said in the Australian. “Batting under lights in one-day cricket is much harder than batting during the day.”Conditions will dictate that, and they will have to try the day-night games in first-class cricket before Test cricket. I am interested to see how it pans out. If it can work it would be great for the game. The public would certainly find it easier for the games played during the week to come out and watch after work.”Simon Katich, the opener, said he was a traditionalist who preferred Tests during the day. “I guess the biggest issue playing in the afternoon and twilight period is the conditions can change a fair bit, particularly with a red ball,” he said in the Daily Telegraph. “Obviously that won’t be used, but they have to get the ball right because the contest is all about seeing it.”Katich made his Sheffield Shield debut at the Gabba in a day-night game when orange balls were trialled in the mid-1990s. “It was really good to see and it stayed really hard, which was only a drawback in conditions like Perth and the Gabba where wickets have a bit of life,” he said. “But the orange ball was fine and I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned to be used. There never seemed to be too many complaints with it.”Clarke and Katich were also against the idea of extending the domestic season by taking games to other parts of the country to accommodate a longer Twenty20 tournament. “The strength of Australian cricket since I’ve played the game for either New South Wales or Australia has been the first-class system,” Clarke said.”For me the priority is to make sure we don’t touch that or we don’t lose anything from that. If things are altered or improved that’s fantastic, but the first-class system we have is fantastic and that’s why we are so strong in all three forms of the game.”

David Turnbull drops Jota transfer claim

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull has dropped a claim regarding Jota’s potential permanent switch to Parkhead.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by the Daily Record, the 22-year-old Scotland international suggested that he and his teammates would love to see the Benfica loanee make a permanent move to Celtic in the January transfer window, as he and his colleagues have been highly impressed with the impact the winger has had during his short time in Glasgow thus far.

The report goes on to state that Ange Postecoglou’s side do hold an option to make the Portugal U21 international’s temporary deal a £6.2m permanent move this season, and Turnbull is clearly of the belief that the 22-year-old would be well worth the money.

Speaking about Jota’s transfer situation, the midfielder said: “We hope that he signs, but it’s up to them and the club to decide that. I’m sure the boys would be keen on him doing that anyway.

“He seems to be enjoying life in Glasgow, on the pitch you can see that. And away from the pitch, he seems to be enjoying it as well – apart from the weather. He seems to be loving life. Jota’s been absolutely flying and we are pleased for him.

“From the first minute he’s been excellent both on and off the ball and he’s been doing what he needs to do. He’s chipping in for the team by scoring goals and that has been excellent. It’s great for him and it’s great for the side.”

Fans will be delighted

Considering just how impressive Jota has been since his arrival at Parkhead back in August, the news that Turnbull and his teammates appear to very much be in favour of their club sealing a deal to sign the forward on a permanent basis is sure to have delighted the Celtic fanbase.

Indeed, over his 10 Scottish Premiership appearances this season, the £3.15m-rated man has already scored five goals, registered four assists and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of three shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the winger average a SofaScore match rating of 7.39, ranking him as the joint fifth-best performer in the top flight of Scottish football.

The £7.1k-per-week forward has also been in excellent form for the Hoops over his five Europa League appearances, scoring two goals, providing two assists and creating four big chances for his side, metrics which have seen him average a SofaScore match rating of 7.40.

As such, it would indeed appear as if Jota would be well worth the reported £6.2m he’d cost Celtic to sign permanently this winter, while the prospect of the winger remaining at Parkhead beyond the end of the current campaign is certainly something that will delight Bhoys fans.

Vieira must unleash Will Hughes v Everton

Patrick Vieira has a very important game coming up this weekend at Selhurst Park against Everton, where the Eagles could really do with taking all three points after losing their last three games.

The south Londoners currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, just six points clear of the relegation zone. Whilst not appearing to be in immediate danger of the drop currently, it would be reassuring for Vieira if his team could pick up a few more points to go into the New Year full of confidence.

One player who will be hoping to come in and make a positive impact on the team this weekend is Will Hughes. The next game against Everton could be the perfect opportunity to refresh the side and offer starts to players who haven’t had much chance to make an impact. Especially during the current losing streak, making some changes could inject a new lease of life into Vieira’s side on Sunday.

