Alasdair Gold details Spurs club advisory panel

After Tottenham Hotspur announced the establishment of a Club Advisory Panel and subsequent fan representation on the board (official), Alasdair Gold has relayed this news whilst lifting the lid on a crucial detail.

The Lowdown: Super League shame…

Tottenham faced unrelenting criticism for their involvement in the European Super League saga, with the Lilywhites opting to join the breakaway division as a founding member alongside Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.

After the backlash from supporters, Spurs quickly announced their withdrawal from the project and have been attempting to rebuild bridges ever since.

ENIC out protests have occurred outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the relationship between supporters and Spurs seems in a very delicate state.

The Latest: Gold relays Spurs board news after big announcement

In a move to garner trust with supporters, Tottenham officially announced and confirmed there will be fan representation on the board coupled with the establishment of a Club Advisory Panel.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest/” title=”Tottenham latest…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The head of this panel will be elected to the Tottenham Hotspur board as a non-executive and have full voting rights on all subjects brought forward affecting the club.

Gold, going into more detail, shares that these voting rights include all football-related matters on and off the pitch.

“The chair of the new Club Advisory Panel of fans, who will be elected to the Tottenham Hotspur board as a non-executive, will have full voting rights on matters decided by the board,” he explained on Twitter.

“For those asking, I’m told that also means the right to vote on all football matters put to the board.”

The Verdict: Good move, but still a way to go…

This move by the club will go some way to building bridges with supporters who have arguably lost a degree of trust after the ESL saga.

Tottenham fans being able to have a voice at the very top of Spurs could be huge in terms of major future decisions, especially Gold’s detail that the chair of this advisory panel will have full voting rights on every club topic, even matters on the pitch.

A step in the right direction to move on from what was a bleak week in the history of Tottenham, and Lilywhites can only hope this will go on to mark historic change.

Andrew Hignell09-May-2001Glamorgan coach Jeff Hammond has been reflecting on the club`s early seasonform, which has seen the side, especially their batsmen, prosper in Championship cricket, end the first two rounds of the competition in third place of Divsion One, yet also lose all five of the zonal games in the Benson and Hedges Cup.”I keep going back to last year, ” said Hammond, “and I thought we would translate our good performances from 2000 into this season’s Benson & Hedges Cup. But it hasn`t been the case, and losing the five zonal games has been a dampener to our ideals and objectives, especially as we thought we could do well in all four competitions this season. I’d be lying if I said that this hasn’t affected the team’s confidence””At least we have started well in the Championship and we can build on that in the next Championship match at Old Trafford against Lancashire”Lancashire themselves had a modest campaign in the Benson and Hedges Cup and also failed to gain a place in the quarter-final stages of the competition. By next week`s game, Steve Watkin (groin) and Darren Thomas (side) should have recovered from their recent injuries, and with Owen Parkin continuing torecover from his foot injury, and Steve James fully fit after his knee operation, Glamorgan should soon be able to forget their early season injury worries.Whilst it is true that Glamorgan have only once before lost all of their zonal games in the B&H competition, the start to the 2001 season is a long, long way from being the club`s worst start to the season. That was back in 1922 when the county lost all twelve of their opening Championship games, including the first four all by the margin of an innings. The season began with defeats by an innings and 197 runs to Lancashire, by an innings and 258 runs to Yorkshire, by an innings and 205 runs toNottinghamshire, and then by an innings and 48 runs to Sussex. In fact, it was not until July 7th that Glamorgan recorded their first draw of the summer, and then on August 1st they defeated Somerset at Weston-super-Mare by 117 runs.As far as one-day cricket is concerned, Glamorgan are however quite close to one, rather unwanted record, as they have now lost 9 consecutive games in the limited overs competitions – the three at the end of the 2000 in the National League, as well as the opening game of the 2001 campaign and the five B&H games. This equals their record in one day games, having twice before lost nine games in a row – in 1972/73 and 1980. Their longest ever run without a win was in 1972/73 when they went from July 19th, 1972 until May 8th, 1973 before recording another victory in limited overs games.

BCCI not keen to host ICC KnockOut tourney

With the ticklish question of playing cricket against Pakistan yet to be sorted out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday said it was “not necessarily keen” to host the ICC KnockOut Tournament next year

