Unfamiliar role ahead for Kumble

The statement by Indian coach John Wright that Anil Kumble has to fight his way back into the Indian team made for interesting reading. Till a few months ago, the idea of India’s main strike bowler of the last decade having to `fight’ to come back to the team would have been unthinkable. Ever since his return to the Indian side for the tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa in 1992, Kumble has been a permanent fixture in the playing eleven. In fact, he played 60 Tests on the trot from Harare in October 1992 to the Test against South Africa at Bangalorein March 2000. No other Indian spin bowler has played in as many successive Tests.The 30-year-old ace leg spin-googly bowler from Karnataka has bestrode the Indian spin scene like a colossus taking 276 wickets in 61 Tests. The next best haul by an Indian spinner during the same period was less than 100 wickets. It did not matter if Kumble was generally a match winner only on home wickets. Indeed, the difference in his performances at home and away is quite marked. In 31 Tests at home, Kumble has 175 wickets at an average of 21.38 In 30 Tests abroad, he has only 101 wickets at an average of 39.46. Despite this, he still remained India’s first choice spin bowler and on quite a few occasions he has been the only spin bowler in the playing eleven. even on foreign soil.In Kumble’s absence, the Indian spin attack generally struggled to take wickets in the three Tests against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at the start of the 2000-2001 season. With Kumble continuing to be on the sidelines thanks to the shoulder injury he sustained in Sharjah in October last year, tough times were predicted for the Indian spin attack, particularly in the series against the all conquering Australians. Who was there to take the wickets, it was argued even as we prayed and hoped for Kumble to recover quickly. The panic strickenselectors threw the net far and wide in an effort to find adequate replacements. Leg spinners, off spinners, left arm spinners, part timespinners et al were summoned to the camp prior to the selection of the team to take on the Australians but the cupboard seemed to be bare.We had all reconciled ourselves to the fact that the Indian spin attack was going to be harshly treated till Kumble returned when suddenly Harbhajan Singh burst upon the scene. Even as there were no other spinners worth their name, the young offie became the toast of the nation and the scourge of the Australians by taking 32 wickets in three Tests. By doing so, not only did he play a leading role in India’s astonishing comeback win in the series but he also did something that no one thought possible – push Kumble out of his placeas India’s reigning spin king. At the moment then, Kumble can no longer assume that his place in the side is assured. Once he recovers from his shoulder ailment he has to, in John Wright’s words, "fight" his way back into the side.This is certainly an unaccustomed and rather unwelcome role for Kumble. `Prima donnas’ do not generally like to be shoved out of their exalted status but then if this is a new situation for Kumble, it is not something new for leading bowlers. Kumble’s great contemporary Shane Warne himself has had to face competition from Colin Miller and Stuart MacGill, especially after his return to the game following treatment to an injured shoulder but took up the challenge boldly. Kumble is also made of sterner stuff. He can be counted upon to counter Harbhajan’s challenge as the country’s leading spin bowler ina healthy, competitive manner. But the snag is that there are no domestic or international matches for him to prove his fitness or that he has lost none of his skill. He says he hopes to be match fit and available for selection for the South African tour from October. "If I recover before the Sri Lankan tour in July-September, that will be a bonus," Kumble is quoted to have said.It is likely that neither Kumble and the selectors would be inclined to rush his return to international cricket. Infact Sourav Ganguly has already indicated this. So Kumble being ready and available before the tour of South Africa is unlikely. Unless Harbhajan performs very poorly on the tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, Kumble can only come back as the side’s second spinner. And there have been occasions, especially on foreign soil, that India have played only one spin bowler. So it is a challenging – if unfamiliar – scenario that lies ahead for Kumble. How well he rises to the occasion could well determine his future.

Big picture: A fresh chapter for Sri Lanka

The Afghanistan men’s team has played seven Tests in their history; for Sri Lanka, this is the first of eight (perhaps nine) scheduled for 2024. This is, on the surface, a mismatch.Rashid Khan is not with Afghanistan to provide his menacing legbreaks and general inspiration – he is still recovering from back surgery, and has not played competitive cricket since November. Their most experienced spinner in a nation where spin frequently decides matches is left-arm wristspinner Zahir Khan, who has an average of 44.90 from his four Tests. And having arrived in Sri Lanka only on Tuesday night, they have given themselves less than three days to acclimatise. This, increasingly, is the amount of respect Tests are given in some parts of the world.Where Afghanistan will feel they can meet Sri Lanka on more equal terms, however, is with the bat. In the shorter formats, Ibrahim Zadran has had success against Sri Lanka, as has Rahmat Shah, while captain Hashmatullah Shahidi averages 53.57 in Test cricket. In the ODIs Afghanistan have played in Sri Lanka, it is their batting that has most impressed. They will take no little confidence in their recent dominance over Sri Lanka’s bowling in that format.Sri Lanka are at the beginning of a fresh chapter – Dhananjaya de Silva is getting his first Test at the helm. So far, he has not promised anything radical. A greater emphasis on fielding, perhaps, but no wholesale overhauling of strategy or personnel. He has been a dynamic presence in the Sri Lanka Test side, having lately grown into a decent lower-middle-order batter, who contributes substantially with ball and in the field as well. How he marshals an attack without any out-and-out matchwinners and how frequently he bowls himself will make for fascinating viewing.