Hughes was signed this summer, completing a move from Watford to Palace in a three-year deal believed to be between £6m and £10m, but he has failed to get much game-time so far with only one appearance in the Premier League this term.

The £6.3m-rated gem sustained a minor back injury in early November and also competes with James McArthur for a spot in the team. However, the Scot has picked up a hamstring injury, so Vieira will need to shuffle the pack and could give Hughes a rare start this weekend.

Vieira has been full of praise for the 26-year-old upon his arrival to the club, saying: “He’s a player that we know quite well. He’s really comfortable on the ball. He’s a really good link with the play going forward. I’m really glad and really pleased to have him in the squad.”

Unfortunately for Palace, if they lose to Everton they could fall as far as 16th, should Southampton and Leeds take at least a point from their games this weekend, and this is a position that Vieira will be hoping to avoid, especially with the advantage of being at home.

Hughes could offer a fresh impetus to the midfield for the Eagles this weekend, and if picked he would have a point to prove to his manager as he seeks to gain a more regular spot in the team.

Petersen conquers Eden Gardens

Eden Gardens can be an intimidating venue but Alviro Peterson did not let its size and raucous crowds get to him on debut

N Hunter14-Feb-2010For years, Issac Petersen has driven members of the international media around in Port Elizabeth. During pleasant rides to hotels on the beautiful seafront, Issac talks about his son, Alviro, asking journalists to remember his name for the future. Now he can rest easy about marketing his son, who, at majestic Eden Gardens, became only the third batsman to score a century on Test debut for South Africa. With doubts persisting over Graeme Smith’s injured finger on the eve of the match, the team management had asked Petersen to mentally prepare himself for a debut. It was a smart move. “Yesterday, they told me [I was] in the team 99%,” Petersen said. “So I had the evening to really think it over, and visualise what I wanted to achieve out of it.”Sunday morning, when Graeme Smith called correctly at the toss for the second time in the series, Petersen’s wait was over. At 29, he had been running out of time to start his Test career only because he is a specialist opener. He had come into national reckoning in 2006 but the lack of an innings of impact kept him on the fringes of selection. Though he played a few ODIs, it wasn’t until England arrived in 2009 that Petersen got a real opportunity. Herschelle Gibbs’ downward spiral forced the selectors to think about alternatives and Petersen made a strong case for himself with three half-centuries in all three matches he played. Those innings were just an extension of his splendid form in domestic cricket. In the 2008-09 season Petersen, playing for Highveld Lions, stacked up 1376 runs in 15 matches, including six centuries, two of which came in the final-round game against the Titans. It was a South African record for most runs in a season, surpassing Hylton Ackerman (1373) and Barry Richards (1285). Ashwell Prince was behind Petersen with 1180 runs last year. Both Petersen and Prince grew up in the same neighbourhood in the northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth. They learned their cricket at the Gelvandale ground, which had frugal resources, and sharpened their reflexes by batting against tape ball on the streets. So it was fitting that Petersen replaced Prince as an opener, and the left-hander dropped down to his usual middle-order spot because Mark Boucher was unfit. Prince has been a reluctant opener, but the South African selectors, left with no option, kept him at the top.Petersen walked out to bat sporting the same smile he had when Graeme Smith presented him with the cap during the team huddle. He started with a boundary in his first over, flicking a loose delivery from Ishant Sharma. During the next four hours, there was a constant flow of innocuous deliveries from the Indians and Petersen, in the company of Hashim Amla, flayed them with ease.Perhaps India’s bowlers, in their attempt to intimidate the debutant, overdid it. Both Zaheer Khan and Ishant were wayward in the crucial first session when the ball swung. They fed him a diet of short deliveries or ones that were pitched on driveable lengths. The early fall of Smith did not deter Petersen either, and he hooked Ishant in the next over. When Zaheer committed the folly of bouncing his opponent, he too was dispatched to the midwicket boundary. “They were trying to get me out early and offered me a couple of boundary balls,” Petersen said.Playing with the full face of the bat, Petersen displayed elegant footwork to get close to the pitch of the ball before deciding on his shot. The presence of Amla at the other end helped him. Amla, the double centurion at Nagpur, played the role Kallis usually does, dominating the spinners, especially Harbhajan, who was hardly bowled in the second session.Amla’s assurance allowed Petersen to grow in confidence. Only in the nineties did he get nervous and offer a chance for the first time, failing to negotiate the reverse swing of Ishant convincingly. He did not succumb, though, and raised his bat after a deserved century, acknowledging the support of his team.Eden Gardens can be an intimidating venue because of its size, its raucous crowds and the historic battles fought there. AB de Villiers had said on Saturday that it is a special ground to play cricket on, a place every cricketer wants to excel. For Petersen the feeling was the same, especially on the day of his debut, but he did not allow anything to overawe him.