16-May-2001With the ticklish question of playing cricket against Pakistan yet to be sorted out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday said it was “not necessarily keen” to host the ICC KnockOut Tournament next year.”We have asked the ICC (International Cricket Council) to come out with the details,” Board Secretary Jaywant Lele told reporters in New Delhi today. After a visit to the North Zone Cricket Academy here, Lele said “we don’t know the terms and conditions, particularly revenue sharing, offered to Bangladesh and Kenya for hosting the previous editions. This whole matter will be discussed at ICC’s annual meeting in London in June. Till then we are not necessarily keen to host the tournament”.While Lele did not mention the issue of Pakistan’s participation, Sports Minister Uma Bharti is on record saying that the ban on playing cricket was on bilateral series between India and its neighbour and there was no hitch about participating in multi-lateral tournaments.Bharti had also assured full support, including tax exemption for thetournament when ICC President Malcolm Speed met her in New Delhi last month.India had hosted the 1987 World Cup jointly with Pakistan and Sri Lanka joined these two countries for co-hosting the 1996 edition.Weatherwise too, Lele said September, when the tournament is proposed to be held, would not be a suitable time of the year as it would be raining all over the country except, maybe, in Chennai and Bangalore. The BCCI secretary confirmed that India would be going to Australia inSeptember this year to participate in a three-match one-day series against that country. The first two matches, to be played on September 14 and 16, would be indoors in Melbourne while the final game on September 18, would be outdoors in Brisbane. “The arrangement for the series is on a reciprocal basis and in return, Australia will play three one-dayers in India next year,” Lele said. After inspecting the facilities offered to the trainees at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, Lele said he was happy and satisfied with the way the National Cricket Academy and its zonal branches were functioning. “I have visited all except the East Zone Academy which is being visited by Board consultant Geoff Marsh of Australia in a day or two,” he said.Asked about reports from Australia that its players Adam Gilchrist andColin Miller and coach John Buchanan had received anonymous phone calls during the third and final Test against India at Chennai in March, Lele retorted “Ask them. Who knows who rang them up? Was it an Indian or an Australian? BCCI does not come into the picture”.The Indian Board has since treated the matter as closed.

Spurs transfers: Levy given Bissouma boost

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a breakthrough over one of their mooted summer transfer targets…

What’s the word?

Earlier this month, the North London giants were linked with interest in Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma following another impressive season on the south coast.

The Times’ Duncan Castles now claims that the 24-year-old star has asked to leave the Amex Stadium at the end of the season, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all inquiring about his availability.

It’s thought that the Seagulls are open to a sale as his contract is set to expire in two years time but only if their £30m evaluation is met.

Bissouma cost them only €18m (£16.5m) in the summer of 2018 but he has emerged as one of the most dynamic box-to-box midfielders in the English top-flight.

Levy’s licking his lips

If Spurs are truly interested in the Mali international, as was reported earlier in the month, then this latest development will surely have Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy brimming with excitement.

There are some similarities to be had with this situation and that of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at Southampton, prior to his move to Spurs.

The former Saints captain was slapped with a £35m price tag amid interest from several Premier League sides around this time last year. It was thought at the time that the 25-year-old wanted to leave to play at a higher level.

Levy, being the tough negotiating hard bargain man he is, managed to wriggle down that price to just £15m.

It’s even more impressive that they managed to ship outcast defender Kyle Walker-Peters in the other direction for £12m, meaning the total cash outlay on their new first-choice midfielder was only £3m.

An absolute steal.

Now that Bissouma is available, Levy will surely be licking his lips over the prospects of trying to clinch him on another cut-price deal.

And so he should, as he’s one of the best midfielders outside the top six right now.

Ex-Brighton boss Chris Hughton once hailed the 6-foot monster a “wonderful talent” whilst BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker took to Twitter to wax lyrical about his ability, calling him an “exceptional footballer,” via The Athletic.

Bissouma has been compared to Yaya Toure due to his natural playing style and whilst he has some way to go to match the Ivorian’s impressive numbers in England, you can see some similarities.

As per WhoScored, the Seagulls sensation is averaging 2.8 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 1.5 dribbles per game.

This is very much akin to Mousa Dembele. A brute force that could read the game perfectly, and one that liked to travel with the ball up the pitch. Bissouma even chips in with 1.2 shots per game, so perhaps he’s unlucky to not have added more than one goal to his tally this term.

Whether he’s the next Toure or the next Dembele, he’ll only have to be half the player of either to be a hit in N17. Now that he’s willing to force an exit, Levy should be ready to win this transfer tussle with his negotiating skills.

AND in other news, Spurs must put £26m-rated “calamity” out of his misery, he’s holding them back…

England team distance themselves from controversy

Channel4 have sparked controversy by suggesting that Pakistan may have tampered with the ball during the dramatic English batting collapse on the last day at Old Trafford