In the spotlight: Dimuth Karunaratne and Ibrahim Zadran

Dimuth Karunaratne had asked to step down from the captaincy after the last World Test Championship cycle. The selectors had asked him to hang on for one more year, but have now finally let him go. Karunaratne is the only Sri Lanka player to have made the ICC’s Test teams of the year since 2017 – he has been there three times, including in 2023 – and, since the start of 2021, has averaged 56.18, outstanding for an opener. If there are good batting days at SSC, which is his home ground in domestic cricket, expect him to cash in.Ibrahim Zadran‘s ODI scores against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka are: 22, 54, 98, 162, 10, 106. It is around him that the top order has tended to rally on the island, and from him they have taken cues on how to play spin. He has not been quite so consistent in Tests, with three fifties in the ten innings he has played so far. But with the SSC surface expected to be decent for batting over the first three days (and particularly after the first morning), Ibrahim is best placed from his side to make a substantial score.

Pitch and conditions

There was a tinge of green at the SSC on the eve of the game, which suggests there will be some seam movement on the first morning. Expect it to flatten out and get better for spin later, however. At first glance, this did not seem the spinner’s paradise the SSC has often been for Tests over the past six years. The weather has been relatively dry in Colombo over February. Only brief showers are forecast.

Lasith Malinga retires from T20s to close out playing career

Lasith Malinga, who has a claim to being men’s cricket’s greatest T20 bowler, has officially called time on the last format he had not retired in. It was always likely Malinga’s playing career was over after he stopped being picked for the Sri Lanka side, while he also withdrew from several franchise tournaments, including the IPL. But if fans had held out hope for a farewell T20, that is no longer an option.Malinga announced his decision via his new Youtube channel, in which he had been analysing Sri Lanka’s limited-overs performances over the past few weeks. “Today I decided I want to give 100% rest to my T20 bowling shoes,” he said. “I want to thank each and every one who supported me and blessed me throughout my T20 journey.” Malinga went on to thank the officials and teammates of all the major teams he has been a part of, from the Sri Lanka national side, to Mumbai Indians, Melbourne Stars, and various other sides from around the world.

Recognised almost as much for his blonde-tipped curls, as his unique round-arm action, Malinga claimed 107 T20 international wickets, and maintained an economy rate of 7.42 across 83 bowling innings. He was among the format’s primary innovators in its early years. Although his fast, swinging yorker was his primary weapon right through his T20 career, he also developed a well-disguised slower-ball, a slower bouncer, and was among the first and most successful bowlers to use wide yorkers at the death – a fairly commonplace strategy today.He was an integral part of the Sri Lanka men’s team’s T20 success at the turn of the last decade. Malinga was leader of Sri Lanka’s attack in the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups, when Sri Lanka made the final, and was captain of the team when they won the World Cup in 2014.In addition to his international exploits, he was also a highly-sought after bowler in franchise tournaments in his heyday. In the IPL, his tally of 170 wickets is yet to be eclipsed, and his strike rate of 16.62 is the lowest for any bowler with more than 90 wickets in the tournament. Bharat Arun, Wriddhiman Saha, Abhimanyu Easwaran rejoin India squad after isolation

Bowling coach Bharat Arun, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, and reserve batter Abhimanyu Easwaran rejoined the Indian squad in Durham on Saturday – and even took part in a training session – after completing a ten-day quarantine in accordance with the UK’s Covid-19 protocols.The trio had to isolate in London while the rest of the squad and support staff travelled to Durham, after being identified asclose contacts of training assistant/net bowler Dayanand Garani, who tested positive for Covid-19 on July 14. Garani has not yet rejoined the team. Rishabh Pant, who had also tested positive for Covid-19, has also linked up with the squad, on July 22, after recovering. All three players – Pant, Saha and Easwaran – are now available for selection, having missed India’s three-day warm-up match against a County Select XI.With Pant and Saha both absent for the three-day game, KL Rahul kept wickets for the Indians, as the matchended in a draw.Rahul made 101 (retired) in the first innings, top-scoring for the Indians. Chance for West Indies to keep weakened Australia under pressure