Leeds star Meslier linked with Barcelona

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier could potentially join La Liga giants Barcelona next summer, according to a fresh rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Meslier shines for Leeds

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the standout figures of the Marcelo Bielsa era at Elland Road, excelling between the sticks. He has now made 65 appearances for Leeds, proving to be a model of consistency and becoming the youngest goalkeeper in Premier League history to play 50 times in the division.

He has kept 23 clean sheets during his time in Yorkshire, which works out at approximately one every three matches, a very respectable return.

The Frenchman looks set to have a huge future in the game, and although his current Whites deal doesn’t expire until 2026, there appears to be some interest in him ahead of forthcoming transfer windows.

The Latest: Barca linked with Meslier

According to pundit Gerard Moreno [via Planeta Barca and Sport Witness], who specialises in Barcelona news, Meslier is wanted by the La Liga giants due to the poor form of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

A summer move is mentioned rather than a January switch, although no official approach appears to have been made. Andre Onana, Koen Casteels and Bartlomiej Dragowski were also identified by Moreno as potential replacements for the £49.5m-rated Germany goalkeeper, who boasts 14 trophies to his name during his time at Camp Nou.

The Verdict: Potentially huge loss

Much like a number of Leeds players who are highly sought-after, it is perhaps wishful thinking to expect Meslier to remain at Elland Road for many years to come.

That would be an ideal scenario, of course, but considering that he is arguably one of Europe’s best young goalkeepers – he has been hailed as ‘excellent’ by BBC pundit Micah Richards – it is easy to envisage him joining a top European club.

If Meslier does choose to move on, it is vital that Leeds receive a decent fee for his services in order to replace him with a similarly talented player and bring in other reinforcements. He is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, so prospective suitors should not expect to get away with paying anything less.

Siddons aims for more consistency

Bangladesh are expected to make two changes to their side for the second Test against England at Dhaka on Saturday, as their coach seeks a higher level of discipline with both bat and ball