George Dobell04-Jun-2001Channel4 have sparked controversy by suggesting that Pakistan may have tampered with the ball during the dramatic English batting collapse on the last day at Old Trafford.”If the match referee had been watching on television, one wonders what he would have made of those pictures,” presenter Mark Nicholas commented, after showing inconclusive pictures of Pakistan captain Waqar Younis with the ball. The Pakistan camp have strenuously denied the allegations and have pointed out that neither the umpires or match-referee have spoken to them on the matter. “No one spoke to me about the ball,” Waqar Younis said.”If there was any ball tampering I would have known about it,” Yawar Saeed, the tour manager said. “There was absolutely nothing wrong. We won the match fair and square and people should be happy with that.”Most people in the game will be saddened to hear that such allegations have been levelled again. The last series between these sides in England was marred by accusations of ball tampering, but the relationship between the England and Pakistan teams has improved greatly in recent months. Attention should really be on the wonderful game the two sides have just contested, and some great last day bowling. No doubt such comments will be derided as further evidence of “whinging poms” from the Australian tourists. They may have a point. But not about the England team, who have had no complaints after falling victim to the mercurial talents of this Pakistan team.England captain Alec Stewart has been keen to play down the controversy over no-balls too. Several wickets went down to deliveries that television replays suggest should have been called as the bowler over stepped, but Stewart insisted that it made no difference to the result.”The fact is Pakistan beat us,” he admitted. “With people like Wasim, Waqar and Saqlain they are capable of knocking over sides in a session. Credit to Pakistan.””I’m not going to start moaning, saying umpires’ decisions cost us the game,” he continued. “They are there to do a job to the best of their ability. Like batsmen, bowlers, fielders, everyone makes mistakes. As players we take it on the chin and carry on.”Twenty years ago when the BBC had only two cameras, things like that weren’t picked up. Now there’s 10, 12, 15 cameras anything and everything can be seen.”

LFC fans fume at Alexander-Arnold update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been left bemused by a “horrendous” update regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hopes of playing for England at Euro 2020.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Anfield, going from academy hopeful to one of the world’s best full-backs in the space of several years. While Alexander-Arnold’s form hasn’t been consistently great this season, he has been magnificent since being left out of England’s squad back in March.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The right-back has been one of Liverpool’s best players in that time and it was his pinpoint corner which allowed Alisson to memorably head the winning goal away to West Brom on Sunday. Alexander-Arnold’s all-round display was impressive, defending doggedly and producing consistent quality in the attacking third of the pitch, delivering five key passes and winning one tackle.

Despite this, The Athletic’s David Ornstein claimed that the youngster still looks likely to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros. He wrote:

It is evident that Southgate wants his full-backs to show strong defensive qualities alongside their attacking instincts and there appear to be reservations over Alexander-Arnold’s ability to strike that balance as well as he believes the other candidates for the position are able to.

Although the door is not closed on the 22-year-old Liverpool academy graduate and the Football Association very much envisages him being part of its’ set-up in the future, it is understood to be improbable that he forces his way into this summer’s plans barring injuries or a change of heart.

West Indies embarrassed by Zimbabwe Country Districts

West Indies suffered a major humiliation when they conceded a double-century opening partnership on their way to a seven-wicket defeat by a Zimbabwe Country Districts team containing many former but no current international players apart from Dirk

John Ward20-Jun-2001West Indies suffered a major humiliation when they conceded a double-century opening partnership on their way to a seven-wicket defeat by a Zimbabwe Country Districts team containing many former but no current international players apart from Dirk Viljoen. They are having difficulty acclimatizing in Zimbabwe, as was soon evident when they batted after winning the toss in their match at Harare South Country Club. They were also probably unprepared for such a fine spell of opening bowling as that produced by former national players Eddo Brandes (aged 38) and Gus Mackay (33).Runs were at a premium and poor shot selection accounted for their first four batsmen for just 29 runs, including Lara, caught at mid-on for 11 off Mackay, who dismissed three of them. As the bowling was changed, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper steadied the innings with a partnership of 78.After Hooper fell for 34, wickets again tumbled at the other end while Chanderpaul played a steady innings full of good sense. His next real support came from Cameron Cuffy (23 not out) at number ten, who hit Dirk Viljoen for two massive sixes over long-on. Chanderpaul was finally bowled by Viljoen in the final over for 84, and the innings closed on 207 for nine. The most successful bowlers were Mackay (three for 22) and off-spinner Barney Rogers (three for 36). The score was restricted by some fine Districts fielding and gave hope of a good finish. For Districts, it was better than that. Andy Waller, aged 41, rolled back the years with a magnificent century, while Gavin Rennie played the ideal supporting role. They were rarely troubled by a West Indian attack that was uninspired rather than untidy. Waller, especially, took the eye with fine strokes all round the wicket, including his renowned powerful leg-side hits and later in his innings fine driving through the covers.Waller fell just before the end, adjudged lbw to Cameron Cuffy for 124, with 14 fours and a six, of an opening stand of 202. Rennie followed two runs later, caught at midwicket off Marlon Samuels for 72, and West Indies were temporarily reinvigorated. Craig Evans was lbw to Cuffy for 1 before the Districts celebrated a memorable victory with two overs to spare.