As for a number of sides, one-day series have been few and far between for these two teams since Covid-19 struck. For both it will be just their third series under the World Cup Super League and in Australia’s case it’s more than six months since they last played 50-over cricket.In a way, the two teams emphasise how each ODI is now more important. Australia have won both their series against tough opponents in India and England but are only 10 points better off than West Indies due to dropping a game in each series. West Indies were whitewashed by Bangladesh but made up ground with a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka.Since 2000, the sides have played each other 48 times in ODIs with Australia 37-8 ahead although in this series the home advantage for West Indies could be significant. It means they can pick their specialist one-day squad whereas Australia’s line-up will be a mix-and-match job given the absentees and T20 focus of the tour.With Aaron Finch ruled out of at least the first match with a knee injury, stand-in captain Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh will be the only members of the top order who have been a regular part of Australia’s ODI line-up. In Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa they still have the core of their bowling attack together although there are spaces to fill there as well.West Indies played some very solid cricket against Sri Lanka earlier this year when they won all three games chasing but coach Phil Simmons has laid down the challenge for them of going big if they get the chance to bat first. The recent T20 series was West Indies’ first bilateral success against Australia in any format since 1995 when they won a one-day series. They have a good chance of matching that this time.

He was in fine form during the series against Sri Lanka in March when he made 110, 84 and 64. In his one previous innings against Australia, he made 68 at the 2019 World Cup.Mitchell Marsh was the one significant success in the T20 series as he scored 219 runs and claimed eight wickets with some of the most consistent cricket he has produced for Australia. He returned to the ODI side in early 2020 for the first time in two years but then missed the home series against India due to injury. His ODI numbers are pretty solid: a batting average of 34.36 and bowling return of 36.79. Kieron Pollard did not confirm whether he would be available. If he continues to be sidelined it could open up room for another batter. Hope is the vice-captain in this format. Otherwise if he is fit it could be a choice between Jason Mohammed and Shimron Hetymer in the middle order. Jason Holder is also set to return after being rested. Shreyas Iyer out with chickenpox

Delhi Daredevils batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for at least a week with a bout of chickenpox. Iyer, who is recuperating at home in Mumbai, will miss Daredevils’ season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 8, and is also likely to sit out their second match, against Rising Pune Supergiant on April 11.Iyer’s illness adds to a growing list of unavailable Daredevils players. Taylor suffers low grade calf tear but available to bat

Ross Taylor has suffered a low grade tear of the right calf but will bat if required in the Dunedin Test against South Africa. There is no word on whether he will be able to take any further part in the series.Taylor underwent a scan on Friday morning and had a short net session, after limping off the field in the 43rd over in the second day when he was 8. He received treatment overnight, which included icing on the area, and remains restricted in his movements.He can resume his first innings at any time, but will only be able to bat at five down – or when the time he has spent off the field as elapsed – in the second.After the second day’s play, Taylor’s team-mate Trent Boult admitted the team were concerned about his injury, his second in the same area in less than three years. Taylor missed a three-match ODI series against South Africa in 2014 for the same reason. “It’s a shame for us. He is a big player,” Boult said. “He is obviously disappointed. The way he walked off, it doesn’t look too good. We will see tomorrow.”Taylor is New Zealand’s second-highest Test century-maker on 16, one behind his mentor Martin Crowe. Earlier this season he became their leading century-marker in ODIs, but has lost his place in the T20 side.If this Test goes the duration there are only three days before the second Test starts in Wellington on March 16, which gives New Zealand six days to name a replacement if necessary. One man they cannot turn to is Martin Guptill, who will need six weeks of rehabilitation on his hamstrings ahead of the Champions Trophy. Colin Munro, Neil Broom and Dean Brownlie are believed to be in contention for a call-up if needed.

Jamaica captain, left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, took 9 for 41 in the second innings as his team beat Trinidad & Tobago by 132 runs at Sabina Park in Kingston. Miller had taken nine consecutive wickets, the last of which came in the 55th over, but narrowly missed out on a possible ten-wicket haul when Roshon Primus was trapped in front by Damion Jacobs off the last ball of the 56th.Miller’s effort came after T&T legspinner Imran Khan had run through Jamaica’s lower order earlier in the day. Tamim Iqbal can play in Chittagong Vikings’ first match of this season’s Bangladesh Premier League. The tournament’s member-secretary Ismail Haider Mallick has said the one-match domestic suspension Tamim picked up during the Dhaka Premier League only applied to 50-over matches.”Tamim will be suspended for the next 50-overs domestic match since he was handed the punishment during the Dhaka Premier League,” Mallick said. “This [BPL] is a franchise league. If he was to be suspended, we would have mentioned it during the players’ draft.