Andrew Miller in Dhaka19-Mar-2010Bangladesh will make two changes to their side for the second Test against England at Dhaka on Saturday, as their coach, Jamie Siddons, seeks a higher level of discipline with both bat and ball following their 181-run defeat in Chittagong last week.Their new-ball bowler, Shadahat Hossain, has been dropped to make way for Shafiul Islam, while Aftab Ahmed’s place at No. 4 has been taken by the uncapped Jahurul Islam, who joined the squad on the eve of the first Test following Raqibul Hasan’s shock “retirement” from international cricket.”This was definitely a moment I have looked forward to since I became a cricket player. The dream of playing cricket at Test level has always been my chief motivation,” said Jahurul. “I have been in good form coming into the national team and I will take the confidence of the runs I had scored into the Test match.”Meanwhile Raqibul’s potential return to the team has been delayed after he was handed a three-month suspension by the board despite Siddons being optimistic that a decision that he described last week as “rash and foolish” would soon be forgotten.”We’ve spoken to him, but it is still up to a board decision to release him back to play,” said Siddons. “That’s not happening yet so he’s left his run a little bit late. I would have had him back no problem but there’s a few little delays happening. Hopefully we’ll have him back for the England tour and the Asia Cup.”After a torrid start to the Chittagong Test, in which Bangladesh slumped to 51 for 3 after conceding a hefty 599 for 6 declared, the team settled down to produce three decent days of Test cricket, with their batsmen amassing 627 runs across their two innings, while restricting England to 209 for 7 second time around. However, Siddons remains frustrated by such peaks and troughs, and wants an improved focus at Dhaka.”The one thing we’re aiming for is to be consistent,” said Siddons. “All of our top order – apart from our No. 4 position – are centurions in Test cricket now, and they have all made them in the last four months. But we’re still having Mahmudullah making a fifty then nothing, Tamim [Iqbal] 80 then nothing, Shakib [Al Hasan] nothing then a score. To get scores of 400 you need more consistency than that.”To make 630 over two innings against England was a reasonable effort, but we’re still probably 150 short. Our players are all confident of performing at this level and they’ll be confident of performing on that wicket. We just need them to put it together in the same match. That’s what England did to us, and it’s what we need to do back to them if we want to be successful.”We bowled, I think, nine maidens in 145 overs [138.3],” said Siddons. “It’s ridiculous, and it’s not good enough. Test cricket should be a game where you have to work a lot harder for your runs, but we couldn’t bowl one side of the wicket, and when we wanted to bowl at the wickets we couldn’t do that either. We also need to make more runs in the first innings. We batted on probably the flattest day, and only made 296, and that probably wasn’t anywhere near enough.”One aspect of Bangladesh’s performance that will change, however, will be their decision if they win the toss. At Chittagong, Shakib called correctly but chose to field first, a move that Siddons later admitted was the wrong one. This time, with another spin-friendly surface in prospect, there’s no doubt that they be aiming to put a score on the board first-up.”If the wicket plays the way we expect it to, and day one should be flat, if we win the toss we will bat,” said Siddons. “And if we do bowl I hope we put the ball in better areas and make them work a little harder for their runs. I expect it to turn a bit more towards the end of the game, because the footmarks play a bigger part on this wicket. Hopefully it will turn from day one, but we won’t be taking that risk. For me, as usual, it’s about us playing our game as well as we can,” he added. “I’ve got no expectations, I just want our players to play well. Each day is different, so our expectations change every day, according to the situation of the game. But I expect us to play pretty good cricket. It’s our home conditions, and we played reasonably well at Chittagong, but we’ll need nearer 700 [runs in the match] to win the game here.”Bangladesh 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Jahurul Islam, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Naeem Islam, 9 Abdur Razzak, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.

Vinay and Chawla in World Twenty20 squad

Karnataka fast bowler Vinay Kumar is the only new face in India’s 15-man squad to the World Twenty20 while legspinner Piyush Chawla has been handed a recall

Cricinfo staff26-Mar-2010Karnataka fast bowler Vinay Kumar is the only new face in India’s 15-man squad for the World Twenty20, while legspinner Piyush Chawla returns to the national side after nearly two years. With both Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra declared fit, the rest of the squad pick themselves, Rohit Sharma retaining his place under massive pressure from Virat Kolhi through ODI runs, and Manish Pandey through a bumper Ranji season and impressive showing in the IPL. Vinay has edged out Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth, both part of India’s last Twenty20 squad.Parallels could be drawn with India’s selection of Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, who were still recovering from injuries, for last year’s World Twenty20. Then, as the selectors said later, India had taken the risk and paid for it: Sehwag didn’t manage a single game, and Zaheer was not at his best. This time, though, Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of national selection committee, confirmed all players had sent in their fitness certificates, and that there were no fitness worries in the squad. The selectors resisted the temptation of looking outside the 30 probables they had earlier announced, after Robin Uthappa’s fireworks in the IPL, and Irfan Pathan’s return to fitness. Instead they went for the tried and tested names there: Rohit in the middle order, and Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja as allrounders. As expected, Jadeja’s controversial omission from the IPL didn’t hamper his future with the national side. While the selectors didn’t get carried away by a few good performances in the first third of the IPL, Vinay’s impressive bowling in the event so far, in addition to yet another big domestic season, was enough for the nod. Vinay, the fourth seamer in the squad, picked 46 Ranji wickets, and as a timely nudge, is currently joint-second on the IPL wicket-takers’ list, bagging eight for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The same formula didn’t work for his state-mate Pandey, though. He was the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, and has been valuable for Bangalore in the IPL so far. The selection committee, however, went for the batsman more experienced at the international level, in Rohit. The choice of back-up spinner, which has been this selection committee’s weakest suit, continues to baffle. Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra, who have been taking turns in travelling as the back-up spinner without actually getting a decent run in the team, were both overlooked in favour of Chawla. All three spinners have been in reasonable form in the IPL, with Mishra leading the way. Chawla last played for India during the 2008 Asia Cup in Pakistan.”I had a really good Ranji Trophy season after a good county stint at Sussex. So I was confident about my cricket but about this Twenty20 selection it was 50-50,” Chawla told Cricinfo. “So this call is a big surprise. I knew I would come back in the Indian team but I was not very, very confident about making it to the Twenty20 squad.”That MS Dhoni is returning from an injury must have prompted the selectors to pick a reserve wicketkeeper, although they don’t lose much by way of a batsman because Dinesh Karthik has proved to be a good batsman in the Twenty20 format. The World Twenty20 starts on April 30, five days after the end of the IPL; India are grouped with South Africa and Afghanistan.Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla, Vinay Kumar, Rohit Sharma