West Ham: Rice an unsung vs Saints

West Ham United sealed a place in the Europa League as they cruised to victory over Southampton in the final Premier League game of the 2020/21 season on Sunday evening.

And David Moyes largely has Pablo Fornals to thank after a quickfire first-half brace set the tone for their performance, on a day where a point would’ve been suffice.

The Spaniard fired into an empty net to open the scoring on the half-hour mark, and then doubled his and the Hammers’ tally three minutes later when latching onto Vladimir Coufal’s cross.

In the second half, the three points were sealed by a surprise name in Declan Rice, who was arguably an unsung hero after running the midfield engine room.

Captaining the side in Mark Noble’s absence, the England international was an absolute beast under Moyes, recording a 7.3 rating on SofaScore. Only the goalscoring midfielder, Aaron Cresswell and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski managed better.

The 22-year-old is going to be a wanted man once again this summer, with local rivals Chelsea already mooted with reigniting their interest.

The Telegraph’s Matt Law believes the Blues could use Tammy Abraham as a makeweight in a bid to tempt the Irons into a sale.

Good luck with that after his latest outing.

Rice was frequently involved in the game, managing 47 touches and was a major influence in linking the defence to the attack, registering two successful dribbles (100%), making 74% of his passes, and firing two shots at goal, via SofaScore.

Furthermore, the 6 foot 1 monster – who is now valued at £54m – was a rock defensively, putting in two tackles, which was above his average for the season whilst he also won a whopping 87.5% of his battles, proving to be a hard man to bypass.

His presence certainly helped stop the influence from the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Stuart Armstrong, two of the Saints’ top playmakers.

Rice, a £60k-per-week earner at the London Stadium, also earned the praise of The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, who claimed he enjoyed a “brilliant performance” and also stated that he came off to a standing ovation – quite deservedly so.

Whilst Fornals will take the plaudits for firing the Hammers into Europe, it was the display from Rice that may well go unnoticed despite playing a starring and underrated role on the day.

Somerset Board XI record first win of season

The Somerset Cricket Board XI tasted victory for the first time this season when they beat Gloucestershire Board XI at North Perrott on Sunday

Richard Walsh19-Jun-2001The Somerset Cricket Board XI tasted victory for the first time this season when they beat Gloucestershire Board XI at North Perrott on Sunday.Batting first Somerset were dismissed for 212 in 49 overs with Wes Durston making a half-century, Kevin Sedgebeer 28 and Matt Gitsham 18. There were also a very useful 10 runs from 17-year-old Nick Gerrish from Wells, who was making his debut for the side.In reply Gloucestershire were bowled out for 208, with Chris Hunkin taking three wickets and Matt Dimond and Andrew two wickets each.Team manager Peter Robinson was delighted with the result and said afterwards: “Both sides made mistakes but we were victorious. We got wickets at the right time, and Chris Hunkin bowled a very tight last over.”The Somerset Board side play their remaining match in the competition on Sunday when they travel to Swindon to take on Wiltshire.

Crystal Palace approach Sean Dyche

Crystal Palace have been informed that it will cost them £3m in compensation fees to prise Sean Dyche away from Burnley this summer.

What’s the story?

According to Football Insider, the south London club’s hierarchy view the 49-year-old as a suitable candidate to replace the departing Roy Hodgson and have approached his current employers over acquiring his services.

Dyche has one year left to run on his contract at Turf Moor and has previously claimed that talks over an extension are set to take place with the Clarets’ hierarchy.

Fans will be buzzing

Hodgson is set to leave the Eagles in the coming weeks after four years at the helm, with an 11th place finish in 2017/18 their best result under the former England manager.

However, the 73-year-old is leaving a far from stable first team squad behind. Fourteen players are set to become free agents over the summer, meaning that Hodgson’s successor will have to oversee a drastic overhaul.

The likes of Christian Benteke, Patrick van Aanholt and Gary Cahill are among the players nearing the Selhurst Park exit door, but Dyche has a history of squad rebuilds throughout his nine-year spell at Burnley.

Although he may not be the most glamorous name linked with the Palace vacancy, the Burnley chief is arguably the most sensible and pragmatic solution to the Eagles’ extensive problems.

While the likes of Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard may bring a more exciting and attractive brand of football to south London, Dyche would almost certainly offer a better chance of top-flight survival, and ultimately that will be the club’s main goal for 2021/22.

A new era of hope and expectation has begun at Palace, but they must walk before they can run, and pragmatism must prevail over potentially dangerous ambition.

With so much upheaval expected ahead of the new campaign, now is not the time to bring in a completely contrasting philosophy to the last.

A familiar set of principles via a manager with a proven track record of extracting the maximum from a limited set of resources is surely the obvious option for chairman Steve Parish, and this latest revelation of Palace’s approach for an experienced Premier League manager in Dyche (228 top-flight games) will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.