Leeds eye dream Bielsa signing

Leeds United transfer target Nahitan Nandez may have played his final game for Cagliari amid interest from the Premier League…

What’s the word?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Yorkshireman are one of two top-flight teams monitoring the Uruguay international ahead of the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old was withdrawn early during their 4-0 defeat to Udinese with an injury, so with the Serie A now on a winter break, he may well not feature for Gli Isolani again.

After being denied an exit in the summer, Nandez could be available for less than his reported €36m (£30m) release clause.

Bielsa’s dream January signing

Nandez would be something of a dream signing for Bielsa, and not just because of their mounting injury crisis.

The 49-cap dynamo has regularly been linked with a move to Elland Road since the Argentine took the dugout, which should come as no surprise given his work rate and ability to cover so much ground, at both ends of the pitch.

He would seemingly be a perfect fit for his high-intensity pressing system at Leeds.

Lauded as a “machine” by Italian football expert Conor Clancy, Nandez has averaged 2.4 aerial duels won – despite being 5 foot 7 – as well as two tackles, 1.5 dribbles and 1.1 key passes per game in the Serie A this term, via WhoScored.

“I think he’s only about five foot seven, but you wouldn’t know it if you just watched clips of him, he is a little bit of a machine. He’s so powerful but at the same time, has really, really good ball control,” he told This is Futbol.

As evident, the £18m-rated box-to-box enforcer has plenty of attributes that should catch the 66-year-old’s eye.

Leeds have struggled greatly so far this season and a number of his usually trusted stalwarts have let him down, none more so than Mateusz Klich, who ranks amongst his three worst performers. He has not completed the entire duration of a Premier League match since September, even though he’s made 13 appearances.

Three of his last four matches has seen him surpass a 6.0 rating just once, whilst he’s averaging fewer tackles and dribbles per game than Nandez.

United director of football Victor Orta could well seal Biela a solid upgrade to his engine room with a move for the Cagliari star this January.

Tottenham gifted chance to sign Coutinho

According to reports by The Sunday Mirror (via HITC), Barcelona have offered Philippe Coutinho to both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – but the Brazilian is not interested in a move to St James’ Park.

The Lowdown: Barcelona trying to offload Coutinho

Since leaving Liverpool for the Spanish giants in 2018 in a deal worth a staggering £142m, the attacking midfielder has not hit the heights he reached whilst playing under Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 29-year-old has made 12 appearances this season in LaLiga, scoring twice and failing to supply an assist. However, each of those games has involved a substitution, as the Brazilian is yet to play a full 90-minute league match this season.

The Latest: Spurs gifted chance to sign Coutinho

According to reports by The Sunday Mirror (via HITC), Barcelona are keen to offload Coutinho on a permanent deal, and they have offered the player to both Newcastle and Tottenham in a bid to push him away from the club. However, it is believed that the midfielder is reluctant to make the move to Tyneside.

Barcelona are desperately trying to sell some players to fund a move for Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres. Coutinho’s massive wages are proving to be a barrier in this pursuit, though, as AS have reported that the Brazilian earns around €20m (£17.07m) per season, which equates to roughly £325,000 per week.

The Verdict: Wages likely too high

With Coutinho reluctant to join Newcastle, Barcelona will continue to push Spurs into a move for the player.

The 29-year-old could prove to be a fantastic addition to Antonio Conte’s side due to his vast experience in the Premier League, where he played 152 games for Liverpool and once made the PFA Team of the Season. Former Reds teammate and international colleague Roberto Firmino has previously described the Brazilian as ‘phenomenal’, claiming that he has ‘magical powers’.

Despite such praise, it seems unlikely that Spurs will pursue a move for the player, as his enormous wages could prove to be too much for the north London club, whose top earner is Harry Kane on £200,000 per week.

Concerns over revelation of Kochi ownership details

The IPL has been caught in a controversy over details of the ownership structure of the Kochi franchise being made public by Lalit Modi, the league chairman

Cricinfo staff12-Apr-2010The IPL has been caught in a controversy over details of the ownership structure of the Kochi franchise being made public by Lalit Modi, the league chairman. The franchise owners, who bought the team last month, are believed to feel this is a breach of faith and have reportedly taken up the issue with the Indian board which, Cricinfo has learnt, is also unhappy with the situation.Modi has denied any breach of confidentiality. “All team owners of the IPL have been revealed in the past,” he told . “I don’t think there is anything to hide in it. We’re a public body.” Asked whether the BCCI had been in touch with him on this, he said, “That’s an internal matter – I don’t want to reveal what we discussed at the board level.”The ownership details were posted by Modi on his Twitter feed on Sunday afternoon, in response to questions from the public. According to his posts, the Kochi consortium break-up is: Rendezvous Sports 1%, Anchor 27%, Parinee [Developers] 26%, Film Waves Combine 12%, Anand Shyam 8%, Vivek Venugopal 1% with Rendezvous having an additional 25% free equity. That equity is held by Kisan, Shailender and Pushpa Gaikwad, Sunanda Pushkar, Puja Gulathi, Jayant Kotalwar, Vishnu Prasad, Sundip Agarwal. In his Tweets Modi has also posed questions about the Kochi stake-holders. “Who are the shareholders of Rendezvous. And why have they been given this 100’s of million dollars bonanza?”, read one tweet. Another read: “25% of Kochi team is given free to Rendezvous sports for life. The same equity is non-dilutable in perpetuity. What does that mean?”Modi’s revelations have clearly hurt the owners of Kochi. “It was not expected from a body like the IPL,” a senior member of the consortium told Cricinfo. “The documents are very clear that information submitted is confidential and cannot be revealed by either side.”The franchise now wants the IPL to reveal the ownership details of the nine other franchises. “What we are trying to say is the documents we have submitted to him are supposed to be kept confidential. But if he is letting out the information on our consortium then we would like to be informed of the details of all the owners of the IPL teams, including the individual shareholders, as he has done for us,” the source said. This is not the first time Rendezvous Sports World Private Limited, which bagged the ownership of the Kochi franchise last month for a bid of US$ 333.33 million, have run into trouble with the IPL. Last week they were asked to list the names of all the owners after the IPL found out that there were a few “secret partners” in the consortium. Consequently a reviewed agreement was signed by both the parties in Bangalore on Saturday night – and it was in this context that questions were put to Modi by the public on Twitter seeking the details. The Kochi consortium has worked hard over the past month to dispel the notion that they are a disparate team of individuals; they had worked on the plan for the last six months before deciding to make the move. The seriousness of their intentions can be gauged from the fact that no one backed out of the deal despite the original tender process being cancelled and rescheduled from March 7 to 21. The face of the bid the first time around was the Jaypee Group, but two weeks later Jaypee decided to opt out, forcing the other partners to re-organise things.
